INTERVIEW

Hi Susan, Thanks for joining us today and congratulations on the release of Sight and Sinners, the second book in your Men of London series. I’ve had the pleasure of reading the book and loved it!

I’d love to know a little more about your writing process and habits so I hope you don’t mind answering some questions.

Do you find it more challenging to write the first book in a series or to write the subsequent novels?

Susan: It’s a challenge to write a series and something I’ve had to spend a little time getting my head around. When you write a standalone novel, it’s just the main MC’s and the support characters. In a series, you need to introduce the next characters, give them enough believability in the preceding book without giving away too much detail, and do a lot of foreshadowing to create an interest in them. You also have to remember what you said, what they looked like, how old they were, what their situation was etc so you can follow it through. It’s fun but as I said, challenging.

On a typical day, how much time would you spend writing? What are you doing the rest of the time?

Susan: I used to spend close to four-five hours writing , then another two or three doing promotional work, writing blog posts and generally getting the word out about my books. Now I’ve slowed down, I’m not sure why. It’s as if the initial creative spurt I had writing close to ten full length books in the space of 18 months has come to an end and I’m now in slow motion. It frustrates the crap out of me, to be honest. I want those days back, when I could sit down and write for hours even while holding down a day job. I honestly don’t know why my writing has slowed down. I guess life has gotten more in the way than I thought.

Describe your writing environment.

Susan – I’m incredibly fortunate to be able to write anywhere. The last twelve books were all written in my old home in Bocking, you can see my writing space in the picture. Now I write at my dining room table, or at work in my lunch time when I’m at my desk. I enjoy the noise around me, and am not fond of locking myself away in a study on my own to write. I wear my earphones, switch on the music and simply ignore everyone. They know not to bug me when I’m writing. My daughter tells everyone ‘not to poke the bear in the cave’ for fear of having limbs torn off.

Susan's Writing Environment

Draven or Taylor? Does one of these men hold a special place in your heart?

Susan – Draven is probably one I identify with the most in this story. He has a situation in his life with his little brother Jude, similar to one I had with my younger sister, Carol. She was in hospital for a long time, wasting away.  She was an alcoholic, determined to end her life and there was nothing we could do to save her. She was simply made comfortable in hospital during her last few months and then slipped away one day. I can totally empathise with Draven and the choices he faced in the end.

What else can we expect from the Men or London series? Are there any secrets you can share with your readers?

Susan – Oooh, well, let’s see. You are already personally privy to the next book in the series, which is Leslie’s story and how he meets Oliver Brown aka Nicky Starr, retired porn actor 🙂 You share a name.. I think you might be pleasantly surprised at what’s in store with Nicky.

Without giving away too much, also getting their own stories is Clay, who you’ll meet in Sight and Sinners, a cross dresser called Laverne (real name Lenny ,who you’ll be introduced to in Leslie’s story) , and the high flying Maxwell, air steward extraordinaire. He and Oliver are occasional f*** buddies so they have a bit of a history…

I’m honoured to have my name appear in one of your books. Thank you. ❤

What book is currently on your bedside table?

Susan – Currently it would be a huge tome called ‘Spangle’ by Gary Jennings. It’s a sweeping epic of life in a circus, not an M/M romance or any sort of romance, just a historical saga. I read it in between my M/M reads, absorbing the wonderfully atmospheric story little by little. There’s a reason I’m reading it; it’s all to do with another book I’m plotting.

THE MEN OF LONDON
From Charing Cross to Waterloo, there’s no escaping love.

SEEING THROUGH…

28-year-old Draven Samuels has a tragic past, but as an investigator with a high-profile London company he now gets what he wants. Tough, sarcastic, and sceptical, he has no patience for lies and even less for people who waste his time. Even if they’re as beautiful as the wild and dark-haired Taylor Abelard. Especially when they’re talking over the body of a murder victim.

THE DARKNESS

Psychic Taylor Abelard is used to people calling him a freak. He can see past events and feel the ghostly vibrations of people close to him who’ve passed on. It’s why he doesn’t get too close to the living. But this time, against his better judgment, despite Draven’s mocking rejoinders, Taylor will get closer than ever before. The mystery surrounding a dead friend will lead the two men down a dark and seedy trail of blackmail and lies. Add in the heartbreak of a family tragedy, and events lead them straight into each other’s arms. By the end of this night, all their demons will have risen—and been banished with the dawn.

Excerpt

The man Taylor was blowing definitely didn’t know how the hell to keep quiet. Taylor’s lips were wrapped around his dick, while above him a man stood, panting and moaning, turning the air blue with his curses. Taylor stopped what he was doing, causing the blowjob recipient to groan in dismay, and glared at the sweaty face above him.

“For Christ’s sake, Georgie, can you stop it with the fucking porn noises?” He glanced around him nervously. “This is where I work, damn it, and if anyone hears you they’ll come outside to see what all the fuss is about.”

Georgie’s wide eyes cast a quick glance around the deserted alleyway behind ‘Music Mayhem’ where Taylor was employed, then looked down at Taylor kneeling between his legs.

“Sorry, mate, it’s just that you’re so damn good at this and it’s been a while.”

About the author

Susan Mac Nicol is a self confessed bookaholic, an avid watcher of videos of sexy pole dancing men, self confessed geek and nerd and in love with her Smartphone. This little treasure is called ‘the boyfriend’ by her long suffering husband, who says if it vibrated, there’d be no need for him. Susan hasn’t had the heart to tell him there’s an app for that…

She is never happier than when sitting in the confines of her living room/study/on a cold station platform scribbling down words and making two men fall in love. She is a romantic at heart and believes that everything happens (for the most part) for a reason.  She likes to think of herself as a ‘half full’ kinda gal, although sometimes that philosophy is sorely tested.

Lover of walks in the forest, theatre productions, dabbling her toes in the cold North Sea and the vibrant city of London where you can experience all four seasons in a day , she is a hater of pantomime (so please don’t tar and feather her), duplicitous people, bigotry and self righteous idiots.

In an ideal world, Susan Mac Nicol would be Queen of England and banish all the bad people to the Never Never Lands of Wherever -Who Cares. As that’s never going to happen, she contents herself with writing her HEA stories and pretending, that just for a little while, good things happen to good people.
