Kiwi Nathaniel Dunn is in a fighting mood, but how does a man fight Wellington’s famous fog? In the last year, Nate’s lost his longtime lover to boredom and his ten-year job to the economy. Now he’s found a golden opportunity for employment where he can even use his artistic talent, but to get the job, he has to get to Christchurch today. Heavy fog means no flight, and the ticket agent is ignoring him to fawn over a beautiful but annoying, overly polite American man.

Rusty Beaumont can deal with a canceled flight, but the pushy Kiwi at the ticket counter is making it difficult for him to stay cool. The guy rubs him all the wrong ways despite his sexy working-man look, which Rusty notices even though he’s not looking for a man to replace the fiancé who died two years ago. Yet when they’re forced to share a table at the crowded airport café, Nate reveals the kind heart behind his grumpy façade. An earthquake, sex in the bush, and visits from Nate’s belligerent ex turn a day of sightseeing into a slippery slope that just might land them in love.

World of Love: Stories of romance that span every corner of the globe.

Excerpt

“I don’t bloody believe this.” Nathaniel “Nate” Dunn took a deep breath. “So, any idea when my flight might actually leave?”

The woman at the counter gave him what she probably thought was a pleasant smile. Instead it came across as condescending with a touch of oh help me, God, how stupid is this guy?

“I’ve already told you—” She glanced at his ticket. “—Mr. Dunn… Nathaniel… I don’t have that information. The fog will lift when it decides to lift, and we can’t begin to reschedule flights until that time. In the meantime, you’ll have to wait like everyone else.”

“You don’t understand. I have to be in Christchurch this afternoon. I have a job interview tomorrow.”

“Of course you do.” The woman seemed ready to dismiss him but then appeared to reconsider. “If you’re desperate, perhaps you can catch the afternoon ferry sailing to Picton and then a flight from either Blenheim or Nelson.”

“The ferries are full.” Nate read the name on her badge—Heather Rawlins. “Ms. Rawlins, I’ve already thought of that.” He waved his hand to indicate the very full airport. Many of those in line behind him were students. Several of them looked very young, and they had parents hovering around them. Probably their first time away from home, and not a great start to a course of study at either Canterbury or Otago universities. “Uni starts back last week of February. That’s next week. There’s only me and several hundred others trying to make it to the South Island.”

“You’d better settle in and wait, then, hadn’t you? This might take a while.” Heather looked past him. “Next, please.”

“Charming,” Nate muttered. Why the hell had the fog decided to pick today of all days to turn up? Beautiful weather for weeks, and on the only day he needed to fly out of Wellington, the bloody stuff foiled his plans. His flatmate, Amy, had warned him to be prepared for delays when they hadn’t been able to see the airport from across the harbor that morning, but he hadn’t listened. Fog in the morning didn’t mean the stupid stuff would hang around all day. Typical of his luck lately. “Windy Wellington” and today there wasn’t even a breeze to blow the fog out.

It was a conspiracy.

Much like the rest of his life. One could only take so much of pretending everything was hunky-dory and plastering on a false smile. He was sick of it. Bad enough that Glenn—who he’d thought was the “one,” the guy he’d be with forever—had dumped him, but to find out his job of the last ten years was finishing as well? And now this….

“Next, please,” Heather repeated.

“Excuse me, sir,” a man behind him said in an American accent. “There’s a line here, and I’m sure the lady has done all she could to help you.”

The blurb

Luki Vasquez receives the news he’s still cancer free after five years, and he wants to celebrate with his whole family. He and his husband, Sonny James, take a road trip south, intending to gather at the home of his nephew Josh, Josh’s wife Ruthie, and Jade—a little girl who was still in the womb when she and her mother helped Luki beat lung cancer.

Halfway to their destination, Luki learns Josh and Ruthie have met a tragic death. The horrible news lays Luki low, but he pulls himself together in time to be the family’s rock and see to the dreaded business of tying up loose ends. The most important business is Jade, and when Luki and Sonny head home, they take Jade with them.

Luki and Sonny must combat self-doubt and fear and help each other learn to parent an unexpected child—and they must also nourish the love that has kept them whole for the past ten years. A relative’s spurious claim to Jade threatens the new family, and even if they prevail in court, they could lose their little girl unless they can rescue Jade from evil hands and true peril.

