INTERVIEW: When Will I Be Loved by Julie Lynn Hayes

Today we are joined by Julie Lynn Hayes who kindly answers some of our questions. There’s also a giveaway!

Miller Fenwick wants the kind of happy ending his best friend got, with the hunky werewolf of his dreams. Trouble is, there doesn’t seem to be a Prince Charming on the horizon, and casual encounters don’t cut it anymore. Now that Alexx and Raoul are engaged, Miller is becoming resigned to being the bridesmaid, never the bride. But a chance encounter with a sexy stranger at Charisma has his hopes soaring, and his heart is wide open to possibilities.

Holt Wynne is the head of Helios, the largest vampire organization in the country. He’s a very influential and wealthy man, with a deep-seated hatred of werewolves. His running into Miller at Charisma isn’t entirely accidental. He’d meant to wait, but his emotions got the better of him, and he couldn’t stay away. And now see what he’s done…

Wait until Miller finds out he’s sortof just gotten married to the sexy vampire who hates the people who are Miller’s best friends. Sparks are gonna fly—and not just in the bedroom. One thing for sure—life in Crescent Bay is never dull!

Thanks for joining us today, Julie, and congratulations on your new release. The story sounds fabulous – who can resist a blurb featuring a sexy influential vampire!

Firstly let’s talk about Miller. Can you give us a bit more information about Miller and his desire to find his Prince Charming?

Julie:  Thanks so much for having me here today, Nic! Well, Miller is about 33, and he works as a receptionist at the Crescent Bay Chronicle, the town’s only newspaper. His best friend Alexx used to work there too, until he met Raoul Marchand and ended up with a hunky werewolf on his hands. Miller spends a lot of time with the couple, and he desires that sort of love too. Sure, he’s had dates, kissed all kinds of frogs, but never found his prince. He is questioning that this kind of love will ever happen to him when he meets a mysterious sexy blond at Charisma, Raoul and Alexx’s nightclub, and that’s when it begins…

Can you share with us, some information about Helios and what it means for Holt to head up the organization?

Julie: Helios is the largest vampire group in the country. Holt has been the head of the company ever since his mentor, Marcus Leandro, was killed. Holt cares for everyone who works for him, whether vampire or human, and he’s dedicated to making life better for his vampires. To that end, he has a scientist who is doing research on certain things that will make a big difference to the vampires. However, Holt cannot abide werewolves, and he is not shy about making that known, or throwing the weight of his group against them. Considering who Miller’s best friends are, things could get tricky.

Where do you find your inspiration and how much ‘world building’ takes place before you start writing? It there lots to do before you drive in and start writing the story?

Julie: I find my inspiration in all sorts of ways, to be honest. It could be an overheard phrase, a picture, something I see on the street. One time, we were heading to the theater to see Shutter Island, and I was thinking that Leonardo DiCaprio never ages, like he’s a vampire, and suddenly, I have the beginning of Leonardo DiCaprio is a vampire.

In the case of When Will I Be Loved, part of my worldbuilding was already done, since this is the second book, and we saw Crescent Bay in the first one. However, I did have to create Holt and Helios, and his people, and since Miller was a secondary character, I had to flesh him out.

Sometimes I need to do a lot of worldbuilding in advance, like for the fantasy story I’m writing with Chris T. Kat – we set up a world, and characters, and basic plottage for three books. Other times, I have a character, and I just start to write and see where the journey takes me!

The blurb sounds intriguing. Can you share any secrets of how Miller and Holt end up married? Or do we need to wait and read the book? 🙂

Julie: Sorry, you’ll have to read the book to find out any of that 🙂

I love to know what authors are reading. What are you currently reading or have you just finished a book you can recommend?

Julie: I just finished reading Murder on the Orient Express today. I recommend all Agatha Christie’s books. I recently read Fool Moon, the second book in the Dresden Files series, and I recommend that. Next, I’m going to read Cronin’s Key II, by NR Walker. Loved the first book.

When you’re not working, writing, or on the promo trail, what occupies your time?

Julie: Wow, that’s a lot of my time, but I also edit. I like to watch favorite TV shows and movies, and I enjoy cross stitching.

What can your readers expect from you next?

