GUEST POST, EXCERPT & GIVEAWAY: Breaker by AF Henley & Kelly Wyre

exile-breaker-header

Welcome to the Breaker (Exile, Volume 1) Blog Tour and Giveaway! We’re both super excited about this new release and thrilled to be able to share it with you. Throughout this tour, we’re going to be introducing many of the characters within, and associated with, Exile’s bizarre shores, as well as introducing Exile itself. Then we’re going to top that off with a quick little teaser.

However, before we get into any of that we wanted to remind you that we’ve got a couple of awesome giveaways going along with the tour so be sure to read through to the end to find out how you could win either a Silver-plated Starfish Anklet (just by leaving a single comment!), or the grand prize of a signed, print copy of Breaker, a coordinates bracelet with the Believe. Seek. Prove. reminder so you can always find your way back to the island of Exile, and a $20 gift certificate to the Less Than Three Press book market.

The Character Discussion

Kelly Wyre: *sees the name of the character to talk about today* Oh Lord.

AF Henley: Ugh. Not this guy.

KW: Yeah. It’s this guy. This wonderful ray of sunshine and light. The one, the one… your favorite… Shin.

AFH: Why do I think there’s a reason his name is so close to a nasty four-lettered poop word?

KW: Because we like sophomoric symbolism? It’s also a great place to kick him when he gets pissy.

AFH: Wow. We are much smarter than I thought.

KW: Yes. We are. Totally. And yeah, Shin’s a brat. He just is. But every island needs an asshole.

AFH: I guess, to be well-rounded about the whole thing, he does have a teeny bit of weight on his shoulders.

KW: He is the head of Island Security. And we do find out later that he’s been around for a while.

AFH: SHHHHHH! No second-book spoilers!

KW: Oh! Right. Okay. We’ll stick to how much Shin sucks in THIS one, then.

The Teaser

“He’s mobile and frolicking in the fucking tulips with that idiot Lundrell when he should be doing what Estrangement intended and protecting this island.”

Kaeva’s blood boiled, and he’d had enough. He walked out of the brush and onto the path. Both radios screamed with feedback and then abruptly died. Shin took a defensive stance, and after a startled moment, Tayson—a large, fair man with skin perpetually healing itself from sunburn—did the same.

“State your purpose,” Shin barked.

“To tell elitist assholes to go fuck themselves,” Kaeva drawled, proud that he sounded far calmer than he felt. Rage licked at his insides.

“Stand down… Downs,” Tayson stammered.

“Or you’ll what?” Kaeva asked.

Tayson didn’t have a good answer to that. Neither did Shin, who was twitching as though connected to a live wire.

“I’ve been trying to tell Eddie that this place is different than the rest of the world, and here you two pricks are proving me wrong.”

“What you do with your charge is your business,” Shin replied.

“Yeah. It is. And if you’re running off good people because of your fucked up Patrol philosophy, then that’s Oberon’s business.”

Shin jerked like a puppet with a demented master. “Oberon and Lake are aware of why Rivet left.”

“Good, then you won’t mind if I go over it with them, just to be on the safe side.”

“Do what you want. Patrol is an intrinsic part of Exile’s structure. Unlike one worthless hunter who endangers us all by simply breathing.”

Kaeva knew better. He’d been provoked by far more skillful people than Shin. He didn’t intend to do anything more than take two menacing steps forward. And that was, actually, all he did.

His Estrangement did the rest.

exile-breaker-coverIn the wake of several near-cataclysmic events, humanity created the Cure, a DNA-altering antidote to death by disease and old age. But all cures come with side effects: a small percentage of the population develops a wide range of powers, some of which are lethal to others, and some which are lethal to the wielder.

These people are called the Estranged, hunted and shunned, safe only on the Island of Exile. It is here that Kaeva and Eddie meet—and where they set a prophecy in motion, quite possibly sealing their own demise, and even the end of Exile.

GUEST POST & GIVEAWAY: Wolf In League by AF Henley

wolf-in-league-bt-header

Today’s post brings us to the final one for the Wolf, in League blog tour and giveaway. I am very grateful to Because Two Men are Better than One for giving me this venue to celebrate with you all, and I hope you’ve enjoyed the tour. For those who are joining the tour for the first time, I am so happy that you caught up with us. Let me sum up what we’ve been doing…

Wolf in League is the third novel in the Wolf series, and to celebrate I’ve been running a “tiny teaser” blog tour highlighting moments and people in the novel. It’s been a lot of work, and a lot of fun, and I can only hope that I’ve managed to pass on even one-tenth of the excitement that I’ve been feeling over this novel for the last year or so. I have a little more than just excerpts for you, though.

