REVIEW: Johnnie by Cardeno C.

A Premier lion shifter, Hugh Landry dedicates his life to leading the Berk pride with strength and confidence. Hundreds of people depend on Hugh for safety, success, and happiness. And at over a century old, with more power than can be contained in one body, Hugh relies on a Siphon lion shifter to carry his excess force.

When the Siphon endangers himself and therefore the pride, Hugh must pay attention to the man who has been his silent shadow for a decade. What he learns surprises him, but what he feels astounds him even more.

Two lions, each born to serve, rely on one another to survive. After years by each other’s side, they’ll finally realize the depth of their potential, the joy in their passion, and a connection their kind has never known.

What did I think?

If you are looking for a different shifter story, C. Cardeno wrote one for you. This is a lion shifter story about a black alpha lion and his Siphon. The alpha premier is named Hugh, who is well above average human size and weight… doesn’t that sound so sexy to you? It does to me!

“The Siphon” is a new concept so it took a while for me to get into it, but who cares because this “Siphon” is nothing less than adorable and lovable. He was more than a living, breathing receptor of the Premiere’s overflowing power, but not in the eyes of the pack including their alpha. He was seen but not noticed so the story starts dramatically, which instantly drew me into it. It is rare that a writer bases a story of a character with issues such as the Siphon. The way Cardeno wrote about the Siphon’s feelings and his actions was harrowing and compelling. You need to read these parts to understand what I mean so I shall say nothing more to make sure you get the most out of the story because Siphon and his behavior play a crucial part in the story.

His despair broke my heart, but it also pushed his Premier to notice him for the first time… wow! This part was also written beautifully and with total empathy. I can visualize Hugh the Premier struggling to understand why Siphon was the way he was but I respected Hugh for trying to understand what was hurting the younger man.

Reading how they start re-establishing their relationship was nothing less than endearing because they were both learning something new about each other and about themselves. I found this part in the story also very engaging and captivating.

Hugh is the ultimate alpha male who cares, protects and is totally into his pack. I liked how Cardeno wrote parts from Hugh’s perspective because I had a glimpse into how his mind worked and his own personal struggles. For me, he was like any other alpha male in a great story, so what made this story different and captivating was the Siphon. I felt tearful when I read the part where Siphon was given his first proper name and he was named Johnnie.  Johnnie makes this story memorable for me. He is probably one of the most unforgettable fictional heroes for me so I just loved him.

The story has a great plot because it is very different and flows all the way through. I adored reading how the tender love grew between Hugh and Johnnie. I thought the sensuality between these two was sizzling, smoking hot. I mean, how wouldn’t anyone not like the thought of a very sensuous but innocent virgin male with an alpha male who has a high sex drive and massive pleasure giving spikes on his man-bits. I think part of the dialogue in the story was a little repetitive and not as unique as the plot was but it did not diminish the pleasure of reading this story which started with sadness and despair and ended beautifully.

INTERVIEW: Stay With Me by A.L. Lamb

Today we’ve been joined by our good friend Lily who is celebrating the release of her first story. She has kindly provided us with an interview.

stay with me

It has been weeks since Curtis first saw the young waiter with the haunted eyes. No matter how often he went to the café watching him and to find the right opportunity to introduce himself, that moment simply did not come. Joseph was aware of the gentle giant who quietly came to have his lunch and then left. Fearing his father’s wrath and under his ever watchful eyes, he made no moves nor overtures. Until one day…

Congratulations on the release of your first book! I know what a wonderful and terrifying journey it is. I was hoping you could share a little of your experience with your new fans.

Firstly the cover. The cover, with its pretty Frangipani’s is eye catching, and obviously gives a clue to the characters. Can you share with us a little about the cover design process, and how difficult it was to capture the essence of the book?

I was lucky to meet with Melissa Bell, who is the cover artist because she was so patient with me. Frangipani played a big part at the beginning of the story for Joseph but I couldn’t picture it in my head to reflect how important it then was…Melissa is one of those artists who can truly feel the empathy and then reflect what the writer imagined in their mind and voila! Choosing the models was also hard because in my head, I visualized both Curtis and Joseph when I was writing, so meanwhile Melissa had to look for them. We went through many photos, but for both of us these two models stood out and looked good together.

Where did the inspiration for the story come from?

