GUEST POST and GIVEAWAY: Patrick’s Savior by Nic Starr

Top 5… Holiday Destinations in Australia

Coming up with Top 5 lists is always so difficult! I find it so hard to narrow down my choices, particularly when there are so many fabulous options. So, as you can imagine, I’m hopeless at choosing ‘the best’ or ‘my ultimate favourite’. Anyway, I’m going to give it my best shot and give you my top 5 holidays destinations in Australia.

In no particular order…

#1 Tasmania – vast wilderness, bushwalking/hiking, Tasmanian Devils, penguins, historic towns, Port Arthur, food and wine…

#2 Darwin – tropical temperatures, crocodiles, swimming holes with waterfalls, Mindil Beach night markets

#3 Broome – Cable Beach, camel rides, Stairway to the Moon, pearls

#4 The Red Centre (Uluru) – Uluru (Ayres Rock), Kata Tjuta (The Olgas), aboriginal history, camel rides, Dinner Under the Stars

#5 Hunter Valley – this deserves a mention because it’s where my country house is located) vineyards, cellar doors, restaurants, outdoor concerts, kangaroos

I was going to write a list of honourable mentions but the list just went on and on because I had no idea where to stop. So many wonderful places to visit in Australia.

I love reading books set in other countries. I get lost in stories that take me to new places – virtual travel! I’ve written some books set in Australia and I love to be able to introduce readers to the places I love.

My latest release is Patrick’s Savior and it’s part of my Heroes series, a series that’s set in the USA. So it’s been fun to do a bit of travel by spending time with Patrick and Simon, and thinking back on my travel to, and research of, the US west coast.

Happy reading (and travelling),

Nic xx

Nic Starr: I AM LUCKY

Lucky

How much of life comes down to chance? How much of it is due to our own efforts? Or is a combination of both?

I count myself as an extremely LUCKY person. I’ve been blessed with a wonderful family and I live in a gorgeous country. I have a job, a roof over my head and plenty of food on the table. I can afford to educate my children and take holidays. We are happy and we are healthy. I AM LUCKY.

Of course, it hasn’t all been a bed of roses. I lost my father to cancer, way too early—it’s heart wrenching to watch someone you love waste away in tremendous pain. I’ve experienced trauma—it’s life changing to help your neighbour cut his wife’s body down when she hangs herself. I’ve mourned and grieved as friends have lost loved ones. I’ve provided advice and support when friends have lost jobs and struggled financially, or dealt with the anguish of a relationship falling apart.

Illness, death, divorce, unemployment, poverty, mental illness… unfortunately the list seems endless. Life throws obstacles in our way. Or sometimes those obstacles are there from the start. We can let them break us, stop us from achieving our goals or we can try to rise above them. I’m tempted to say that nothing should get in the way of making a success of your own life, but you know what? I don’t know if that’s true or not. I don’t know what it’s like to be born into poverty or live in a war-ravaged country. I don’t know what it’s like to have drug-addicted parents or be bullied. I don’t have an illness or a disability. I AM LUCKY. I was born into a comfortable middle-class family in Australia (the so-called ‘Lucky Country’*). I got a good start in life.

Count your lucky stars

I’ve always been told to ‘count your blessings’ or ‘count your lucky stars’. I do and I am grateful. I’m lucky to have been raised by wonderful parents and have the time I did with my dad. I am lucky in love, married to my husband for sixteen years. I am lucky to have two beautiful children. I’m lucky to have a house in the suburbs and a good job.

Making your own luck

But some of what I have isn’t just due to luck. It’s due to hard work and perseverance. It’s due to taking a chance and making the most of every opportunity. My parents instilled positive values and a strong work ethic in all their children. I’ve worked my arse off to get promotions, I’ve tried to develop new skills and gain experience. I’ve made sacrifices. I’ve put myself out there and taken risks.

My writing is just one example. Starting out was nerve wracking, but something I really wanted to try. I had stories I wanted to share. So I asked questions, researched, tried my hand at drafting a story, took advice, refined my story and finally put it out there. I took a chance and was rewarded when a publisher accepted my work (thanks Dreamspinner 🙂 ). Was some of it luck? Maybe. But if I hadn’t put in the hard work and given it a try, none of the writing career that I LOVE would have happened. Has it all been joy? No. I’ve never been rejected by a publisher but some of my first reviews were soul destroying. I’ve experienced lows but luckily I’ve also experienced highs. It only takes one email or message from a reader, thanking me for my stories, to make it all worthwhile.