Our thoughts

5 stars
If you have read the previous books in this series then you may get where I’m coming from with this review, especially if you read Yes.  Because of Jade takes place five years after Yes and ten years after Loving Luki Vasquez.  Sonny and Luki are doing well, still crazy in love, just received a clean bill of health from Luki’s doctors and they are ready to celebrate with their family.
Their nephew Josh and his wife Ruthie are expecting their second child but Ruthie is having some difficulty with this pregnancy so they decide to move the celebrate to Josh and Ruthie’s home in Southern California.  While Sonny and Luki are on their way down tragedy strikes the family yet again.  Ok so here is were I get made at Ms. Lou Sylvre again, she has taken away yet more characters that we’ve grown to love and dang it she made me cry!  The death of Josh and Ruthie brings the family to their knees; Jackie is having a hard time coping, Kaholo is trying to be the rock for his family as he’s always done, Sonny’s not sure what to do, and Luki is taking the lead by dealing with the details but not addressing his own grief and in the middle of all of this is Josh & Ruthie’s five year old daughter, Jade.
Unknown to Luki and Sonny they have been named as guardians of Jade should anything happen to Josh and Ruthie.  Thrust into the roll of parents nervousness and guilt for both Luki and Sonny.  Luki’s worried he won’t know what to do with a kid let a lone a little girl but he loves Jade so much that he doesn’t let that stop him from stepping up full force.  Sonny is worried and still carries some guilt about his raising of Dylsen and on some level doubts Jade’s need for him in her life because of the bond she has with Luki.
Ready or not, planned or surprised, parenting is hard no matter what the age of the child or parent.  Luki, Sonny, and Jade go through an adjustment period and settle into school and carpools when…Ruthie’s long lost sister and her husband come to break-up their happy home.  Man if you thought Sonny and Luki fought for each other you haven’t seen them fight til you see them fight for Jade!
Because of love, because of family, Because of Jade was a wonderful end to the Vasquez and James series.  I will be the first to say that the first book was good but it wasn’t great but the more I read the more wrapped up I became with this series.  Each story is better than the last.  Are there some holes in the plot? Well yeah but it’s also fiction so you have to suspend reality anyway, so you might as well get caught up in the story.
If you read my first review I told you the story felt a little choppy, well I don’t know if I just got use to author’s style or if her writing just smoothed out either way by the end of book 2 I was in too deep and there was no turning back.  Great series but if I could make one request it would be a story/novella of how Jackie and Brian finally got together….please, please, please! I’m not begging just asking.

The blurb

Professional badass Luki Vasquez and textile artist Sonny James have been married for five years, and despite the sometimes volatile mix, they’re happy. From their first days together, they stood united against deadly enemies and prevailed. But now the deadly enemy they face is the cancer thriving inside Luki, consuming his lungs.

As Luki’s treatment proceeds, Sonny hovers near, determined to provide every care, control every thread of possibility just as he does when he weaves. But he can’t control the progress of the cancer or how Luki’s body reacts to the treatment regime. Sonny tries, but Luki dances with cancer alone-until he gets a startling reminder of the miracle of life. With renewed determination and mutual love, the two men emerge from their coldest winter into a new spring day

This novella, Yes, still has me in tears.  What a touching story of love even during the hard times.

This story takes place five years after Loving Luki Vasquez, when Sonny and Luki are pretty solid in their marriage.  Luki hasn’t been feeling well and has lost some weight.  They decide it’s time to see the doctor…he’s diagnosed with lung cancer.

I believe (because I’ve never had to go through anything like this) that Ms Sylvre  show us all the emotional ups and downs that go with any life threating diagnoses. I laughed a little and cried a lot reading this story.  And yeah I fell love with Sonny & Luki…before this book I just liked them and thought hmm they make for good reading.  I think the reason for that is this story was a little more real life; there are no bad guys trying to kill them, no one has been kidnapped, drugged, or shot at…but there is a very real life and death battle going on for the both of them.