In keeping with tradition for the Wolf series blog tours, there’s also giveaway. One winner, tour-wide, is going to walk away with a signed, print copy of Wolf in League, a “crystal and silver” diamante Howling Wolf Pendant, and a $20 gift certificate to the Less Than Three Press book market. That’s right, one winner takes the whole lot. Follow the post to the end to find out how to play along.

And now, the final teaser, and one last look at the new novel. If you enjoy it, please consider grabbing your own copy. I would absolutely love to hear what you think of the novel…

Tiny Teaser: Post 13

It took several seconds for Matthew’s thoughts to gather cohesion. He’d been dreaming, and it had been a very good dream indeed—a dream that was made up of snapshot images of tongues and fingers and slippery wet penises that came from everywhere, but at the same time, all belonged to Gavin. He knew that in the way a dream’s eye always knew what was familiar and what was not.

It had been a dream that was displaced and fragmented…  and that had somehow made it seem all the more erotic. All those parts of Gavin, multiplying, searching him out and filling him up in every way possible, drawing him in and wrapping around him at the very same time. It was not a dream where a mere demand to “wakey, wakey” would be enough to free him. Besides, it couldn’t be morning. Not yet.

He turned his head away, found that his face was still against Gavin’s shoulder, and buried himself into the hollow of Gavin’s neck, a spot that the blanket, and maybe even his own breath, had finally found a way to warm. He slid his hand across Gavin’s chest, tucked it under Gavin’s arm, and clenched Gavin closer. A light, pleased sigh was breathed into his hair.

“Yes, yes,” someone said. “Much adorable. Very sweet.”

It was a voice Matthew didn’t recognize at all. Whether Gavin caught that thought, had his own moment of realization, or merely noticed that Matthew was moving, both of them reacted in tandem.

Matthew sat up, staring wildly around the room. Gavin sat up behind him, cursed, and tried to catch Matthew’s waist before Matthew could rise. Matthew moved one iota faster than Gavin and stood, grasping pointlessly at the blanket that was already flumping to the floor.

A stranger! No… two. Not even two, but four!

The strangers were pale, so very, very pale that their skin glowed in the darkness. Matthew’s insides filled with horror. He didn’t need a name. One of them had to be Arius. Had to be.

Even so, he stuttered, “W-who are you? What do you want? Why are you here?”

The strangers seemed to completely ignore his questions.

Matthew heard Gavin rise before he felt Gavin’s body press against his. But for the socks on Matthew’s feet, they were both as naked as the day they’d been born. He felt vulnerable and exposed, and his left hand fell to cover his groin, as if that was going to do a darn thing to help.

“Not an entirely unattractive picture, is it?” one of the strangers said. He clicked his tongue and stared at Gavin. “And look at you, sir. What a cozy little nest you have going on here. Brilliant set up.” His gaze slipped to the side and he eyed Matthew with an advancing grin. “I think we’ll take it.”

wolf-in-league-front-coverWolf, in League

It’s been months since anyone at the Committee has had any contact from the O’Connell family or their pack members, and they are not happy. Suspicious of the activities that took place in D.C. and determined to find out what the wolves are up to, the Committee recruits one of their newest residents, Doctor Matthew Dietrich, to play the part of neighbor and infiltrate the family.

Matthew has always been a keep-to-himself kind of person. Though idealistic and optimistic, he prefers to work in solitude, at night, while he researches the findings that he hopes will one day change the world. When he’s approached by the executives of the Center, he has no idea why they’d choose him. And to say he is skeptical over the concept of men that can shift into wolves would be an understatement. Until he meets his new partner, the man that will play the part of his “husband” in the Committee’s scheme, Doctor Gavin Strauss.

GUEST POST and GIVEAWAY: Wolf en Garde by A.F. Henley

Wolf Animation GIF HeaderWelcome back to the blog tour and giveaway for my newest release, Wolf en Garde. I’ve been taking these opportunities to introduce, or in some cases re-introduce, the characters and places found in the story through tiny teasers from the novel. And we’ve finally got to the point in the tour where we’re meeting some new characters – the people that represent those folks that live on the other side of the wolves.