Pay It Forward

I believe in paying it forward and sharing good fortune. I’ve been fortunate in my life. I want to help others who haven’t been so lucky. At the moment it’s mainly small things, like providing advice and encouragement to others, or slightly bigger commitments such as mentoring a friend in the corporate world. I’m exploring new opportunities. Of course, the most significant thing in my life, is raising my family, ensuring I have happy, healthy children who turn into good adults. I want to give them the opportunities I had in life and see them make a positive impact on the world.

When a challenge presents itself, how to you respond? Do you leap to maximize the opportunities that come your way? Are you making the most of your good fortune and sharing with others?

Check out my latest release, Andrew’s Promise. It’s about a couple who have a second chance at love.

Young mechanic Andrew Campbell’s life couldn’t be better. He is about to restore a Ford Mustang with his dad before heading off on the ultimate cross-country road trip with his best friend, Tanner McKenzie.
AndrewsPromise_postcard_front_DSP
But tragedy strikes, and Andrew’s life is shattered. Worried his family will be torn apart if he doesn’t step in, Andrew makes a tough choice between following his heart and doing what he needs to do to protect his little brother.

When Andrew pushes Tanner away, Tanner heads off on the planned trip alone. Once Tanner leaves town, his life takes a different path and it’s ten years before he returns. Now a firefighter, he’s never forgotten his first love, and no one has ever taken Andrew’s place in his heart. He’s determined to see if Andrew feels the same way. He just hopes Andrew’s excited to see him, hopes that he’s available—and finally out—after all this time.

They might not have been ready to deal with emerging feelings years ago, but now might be the time for their second chance at love.

* There’s a saying that Australia is a “lucky country”. Most people misuse this expression. It was actually written by Donald Horne in 1964 who started a chapter of his book The Lucky Country with “Australia is a lucky country, run by second-rate people who share its luck.” It wasn’t written as a compliment, and most people failed to detect the irony.

Nic Starr: Character Profiles

Cars Complete the Character

I have a lot of fun coming up with my character profiles. I love to imagine how my characters look, how they behave, and how others perceive them. I give them physical characteristics and personality traits. They get hobbies and talents. I give my characters pasts, families, educations, and occupations. And one of the things I always give them is something to drive.

CarIt’s amazing what a vehicle can say about a character. It can be an indication of their personality and lead readers to make assumptions about the type of people they are. Many people judge others on the car they drive and I’m sure this flows over to the heroes in our books.

In Charlie’s Hero, Charlie drives a zippy Audi. He’s a schoolteacher and a very community minded person. His life has focused on finishing college, despite his parent’s rejection, and making a future for himself. Charlie’s a solid man who’s ready to settle down. His love of fast driving and his sporty car is his little departure from his otherwise sensible life. Josh sees the Audi as hint to Charlie’s wilder side which he finds a turn on.

Josh on the other hand, is a paramedic with a dangerous occupation. Cars aren’t really his thing. His brother, Andrew, is a mechanic and has a passion for doing up an old Mustang, but Josh didn’t inherit the family love of cars. Josh drives a practical truck when he’s not at work. His key ring says “My Other Car Is An Ambulance”. 🙂

So what about me? I drive a silver SUV. It’s a Hyundai that I just bought to replace my old Toyota. I’ll leave you to make up your own mind what you think that says about me. 😉

Have a great day,

Nic xx

CommonExcerpt

HE WAS in love. Totally, wonderfully, head over heels in love. Love with a capital L, hell, love in full uppercase. All it took was one look, one simple glance, and he was a goner. Of course the object of his admiration was classically handsome—tall and athletic, glowing with good health. Bright eyes, wide smile, waves of shining hair tucked behind perfect ears. He was like all Charlie’s dreams come true, with golden skin hugging strong muscles that strained on long limbs. But even if Charlie hadn’t been attracted to the man’s spectacular good looks, there was no way to overlook his actions.

CharliesHeroORIG-final-01 (1)When Charlie first saw him, he was kneeling on the schoolyard ground, tending to a little girl who was lying prone on the soft-fall rubber surface under the play equipment. She was one of Charlie’s second graders. Her right leg, bent at a strange, unnatural angle, gave a big clue as to her injury. Charlie hoped the leg was the worst she was hurt.

