The world we know is gone, destroyed by greed and ignorance. On a post-apocalyptic Earth, centuries into the future, few have survived the Great War. Some have taken refuge deep inside a mountain. One of them, Willem, is exiled to the surface… Alone and struggling to survive, Willem embarks on an epic journey, making a discovery that could once again alter the future of humanity. Willem of the Tafel is an epic tale of survival, second chances, hope and undying love.

Guest Post

Power corrupts, absolute power…

One of the main topics of Willem of the Tafel is power. Mavuto, the leader of the Tafel is obsessed with power, and we all know what absolute power does to us. I’ve always wondered why that is so, what makes people value their own power so highly that they are willing to go to such great lengths. I’m not the first to be occupied with this topic, of course, and it is undoubtedly an interesting one.

Table_Mountain-003 (2)Willem, on the other hand, has power thrust at him against his will. He doesn’t seek it, he doesn’t want it, but has no choice. I use an analogy to the South Africa of our time and the rainbow nation’s first president, Nelson Mandela. He left the presidency after just one term, never having sought it, valuing the time he had left on this planet so much that he wanted to spend it on things that really matter: family, his wife.

His successors are bound by the constitution which limits their terms to two, but we can see how some presidents don’t care about even constitutions, e.g. in Burundi, where hundreds of people die, fighting to uphold the constitution against a president seeking a third term in office. FIFA and Mr. Blatter is another good example. A really old man who believes that the world cannot spin without him at the helm. What makes people believe that? Megalomania? The president of Zimbabwe is another example, and I could go on and on.

In the novel, we see how humanity has learned to deal with the challenge of power in different ways. The Tafel society almost crumbles under their corrupt leader, while the societies above the surface have adopted a model with very weak states. I provide no answers, because I don’t have any, but it is certainly worth contemplating, even within the covers of a love story.

author-hans-hirschi

Hans M Hirschi (b. 1967) has been writing stories ever since he was a child. Adulthood and the demands of corporate life efficiently put an end to his fictional writing for over twenty years.
A global executive in training and channel development, Hans has traveled the world and had previously published non-fictional titles.

The birth of his son and the subsequent parental leave provided him with the opportunity to unleash his creative writing once again. With little influence over his brain’s creative workings, he indulges it, going with the flow.

A deeply rooted passion for, faith in a better world, in love, tolerance and diversity are a red thread throughout both his creative and non-fictional work. His novels might best be described as “literary romance, engaging characters and relevant stories that won’t leave you untouched, but hopeful.”

Hans is a proud member of the Swedish Writers’ Union and the Writers’ Center in Sweden.

These twelve stories range from first-time parents, to a couple still trying to conceive, to a ready-made family hoping to make it official, to parents just trying to get from one day to the next.

But it can’t all be about the kids. Especially when the kid to parent ratio favors the kids. You might have sneak out of your own house. Or remind your spouse what grown-ups can do when the kids are away.

From veteran and new authors, these families contain several m/m couples, an F/F couple, and an asexual mom who has some explaining to do to her genderfluid teen.

Excerpt:

Excerpt from First Day of School, by Sean Michael

Lizzie stared at Hutch with huge, tear-filled eyes. “Please. Please, Hut. Don’t make me go away. I’ll be the best cooker ever. I promise.”

God, she was breaking his heart. Hutch managed to find a warm smile for her, though, as he crouched to give her a hug. “You’ll be home by three thirty. And I bet you find you like school. There’s so many fun things to do.” He’d known it would be hard to send the twins off to school every day, leaving the house empty until afternoon, but he hadn’t expected it to be this hard.

She shook her head, the tears beginning to fall. Felicia was desperate to be big, to go to school like Darla, but this one had been opposed to the whole idea and finding out she wasn’t in the same Kindergarten class as her twin hadn’t helped. The school claimed they split twins up to let them develop their own individuality.

Well, Hutch knew damn well his girls were plenty individual, each with their own unique personality despite being together since birth.

“When you get home you can help me make supper,” he promised. “That won’t change just because you’re going to school.”

“Please? You can tell Addie-Lou it’s okay. I know you can,” she insisted.

“No, little. He can’t.” Adam shook his head. “School is important.”

“Is not!” She stamped her little foot, glaring at Adam. “I want to stay with Hut!”

“Okay, Lizzie, that’s enough.” Hutch gave her his most firm voice. “School is important and you’re going to make friends and find really fun things to do. Addie-Lou and I will be here when you get home.”