Julie: As I said before, I’m working on a fantasy series with Chris T. Kat, the first book is The Prince and the Mercenary. I’m working on my first PI novel, also part of a series, Personal Business. And the third book in the Moonlit Skies series, Be My Everything. Besides that, I have an ongoing flash at my blog called Don’t Look Back, which is rather taboo.

Thanks for having me here today, Nic. Have a great day!

Miller forced himself to take a breath, unaware until he did that he’d stopped breathing.

Quit being ridiculous. Wine going to your head already?

But he’d only had the one glass. And he hadn’t even finished that. He wasn’t such a lightweight, when it came to holding his alcohol, and he knew it.

He told himself it was just his imagination. But just to be safe, he began a slow cautious turn, looking around him, without appearing to be searching for anything—or anyone.

And there he was.

Standing a heartbeat away from Miller was one of the sexiest men he’d ever seen in his life. A man every bit as sexy as Raoul Marchand, although not in the same feral way as the werewolf.

This man was light where Raoul was dark. His hair was a honey blonde which stood out by virtue of being obviously natural, in a place where most blondes were either created by the sun or came from a bottle. He stood a little taller than Miller, exuding a presence that went beyond the merely physical, possessed of the bearing and mien of a veritable god.

But it was his eyes that drew Miller in and held him spellbound. Blue and green, like staring into tropical waves, flecked with bits of pure molten gold. And the way he was staring at Miller was sending the most delicious shivers traveling up and down his spine.

The man took a step toward Miller, his hand outstretched. Before Miller quite realized what had happened, he’d placed his own hand inside of the other man’s, and he found himself being drawn onto the dance floor.

About the author

Julie Lynn Hayes first began publishing short stories and poetry in the 1990’s, when it was a different ballgame altogether, and Ebooks hadn’t been dreamed of yet. That changed in 2010 with the acceptance of her first romance novel. She’s come a long way since that first book appeared, and is finding the journey a very educational one.

She lives in St. Louis with her daughter Sarah and her cat Ramesses. She often writes of two men finding true love and happiness in one another’s arms, and is a great believer in the happily ever after. She likes to write in different genres, to stretch herself in order to see what is possible. Her great challenge is to be told something can’t be done—she feels compelled to do it.

When she isn’t writing, she enjoys crafts, such as crocheting and cross stitch, needlepoint and knitting, and she loves to cook, spending time watching the Food Network. Her favorite chef is Geoffrey Zakarian. Her family thinks she’s a bit off, but she doesn’t mind. Marching to the beat of one’s own drummer is a good thing, after all. Her published works can be found at Dreamspinner Press, eXtasy Books, Wayward Ink Press, and Amber Quill Press.

REVIEW: Chase and Capture by Hurri Cosmo

chase and capture

It was only a game, right? An adult twist on “Capture the Flag”. Very adult, actually. Especially the “flag” and where it went. In fact, the only similarity between the kid version and the adult version was you still needed to capture your opponent’s flag to win. So how the hell had Camden ended up here? Oh yeah, that’s right, Tanner, Camden’s good buddy from college. He was not going to let Camden waste another birthday. In fact, he was hell bent on getting Camden laid. So much so, the idiot set up this entire weekend gig. And that’s where Camden found himself now; on a remote island, crashing through the woods, playing a chase and capture game, trying like hell to stay ahead of his pursuer. But why was he the one being chased? Why was Camden the prey and that big, sexy, dark haired, muscle bound, relentless god of a man, Gunner, the hunter? It should be the other way around because it was Camden’s birthday, damn it! Well, thankfully there were going to be three rounds played because it looked like Camden was going down before even reaching the first check point. Yep. Going down on all fours, flag confiscated and…well, let’s just say he would be screwed.

So… what was the down side of losing again?

What did I think?

This is a sizzling action romantic erotica. I thought the writer was very creative with this adult version of the MM “Capture the Flag” game. I can imagine it would make a lot of readers swoon because of what it represents… a totally hedonistic, free adult fun time. I really liked Camden’s character as a wounded hero and Gunner was nothing less than an alpha male in the story. In the story these two males were perfect for each other. I loved how Gunner was chasing Camden in the woods. Those parts were so easy for me to visualize in my head and I loved it. The sensuous moments between them was nothing less than hot.