An efficient auburn-haired paramedic was treating her injured leg while the gorgeous guy knelt by her head, hands on either side of her blonde curls, keeping her still. He whispered into her ear, the words obviously having a calming effect—the little girl stared intently up at him, the hitch in her breathing the only evidence of any distress. There was a gentleness to his touch, despite the large hands, and caring in his tone as he concentrated on his patient. How could Charlie not fall in love with this glorious combination of caring, masculine beauty?

“Mr. Matthews. Mr. Matthews.” The urgent high-pitched voice and persistent tugging on his hand drew his attention reluctantly away from the scene unfolding in the playground. Shit, he thought, what the hell am I doing just standing here staring when I should be taking care of the other children, who are no doubt worried and scared? Dropping to one knee and looking Jennifer in the eye, Charlie gave her his full attention. “What is it, Jenny?” he asked, knowing she was going to voice her worry about her small friend on the ground.

“Is Alison going to be all right, Mr. Matthews?” she asked in a low and quavering voice. He replied in a way he hoped would calm her fears, by keeping his voice even and low.

“She’ll be fine, Jenny. Her mummy and daddy will meet her at the hospital, and Miss Bryant is going to go stay with her until they get there. Alison is in very good hands. See those paramedics?” He pointed toward the action under the monkey bars, and she looked across at the small group on the ground and nodded gravely. “Well, they’re very good at their jobs. They’re going to take Alison to the hospital so the doctors can put a cast on her leg. I’m sure she’ll be back at school in no time.”

“But she won’t be able to play,” she whispered, obviously still worried for her friend.

“No, she won’t,” he admitted. “At least she won’t be able to run around for a while, but she will be able to draw and play board games. I know you love to draw, so maybe you can play with Alison to make her feel better. I bet you’ll be able to write your name on the cast too.”

At that, Jenny met his gaze and finally smiled. “Really!” she said with excitement. “That’d be totally cool!”

They looked up as the paramedics wheeled past with the gurney. Little Alison was tightly strapped aboard. She was lying still, no doubt in shock, and holding tightly to the hand of Charlie’s hero. He only glanced their way for a second, obviously reluctant to take his attention away from the little girl who needed him, but that was enough. Their gazes connected, his warm brown eyes seeming to look straight into Charlie’s soul. The surge of emotion that flooded through him took him by surprise. The paramedic blinked and the spell was broken. They moved swiftly past Jenny and Charlie, then loaded the gurney into the back of the ambulance.

Charlie stood frozen to the spot, still holding Jenny’s small hand in his, and watched the ambulance leave. Finally he took a deep breath, turned back to the schoolyard, and started to round up any children still in the playground.

“Come on, everyone,” he called. “It’s time to get back to class.”

As the last stragglers made their way into the single-story building that housed the small group of classrooms, he knew he would be spending the afternoon reassuring the children. He decided that making get-well cards for Alison would be the best way of distracting the group of second graders.

Charlie

Charlie’s lips tilted in a tentative smile. At first he was smiling to put Josh at ease, but then he realized he had reason to smile. The anger had vanished. The tightness in his chest had disappeared, replaced by total awareness of Josh standing opposite him. Josh raised a hand and cupped Charlie’s cheek as he looked into his eyes. His skin tingled from the gentle touch, and he leaned into Josh’s palm and closed his eyes.

When he opened them again, Josh was looking back at him with such tenderness and yearning, he couldn’t help but lean in to bring their lips together. It was a soft kiss, a barely there promise of something more. Josh’s arm encircled his waist and drew him close again.

“I love you,” Josh whispered against Charlie’s mouth, his sweet, warm breath delivering those momentous words.

Charlie stumbled as his knees gave way, but Josh held him up with his strong arms. “I love you too,” he murmured.

“I know,” Josh said. “I know you do.”

“Let me show you how much.” Charlie turned and pulled back the covers on the bed.

Josh laughed before his expression turned serious. “How about I show you how much?”

He placed the single key on the table and slid it across the laminate surface until it sat directly in front of Josh.

Josh stared at the key for a moment before looking back at Charlie. He tilted his head to one side and his brows came together.

“I want you to have a key to my house. Not just because of Andrew, although I want you to know you will always have somewhere to go, but because I want you to be a part of my life. I want you to be able to come and go as you please.”

About the Author

Nic Starr lives in Australia where she tries to squeeze as much into her busy life as possible. Balancing the demands of a corporate career with raising a family and writing can be challenging but she wouldn’t give it up for the world. Always a reader, the lure of m/m romance was strong and she devoured hundreds of wonderful m/m romance books before eventually realising she had some stories of her own that needed to be told! When not writing or reading, she loves to spend time with her family.