I love the site “intergaycial” on Facebook and follow their posts religiously. The happy stories on that page and the sad news that we often read in the newspapers about how the gay community is marginalized inspired me.

Can you tell us a little about your characters, Joseph and Curtis?

I love reading romance stories about characters who feel real to me and I always thought that is really what love is about… loving someone with all their quirks, and humanness. Curtis is that person to me. He is slightly overweight, introvert and a little insecure about his body shape because of his previous experience. He worked hard and lived  an honest life, whereas Joseph was a  downtrodden underweight waiter who was struggling to get out of the rut that he was living in. His character is inspired by the current issues that happen around the world and sadly we read about them in the newspapers. I wanted to dream a happy ending story for them.

Are there any secrets from the book (that aren’t in the blurb), you can share with your readers?

Oh….I would love to tell you, but do not want to spoil the story because it is a short one… I tried to write it in a way that everything flows and takes the reader along with them … but you know it has a happy end.

What do you have planned next? Are there more stories in the pipeline?

I wrote a very short story for “Queerromance” Anthology but finished it late, so  I am finishing that one to add it to the one I am actually writing. That story is again about two wounded heroes. I personally love the plot so I am studying and doing some research for the characters’ backgrounds. I hope to publish those two stories together. This should be in about two months time.

I’m sure your readers would love to get to know a little more about you. How do you spend your time when you are not reading, reviewing or writing?

My motto is books are a girl’s best friend and it was never the diamonds so I read every day. My other passion is sewing my own clothes and making gifts. I get a lot of joy out of surprising people with little handmade gifts that are made with love and care. I think that that is my purpose in life; doing something meaningful for others. I am also a serial café crawler. I love sitting in cafes wearing my quirky designs and sipping a cup of good coffee whilst day dreaming. Did I tell you, I love day dreaming?  I am also very vocal about Human Rights issues.

Thank for joining us, Lily. All the best with your book.

Life isn’t always fair, and that’s something that Llewellyn Gardner knows about first hand. His life was on the fast track until one night of extreme passion changed everything.

Now eight years later, he’s still living with the aftershocks of that night. Everywhere he turns or runs, there’s another reminder. What the hell do you do when you try to drown your demons only to find out they can swim?

Shane Smith, Jr. owner of Smith Construction, could see the emotional turmoil within his new employee — it’s why he hired him. There was something about the gorgeous, misunderstood man with the overly expressive eyes that came to their small town with a past no one was willing to overlook. Shane could see the good in Llewellyn, and those eyes of his were a clear window to his soul. Shane wasn’t going to let the man live a future of solitude because his past had been plagued with deceit.

Llewellyn wasn’t sure what to think about Shane. After years of protecting himself from being tricked twice, he was now faced with worry again. What would happen to him if Shane didn’t believe his truth, and walked away? Llewellyn wasn’t sure he’d be able to survive being left alone. Again.

“Thinking of going in? Or are you just gonna block the entrance?”

Llew turned at the sound of the sure voice behind him. Since he seemed to tower over everyone he looked down at the pretty brunette with dark brown eyes to match. “Um. Sorry.” Llew mumbled quickly moving out of her way.

“Well don’t be sorry shuga’, just escort a lady inside.” Llew didn’t blink as he watched the lady stalk towards him. Her full chest sat above an extremely narrow waist. It almost looked unnatural. She dressed and wore the amount of makeup that a grown woman would, but her smooth face and approach screamed her real age. She was jailbait if he’d ever seen one. Llew gave her a slight head nod and turned to leave when his elbow was hooked.

“I saw you in the general store applying for a job. You musta’ jus’ got into town, because if not I’d have known, honey. So you got kin here?”

The laugh was an all-out immature giggle and it graded on his nerves. “Cat got your tongue, darlin’”. She moved in even closer and dragged a long red nail down Llew’s arm, tilting her head back to look up at him. “You want me to beg, huh? Come on now, handsome. Escort a lady to a movie… then maybe -”

“Maybe when he sees’ a lady… he’ll escort one.”

Llew diverted his attention away from the overzealous minx that was practically humping his leg and focused on the beautiful man approaching with another guy in tow. His voice wasn’t overly deep like his own, it was a smooth and melodic southern drawl. Like he could be a singer or a poet. He walked with an unhurried gait that was a mixture of ‘I’m in charge’ and ‘you’re on my time, not the other way around’, and Llew found it sexy as fuck. His tall friend chuckled behind him, moving away to purchase their tickets. Is he on a date? No, their demeanor definitely said ‘friends.’