I guess the suspense and thriller in the story started well and intriguing, but near the end, it became a little over the top for me and I found myself losing my interest. I also felt that Stephen’s interpersonal skills were a little over the top so whenever he was on the scene, I found myself getting too irritated with him, which was distracting for me…. So the plot was a bit too layered and complex, but the “capture the Flag” game part was fascinating because those scenes were well described and explained. There were some hint of BDSM scenes, but that was all.

Despite the over the top plot, I liked reading this story because in its own way, it still flowed with its HEA ending. But who cares after all, this story gave me a good time to escape from the daily stresses so it was a pleasant story of escapism. 3 stars

REVIEW: Come By Chance by A. J. Llewllyn

The blurb

When photographer’s assistant Gary Holland meets three Australian underpants models—all called Bruce—on what should be a routine shoot in LA, it turns out to be anything but. He falls for the geekiest, yet sexiest, Bruce of them all, but soon learns Bruce has not only never been with another man but is an anxious virgin.

Bruce lives in the whimsically named town of Come By Chance in northern New South Wales, population 178. After a torrid fling starts in California, Bruce wants Gary to visit him in the land down under. Shocks, laughter, love, a shy kangaroo named Phillip, a goose called Zeus and a tractor that thinks it’s a horse, soon welcome Gary to a life he never thought he’d want to live. Can two men who are such opposites make a life together? Does love like this really…come by chance?

What did I think?

This was a fun little story. I was interested to read it because of the Australian characters and the Australian setting for part of the book. The characters were likable, and the pace fast, making this an easy book to read in one sitting.

The first part of the story takes place in the US where Bruce (one of three Bruce’s) takes part in an underwear modelling shoot. He and Gary fall for each other and Gary ends up following Bruce back home to Australia.

Part of the story reads like a travel article, particularly the descriptions of the attractions of Sydney. As a Sydney-sider, I can attest that they are mostly spot on. Bruce happens to be an architect so there’s a lot of information given about the early convict architecture of the city.

Bruce seemed quite versatile and a touch unrealistic – underwear model, architect, building owner, resident of a small outback town (population 187).

On their travels, Bruce and Gary explore their sexual relationship and meet some interesting characters (I’m not completely sure about the relevance of the whole part about dinner with the kid wanting to be on Toddlers and Tiaras), and end up at Bruce’s home in the country town of Come By Chance (I had to look it up but it does exist!). There we meet the elderly aunt, the pet kangaroo and the boys have fun on a tractor.

So all in all, a bit of light-hearted fun, that provides a bit of Australian flavour.

The blurb

Kendall Webber is deep in the closet. Between working as a mechanic in a garage, having served in the army during the era of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, and being raised by a fundamentalist-preacher stepfather who sent him to summer camps to make him straight, he’s learned to hide his sexuality from absolutely everyone.

Still, when a tall, dark, and handsome stud named Barton Willis III roars into the garage in his vintage Mustang, Kendall can’t help but look admiringly and longingly at the man, just a little. And when the flirtatious Barton not only looks back but eagerly invites him to explore his hidden desires, Kendall’s whole world is turned upside-down.

Now, the question remains…can Barton help Kendall let go of the past and the attitudes he’s had, literally, beaten into him?

Our thoughts

Blue Collar is quite typical of Sean Michael’s usual style, i.e. – hot, hot and hotter. Kendall comes from a very conservative uptight family that, as Kendall says, think they can pray the gay away. This has really messed him up which is how he finds himself unkissed, untouched and a virgin when Barton comes walking into the auto shop where Kendall works. Barton is Kendall’s opposite in just about every way but one, they’re both gay. Barton is well off and very sure of himself. He’s also sure of the potential for a lot of heat between him and Kendall as well as a little submission.

Blue Collar has lots of nice innuendo peppered throughout the story. The story advances quickly at the start, slows a bit towards the middle but picks back up and ends on a high note. Kendall and Barton are so hot together and could use a sequel.

“Are you wanting factory original or an upgrade to a catback?”

One dark eyebrow rose. “Which’ll make it run better?”

“Well, it depends. The cats give a great sound, but the Borlas? They’re loud and I love the look from the rear. It’s a matter of money and taste and sound.” Kendall headed to the office, rambling on about all the different types and prices and options.

“I like a good-looking rear,” the guy told him when he’d done talking.