He wanted so badly to tell her she could stay home, but he knew she needed to do this. It was his job to make sure she didn’t need him and Adam anymore and this was how it started. Even if it was the hardest thing ever.

My Cowboy Promises

(The Cowboys Series, Book #4)

By Z.A. Maxfield

Blurb:

A real man needs a real love…

To become the man he’s meant to be, one cowboy will have to be the man he never wanted anyone to know he was…

Ryder Dent is a true-blue cowboy. A devoted son, husband and father, but one who is living a costly lie. When they were both young, Ryder and his closest female friend Andy thought they’d found the perfect solution to both their problems—she was single and pregnant, and he was secretly gay—so they got married and raised Jonas together.

When Ryder gets hurt at a party, his son’s new pediatrician comes to the rescue. The connection between Ryder and Dr. Declan Winters is sudden, powerful, and undeniable. Ryder loves Andy and the family they’ve created together—but they both need more. Can they pursue their hearts’ desire without destroying the life they’ve built and losing the son they love?

Excerpt
The hottest guy I ever saw was playing “Pop Goes the Weasel” on the piano while fifteen cagey preschoolers circled fourteen chairs. My father-in-law’s annual
Fourth of July shindig—the biggest event of the year—was a family picnic. We’d
set aside a play area for the littlest kids and I’d volunteered to supervise, but the piano man blindsided me and I nearly missed an outrageous hair- pulling
incident.
Like a too bright pair of headlights on a moonless night, he was all I could see.
Mayor Calder Hamilton—a cartoon bear of a man with a white handlebar mustache—snuck up on me with one of those painful backslapping man hugs.
“Ryder Dent, you son of a bitch. Which one is your boy?”
“That’s Jonas.” I pointed out my son. “Blue plaid shirt, cowboy hat. Crass determination to win?”
“I know that look, I see it every day when I look in the mirror. But how can that
be him? Last time I saw him he was half that size.”
Why do people always say that? Is it some rite of passage? Am I going to be
surprised kids grow someday too? “We had to buy him a new pair of cowboy boots
just last week.”
“He’s a fine-looking boy. Where’s Andrea?”
“She doesn’t come to these things to hang around with me.” I glanced toward the windows. “You’ll find her wherever there’s dancing.”
“She leaves you in charge of Jonas?”
“Gosh, yeah. Andi’s the social one. She likes to kick up her heels and I don’t mind if she wants to have some fun.”
“So have you met our new doctor yet? Isn’t he something? I have never seen anyone play piano like that.”
That’s Doctor Winters?” The doc had started playing “Pop Goes the
Weasel” like a Russian folk dance, all the while yelling Hai! Hai,! Hai! Hai! The music stopped and the chaos started. Jonas ended up on another chair.
“Go, Team Jonas!” I pumped my fist like a goofball.
“Yeah. Go, boy, go!” Hamilton was already tipsy enough to be unaware he was shouting right in my ear. It didn’t matter; I was going deaf from all the kids squealing anyway. “I’d like to ask your help with something.”
“Sure thing, Mayor. Shoot.”
“I need you and your family in a campaign ad”
“My family?” Good grief. Bitterroot’s founding fathers would shit in their graves at such an idea. “I don’t think we’d make a very good ad.”
“C’mon.” He punched my arm. “You and Andrea are both attractive. Jonas is a cute kid. You had to make some tough choices in the beginning, but look where you are now.”
“Uh. . . I don’t think—”
“I need a family exactly like yours to represent my campaign to the twenty-somethings. I need them to believe they’re important to me.”
Me and Andi? My stomach did a full 360, front to back, as if I was on a Six Flags ride. Mayor Hamilton wanted some picture-frame perfect family, and we were not it. Plus, we hadn’t exactly voted for him. “I’ll ask Andi about it, but—”
“Andrea’s dad just told me he’s backing me all the way again this next election.”
“Is he?” That figures. Her dad likes politicians to owe him.