“Mind ya’ own business Smith, Jr. I saw him first.”

Smith, Jr.

The man hooked one thumb in his pocket not the slightest bit fazed at the remark. But Llew was thrown. Was this guy actually gay or was she being a smart aleck? The man gave him nothing to go on. He moved closer towards them and Llew got a nice whiff of his spicy, bold cologne when a cool breeze blew his way. It was an interesting contradiction, because the man’s entire persona said ‘cool and composed’.

“Mosey along, Sallie Ann. Don’t make me ring ya’ daddy. He told me keep an eye on you while he’s gone and I agreed. He’d be rather put out if I didn’t follow through on my promise.”

She reluctantly let go of his arm, letting loose a long drawn out huff of annoyance. Llew didn’t bother watching her walk away. She was irrelevant. With his hands tucked deep in his pockets he eyed the man in front of him with a mixture of curiosity and wistfulness.

“Sometimes a person has gotta’ run interference with that girl. She’s usually not that bad but her daddy’s outta’ town, so ya’ know how young girls can be.”

Actually, not really.

“Hi. I’m Shane Smith, Jr.” he stuck out a large, calloused hand and it took Llew a couple seconds to process that he was going to touch him. Llew shook his hand, his mouth still closed tight as he watched the man’s eyes. They were light brown and full of humor and amusement. He immediately thought that this was obviously a guy who had little worries if any in life. Wait a minute…Smith….Jr. Is he the owner of? He let go of the strong grip on his hand and wished he’d been able to hold it a little longer.

“And you are?”

Llew swallowed before answering. “Llew.”

Those eyes twinkled again and dark brown brows rose up in question. “Llew…just Llew.”

It was a humiliation when a man hated to tell someone his name. But by doing so it meant that they would soon know who he really was. Know who he was classified as. He didn’t want this man to know that, god help him he didn’t. But lying wasn’t an option.  Fuck it. “Llewellyn Gardner.”

So many broke eye contact with him and Llew was more than intrigued that Mr. Shane Smith, Jr. was staring at him just as hard as he was staring back. He didn’t know why he was looking at him that way but he didn’t mind it.

“Now that’s a name.” Smith smiled beautifully.

Llew wasn’t sure if this guy was flirting with him or not, he’d been in a place where flirting didn’t exist for so long, he’d forgotten what it looked like…what it sounded like. The way Shane Smith, Jr. was smiling at him it sure seemed like it. Llew could imagine himself with a strong man like this. A man who was gorgeous but didn’t know it. Not overly done up in fancy digs, he was dressed like a working man but he wore that look well. He appeared simple but confident, like a man that followed his own counsel and was not easily persuaded. But Llew wouldn’t dare get his hopes up. As soon as word got out that there was a newly registered sex offender in their quaint little town, Smith, Jr. might be leading the lynch mob to run him out of there.

Happy release day for Out of the Blue by RJ Jones

Some of you may know that RJ is a co-owner here at Two Men. Some of you may even know that her debut novel is being released today. Take a closer look…

The Blurb…

When everything happens Out of the Blue…

Lt Cameron Cooper has been with the San Francisco Fire Department for fifteen years. He’s seen and dealt with a lot of horrifying situations. He’s always considered himself mentally tough, but when he attends a multi-vehicle accident and sees a dead boy with features remarkably similar to his long-time boyfriend, his mental health takes a hit.

All Jake Montgomery wants is to propose to his boyfriend on their ten-year anniversary. He’s already bought the perfect rings, but when Cameron struggles to look at him after a tragic accident, he has doubts about their future. Cam is withdrawing, and Jake doesn’t know why.

With heated arguments and cold shoulders, Cam and Jake’s life starts to fall apart. Just when Cam thinks he can overcome his issues and finally talk to Jake, memories from Jake’s past threaten to push them apart forever.

 The Excerpt…

“Jesus, Jake, you need to do something,” she blurted one night.

“Like what?” I snapped, instantly on the defensive.

“I don’t know. You’re miserable without him. Call him, talk to him. See someone else.” She paused for a long moment. “Here, give me your wallet,” Caroline demanded as she held out her hand, and confused, I pulled it from my pocket and gave it to her.