“Then you might consider the Borlas. It’s a little pricey, but fine. This is my boss, Pete. He’ll hook you up.”

“Oh, I’d rather you hook me up.”

Was that as suggestive as it sounded?

“I… Okay. Okay, I can help.” He’d done a few custom orders, but Pete would have to approve everything.

The man held out his hand. “Barton Willis, the Third.”

“Kendall. Pleased.” He held out his hand, then pulled it back. He was a grease monkey after all. “I’ve been working, man.”

“I imagine I can wash my hands.”

“Yeah, I tell myself that a lot, but the grime’s pretty deep.” He was not flirting. Not.

“Nothing wrong with a dirty boy.”

About the author

Often referred to as “Space Cowboy” and “Gangsta of Love” while still striving for the moniker of “Maurice,” Sean Michael spends his days surfing, smutting, organizing his immense gourd collection and fantasizing about one day retiring on a small secluded island peopled entirely by horseshoe crabs. While collecting vast amounts of vintage gay pulp novels and mood rings, Sean whiles away the hours between dropping the f-bomb and pursuing the kama sutra by channeling the long lost spirit of John Wayne and singing along with the soundtrack to “Chicago”.

A long-time writer of complicated haiku, currently Sean is attempting to learn the advanced arts of plate spinning and soap carving sex toys.

Barring any of that? He’ll stick with writing his stories, thanks, and rubbing pretty bodies together to see if they spark.

The Blurb…

After breaking up with his boyfriend Josh for the fifth time, Jeremy Woodward is in desperate need of a change. At the urging of his best friend, Jeremy decides to tag along on a trip to Nashville in the hopes of finding a job in minor league baseball. Even though Jeremy knows little about the game, the chance for a fresh start and a little distance from his old life is too hard to pass up. A short time later, Jeremy returns from Nashville with a new job, a fresh beginning, and sizzling memories of a one-night stand with a baseball player named Trevor.
While working for the Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, Jeremy gets a taste of the life he wants. But his past is never far away. His ex, Josh, has promised to wait patiently for him to come to his senses. And the sexy Trevor, the team’s star third baseman, is never far away. Even though Jeremy works in the minor leagues, he’s got a major-league decision to make. Does he keep stealing time with the guy at third? Run home to the safety of his ex? Or perhaps take a chance on something exciting and entirely new with Theo, the cute guy hiding underneath the mascot suit?…

So what did I think?

4 Inside-the-Park Home Run Stars

I went into this book knowing nothing about the story or the author. Fortunately, I was pleasantly surprised. Very much so in fact.

Jeremy is one of those guys who goes from one bad relationship to the next. He is always making the wrong decisions, leaping before he looks. The one time he tries to do the right thing, however, that’s the wrong thing too. So instead of pursuing Theo, who is obviously perfect for Jeremy, he friend zones him.

The sexual tension in this story was yummy. My frustration with Jeremy was immeasurable. I wanted to reach into my Kindle, grab him by the shoulders and shake him. Hard. And often. The hurt that Jeremy suffered each time it seemed that Theo was moving on was palpable. Towards the end though, Jeremy’s continuing failure to just tell Theo how he felt got a little old. The almost telling him then backing away happened one, maybe two, times to many for my tastes.

It should be noted that this isn’t really a sports book. Jeremy and his friend go to work for a minor league baseball team. One of Jeremy’s countless mistakes is a “relationship” with a ballplayer. You get lots of interesting tidbits about stadium operations and the like, but it’s not really a book about an athlete. Which was fine with me. The story worked, even if the cover was a bit misleading. And none of that will dissuade me from posting the picture above.

Also, there wasn’t a lot of on page sex. Of course, sex is good but the way it was written at least the romance scenes didn’t feel like they were being cut off just as things were getting hot.

How West Was Won

Hurri Cosmo

The blurb:

Jake is on a much-needed vacation when he receives a desperate call from Alan, his former boyfriend. Against his better judgment, Jake comes to Alan’s aid. But when the men get stranded in the middle of nowhere, Alan is determined to get to town before the sun sets rather than spend the night in the car. Unfortunately, they have to cut across private property to do it. Since it’s trespassing, they could get arrested—or surrounded by a bunch of cowboys hell bent on teaching the trespassers a lesson.

