Gay Romance Novel mm romance reading recommendations

Here’s what’s on our Kindles (and what we’re listening to) this month. So many great books!

Nic

I write on the sweeter side so every now and then I like to delve into something a little darker. And that’s exactly what I  found with Avril Ashton‘s latest, Kiss Your Scars (#3 in her Loose Ends series). It’s all about the underworld with twists and turns, violence and lots of sex. Click here to check it out.

Re-reading is not something I often do but this month I re-read of Nowhere Ranch by Heidi Cullinan. I love the voice of the characters and the emotional journey plus that wonderful kinky sex. Find out more here. Are there any books that are your favourite re-reads?

I couldn’t resist getting into some of that Winter Olympic spirit with The Winning Edge by Keira Andrews, a fabulous story about competing figure skaters. Click here to check it out.

RJ Scott also made my list with two of the books from her Sanctuary series. I think I’ve read most of RJ’s books and really enjoy all her series. Find out more about the series here.

I’ve queued up my next audio book. Splintered by SJD Peterson is the story of an FBI agent on a case to chase down someone murdering gay men so I’m looking forward to getting stuck into a good mystery/thriller. It is performed by Rusty Topsfield. You can find it on Audible.

Allison Temple and I signed contracts for sweeter, small-town contemporary series on about the same day, so when her first novel, The Pick Up, was released, you can bet I wanted to check it out. It’s one of the cutest books I’ve read in a while and I’m really looking forward to continuing the series. Find out more here.

I’ve also just finished reading Mason Thomas‘ second novel, The Shadow Mark, and I liked it even better than his first book (which was pretty excellent). If you like fantasy with strong gay protagonists, you should check out his Lords of Davenia series. Click here to find out more.

The hero of Color of You, Bowen Merlin, sees sound as color, known as sound-to-color synesthesia. Author CS Poe paints a picture with her words in this story about how Bowen finds love in a small town with amber-voiced Felix Hansen. This book was both sexy and tender, and it’s one of my favorites of recent memory. Click here to find out more.

Felice Stevens writes about New York City as if the city itself is a character. She makes you feel as if you’re walking down a cracked sidewalk in the rain, sitting in a small mom and pop restaurant, or schlepping out to Long Island on the train. In Perfect, Blake Myers thinks he has to be perfect to keep the attention of Jeremy Strauss, and when his life becomes anything but, he gets caught piling up one lie after another. Click here to find out more.

Nicky James is a new-to-me author. In Love Me Whole, she writes about a hero with dissociative identity disorder. Oryn Patterson shares his body with five alter personalities, each very distinct and not all of them happy to share. This was a slow build, very tender story of how Oryn opens his heart not only to Vaughn Sinclair but also to the alters. Click here to find out more.

Happy reading.

xx

Meet Felice Stevens

Meet contributing author Felice Stevens…

I have always been a romantic at heart. I believe that while life is tough, there is always a happy ending around the corner, My characters have to work for it, however. Like life in NYC, nothing comes easy and that includes love.

I live in New York City with my husband and two children and hopefully soon a cat of my own. My day begins with a lot of caffeine and ends with a glass or two of red wine. I practice law but daydream of a time when I can sit by a beach somewhere and write beautiful stories of men falling in love. Although there are bound to be a few bumps along the way, a Happily Ever After is always guaranteed.

On 9/11 firefighter Nick Fletcher’s world changed forever. He’s unable to rid himself of survivor’s guilt

made worse by the secret he hides from his family and co-workers. Nick’s life is centered around helping burn victims until he is reunited with the man he’d once loved but pushed away. Now he has a second chance at a love he thought lost forever.

For fashion designer Julian Cornell appearances mean everything. His love affairs are strictly casual

and the only thing he cares about is making his clothing line a success. A chance encounter with the man he loved long ago has Julian thinking for the first time in years there may be more to life than being seen at the best parties and what designer labels to wear.

When Julian’s world takes an unexpected turn it’s Nick who helps him regain perspective on what matters most in life. Julian in turn helps Nick accept who he is and understand he isn’t responsible for tragedies he couldn’t prevent. Lost love found can be even sweeter the second time around and after all the years apart both men learn to look beyond the surface to find the men they are inside.

Excerpt:

Julian was in the kitchen, sitting on one of the stools by the counter. He had a glass in front of him filled with what Nick presumed was vodka, having spied the Grey Goose bottle.

“Would you like a drink? I have beer, wine…anything you’d like.”

Nick shook his head, regret piercing his heart as he watched the hope drain from Julian’s eyes.