She plucked a small foil square from her purse, placed it inside, then slapped the wallet into my hand. “There. Now you can go and find someone else.”

The thought of being with someone other than Cam made me shudder, but if Cam and I couldn’t fix us, what then? I’d have to move on eventually, but Cam not being in my life hurt too much to think about. I missed him like nothing else. I missed the way we used to be, the feeling of his arms around me and the sense of safety they’d bring. I missed his shining amber eyes and the love I would see in them, just for me.

Caroline was right. I was miserable without him, to the point I didn’t recognize myself anymore. The man staring back at me in the mirror had pale sallow skin and huge sad eyes. His features were lined and haunted.

My shoulders slumped, and Caroline’s voice softened. “I know you’re hurting, and it hurts me to see you like this. Yes, Cam screwed up, but he needs you and I know you need him.”

“You’ve spoken to him.” It wasn’t a question. I knew she had, but she never mentioned the calls.

“Yes. He’s called me a few times to check on you, make sure you’re okay.”

“What, he’s checking up on me now?” Aaand… I was back on edge.

“Oh for god’s sake, Jake. You’re his life, he wants to make sure you’re okay.”

I crossed my arms.

Caroline threw her hands in the air. “Oh, for crying out loud. He’s worried about you. He always worries about you whether he needs to or not.”

“So… what? You’re taking his side now?” I couldn’t believe she’d do this, and my face flushed with my boiling blood. How could she take Cam’s side when he was the one in the wrong and she was my best friend?

“No, I’m not taking his side. I’m not taking your side either. I’m on Jake and Cam’s side. If two people were ever meant to be together, it’s you two. I saw it from the start back in college. Christ, don’t you see what you two have? You can’t throw that away. If you can’t make this work, then what’s going to happen to me?” she yelled, wiping away angry tears.

My anger fled and confusion took its place. “What do you mean? Nothing’s going to happen to you, or to us. We’ll always be here for each other.”

“You idiot, we’ll be fine,” she snorted through her tears. “I mean what will happen to me? How am I ever going to find my one and make it work if you and Cam can’t figure it out? Don’t you see what you’ve got? You found the love of your life, your other half, and you can’t tell me you’re not feeling his absence. I can see it written all over your face. You miss him.”

Ever The Same

by BA Tortuga

Audie Barrack is in it up to his elbows with a sick calf when his son’s school calls. Seems Grainger has gotten into yet another fight. When he walks into the principal’s office, he’s shocked to find his son has been fighting with a little girl named Randi.

A little girl with one blind dad and one dad who recently passed away.

Dixon has lost his sight, his career, and his husband. Thank God for his brothers, Momma and Daddy, and his little girl, or he would simply give up. The last thing he needs is for Randi to start trouble at school, especially trouble that puts him in contact with another dad who might expect him to be a functional human being.

Dixon is struggling to live as a blind man, Audie is terrified someone might see he has a closet to come out of, and everyone from the school to both men’s families is worried for the men and their children. Unless they get themselves together and commit to change, neither of them stands a chance.

Exclusive Excerpt

“To ’pare?” He carefully poured the milk.

“Uh-huh. Pappy says you put one against the other. Joy the llama is nicer than Ben the llama. You ’pare.”

“Oh. Com-pare, baby.”

“Oh. Compare.” He could hear the serious look on her baby face. God, he missed seeing her smile, watching her lips purse when she did something new.

For the thousandth time this week, Dixon gave thanks that Randi had been at the babysitter’s, that it had been them alone in the car. Ron had been killed instantly, and he was grateful for that.

“Daddy, stop pouring.”

He pulled back. “Did I make it?”

“You did good.” She mopped up his spill so quietly, but he still heard it.

“Okay. Cookies. Milk. Let’s sit and dunk.”

“It’s not like him to pick on someone who’s having a hard time.”

“Of course it’s not. Randi’s the one that’s the vicious little bitch, right?”

Damn, Mr. Snooty could snap.

“What? She’s had a shit life for the last year. She lost one of her dads, she had to leave Austin and her friends and her school, and suddenly she’s the fucking bad guy?”

“Hey, I never said my boy was perfect,” Audie said, snarling a little himself. “He’s managed to get to six without trying to kill anyone, though, so this is new. Back off.”