I realise this introduction sounds remarkably similar to the last post I did, but there’s a reason for that. See, while the last post was used to introduce you to kinds of people that Lyle deals with on the “law” side of things, this one will introduce you to the people on the other side of that law.

And they are also definitely not the kind of people one wants to find standing at one’s door.

However, before I get to the teaser, I want to remind you that as a thank you for joining me, I’m running a giveaway that will get one lucky winner their very own signed, print copy of Wolf en Garde, a sterling silver (nickel and lead-free) Howling Wolf Bangle, and a $20 gift certificate to the Less Than Three Press book market! Be sure to read to the bottom of the post to find out how to enter.

And now, I present:

Tiny Teaser: Introducing – The Other Side of the “Law”

As he waited for room service to deliver their order—one club sandwich, one tuna salad on rye, for the ridiculous price of fourteen dollars a plate—Lyle felt like a prisoner waiting to hear if his stay of execution was going to come through. When the knock finally came, Lyle just about jumped out of his skin.

“Just leave it in the hallway,” Lyle barked, then immediately regretted his attitude. He lowered his voice and tried for pleasant. “Please. And thank you.”

The man’s voice that responded was professional, calm, and soothing. “I’ll need you to sign for it, sir.” The man paused, his voice lightened with what might have been amusement. “Please and thank you.”

Lyle walked to the door and peered through the peephole. The man wore a black suit, a white shirt, and his short dark hair was slicked back in an old-fashioned style that made him look quite attractive in a Bogart kind of way. The silver rectangle over his left breast pocket read “Cabal Horace—Manager”. As if knowing that Lyle was peering at him, Cabal Horace—Manager offered the door a wide, close-lipped smile. Beside him sat a cart draped with white linen, and on the cloth sat two silver domes, two sets of silver folded into white cloth napkins, and a silver pitcher glistening with great drops of sweat. Lyle’s stomach uttered a low, grumpy rumble of hunger.

Fighting the trepidation inside him that was now screaming—Caution! Caution!—Lyle opened the door. “Is there a problem, sir?”

“Not at all!” Cabal grasped the handle of the cart and pushed it into the doorway. “Why ever would you think so?”

Lyle shrugged and let Cabal pass. For reasons he couldn’t explain, Lyle leaned against the door to the bathroom and willed it to stay shut. Lyle pointed at Cabal’s nameplate. “I just thought it was odd that the manager would stop in.”

“Ah, yes, of course.” Cabal pressed the door shut behind him and wheeled the cart deeper into the room. “It is so quiet tonight, you see. And the night can get so long. I prefer to wander than to sit in my office and count the minutes. Besides,” he added, clasping both hands behind him and standing mid-room in an almost soldier-like stance as he eyed Lyle thoughtfully, “if I choose to do the work myself, then I can send some of the staff home. They like that, you see. Family time and all. An unexpected break from the tedium of work. I do what I can to make them happy.”

“That’s very kind of you.”

“Thank you,” Cabal said around a smile. “Are you enjoying your stay?”

There was an inflection to Cabal’s voice that made Lyle want to beat his head against the wall so that he wouldn’t have to hear it. What Lyle found so disdainful he couldn’t tell, but it was there, as clear as the light above their heads.

“Very much,” Lyle replied. “But I am quite hungry. So…”

“And your friend?” Cabal said, ignoring Lyle’s prompt for him to leave. “He’s not with you?”

“He’s out walking,” Lyle lied. Why the lie felt right, he didn’t know. “It’s a beautiful night. And we’ve been in the car for a while. He thought a stretch before bed would be good.”

“Lovely.” Cabal drew the chair out from under the desk and sat. “Perhaps I’ll wait for him to return.”

Suspicion flared into full-out mistrust in Lyle’s guts. “For?”

Another close-lipped smile drew up the corners of Cabal’s lips. It did not reach his eyes. “Why, to see if he’s enjoying the stay, of course. To see if there’s anything we—I—can do to make his stay more pleasurable.”

“There isn’t.”

Cabal’s expression darkened even as his smile grew. “You speak for him?”

Water dripped in the bathroom. It echoed in Lyle’s ears. It was, however, the only sound from the small room.

When Cabal spoke again, his words were nothing more than a whisper. “Are you his alpha?”

Fear gripped Lyle’s stomach. “I don’t understand that term.”

Cabal clucked his tongue. The sharp tsk resounded through the room. “Liar, liar. And see, now you have personally offended me. It will make doling out Arius’s punishment so much easier. I tend to find it hard to work myself into a frenzy when I’m doing it for someone else.”