Thankfully, a muscular, stunning cowboy named Colton shows up to save the day. But he’s not about to let Jake off easy. It seems there are still a few lessons to be learned, and it looks like they might involve leather, some handcuffs, and a suspiciously high, padded trunk..

So what did Robyn think?

I loved the characters in this one.  Jake was a submissive at heart but he was also a bit of brat. His ex-boyfriend Alan was hilarious in a douchebucket way but I loved him regardless.

Colton?  Well he was large and imposing and his barn would probably scare most people.  But not Jake, he took to it like a duck to water.

So if you like a bit of D/s with an implied HEA and a quick one to get you in the mood, then look no further.

So grab a cuppa, (or a wine 🍷) and enjoy this kinky little short.

Series review: Kinky Quickies by Kim Dare

This series is made up of three relatively short stories – perfect when you just want a little dose of light BDSM!

Kinky Quickies

  • Better Than Sexbook #1
  • Differentbook #2
  • Making It Count book #3

Better Than Sex (Kinky Quickies, #1)

Better Than Sex

by Kim Dare

The Blurb…

Brody has been admiring the new-guy at the engineering firm where he works for the last six months. Wallace is all the things Brody isn’t—confident, stunning, sex on legs, oh, and straight. Brody is resigned to considering working alongside Wallace the highlight of his week and fantasizing about Wallace the full extent of his sex life, but apparently Wallace has other ideas.

The moment he joined the firm, Wallace knew he’d have trouble keeping his hands off Brody. In an effort to stay professional at work he’s kept his sexuality to himself, but that’s about to change. When he hears Brody say that seeing the latest project leave the premises is better than sex, Wallace knows he has to take action. It’s time someone taught Brody how good sex can be—especially when it’s served up with a generous helping of leather.

So what did I think?

Imagine lusting after the ‘straight’ guy at work for months and then finding out he was just waiting for the project to end so that he could focus on what he really wanted– to open your eyes to your truly submissive nature. And it doesn’t take much for Brody to realise that Wallace is absolutely right.

“In that moment, he kne that Wallace really could do anythingwith him–not because he was bigger or stronger, but because Brody would simply let him.”

Cute little quickie with some hot sexiness going on. 3 stars

Different (Kinky Quickies, #2)

by Kim Dare

The blurb..

Matthew and Stuart have been dating for more than five months and Stuart thinks things are going well—right up until the moment Matthew suggests they try something different, the kind of different that involves bondage, spanking and leather.

Matthew’s been building up to making this suggestion for weeks, dropping subtle hints and hoping Stuart won’t completely freak out at the mention of kink. Now, with Matthew’s desires out in the open, all he can do is hope that introducing something different will make their relationship perfect rather than destroy it completely…

What did I think?

I liked the uniqueness of the situation. Two men in an established relationship where one needs to work up the courage to find out whether the other is open to ‘doing something different one night’? And no, Matthew wasn’t talking about taking Stuart out to try some sushi! 🙂

“I do enjoy a little bit of leather now and again,” he admitted.
Casual enough? Too casual? Clear enough to make himself understood? Too likely to make Stuart run for the vanilla flavoured hills?

This is very light BDSM as Matthew shows Stuart what he wants out of their relationship and shows him that he is not like Stuart’s ex.

3.5 stars – it was nice to see the lighter side and focus on the difficulty of broaching a potential delicate topic! 🙂

Making It Count (Kinky Quickies, #3)

Making It Count

by Kim Dare

The blurb…

Duncan’s wanted to do a scene with Toby ever since he met him in their first study group of the year, but when Toby failed to flirt back, or pick up on a single kinky hint, Duncan knew he had no choice but to back off. He always thought that Toby would be interesting if he ever came out of the kinky closet—but it never even occurred to Duncan that he’d suddenly find the boy standing on the doorstep of the club he runs.

Toby’s been fascinated and intimidated by Duncan in equal measure for months. When his flat-mate bails out on a kinky play-date with Duncan at the last moment, Toby’s need overtakes his nervousness. Before he has time to think twice, he’s there, offering himself up as a replacement sub for the night.

This might be the only chance Toby has to fulfill all his fantasies surrounding Duncan—and he’s determined to make it count.

So what did I think?