“Enough. No one is saying either of these children are bad. Randi has a huge number of hurdles to overcome, and Grainger is a shy little boy with a tendency to follow the crowd. Neither of these children have mothers at home, and I was hoping we could brainstorm some ways to help Randi feel included with the others.”

This was ridiculous. It wasn’t his fucking job to make sure this asshole’s little brat felt like she didn’t need to punch his son anymore.

“That’s her teacher’s job, Shannon.” Audie was through with this shit. “I’ll tell my boy to stay away from her. Can we go now?”

“Yes. Yes, of course. Mr. White….”

“I’ll talk to her. If it happens again, I’ll… shit, I don’t know what I’ll do. I’ll make it up as I go along.” The guy stood, and his mom handed him a cane. A white cane.

Oh, Jesus fucking Christ. Seriously? Seriously, Grainger picked the kid with a blind dad and a dead….

A note from Nico: Some of you might be wondering what First Shift means to an alpha werewolf in this universe. Well…here’s a little taste of the opening scene. Hope you like it!

He’d suspected nine days ago, but he hadn’t dared to hope.

This night, though, with the first full moon since he’d started at Dilarium, confirmed it.

Curled up on his side in the living room of his subleased townhome, Tanner gritted his teeth, his eyes squeezing shut as he felt the irrepressible movement of bones shifting beneath his skin. The silky carpet was cool and soft against his cheek, and he pressed his face into it, struggling with that over which he had absolutely no control. His body was on fire, his blood pumping through his veins at supersonic speed. An invisible spike pierced his fingertips, one by one, while his jaw rearranged itself on his face.

He couldn’t hold back the scream that ripped through him as he felt his spine stretch, then curve, turning him into that one elusive form he’d craved for all of these years: werewolf.

A First Shift was supposed to be the hardest.

The first time bone broke and mended in its transformation into that creature of the night. The first time claws extended, pointed tips puncturing nail beds to replace human fingers. The first time fangs punched out, the teeth of a hunter replacing those of a benign human.

A First Shift was shocking. It was thrilling. It was painful.

Above all, it was exhilarating.

A First Shift meant he had found his mate.

Talking with Nico:

Hi! Thank you so much to Because Two Men Are Better Than One for inviting me to chat a little about my new book, He’s Just Knot That Into You. I had a lot of fun writing this fluffy werewolf novella and am excited for you to meet Tanner and Jon. =) Right now I’m touring the web to talk about the book, how it came about, my processes—and anything else that comes to mind, to be honest. Of course, a blog tour wouldn’t be complete without a giveaway, so please check out those details at the end of the post!

Today I’ll be talking a little bit about bow ties. Jon has a particular affinity for bow ties, and Tanner can’t help but notice the various different patterns Jon shows up to work wearing.

Plaid? Polka dots? Argyle?

Jon’s got ’em all.

Some of you might be wondering why Jon wears bow ties. In a world of business casual, surely he’d be more comfortable in an open-necked button down or a polo shirt, right?

Well, it all started when he began to work at Dilarium Press. You see, Jon’s been blessed (or cursed?) with a baby face, and when he first started at Dilarium, almost everyone he encountered thought he was an intern and treated him as such. Once he began dressing more business than casual, though, he finally got the professional treatment he deserved. Of course, it also helped that he was great at his job, but we all know first impressions make a big difference, too.

In HJKTIY, Tanner’s first impressions of a lot of people end up being vital information for him because he meets his mate that first day he starts working at Dilarium. Unfortunately, his first impression of Jon is of a too-young-for-Tanner guy whose baby face suggests he’s much younger than he really is.

How does Jon overcome that first impression? How does Tanner learn to look past that initial judgment? You can find out in He’s Just Knot That Into You! =) If you decide to check out the book, I hope Jon and Tanner leave you with some sweet and memorable first (and second!) impressions.

Author Bio:

Nico Jaye is a fan of all things HEA and has dragged her romance collection along for her moves from San Francisco to Los Angeles to Chicago to New York and back. She thinks reading is awesome and loves that she can hang out night after night with crinoline-wearing debutantes, brawny firemen in suspenders, and werewolf shifters with Scottish brogues. An overall feline enthusiast, Nico secretly (or not so secretly?) adores Hello Kitty, cat GIFs, spontaneous traveling, pretending to be crafty, emoticons, hot menfolk, and parenthetical statements (not necessarily in that order). After starting as the pitcher for Team Awesome (literally) and visiting places like South Africa, Oman, and Fiji, Nico discovered that letting the boys in her head tell her where they want to go could actually be the most exciting journey of all.

