How West Was Won

Hurri Cosmo

The blurb:

Jake is on a much-needed vacation when he receives a desperate call from Alan, his former boyfriend. Against his better judgment, Jake comes to Alan’s aid. But when the men get stranded in the middle of nowhere, Alan is determined to get to town before the sun sets rather than spend the night in the car. Unfortunately, they have to cut across private property to do it. Since it’s trespassing, they could get arrested—or surrounded by a bunch of cowboys hell bent on teaching the trespassers a lesson.

Thankfully, a muscular, stunning cowboy named Colton shows up to save the day. But he’s not about to let Jake off easy. It seems there are still a few lessons to be learned, and it looks like they might involve leather, some handcuffs, and a suspiciously high, padded trunk..

So what did Robyn think?

I loved the characters in this one.  Jake was a submissive at heart but he was also a bit of brat. His ex-boyfriend Alan was hilarious in a douchebucket way but I loved him regardless.

Colton?  Well he was large and imposing and his barn would probably scare most people.  But not Jake, he took to it like a duck to water.

So if you like a bit of D/s with an implied HEA and a quick one to get you in the mood, then look no further.

So grab a cuppa, (or a wine 🍷) and enjoy this kinky little short.

DSP Daily Dose MENDED Anthology – Part 1

These books are part of the DSP Daily Dose Mended Anthology which is a themed story released every day in June.

This year it is all about…..”Each story Life comes with a bit of hurt, but luckily for these men, it also comes with the right amount of comfort to mend their breaks, both of the body and the heart. From facing deranged exes to economic trials, the men in these tales have faced trial by fire–or in some cases water–for the right to love and live. Step into their shoes as they rebuild their family after a gutting betrayal or traverse the stars with an unexpected partner. The Mended Daily Dose package delivers stories about all kinds of second chances built on love.”

Cleary Palit

Cleary Palit

by Zahra Owens

The blurb…

Edward “Ted” Cleary and Cazimir Palit have shared everything for eight years. Well, almost everything. They own a successful business together, share a house in West Hollywood, and never travel anywhere without each other, but they’ve never slept in the same bed.

There’s one more thing Ted hasn’t shared with Caz. Ted has a mother, sister, and brother in Atlanta Caz has never met. With good reason. They threw Ted out when he wouldn’t “change his ways,” and he’s never looked back. When Ted is rejected all over again, Caz steps up and proves he isn’t the superficial man Ted always took him for, and Ted’s long-hidden feelings might finally be returned.

So what did I think?

Cleary Palit is the first story of the package and made a nice start to the collection. I enjoyed the story of long-time business partners Ted and Caz. The men have worked and lived together for years and Ted has pinned for the unattainable Caz. He doesn’t think he’s in Caz’s league or Caz’s type. It takes a family situation where Ted needs support for both men to finally start facing their feelings.

This story provided a bitch of a sister (award winning on the bitch-stakes really), lots of family confrontation and an all-the-way happy ending. It was an interesting romance– not hugely hearts-and-flowers– it’s more about showing feeling with actions. Our hero Ted isn’t totally gorgeous, his body isn’t fabulous, he’s a nerd and can’t see a thing without his glasses. I wanted to shake him to stand up for himself at the beginning of the story but he’d endeared himself by the end.

The Way Things Turn Out

The Way Things Turn Out

by MA Ford

The blurb…

After a serious crash during testing, sports car driver Alan accompanies his injured teammate, Nathan, to the hospital, promising his boss he’ll stay until Nathan’s next of kin can be reached.

Former F1 test driver Nathan was a recent addition to the team, and he and Alan were not on the best of terms. Waiting for Nathan to regain consciousness gives Alan time to think back over the recent races and the ups and downs of their relationship.

Even when Nathan wakes up, Alan remains by his side at the hospital. Nathan is still keeping secrets and needs help more than he’s willing to admit. If they can trust each other, it might open the door to an attraction both assumed was one-sided.

So what did I think?

I’ve got a real soft spot for the books by this author. I think I must be a closet motor sports fan!

It took a little while to settle into reading this comfortably– getting into the flow of the first person present narration, the flashbacks and Alan providing his back story– but once things got going, I really liked it.

It is not surprising that the author has a background in the racing scene due to the level of detail provided. She provides a sense of the lifestyle and does provide information on how the sport works, mentions various tracks and famous drivers but this serves to give the book a realistic setting.

This is a coming-out combined with sort-to-enemies-to-lovers theme – there’s nothing like an accident to bring true feelings to the surface.