“So you just tell her you’re doing it, okay?”
“Sure, I’ll mention it, but—”
Hamilton’s wife, Sally, came up to collect him. “C’mon Cowboy. There’s someone I want you to meet.”
She grabbed his hand and, after a good-natured tug-of-war, they left together. I
breathed again. Andi’s dad ran one of the most successful ranches in the area.
If he wanted to see my family on a billboard, I’d have to figure a way to get out of it or learn to say “cheese.”
It was pretty hard to say no to Sterling Chandler. I’m not sure he understood the word.
Shit.
The new doc managed to make “Pop Goes the Weasel” sound like a funeral dirge and the children all lurched around like little zombies. Then he turned it into a
raucous honkytonk song.
Who was this guy?
Jonas got eliminated fourth from last but he wasn’t crushed by the loss. His
attention shifted right away to the buffet, where the cater-waiters had installed several trays of Texas-sized cookies, all colored with red, white, and blue sugar crystals in honor of the holiday.
Musical Chairs, the Survivor edition, came down to two particularly crafty-looking femme fatales. One wore a jeans skirt, cowboy boots, and a pretty white blouse, and the other had on a daisy-printed sundress with lacy socks and jelly shoes.
Lacy socks girl won by body-checking white blouse girl out of the way and pouncing on the last chair. She gripped the seat so tight with both hands no one could get her off it.
The new doc consoled the runner-up with a box of big-block Legos and gave the
winner a play set with pink and purple Ponies but it seemed she thought she was
getting the chair as her prize. Eventually her mom pried her up and they all
wandered off to join the party outside.
Doc Winters was left to tidy up. I figured I ought to help, being family and all.
Plus, it might get me out of small talk outside.
But the doc was the best looking man I had ever seen up close. I was bound to mess up and say something super stupid, and Andi was going to hear about it, and
then she was going to tease me for the rest of my life, because she was just waiting for me to lose my shit over some guy.
And Doc Winters, M.D., The Yankee Doodler?
He could be the guy.

Charcter Bio – Ryder Dent

Ryder Dent is a naïve twenty-three-year-old boy with a wife, Andi and a son, Jonas. He married Andi when he was still in high school after her secret love affair with a famous bull rider—a man with a taste for too-young girls—resulted in pregnancy and the man wanted nothing more to do with her. Ryder comes to her rescue, marrying her and raising the child as his own. Most people in town believe there’s more to the story, but nobody is sure.

Their pact worked fine when they were kids. It was the perfect opportunity for him to be part of a family. Further, by marrying Andi he could hide his homosexuality from a gossipy town and his hard-to-please father. Andi and Ryder are solid friends. They keep each other’s secrets. They believe in each other. They have overcome obstacles people older and more mature might struggle with.

But Ryder has a lot to think about. What seemed like an easy decision five years before grows more difficult as time passes. He loves Andi and his son more than ever, but his body is fully mature and now, he yearns for more. The arrival of the new town Doctor who is hot, out and proud, and wants him, really shakes Ryder’s faith in himself.

Ryder is shaken and conflicted. He’s still young enough to be unsure about a lot of things. But there are three things he believes:

  1. A good man tells the truth.
  2. A good man puts his child first.
  3. A good man keeps his promises.

He also believes—despite all evidence to the contrary—if he holds fast to the vision of the man he wants to be, he can do all three of those things, and come out a winner.

About the Author
Z. A. Maxfield started writing in 2007 on a dare from her children and never looked back.  Pathologically disorganized, and perennially optimistic, she writes as much as she can, reads as much as she dares, and enjoys her time with family and friends. Three things reverberate throughout all her stories: Unconditional love, redemption, and the belief that miracles happen when we least expect them.
If anyone asks her how a wife and mother of four can find time for a writing career, she’ll answer, “It’s amazing what you can accomplish if you give up housework.”

RELEASE DAY! Charlie’s Hero by Nic Starr

Today I have a great excuse to stop by the Two Men blog – my first novel length story releases today!

I am so excited to see Charlie’s Hero finally come to life, and to bring you the story of Charlie and Josh, two characters who hold a special place in my heart. And because it’s my first book being released in paperback, I’ve arranged a blog tour. I do hope you get a chance to follow the tour. There’ll be guest posts, character bios, exclusive excerpts, a couple of interviews and a giveaway of an Amazon Gift Card.

CharliesHero_postcard_front_DSP

Here’s a bit about the book.

Schoolteacher Charlie Matthews returns to his hometown, looking to regain a sense of community, reconnect with friends, and settle down. It looks like his dreams have come true when paramedic Josh Campbell attends an accident at the school. It’s love at first sight, and a romance begins.

But Josh’s reluctance to come out to the brother who raised him, puts pressure on their fledgling relationship. While Charlie understands Josh’s concerns, he can’t help growing impatient. After all, Charlie came out years ago.