Taber Delane is lucky to be alive, but his career as a firefighter ended the day a beam snapped, resulting in a crushing spinal injury. Most of his friends are willing to give him space, everyone except paramedic, Deacon Hall.

Deacon hasn’t met a challenge he couldn’t tackle and he knows Taber needs someone in his corner who isn’t afraid to stand up to the big bad fireman. The longer he’s around Taber, the more the sexy vulnerability of the man comes through. Deacon finds he doesn’t just want to be Taber’s live-in caregiver, he wants a chance at the passionate man beneath the stubborn shell. A shell that is cracking, no matter how Taber tries to hold it together.

Deacon being in his home starts to open him up—and open his eyes to the man Deacon hides from the rest of the world. Without seeing it coming, Taber soon craves more. A lot more.

Now if only Deacon can get Taber to see that it isn’t so bad having him there to assist. Even if and maybe especially when Taber is naked, dripping wet, and angry as hell.

“You’re not giving me a sponge bath,” Taber snapped and glowered at Deacon as he wheeled himself into the locker bay. The sweat ran down his temples, his shirt soaked through with it. He took in his motionless legs and grimaced before shooting Deacon another irritated look.

Deacon sat with his feet on one of the peeling dark blue benches, his back reclined against a bank of gray lockers along the far wall in the physical therapy building. A book was balanced on his knees, and black-rimmed glasses perched on his nose. His shaggy auburn hair fell to curl around his ears in disarray.

Deacon peered at him with pale green eyes. “There go my dreams of rubbing you down and tweeting the pics.”

They say opposites attract but can they make love last?

Greg Mitchell’s entire childhood was filled with violence and abuse.  That was until he came to work on the Heath Farm. His life was forever changed for the better, including meeting Brian Stockwell. From the first moment Greg met Brian he’s been in love.  But a threat his father made four years ago has always held him back from pursuing any real relationship with Brian. That was until he learns his father is on his deathbed and of no further harm to himself or Brian.

Greg finds out his family ties are stronger than he thought and they hold Greg back from really getting to know Brian the way he truly wants to.  Both men discover that they have more differences than they originally thought.

Every time Greg Mitchell looked at Brian Stockwell, he hurt. It was like a physical ache in his chest where his heart should be. Greg caught a glimpse of the man he had been obsessed with for the past four years and that ache started up. Brian didn’t even know Greg existed and even thinking about that made Greg feel like he was in high school all over again.

Greg was coming out of the barn, just getting ready to get cleaned up for an evening class he had to commute too. This was his last semester of college and he thanked God every day for that fact. He couldn’t wait to get done. The commute from the farm to school was a bitch, especially this past winter when the snow was up to the windows of his truck and his dick practically fell off every time he went from the bunkhouse to one of the barns. Greg was just glad that it was summer for his last class ever. He didn’t have to worry about the roads being covered in ice and the cold seeping into his bones.

The sun didn’t go down until about the same time Greg got home from class, so he didn’t even have to worry about driving at night in a large city. Although, living in Pickleville his whole life meant every city was large. Living in a small town also meant driving anywhere after ten o’clock at night was an unusual occurrence for anyone who lived here. For a farmhand like Greg that was especially true. Greg had been so focused on finishing school for so long that he just didn’t have time for any extracurricular activities.

Greg sighed as he watched Brian step out of the main house. Brian had shorts on, khaki’s and a dark blue t-shirt. Even from as far away as Greg was, he could see Brian’s cute little nose wriggle his glasses further up his nose. His dark hair had that messy, spiky look that seemed to be at odds with Brian’s nerdy personality type.

Greg rolled his eyes at himself. He couldn’t blame his lack of a social life entirely on his college classes. If Brian ever did give him the time of day Greg still wouldn’t pursue any type of relationship. And he longed to have Brian under him, naked.

Greg sighed again. Roger Mitchell’s parting words four years ago were not an empty threat. Greg’s father was more than capable of following through on hurting anyone Greg even came close to dating. Roger would know too. Greg had seen him on campus more than once throughout the years he had been attending the University.

Yeah, it sounded crazy. It was crazy but it was Greg’s truth. Greg would live in it.