This is the perfect story for those wanting to explore something a little different – not too kinky, but an interesting start as Toby has to prove how much he wants to spend some time playing with Duncan.

Duncan usually plays with Mike, his flatmate, but Mike can’t make their regular appointment so Toby goes in his place. Inexperienced, he doesn’t really know what he’s agreeing to.

A little bit of voyeurism starts the scene as Toby is left to kneel before a closed front door to show Duncan just how far he is willing to go.

3 stars for this little quickie.

Tabby’s Pride by K-lee Klein

Rock stars and shifters make a great combination!

Tabby's Pride

Tabby’s Pride

by K-lee Klein

The blurb…

Levi Tabberton has dreamed of being a rock star ever since his brother’s best friend, Alexander Morrison, showed him his guitar when he was young. But becoming a member of his boyhood crush’s band, Lion’s Pride, is even more important.

Growing up, Levi emulated Alexander, and now, years later, that feeling remains when he auditions for the band. Xan is laidback, caring, gorgeous, and takes Levi under his wing—or rather, his paw. But Levi’s guilt and insecurity hold him back from letting Xan see the real him.

Levi needs to prove himself worthy of the band and deserving of Xan’s attention, but the lengths to which he’s gone have left him reeling with anxiety and exhaustion. Levi’s not sure how much longer he can pull off his charade to reach his goals and to keep Xan’s affections.

Has he made the right choice by putting on an act, or will his dreams fade in a catastrophe of lies and uncertainty?

So what did I think?

This shifter story was a little bit of fun! The shifter plus the rock star element was an interesting combination especially when Tabby/Levi’s secret is added into the mix. Levi is desperate to join the band, Lion’s Pride, that his childhood friend Xan is a member of, so desperate that he has gone to extreme lengths to do so.

The story follows the growing relationship between Levi and Xan and the struggles Levi faces as he battles the physical effects resulting from his actions and the mental anguish of deceiving his lover.

This is more a typical romance where not a lot of shifting actually happens although the fact these guys are shifters is key to the story. For that reason, this book might make a good ‘starter’ story for for someone who is new to the genre and wants to check it out.

It was entertaining and had a cute twist at the end. 3.5 stars

Happy reading!

Nic xx

The blurb…

Tiger-shifter Grio has one job, locating dormant tiger-shifters and introducing them to the world of Saffron Tigers. When he finds Professor Phoenix Lamoure, he soon discovers that Headquarters got a couple of key points wrong—Phoenix isn’t actually a professor, but he is Saffron Tiger royalty, a member of the lost royal line.

Phoenix didn’t have things easy growing up. His mother spent most of her life in a mental institution, and he spent his formative years in foster care. When a stranger approaches and tries to unearth his family history, Phoenix becomes wary. And when the stranger actually kidnaps him, all bets are off!

Can Phoenix ever believe what Grio has to tell him? Or will he be forever convinced that he’s as crazy as his mother?

So what did Robyn think?

There was a lot going on in this short story and it was very fast paced. Phoenix is a long lost prince of the tiger shifter line, but he doesn’t know it.  It’s Grio’s job to show him who he really is and train him how not to shift in public because who would want a wild tiger roaming the city streets?  What neither man expected was to find their ‘mate’.  And mate they did.  For short story their were quite a few sex scenes, whilst short were still fairly hot.
So if you like your shifters and have a spare hour give this one a go.

Hope you enjoy!

Although veterinary technician Carlton is violently allergic to cats, he loves them with an undying passion, enough to tolerate miserable symptoms to keep working with the felines in the San Maribal Zoo. The cheetahs especially fascinate him. Then he meets a mysterious stranger who is evasive about why he’s in the zoo after hours, and nude! This man tells Carl there’s a cat inside him wanting to get out. That sounds really crazy, and the suggested way to make the shift happen sounds even crazier—but exciting.
Zyl is a member of the ancient shifter tribe, or Were-Kind. His people are working to enforce humane treatment of animals and save endangered species. Hearing of a planned raid by an extreme animal rights group to free the denizens of zoos, they realize this will be a catastrophe. Joining forces with regular humans to avert the problem will mean “coming out” as the powerful beings they are. Again, a potential disaster. Attracted against his better judgment, Zyl teams up with the cat lover he met under awkward circumstances only to discover a valuable ally and a soul mate..