It’s not until Charlie confronts his own parents and realizes he hasn’t come to terms with their rejection that he fully understands what Josh has to lose. But Josh is Charlie’s hero, and Josh will do anything to prove to Charlie that to be part of a family, he doesn’t need his parents.

I do hope you enjoy the story and the tour.

Happy reading,

Nic xx

Parker Williams is celebrating the release of Scent of the Heart, the second book in the Shifting Needs series.

Scent of the Heart

by Parker Williams

Shifting Needs book #2

Cover: Laura Harner

Blurb

Casey Scott grew up being told he’d never amount to anything, and despite the unwavering love and support from his best friend, Jake, the idea sticks in the back of Casey’s mind. When he discovers he has a unique destiny in an enclave where shifters and humans live together, he seizes the chance, wanting for once in his life to be someone special.

Tsvetok Yerokhin lost his parents to the evil ruler of the enclave when he was a boy. The responsibilities of raising his two younger brothers nearly overwhelmed him and self-doubt took over. When the new Alpha and his Protector arrive in time to save his life, Sev is grateful, but he’s even more shocked when he scents his mate with them.

Casey isn’t prepared for the feelings that sweep over him when he meets Sev, but he refuses to act on them because he’s straight. Still, there is something so alluring about Sev that Casey can’t help being drawn to him.

As the two explore the edges of their new discovery, an evil returns, determined to control the enclave or destroy it. The Alpha and Protector are powerless to stop it, but Casey holds the key to victory. If he can discover what it is, he has a chance to save them all. To be the hero.

Unfortunately, the hero has to be willing to make the ultimate sacrifice, and for Casey that means losing his heart.

Interview

Thanks for joining us today, Parker. Congratulations on our new release.  We are also happy to have the opportunity to ask you some questions. Hope you don’t mind us prying a little into your writing and your life.

Obviously this is book #2 in a series so the world for your paranormal story had already been established, but can you tell us a little about how you come up with the concept for and build your world?

Parker: I love shifter stories. They’re my favorite of every genre I read, and I’ve always wanted to try one, but I hoped to make mine a little different. In this world, the Alpha isn’t a shifter, but human. It’s believed that a human is the only one who can be impartial when it comes to making laws for the various shifter types that live in the enclave.

Is it easier to write a paranormal or write a contemporary story? Do you have a favourite between the two genres?

Parker: I don’t think either is all that difficult, but they’re both challenging in their own way. Contemporary stories still need a hook that will grab people, but I think with paranormal it’s easier to catch their attention, but they’ve got to be open to new types of stories.

When you’re not writing, promoting your work, or promoting the work of others, what do you like to do? To be honest, I’m not sure where you’d even find time to fit much else in but thought I’d ask anyway. 🙂

Parker: I love to read. I use the stories of others as my downtime. Escaping into the world of Ryan and Cliff (Cliff’s Edge by Laura Harner), or Coming Clean (by Silvia Violet), allows me to step out of my head for a while, and gives me time to center myself again.

What’s on the menu for dinner tonight? What would you rather be eating?

Parker: I’d kill for Paul to make a potpie. We’re vegan, and he makes this one with a gravy recipe we found, and a lot of vegetables. It’s so damn good.

Yum! I love a good potpie too!

What book is currently on the bedside table?

Parker: I have a whole iPad full of books. Right now I’m stepping into the world of Eden Winters ‘Diversion’. She’s releasing the series with new covers and getting ready for the next book (which I got to beta read!)

Share with us one secret or snippet from Scent of the Heart, that isn’t from the blurb or excerpt.

Parker: Okay. 🙂

Mikhail seemed to be weighing his words. “My parents told me that I would always live in the enclave. Sometimes I wish I could talk to them now, so I could see if they still think that’s the path for me.”

“I can help with that,” Casey told him. “Sit down here.”

He pointed to the stump of a fallen tree. Mikhail sat, eyes wide. He looked up as Casey splayed his fingers and put them on Mikhail’s cheek. Warm skin grew hot as Casey slipped into a trance, calling to the boy’s parents. A darkness descended, the likes of which Casey had never seen. It had form and substance. It swept over him as he thrashed, trying to clear it. He could hear the mocking laughter as it swirled around his body, entering his pores. It choked him, bitter and harsh, as his world went cold.

Then he screamed.