INTERVIEW with GIVEAWAY: Becoming His Master by M.Q. Barber

Title: Becoming His Master
Series: Neighborly Affection #4
Author: M.Q. Barber
Genre: Adult, M/M Erotica
Release Date: March 17, 2015
Published By: Lyrical Press
From rescue to romance…
Teach a wounded submissive the value of his service. The task ought to be an easy one for an experienced dominant like Henry Webb.
But novice Jay Kress challenges his teacher like no other. Still bearing the bruises of an encounter outside the bounds of safe consensual play, Jay is desperate to submit to the man who saved him—and shamed by his desires.
Henry recognizes the dangers of a relationship built on hero worship. He’ll teach Jay how to stay safe, that’s all. He won’t take advantage of the younger man’s trust. He won’t share his fantasies about his dark-haired, athletic student. He’ll never claim this submissive for his own…

Congratulations on your new release. It’s great to have you visiting us at Two Men. Thanks for providing us with the opportunity to ask you a few questions.

This is the fourth book in the Neighboring Affection series. The other stories highlight the menage relationship between two men and a woman. This story is focused on the m/m relationship. Why have you focused on Henry and Jay this time?

M.Q.: Henry insisted. Becoming His Master is the origin story for Henry and Jay’s relationship; it can be read as a standalone or before or after the other books in the series, which are narrated by Alice, the woman they invite into their relationship later.

Jay shares bits and pieces of his background in the other books, but as I was writing those scenes, Henry began demanding to tell the whole story from his point of view. I couldn’t help but give in; Henry can be very closed-off with his emotions, and the opportunity to get inside his head and heart for a whole book was too exciting to pass up.

Falling for Jay fundamentally changed the course of Henry’s life at least as much as being rescued by Henry changed the course of Jay’s. Over the years, the two of them have built an incredibly strong, loving relationship. How they got there is a story that deserved to be told.

Jay or Henry? Does one of the characters hold a special place in your heart?

M.Q.: Oh, they both do, absolutely. Jay’s the sweetheart and Henry’s the stoic.

I can count on Jay to lighten a heavy moment or to drop a stunning bit of intuitive knowledge that changes the situation entirely. He’s as restless as Henry is reserved. But his charm comes in two forms – the fidgety-flirt surface kind that deflects strangers and the deeper contentment he finds in submission to Henry. Jay grows so much stronger over the course of the series, and I’m proud of his evolution.

Henry, on the other hand, is the seductive dominant gentleman. He’s constantly observing others and refining his impressions. He gives little of himself away while he’s gently, insistently coaxing information from his quarry. He makes mistakes, but he’s confident enough and honest enough to admit when he does and to correct them. He’s devoted to the health and welfare of his submissives, and they love him for it.

I love the sound of the blurb. It sounds like just the type of story I like reading – something to tug a little on the heartstrings. How do you deal with the emotional impact of a book (on yourself) as you are writing the story?

M.Q.: I write in short bursts, one scene at a time, and whenever possible I make sure I have some emotional recovery time afterward. I try to sink deep into the characters’ headspace when I’m writing. Coming out of that mode is foggy sometimes.

But the thing I like to remember is that pain can lead to character growth. I often write the last scene of a book first, and I’ll re-read that scene when I’m having difficulty, because it reminds me that the characters’ struggles are meaningful and bending toward a beautiful outcome.

What book is currently sitting on your bedside table?

M.Q.: Actually, I never have a book on my nightstand – I have a notepad, a pen, and a small flashlight. The time right before falling asleep is a fertile one for ideas, and I’ve long since gotten tired of traipsing out to my desk to write one down before I forget it.

But the books I’m itching to read next are the newest ones from Jim Butcher, Scott Lynch, and Elizabeth Haydon. I’ve been a fantasy reader since I was young, when I’d lose myself for hours in Pern and Valdemar and a dozen other worlds.

What’s next in the series? Can your readers expect another installment?

M.Q.: They can! I recently finished writing the manuscript for the fifth book, and I’m editing that now. I also write a short fiction exclusive every month for newsletter subscribers (; the Tuesdays with Jay stories are from Jay’s point of view and cover events that aren’t shown in the main novels.

Are you able to surprise us with any little snippets or teasers about the story that aren’t in the blurb?