The Blurb…

When a would-be assassin sneaks into the citadel disguised as a servant, the king requires that all servants who work in the castle be branded with the royal crest for easy identification. Prince Coren is powerless to fight the edict, but he refuses to allow his personal advisor and secret lover Brannir to suffer alone. Coren shows his devotion by wielding the brand to mark Brannir himself, even though he fears it will change their relationship. He’s prepared for resentment, hurt, and anger–every outcome but the one he receives: unconditional love.

So what did I think?

This is the third story in the DSP Daily Dose Mended anthology. It was short but surprisingly enjoyable. I say ‘surprisingly’ because I’m not usually a big fan of fantasy/historical worlds but this one really worked for me.

The story takes place over one night as Corin needs to brand his servant/lover. I could feel Corin’s pain at having to perform the task and admired Bran’s courage due to his love for the other man. I also liked Finnick, the guard, who was so understanding of their situation and amusing.

Deep Water

by Coral Moore

The blurb…

Mario Guzman is trying out for the swim team, his ticket to paying his way through college. When he meets Jordan Lewis, an outspoken writer for the school’s paper, he considers coming out even though he’s been very private about his sexuality all his life.

Violence intended for Jordan takes Mario out of consideration for the team and threatens his best hope for an education. He lashes out when Jordan tries to help him in his time of need. Eventually Mario regrets driving Jordan away, and his need to apologize takes him to the scene of the attack, where he confronts his pain and terror. This time Jordan is there to help him face the biggest obstacle in his path.

So what did I think?

I liked this story despite not being entirely sold on the attraction between Mario and Jordan which result pretty much in insta-love. But it was still a nice short and sweet story.

Total Immersion

Total Immersion

by Ellis Carrington

The blurb…

Evan Stanton is in over his head. Injured from a fall on campus, he’s let his boyfriend talk him into a senior year total immersion trip—two weeks abroad—only his boyfriend ends up dumping him shortly before takeoff. Evan gets on the plane anyway, but he’s lost his hope and added to his pain.

Chris Bale decided to spend his senior year of college clearing his head after breaking up with the girl he’s dated since high school. He finds himself on a flight to Istanbul next to a surly kid with piercings and guyliner who couldn’t be more his opposite. They strike up a friendship anyway, and as they make their way across a foreign land, Bale realizes he’s too immersed in Evan to let go.

So what did I think?

This short story was lots of fun. I think it might be the first romance I’ve read set in Istanbul so a plus there for originality!

This is the story of poor Evan who starts a tour to Turkey feeling pretty down. He’s just been dumped by his boyfriend plus he has chronic pain from an injury months before. Enter, Bale, the perfect guy to befriend him and become is room-mate. Bale has broken up with is girlfriend and takes Evan under his wing.

It was a sweet story with moments of humour and some little surprises from straight-boy Bale who’s not afraid to jump into a sexual relationship with Evan.

★★★★ A Fighting Man by Sandrine Gasq-Dion★★★★

We are joined by the lovely Mishyjo with a review of A Fighting Man, the third book in The Men of Manhattan series by Sandrine Gasq-Dion. 4 stars!

  • A Betting Man (book #1) – click here for review
  • A Marrying Man (book #2)
  • A Fighting Man (book #3) – in this review

A Fighting Man

The blurb…

Army Ranger Slater Cassidy has a very special – very sexy – target in his sights. Meeting gorgeous, smart, uber-snarky Casper Kennedy was the highlight of Slater’s last trip home to New York. The soldier in him carefully plans his conquest. Unfortunately, Casper’s wearing some seriously strong armor and Slater’s charm offensives bounce right off. Casper’s refusal to fall for him is puzzling – not to mention incredibly annoying. When Slater gets leave again after grueling back-to-back tours in Afghanistan, all he wants is another shot at wooing Casper. He jumps right into the battle for the other man’s heart, but Casper does not intend to entertain the troops. A heartbreaking revelation changes the rules of romantic warfare, and Slater suddenly realizes he doesn’t just want Casper. He wants to capture his heart, too.

Casper Kennedy is fighting a losing battle. A certain outrageously demonstrative Army Ranger has been a thorn in his side since his last trip home – and the main character in his steamiest dreams. Now he’s back. He launches an all-out sensual assault and no matter how hard Casper pushes Slater away, the man somehow manages to inch closer. So close, in fact, that Casper’s once-impenetrable defenses are in danger of collapsing. Should he throw up the white flag and take a chance at love? Or start firing back and keep his heart protected? When the handsome Ranger shows his true colors, Casper just might have to surrender the fight.

So what did I think?