Thanks for that little treat. 🙂

Excerpt

“This night is shot,” Casey mumbled. “Hakii, if you’re there, I’m sorry. I need to find him. I’ll try to be back as soon as I can. Oh, and if you’re not there, I hope you’re getting a damn good laugh at me talking to myself.”

The night air had chilled considerably. Casey threw on a sweater and hurried to the Alpha’s house. Before he could pound on the door, it swung open. Jake stood there wearing nothing at all.

“Oh god, my eyes.”

Jake sighed. “You’ve seen me before. A lot, if I recall correctly.”

“And every time I do, I remember that I need to create eye bleach.”

Jake faked a laugh. “Yeah, you’re hilarious. What do you want?”

“A guy came to my house tonight. His name is Sev, and I think he’s in trouble.”

All humor fled from Jake’s face. “What happened?”

Casey told him about the visit. “He…called me his mate. What the hell is that about?”

“Later. We’ve got to find him.”

In an instant, Jake transformed into a beautiful black jaguar. Zak came rushing to the door. “What is wrong?”

Before Casey could answer, Zak grabbed a heavy coat and squirmed into it. “Jake will track him. You will come with us.”

“Zak, he called me his mate. Why would he do that?”

“You worry about this now? I do not see where this matters. If you prefer, you may stay behind.”

Casey sobered immediately. “No, you’re right. I’m sorry.”

They tracked Jake as he hurried to the woods. When they heard him roar, Zak and Casey ran to the edge of the forest. Jake had transformed back to his human form and, man, was he pissed.

“Come out here, now,” he demanded.

There was no movement, but Casey heard a clicking noise, followed by the familiar stamping of feet.

“You spray me and I swear to the gods I will neuter you. Put your damn tail down and face us as a man, Sev.”

About The Trevor Project

Founded in 1998 by the creators of the Academy Award®-winning short film TREVOR, The Trevor Project is the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) young people ages 13-24.

The life-saving, life-affirming work of The Trevor Project springs from the powerful intersection of storytelling on stage and film.

In 1994, producers Randy Stone and Peggy Rajski saw writer/performer James Lecesne bring to life Trevor, a character he created as part of his award-winning one-man show WORD OF MOUTH.  Convinced Trevor’s story would make a wonderful short film, Stone and Rajski invited Lecesne to adapt it into a screenplay.  Rajski directed the movie and TREVOR went on to win many prestigious awards including the Academy Award® for Best Live Action Short Film.

The Oscar-winning film eventually launched a national movement. When producer Randy Stone secured an airing on HBO with Ellen DeGeneres hosting, director/producer Peggy Rajski discovered there was no real place for young people like Trevor to turn when facing challenges similar to his. She quickly recruited mental health experts and figured out how to build the infrastructure necessary for a nationwide 24-hour crisis line, and writer James Lecesne secured the funds to start it. On the night their funny and moving coming-of-age story premiered on HBO in 1998, these visionary filmmakers launched the Trevor Lifeline, the first national crisis intervention and suicide prevention lifeline for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth.

Since then, hundreds of thousands of young people in crisis have reached out to The Trevor Project’s multiple in-person and online life-saving, life-affirming resources–Trevor Lifeline, TrevorChat, TrevorSpace and Trevor Education Workshops.

The Trevor Project is the premier organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBTQ teens and young adults.

Excerpt from What the Heart Wants by D.C. Williams

The bus pulled into the Port Authority and Will grabbed his backpack and headed downstairs to the street. He wasn’t exactly familiar with New York, other than a couple of school trips and a few visits to Rockefeller Center and Radio City at Christmastime, but it was pretty easy to get himself pointed downtown. He stopped at a McDonalds to use the bathroom, which took half an hour because the line was so long, and bought himself an ice-cream.

It was easy to tell he was approaching the parade route. Lots of rainbow stuff, big groups of people having a good time. No-one was looking at him. Why would they? Nothing to see here. Just another skinny kid in jeans and a blue t-shirt.

The crowd had people of every description. Lots of them didn’t look “gay.” Probably some of them weren’t. Will knew the parade was a big deal, and plenty of people came to New York this weekend just to see it. Once he got to Fifth, the street was heavily lined with spectators. There was still close to an hour to go, but the place was packed.

Crap, he should have started earlier. Will tried to edge out of the stream of foot traffic , figuring if he moved around a little he could find a spot where he could at least sort of see without jostling anyone. Even if he wished someone would jostle him. Some of these guys were hot. And he could look. No-one would be freaked out that he was checking out the scenery.