“I don’t think so. I’m going to head home. I want you to know how much I appreciate what you did for Jamal tonight.”

Julian stood abruptly, kicking the stool away from his feet.

“Don’t treat me like I’m some fucking stranger, Nicky. You owe me. It’s been eighteen years; you think I’m going to let you walk out on me again like you did before? After what just happened between us? After you fell apart? No fucking way. I’m not that same person and neither are you, obviously.”

Taken aback by Julian’s anger, Nick remained mute.

“What the hell is going on with you? One minute you’re tongue fucking me into the next century and the next you’re freaking out. I know I’m a damn good kisser, but this isn’t about us, is it? It has nothing to do with our past and everything to do with you and the shit that’s floating around in your head.”

Julian stepped closer to him and Nick, who normally couldn’t stand people near him, was rooted to the floor, unable to move.

“Talk to me, Nicky. Tell me what happened to you.”

He was so tired of holding himself together, feeling like at any moment he’d shatter into a million tiny pieces, leaving nothing behind but a pile of dust.

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.

The words poured out of him, flowing unchecked this time. “It should’ve been me. We all went to the Towers to save them. It was my day off, but I went anyway. I heard and couldn’t stay home; I had a duty to help, you know? But I lived and they all died. Why, Julian? Why did I live and they didn’t?”

“Oh, Nick.” Julian held him close. “I don’t have the answers for you. No one does. But I’m going to be completely selfish and say I’m so thankful you did make it and we’re here together after all these years.”

Unflinching green eyes gazed back at him. Clever, beautiful eyes that Nick could never stop dreaming of. Eyes that at one time had held the promise of forever, until Nick ruined everything with his cowardice and shame. Unable to maintain Julian’s scrutiny, Nick broke away and ran to the elevator, his chest heaving, eyes stinging with tears.

“Let me out. I need to leave here. NOW.”

About the author:

I have always been a romantic at heart. I believe that while life is tough, there is always a happy ending just around the corner. I started reading traditional historical romances when I was a teenager, then life and law school got in the way. It wasn’t until I picked up a copy of Bertrice Small and became swept away to Queen Elizabeth’s court that my interest in romance novels became renewed.

But somewhere along the way, my tastes shifted. While I still enjoys a juicy Historical romance, I began experimenting with newer, more cutting edge genres and discovered the world of Male/Male romance. Once I picked up her first, I became so enamored of the authors, the character-driven stories and the overwhelming emotion of the books, I knew I wanted to write my own.

I live in New York City with my husband and two children and hopefully soon a cat of my own. My day begins with a lot of caffeine and ends with a glass or two of red wine. I practice law but daydream of a time when I can sit by a beach somewhere and write beautiful stories of men falling in love. Although there is bound to be angst along the way, a Happily Ever After is always guaranteed.

Interview

There are magically 25 hours in a day. What would you do with the extra hour?
Felice: SLEEP!! Between working full-time, and making dinner, doing laundry and all that other fun house stuff, plus writing, I only sleep about 5 hours a night.
Who would you want to have as a stripper at your birthday party?
Felice: Oh does it only have to be one? Cause if not I’d take the Hemsworth brothers and then the Cockyboys star Tatye Hansen. Sigh.
If you could snap your fingers and have an invention to do anything you want, what would you want it to do?
Felice: Clean my apartment !! I know I should say world peace or something deep like that but, honestly if you saw the clutter….
If you were a candy bar what would you taste like?
Felice: A little nutty, slightly spicy with a center of sweetness *bats her eyes and smiles
Do you have a library card and know where it is?
Felice: I most certainly do! It’s in my wallet.  I love our local library and donate many books to them.
Ruthless, Controlling, A Loner. All words used to describe Dr. Micah Steinberg by the hospital staff for their next head of surgery. When a letter arrives from his grandmother’s friend at the assisted living facility, his orderly world tilts dangerously out of control.
Josh Rosen had everything until it was revealed much of his world was a lie. Forced to re-evaluate his life, Josh gives up his career and returns home to New York City to care for his beloved grandmother. What Josh didn’t figure on was an attraction to a man who on the surface, appears to be exactly like the life Josh chose to leave behind.
As Micah struggles with the reality of his grandmother’s illness, the bond they share deepens, as Josh helps Micah heal, then open his heart. Micah discovers there is more to life than work, control and success. Josh is in deep but has yet to tell Micah who he really is.
When the fight for the hospital’s head of surgery turns ugly, Josh’s past and present collide. Micah must let go of the past and accept who he is, if his life is going to move forward.
Life is full of surprises, and as both Micah and Josh learn, love can happen whether you plan for it or not.