I loved the first book in this series, A Betting Man. Loved it. The second book, A Marrying Man, was a bit of a let down after the high of A Betting Man but still quite good. A Fighting Man, however, is right back up there in the “loved it” classification. Not quite the 5 starts I gave A Betting Man but a very solid 4 stars, maybe even a fraction more.

From book 2 I was already crazy about Casper and the way he rebuffed the sexy but overconfident Slater. In A Fighting Man, however, Casper and Slater become real people and Casper’s standoffish behavior towards Slater transforms from a funny side story to something more serious. Casper is heartbroken and has drawn certain lines in the sand to protect his heart from being broken in the same way again.

A Fighting Man was, to me, the most realistic book of the three stories so far. The issues of survivor’s guilt and dealing with trauma played out in a way that really connected with me. These issues were not too heavy yet they were not glossed over or resolved in a manner that seemed too tidy.

Family matters were also a fairly serious theme addressed in this story. Although we already know that Slater’s family is incredible, Casper isn’t so lucky in that regard. Not only is he missing the support of his own family when he needs it, homophobia robbed him of his right to properly mourn a previously lost loved one. He carries that pain with him and it interferes with his ability to let Slater in.

I am assuming (and hoping) there will be a book 4 to this series. Perhaps Drakon??? Perhaps Mr. Hawke? Perhaps Drakon with Mr. Hawke. I guess we will have to wait and see. One thing is certain though, I hope to be one of the first to read it.

The Blurb…

Coleman Wilder is a half-breed werewolf. Some days the tension between his human side and his werewolf instincts threaten to tear him apart. But the challenge of running a horse farm as a gay man in a conservative Tennessee town keeps him focused until he meets horse shifter, Jonah Marks.

Jonah’s family insists that shifting is sinful, but Jonah longs to let his stallion run free. Desperate to escape his family’s judgment, he asks Cole, his secret crush, for a job. Cole turns him down, scared his desire for Jonah will make him lose control. When Jonah’s brother threatens his life, Cole struggles to save him and give them both a second chance at the life they’ve always wanted.

The boy nodded. “I-yes. I’m Jonah. Cole?”

Cole nodded, unable to make his voice work. Soulful chocolate brown eyes. The smell of newly mown hay, orange groves, and clean young man. No wonder Demon seemed familiar.

“You were Demon.” Cole said, finally able to speak.

Jonah nodded.

Cole couldn’t verbalize his racing thoughts. He was shaking, sick at the thought of what Jonah had suffered, stunned, thankful. His knees threatened to give, and he grabbed the stall door to keep himself upright.

Jonah trembled. “My brother… he locked me in horse form. I forgot who I was. Forgot how… how to be h-human.”

Rage, fear, and a fierce need to protect had Cole ready to rip Nathan Marks apart.

Jonah looked lost and confused.

Cole wanted to pull Jonah into his arms and take his fear away, but he was afraid to move. “Tell me what happened.”

“C-can’t, not now. I… need… hold me.”

Series review: Kinky Quickies by Kim Dare

This series is made up of three relatively short stories – perfect when you just want a little dose of light BDSM!

Kinky Quickies

  • Better Than Sexbook #1
  • Differentbook #2
  • Making It Count book #3

Better Than Sex (Kinky Quickies, #1)

Better Than Sex

by Kim Dare

The Blurb…

Brody has been admiring the new-guy at the engineering firm where he works for the last six months. Wallace is all the things Brody isn’t—confident, stunning, sex on legs, oh, and straight. Brody is resigned to considering working alongside Wallace the highlight of his week and fantasizing about Wallace the full extent of his sex life, but apparently Wallace has other ideas.

The moment he joined the firm, Wallace knew he’d have trouble keeping his hands off Brody. In an effort to stay professional at work he’s kept his sexuality to himself, but that’s about to change. When he hears Brody say that seeing the latest project leave the premises is better than sex, Wallace knows he has to take action. It’s time someone taught Brody how good sex can be—especially when it’s served up with a generous helping of leather.

So what did I think?

Imagine lusting after the ‘straight’ guy at work for months and then finding out he was just waiting for the project to end so that he could focus on what he really wanted– to open your eyes to your truly submissive nature. And it doesn’t take much for Brody to realise that Wallace is absolutely right.

“In that moment, he kne that Wallace really could do anythingwith him–not because he was bigger or stronger, but because Brody would simply let him.”

Cute little quickie with some hot sexiness going on. 3 stars

Different (Kinky Quickies, #2)

by Kim Dare

The blurb..