For the first time since he had shown up at the door, Cabal drew his lips up over his teeth. Long, yellow fangs that appeared to be as ancient as time itself fell over his lower lip. “You know what I mean, don’t you? Wolf?”

PRE-RELEASE REVIEW: Forty-Two Stairs by A.F. Henley

Forty-two Stairs

Forty-Two Stairs by A.F. Henley

The blurb…

Owen has been struggling with addiction since he was a teenager, but it takes a DUI involving another vehicle for him to finally face his issues. The road to recovery is a rough one, and for Owen it’s a journey made harder by bankruptcy, loneliness, and repressed memories.

His new apartment doesn’t help either. It’s small, worn, and hot as hell. The only way to reach it is a tedious stretch of stairs that seems like the final insult on top of a whole pile of misery. Thankfully, the mess comes with one bright spot: intense, pretty Sebastian, who seems to have a knack for keeping his head up and finding the beauty in everything.

So what did I think?

Owen and Sebastian– two men who aren’t perfect, men with issues and baggage– who take a journey of discovery and find out that sometimes it is easier to move forward with someone to lean on, and that “someone” doesn’t need to be perfect.

Owen is at a low point in his life, a drunk driving charge resulting in him losing his job, home and boyfriend. He is placed on probation and needs to start over and therefore moves into a small apartment, directly over Sebastian’s apartment. It takes him forty-two stairs to reach his new apartment– a tortuous journey that Sebastian assures him will become easier.

The story follows the evolution of Owen and Sebastian’s relationship against the doubts they both have. Owen, as reinforced by his brother and his AA sponsor, believes that a new relationship will hinder his recovery. But it’s not as simple as overcoming the physical addiction– there are many ghosts in Owen’s past that drove him to lose himself in alcohol. Sebastian has his own issues and doesn’t want to hurt Owen in any way.

Purple-haired Sebastian is the highlight of the story. There was something so engaging about his character. He also responded so beautifully to Owen, knowing what needed to be said to help Owen to deal with the ghosts from his past and move forward with this life. I would love to spend some more time with Sebastian, to get to know him, more insight into his problems and how he ended up maintaining the apartment block.

Owen’s life does change and his relationship with Sebastian deepens in parallel with his ability to climb the forty-two steps without getting breathless.

“Yeah,” Owen chuckled. “Those first few trips up are nasty. You get used to it, though.”
His mother rose and tugged her clothing into place. “Let me guess? You just have to keep making the trip.”
“And look up,” Owen said brightly. “You’d be surprised the difference that looking up makes.”

Second Star to the Right by A.F. Henley

Second Star to the RightSecond Star to the Right by A.F. Henley

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Blurb…

Be it unrequited fascination with his straight best friend or impossible fantasies of rekindled interest with his heartbreaking ex, Mason has no clue why the perfect connection seems to keep slipping through his fingers. When another lonely holiday seems like too much weight to shoulder, Mason gives up on romance and seeks out the next best thing—rented company. Jack is everything a person could want in an escort: willing, hot, and built like an angel.

Mason can’t resist. After all, who wouldn’t be interested in a guy who loves kid’s movies, is a self-professed Peter Pan, and has no problem throwing caution to the wind at a moment’s notice. But then interest quickly blooms into a whole new emotion—an emotion that Mason knows far too well, especially when Jack has no interest in returning it, preferring to keep his heart safely tucked away in Neverland.

So what did I think?

Second Star to the Right was a single sitting book for me and I thoroughly enjoyed the story of Mason and Jack.

Mason wants someone to see him for the man he is, not what he can provide. He has been burned in the past which has contributed to his low self esteem. He also has complex feelings for his best friend which complicate things.

Jack is the man whom Mason has rented for a week. I loved Jack, although why on earth Mason took him away for a week was initially beyond me – his initial approach and rule setting didn’t make him very engaging!

They played off each other beautifully, each with their own insecurities and fears and obviously perfect for each other, if only they could see it!

“You are an idealistic princess.”
“And you are a miserable troll,” Mason smiled. “Good thing they made you pretty, hmm?”
“I guess we’re both kinda fucked up, aren’t we?”
“Yeah,” mason chuckled. “Yeah, we are.”

An additional star for the emotional coming together of these two men when they got their acts together and a big plus for the happy ending!

I will definitely be checking out more books from this author.