Someone touched his arm lightly. An older man was smiling at him. Damn, the guy was smoking. He had to be at least Will’s dad’s age, but Oh fuck, yeah. Big guy, in great shape with biceps Will bet he couldn’t wrap both hands around. Defined chest, even though his shirt wasn’t that tight. Clean shaven, short gray buzz-cut, sexy crinkles in a tanned face around deep set blue eyes. “By yourself, kid?”

“Yeah,” Will nodded.

“We got room for a skinny one up here. Jase, we have company.”

About the authors

Jamie Lynn Miller has been writing fiction since childhood and decided to take the plunge and go pro in 2008, finding to her amazement that people truly enjoyed her love stories. She’s a romantic at heart, and her tales reflect the desire we all have to find “the one,” persevering through trials and heartache for that happy ending.

Jamie has a degree in fine arts and has spent the last twenty years working as a graphic designer, though she’d much rather be writing. She was born in Chicago and still lives there today with her husband and their two furry, four-footed children, er… cats.

If she’s not brainstorming story ideas, you can find Jamie at a sci-fi convention, in front of a furnace doing glass blowing, or on a mat twisted into a yoga pose.

T.K. Paige picked up her first book to read around the age of four and hasn’t stopped since. She discovered the M/M genre in August of 2012 and an addict was hooked.

If you see her and she is not reading, then she is thinking about the books that live in her head. It doesn’t matter what else she is doing, it is guaranteed half her brain has a plot running through it.

A stay at home mom for more years than she would like to think about, she is lucky enough to be married to a wonderful guy who encouraged her to write throughout their years together.

Then when she finally did it and she told him what she was writing, he turned only slightly green and asked “Do I have to read it?” Apparently, he had dreams of her being the next Urban Fantasy sensation with her taste in movies.

LeAnne Phoenix would tell you that the worst time of her life was the two years that she attempted to take off from writing. If you asked her to explain exactly why she did such a thing, you would most likely get the mad attempt to arch an eyebrow like her dad and then a shake of the head as she told you it was unlucky to speak of such things. Suffice it to say, it will never happen again!

sed in Fort Worth, Texas in the mid-1970’s, Ms. Phoenix was young and wild (and even free!) during the crazy wondrous decade known as the 1980’s and the even crazier but now grungy decade of the 1990’s. Music is second only to the muses that live and breathe to fill her mind with beautiful men, and music always helps them to tell their stories. She is never without her iPod or her computer no matter where she goes, although, she does like to hike and take pictures of the sky and the moon, and even the occasional shot of the sun through the branches of a tree.

An avid cat lover, Ms. Phoenix has been owned by many throughout her life, though her current owner is one Lily-Rose, who really would like for her to step away from the keyboard and pay her some attention! After all, hasn’t she earned it?

Carly Rose was named after her grandmother, an accomplished poet, and a character her mom met in a romance novel while awaiting her birth, I guess you could say that writing has always been in her blood.

As a child her parents used to threaten to take away her books and make her play outside when she wasn’t getting her chores done. Now she’s all grown up and her roles as wife, mother of two, and part-time nurse keep her hopping. As a blogger, book reviewer, freelance editor, and author, she still manage to spend time each day with her nose in a book.

She’s a student of life who’s always looking for new opportunities to learn and discovered early on that the love of family, friends and a positive attitude are all you really need. A free spirited motorcycle enthusiast who loves butterflies, dancing in the rain, and believes that everything is better in purple, she love to hear from readers so stop by and say “hi” anytime!

A NEW GAY MYSTERY SERIES IN THE WACKY WORLD OF ACADEMIA

by Joe Cosentino

I’ve been a college theatre professor for over twenty years and a department head for ten years. Though I love my job, it requires an enormous amount of creativity, energy, and diplomacy. I have also met the most amazing students, faculty colleagues, staff, and administrators. It occurred to me one day that a college campus with its numerous buildings, around the clock access, and diverse personalities is the perfect place for a mystery series.

Mystery novels have always been my favorites, in particular those in a series that includes humor and romance. However, I was unable to find many gay mystery series along that line. So I decided to create my own. Since the mysteries I like are of the cozy variety, I set my series in the quaint, fictitious, New England college town of Treemeadow, named after its original founders, gay couple Tree and Meadow. Edwardian buildings, stone fireplaces, and hot chocolate are in abundance. At the center of the series is Nicky Abbondanza, Professor of Directing, and Noah Oliver, Professor of Acting. It’s up to Nicky and Noah to use their theatrical skills like role play to figure out whodunit and why. Complicating matters is the fact that in book one Noah is the top suspect. As Nicky and Noah embark on one hysterically funny escapade after the next, they fall in love with each other, and hopefully the readers fall in love with them.