Matthew and Stuart have been dating for more than five months and Stuart thinks things are going well—right up until the moment Matthew suggests they try something different, the kind of different that involves bondage, spanking and leather.

Matthew’s been building up to making this suggestion for weeks, dropping subtle hints and hoping Stuart won’t completely freak out at the mention of kink. Now, with Matthew’s desires out in the open, all he can do is hope that introducing something different will make their relationship perfect rather than destroy it completely…

What did I think?

I liked the uniqueness of the situation. Two men in an established relationship where one needs to work up the courage to find out whether the other is open to ‘doing something different one night’? And no, Matthew wasn’t talking about taking Stuart out to try some sushi! 🙂

“I do enjoy a little bit of leather now and again,” he admitted.
Casual enough? Too casual? Clear enough to make himself understood? Too likely to make Stuart run for the vanilla flavoured hills?

This is very light BDSM as Matthew shows Stuart what he wants out of their relationship and shows him that he is not like Stuart’s ex.

3.5 stars – it was nice to see the lighter side and focus on the difficulty of broaching a potential delicate topic! 🙂

Making It Count (Kinky Quickies, #3)

Making It Count

by Kim Dare

The blurb…

Duncan’s wanted to do a scene with Toby ever since he met him in their first study group of the year, but when Toby failed to flirt back, or pick up on a single kinky hint, Duncan knew he had no choice but to back off. He always thought that Toby would be interesting if he ever came out of the kinky closet—but it never even occurred to Duncan that he’d suddenly find the boy standing on the doorstep of the club he runs.

Toby’s been fascinated and intimidated by Duncan in equal measure for months. When his flat-mate bails out on a kinky play-date with Duncan at the last moment, Toby’s need overtakes his nervousness. Before he has time to think twice, he’s there, offering himself up as a replacement sub for the night.

This might be the only chance Toby has to fulfill all his fantasies surrounding Duncan—and he’s determined to make it count.

So what did I think?

This is the perfect story for those wanting to explore something a little different – not too kinky, but an interesting start as Toby has to prove how much he wants to spend some time playing with Duncan.

Duncan usually plays with Mike, his flatmate, but Mike can’t make their regular appointment so Toby goes in his place. Inexperienced, he doesn’t really know what he’s agreeing to.

A little bit of voyeurism starts the scene as Toby is left to kneel before a closed front door to show Duncan just how far he is willing to go.

3 stars for this little quickie.

Tabby’s Pride by K-lee Klein

Rock stars and shifters make a great combination!

Tabby's Pride

Tabby’s Pride

by K-lee Klein

The blurb…

Levi Tabberton has dreamed of being a rock star ever since his brother’s best friend, Alexander Morrison, showed him his guitar when he was young. But becoming a member of his boyhood crush’s band, Lion’s Pride, is even more important.

Growing up, Levi emulated Alexander, and now, years later, that feeling remains when he auditions for the band. Xan is laidback, caring, gorgeous, and takes Levi under his wing—or rather, his paw. But Levi’s guilt and insecurity hold him back from letting Xan see the real him.

Levi needs to prove himself worthy of the band and deserving of Xan’s attention, but the lengths to which he’s gone have left him reeling with anxiety and exhaustion. Levi’s not sure how much longer he can pull off his charade to reach his goals and to keep Xan’s affections.

Has he made the right choice by putting on an act, or will his dreams fade in a catastrophe of lies and uncertainty?

So what did I think?

This shifter story was a little bit of fun! The shifter plus the rock star element was an interesting combination especially when Tabby/Levi’s secret is added into the mix. Levi is desperate to join the band, Lion’s Pride, that his childhood friend Xan is a member of, so desperate that he has gone to extreme lengths to do so.

The story follows the growing relationship between Levi and Xan and the struggles Levi faces as he battles the physical effects resulting from his actions and the mental anguish of deceiving his lover.

This is more a typical romance where not a lot of shifting actually happens although the fact these guys are shifters is key to the story. For that reason, this book might make a good ‘starter’ story for for someone who is new to the genre and wants to check it out.

It was entertaining and had a cute twist at the end. 3.5 stars

Happy reading!

Nic xx

Royal Line

Sean Michael

The blurb…

Tiger-shifter Grio has one job, locating dormant tiger-shifters and introducing them to the world of Saffron Tigers. When he finds Professor Phoenix Lamoure, he soon discovers that Headquarters got a couple of key points wrong—Phoenix isn’t actually a professor, but he is Saffron Tiger royalty, a member of the lost royal line.