M.Q.: Readers of the series so far know Jay’s safeword, but they don’t know his reason for choosing it. Henry gets the story out of him in Becoming His Master. And those who’ve read the series short story Three-Way Tie might recognize a familiar toy the first time Jay gets to play with it. Becoming His Master is structured so that you don’t have to read any other part of the series to enjoy it as a standalone, but it’s particularly rich and rewarding for those who want to immerse themselves in the Neighborly Affection universe.

Henry’s watch
showed quarter to eight as he mounted the stairs toting carryout meals for
himself and his submissive. The hour found the second floor a modest hive of
activity as players donned their preferred personas and headed upstairs to the
sandbox. Eventually, he too would join the procession, with Jay in tow. For
now, he turned right and stepped through the wide double doors into the salon.
The area set aside
for himself and young Mr. Kress showed Emma’s unmistakable influence. Tucked
into the farthest corner of the room, a three-panel screen of wood and fabric
created a private dining nook. Best pray the younger man didn’t recognize the
scenes depicted, though the intent shouted for all and sundry to pay heed.
A pair of
yellow-ribboned women cast admiring glances his way. Muting his growl, he
stepped past them with a curt headshake. Won’t
interfere, my ass.
A paean to Greek
mythology and literature graced each panel. Achilles and Patroclus circled each
other with shields and spears, their sandaled feet the only flesh not on view.
Apollo strummed his lyre while a boy—Hyacinth, given the field of flowers—lay at
his feet. Beautiful Ganymede proffered a cup beneath the sheltering wings of
Stalking across
the room, he considered the ready excuses sure to be on Emma’s lips. A shield
to keep the boy from prying eyes, lest his table manners prove less than
impeccable. Hadn’t he himself insisted on protecting Jay from possible
criticism? No, of course the scenes hadn’t been deliberate. Convenience had
dictated the choice. In no way had she meant to imply Jay Kress was his eromenos.

Despite Emma’s
claim, his student wore a suit as well as he wore leather shorts. Temptation
beat at him, an unrelenting pressure, the image of his submissive on his knees
with the same earnest delight on his face.
He forced himself
to turn and deposit the bag on the table. Slow and easy.
“You’ve set a
lovely table.” He told himself navy wasn’t Jay’s color, despite the good sense
he’d shown to pair his suit with a solid white shirt and a pale blue tie with a
diagonal thin-stripe in white. “I trust your wait has been a pleasant one?”
“Yes, Master
Henry.” Jay stood straight and tall, a slender vision of grace. “Mistress Emma
showed me what to do.”
“It’s just Emma,
my boy. No title. She’s a submissive here, as you are.” He unpacked the tote.
Salads first, the light containers atop the others.
“But she’s in
charge of things.” Jay tilted his head. He started to roll his shoulders before
stopping himself.
Warm foil

submissive with more care. “Yes, she handles some functions at the club.” The
neat half-Windsor had to be Emma’s doing. “She also submits to her husband.”
Likewise, the white rose boutonniere pinned with Jay’s red ribbon, the symbol
of his ownership. The younger man’s purity and innocence bound under his protection
and control.
Pinned. Of course.
“Tell me, how many
pins did it take until Emma was satisfied with the drape of your jacket?”
“I’m not sure,
Master Henry.” Jay half-smiled, his eyes shining. “She made me stand still for
a long time, though. Do you like it?”

Jay caught his
breath and rocked his hips.
“Quite handsome,”
he murmured. Such promising responses his pupil gave, eager physicality
impossible to miss. “But you cannot relax, can you? Afraid you’ll disrupt her
handiwork if you so much as breathe too deeply.”
“I don’t mind,
Master Henry.” If you like it, he
didn’t say, though the worship in his gaze made the words unnecessary.
Humming, he traced
the edge of the lapel downward and unfastened the button holding the jacket
closed. “I mind.” Hanging the jacket on the chair back wouldn’t do any harm.
“Your comfort is my responsibility during our time together.”
He pushed the coat
from the boy’s shoulders. He’d remove his own to ensure his dinner partner felt
no awkwardness.
“No, no, please.”
Jay clutched at the fabric, fighting the motion, his voice rising. “Master
Henry, please.”

Henry kissed him.
He knew the
instant their lips touched he ought not have done it.
Soft and pliant,
the younger man opened his mouth with a throaty little whimper.

Irresistible. A
possessive haze descended, snarling heat pushing out from his center. He ground
his cock against his submissive and claimed his mouth.