In Drama Queen, Nicky and Noah have to uncover why college theatre professors are dropping like stage curtains while Nicky directs the college play production—a murder mystery. In Drama Muscle, Nicky and Noah have to find out why musclemen are dropping like weights in the Physical Education department while Nicky directs the Student Bodybuilding Competition. In Drama Cruise, Nicky and Noah go on a cruise to Alaska, and discover why college theatre professors are going overboard like lifeboats while Nicky directs a murder mystery dinner theatre show onboard ship.

I enjoy mysteries with strong clues, enticing red herrings, plot twists and turns, reversals, and a shocking yet earned and satisfying ending. The characters I enjoy are larger than life, witty, and loveable with healthy sex lives. Plots need to move quickly, and the unexpected is always welcome. So my mystery series incorporates all of those things.

I hope everyone will welcome Nicky and Noah into their libraries and into their hearts. There’s nothing better than a good laugh, a tantalizing romance, and a clever mystery.

Excerpt

With the student actors and technicians sitting in the front of the theatre (obliviously texting on their phones), my student stage manager, SuCho, screamed for everyone’s attention, and for me to come to the front of the theatre house to give them my notes. This thankfully sent David off to his office in a huff.

After I had given my first few notes, I noticed Noah Oliver standing in the back of the theatre. Noah is tall and lean with curly blond hair, blue eyes, and the sweetest smile I have ever wanted to kiss in an Assistant Professor. While I teach Theatre History and Play Directing, Noah is our department’s specialist in Acting, and for good reason. Noah is a terrific actor, a creative and passionate teacher, and a wonderful colleague. More importantly, I have had a crush on him since the moment he made his entrance into our humble campus three years ago. Noah is single, gay, and seems to really like me. Why don’t I ask him out? Noah is twenty-eight years young. As a junior professor in my department in need of my vote for tenure this year, if I make a pass at him it could be considered attempted coercion on my part.

It was difficult for me to concentrate on giving my notes to the students since Scotty Bruno, my graduate assistant and Assistant Director of the play, was talking, laughing, and obviously flirting with Noah in the rear of the theatre. I had reason to be concerned. Scotty has bleached blond hair, contact lens turquoise eyes, ultra-white bonded teeth, and muscles as if sculpted by Michelangelo, housed in multi-colored, stuffed shorts and tank top (in winter) that were not unnoticed by Noah. Unless I was becoming nearsighted, I could have sworn that Scotty whispered something into Noah’s ear then handed Noah a box. What the heck is in it? Love letters? Condoms? My heart on a silver platter?

MeetTheAuthor
Best Selling Author Kindle Alexander is an innovative writer, and a genre-crosser who writes classic fantasy, romance, suspense, and erotica in both the male/male and male/female genres. It’s always a surprise to see what’s coming next!
I live in the suburbs of Dallas where it’s true, the only thing bigger than an over active imagination, may be women’s hair!
Usually, I try for funny. Humor is a major part of my life – I love to laugh, and it seems to be the thing I do in most situations – regardless of the situation, but jokes are a tricky deal… I don’t want to offend anyone and jokes tend to offend. So instead I’m going to tell you about Kindle.
I tragically lost my sixteen year old daughter to a drunk driver. She had just been at home, it was early in the night and I heard the accident happen. I’ll never forget that moment. The sirens were immediate and something inside me just knew. I left my house, drove straight to the accident on nothing more than instinct. I got to be there when my little girl died – weirdly, I consider that a true gift from above. She didn’t have to be alone.
That time in my life was terrible. It’s everything you think it would be times about a billion. I love that kid. I loved being her mother and I loved watching her grow into this incredibly beautiful person, both inside and out. She was such a gift to me. To have it all ripped away so suddenly broke me.
Her name was Kindle. Honest to goodness – it was her name and she died a few weeks before Amazon released their brand new Kindle ereader. She had no idea it was coming out and she would have finally gotten her name on something! Try finding a ruler with the name Kindle on it.. It never happened.
Through the course of that crippling event I was lucky enough to begin to write with a dear friend in the fan fiction world of Facebook. She got me through those dark days with her unwavering support and friendship. There wasn’t a time she wasn’t there for me. Sometimes together and sometimes by myself, we built a world where Kindle lives and stands for peace, love and harmony. It’s its own kind of support group. I know without question I wouldn’t be here today without her.