Phoenix didn’t have things easy growing up. His mother spent most of her life in a mental institution, and he spent his formative years in foster care. When a stranger approaches and tries to unearth his family history, Phoenix becomes wary. And when the stranger actually kidnaps him, all bets are off!

Can Phoenix ever believe what Grio has to tell him? Or will he be forever convinced that he’s as crazy as his mother?

So what did Robyn think?

There was a lot going on in this short story and it was very fast paced. Phoenix is a long lost prince of the tiger shifter line, but he doesn’t know it.  It’s Grio’s job to show him who he really is and train him how not to shift in public because who would want a wild tiger roaming the city streets?  What neither man expected was to find their ‘mate’.  And mate they did.  For short story their were quite a few sex scenes, whilst short were still fairly hot.
So if you like your shifters and have a spare hour give this one a go.

Hope you enjoy!

The blurb…

This title is part of the Purrfect Tales AmberPax™ Collection.

Although veterinary technician Carlton is violently allergic to cats, he loves them with an undying passion, enough to tolerate miserable symptoms to keep working with the felines in the San Maribal Zoo. The cheetahs especially fascinate him. Then he meets a mysterious stranger who is evasive about why he’s in the zoo after hours, and nude! This man tells Carl there’s a cat inside him wanting to get out. That sounds really crazy, and the suggested way to make the shift happen sounds even crazier—but exciting.
Zyl is a member of the ancient shifter tribe, or Were-Kind. His people are working to enforce humane treatment of animals and save endangered species. Hearing of a planned raid by an extreme animal rights group to free the denizens of zoos, they realize this will be a catastrophe. Joining forces with regular humans to avert the problem will mean “coming out” as the powerful beings they are. Again, a potential disaster. Attracted against his better judgment, Zyl teams up with the cat lover he met under awkward circumstances only to discover a valuable ally and a soul mate..

Miles and the Magic Flute

by Heidi Cullinan

The Blurb…

When unemployed Miles Larson retreats to his friend’s Minnesota pawnshop to lick his wounds, he discovers that a few notes on a magical instrument reveal an erotic fairyland where the sorrows weighing on his heart don’t exist at all.

Yet fantasy comes with a price, and soon Miles must choose a path. He can surrender his soul to the dreamlord to sustain his pleasure… or he can defeat the faerie and save the mysterious beast-man who promises love. Miles would choose love over pleasure in a heartbeat—if only to seize it he didn’t first have to acknowledge the pain inside.

Is Miles strong enough to learn that sometimes to find happiness, we must face down our sorrows?

This title has been previously published and has been revised from its original release.

An Excerpt…

“Who is he? Why was he after me? Why are you here? Why am I here? Where is here?”

“Philosophy!” Terris lolled his head to his shoulder and gave Miles a weary look. “Darling, it’s a dream. How many of your dreams are logical?”

“It feels more real than any dream I’ve ever had.”

“Even as real as the one you had in Atlanta?” Terris asked, as he reached down between them and picked up a small box from the floor.

“Which dream in Atlanta? I lived there ten years.” Miles watched as Terris put the box into his own lap. The box was made of silver and tied with a glittering white ribbon. It made Miles think of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, and as soon as he put that together with the sleigh and the castle, he realized that Terris really did make a pretty good White Witch.

Terris laughed. “Except Edward didn’t get a hand job, did he?” He held the box out to Miles. “Here, darling. This is for you.”

Miles took the box carefully, trying to be wary, but he couldn’t help feeling eager. It was a beautiful present, the most elegant and classy kind of present that he’d always wanted but had never received. Which was a stupid thing to think.

“Why is it stupid to want something nice?” Terris nudged his hand toward the ribbon. “Go on. Open it, and enjoy yourself.”

Miles put his fingers to the ribbon, but he didn’t pull. He looked up at Terris instead. “What did you mean, the dream in Atlanta? Which dream?”

“Your whole life was a dream while you were there. Just as it is now.” When Miles sputtered, Terris laughed again and touched his cheek. “You’re so charming when you’re obstinate. Go on then, darling. Tell me about some other dream from that time that I could mean.”

Miles tried, not sure what he was looking for but determined to somehow prove Terris wrong, because that was absolutely ridiculous, to imply he’d dreamed that he’d worked in Atlanta. He tried to think of one dream, even a boring one, to offer up, but honestly, he couldn’t come up with anything. Nothing he remembered, anyway. It was odd to think he hadn’t dreamed in ten years, but apparently he hadn’t.

But he had lived there. He had! He’d paid rent, for crying out loud! Besides, if he were going to dream he lived somewhere, it wouldn’t be in Atlanta.

“You don’t need to be asleep to dream.”