Excerpt

Six years, multiple private investigators, and they still had no leads. It was disheartening.

“Maybe. It’s something to think about. It’s been so long that she may have relaxed her guard enough for someone to get close to her.” Robert sighed. “I know finding the kids is your main priority, but I promised Marissa I’d talk to you.”

“About?” Phillip suspected he didn’t want to know where the conversation was headed.

“Phillip, it’s been six years. I know you want to find Jacob and Sam, but there’s no guarantee that’s ever going to happen. You need to start living again. It’s past time for you to start dating. Find someone to spend your life with.”

“I know,” Phillip answered. “I kept hoping, if I stayed alone, Janice would be forced to relent and bring the kids back. Wishful thinking on my part. She’d be stupid to come back, considering she’d be arrested. Now I don’t know where to start looking or even if I really want to.”

“What about the gym? You used to spend a lot of time there.”

“I quit going a long time ago.” Phillip still kept in shape. He just didn’t do it at the gym.

“Well, Marissa was telling me the other day about a new gym that opened up.”

“Even if I did go back to working out, I’d probably just go to the one that I used to use.”

“I think this one would be more up your alley.” Robert smirked. “Rumor has it the guy who runs it is gay, and so are most of his clientele. Where else would be better than a gay gym to meet someone?”

About the author

Renee Stevens first started writing in her teens but didn’t get serious about being an author until her mid-twenties.  Since then she’s written a number of contemporary stories, as well as delved into the paranormal.  When not writing, or spending time in the outdoors, Renee can usually be found working on GayAuthors.org in her capacity of admin and Anthology Coordinator.

Renee resides in Wyoming with her wonderfully supportive husband and a menagerie of four-legged critters.  Making the most of the nearly constant negative temperatures and mounds of snow, Renee spends much of the winter months in hibernation with her laptop, the voices in her head keeping her company while her husband works. When she needs a break from writing, Renee takes to the sewing machine to design, and make, beautiful quilts.

When the snow finally disappears, usually around May or June, Renee can be found in the great-outdoors.  She spends her time on the mountain, at the lake, and just anywhere that she can do some camping, take some photos, and ride the four-wheelers with her hubby.  Once back at home, it’s back to writing.

“Who pissed in your cheerios?” Hayden asks as he sets the glass in front of me.

“Who do you think?” Hayden has met Gary a few times and hates him more after each visit. I should listen to his advice more often.

“I don’t know what you see in that douche bag.” Hayden pulls a bowl of pretzels out from under the counter and grabs a few before setting it next to my beer. “You can do so much better.”

“Well, I think I’m gonna have to.” I take a drink before looking up at Hayden. “He might have broken up with me.”

“What does that mean?” Hayden nods to a waitress and fills two pints from the tap without taking his attention away from me. “Did he or didn’t he?”

“He told me to wait until he’s ready to come back.” I shrug and twist on the stool, hoping to see something to distract Hayden from this conversation with. There are only a few people sprinkled throughout the dark room. A couple guys in the back look familiar but their heads are down and turned away from me so I can’t tell if I know them.

“Hey.” Hayden flicks the back of my head. “You’re better off without him.”

“I know.” My brain knows it’s true but I hate being alone. I really hate it. I’ve been alone since I was sixteen and it hasn’t gotten any easier. “But he wants me to wait for him. So I can’t just move on or anything.”

“You can.” Hayden grabs my shoulder and twists me again so I’m facing him. “And you will. Just stay away from him. I’ve heard rumors about how he treats his exes and you don’t want any part of that.”

My blood runs cold at his words. I’ve heard similar warnings from people for the entire time we’ve been together. The few friends that knew I was seeing Gary were all worried about me. He has a reputation for getting too rough and driving his boyfriends away.

Literally.

One guy just up and left town without a word to anyone and the guy before me committed suicide. He was found in his bathtub a week after he and Gary broke up. At least that’s what I heard from some questionable sources.

“You’re right.” I stare down at my glass, swirling the foam at the bottom. “I should just forget about him and move on. And I’m going to start right now. Can you get me a double shot of Jack?”