Loved, loved, loved YES

The blurb

Luki Vasquez and his still newlywed husband are back home after pulling off a harrowing desert rescue of their teenage nephew Jackie. But the events of the last couple of years have begun to catch up with Luki—loving Sonny James and letting Sonny love him back has left gaps in his emotional armor. In the gunfight that secured Jackie’s rescue, Luki’s bullet killed a young guard, an innocent boy in Luki’s mind. In the grip of PTSD, memories, flashbacks, and nightmares consume him, and he falls into deep, almost vegetative depression.

Sonny devotes his days to helping Luki, putting his own career on hold, even passing up a European tour of galleries and schools—an opportunity that might never come again. But when Luki’s parasomnia turns his nightmares into real-world terror, it breaks the gridlock. Sonny realizes what he’s doing isn’t working, and he says yes to Europe. Enter Harold Breslin, a dangerously intelligent artist’s promoter and embezzler whose obsessive desire for Sonny is exceeded only by his narcissism. When Harold’s plan for Sonny turns poisonous, Luki must break free of PTSD and get to France fit and ready in time to save his husband’s life.

Our thoughts

4 stars

Another good book in the Velasquez & James series, Saving Sonny finds our men not only dealing with an outside threat to them but also in internal one.

Our super badass, Luki, came away from Finding Jackie with more than two bullet wounds to heal.  Luki is suffering from PTSD over killing the young guard when he was rescuing his nephew.  Sonny is being as supportive of his husband as he can be but a professional opportunity has presented itself that he really doesn’t want to pass up.

This particular book is mostly told from Luki POV which I enjoyed.  I know PTSD doesn’t just go away after a couple of weeks/months but I thought the author did a really good job of showing some of the steps needed for recovery.  It wasn’t easy for Luki and I’m glad it wasn’t just some quick fix and he’s back to his old self in just a few days.  Actually he never is his “old self” after that but he becomes stronger and learns how to deal with the guilt he carries.

Even while battling his PTSD, Luki feels something is very wrong and that Sonny is in danger while overseas.  A classmate from Sonny’s college days, Harold Breslin, has asked him to be a part of an art tour in Europe and sweeten the deal with a guest lecture spot at the Sabelin in Paris.  Things are going well until Luki can no longer reach Sonny  by phone or email and Sonny can’t reach anybody.

In order to save Sonny, Luki has to agree to a job he doesn’t want, receive help from a past flame, and battle his PTSD…let’s just say love will make you do anything to save the one you love.

The blurb

Luki Vasquez and Sonny Bly James finally have their Hawaiian wedding, and it’s perfect, almost. But their three-phase honeymoon is riddled with strife. Luki’s status as a working badass spells discord for the newlyweds. A former informant from Luki’s days with ATFE brings a troubling message (or is it a warning?) from a Mob hit man. When Luki’s sixteen-year-old nephew, Jackie, is lured into capture and torture by a sadistic killer, the honeymoon is well and truly over.

The couple put aside their differences and focus on the grueling hunt, which takes them from leather bars to dusty desert back roads, and calls on Sonny’s deep compassion as well as Luki’s sharpest skills. Their world threatens to fall apart if they fail, but their love may grow stronger than ever if they succeed in finding Jackie—before it’s too late.

Our thoughts

3.5 – 4 Stars

Contemporary, suspense thriller, 3rd book in series

*Warning underage sexual abuse is mentioned in this story.

There are guns, bombs, murder, rescues and RV sex’n…makes for some happy reading.

If you have read the first two books in the Vasquez & James series you’ve become very familiar with our MC’s, Luki and Sunny.   We’ve watched them learn how to love and accept love.  We’ve seen them deal with death, issues from their past, betrayal, and a growing extended family; all while dealing with threats against their lives.

In Finding Jackie, Sonny and Luki celebrate their love for each other by tying the knot in Hawaii surrounded by friends and family. Of course this being Luki and Sonny wedding/honeymoon bliss doesn’t last long before a mob boss is gunning for them and they are in a race to save Jackie’s life.   The “bad guys” have decided not to attack Luki/Sonny head on instead they target Jackie, Luki’s nephew.  I’ve had a soft spot for Jackie from the first book so I was ready to go in guns blazing right along with Luki.

Jackie’s young life hasn’t been easy, even with the love and support of his brother, Josh, Kaholo, Sonny, and Luki he’s still lost in himself.  His need to figure out himself and his sexuality leads him into a trap orchestrated by a sadistic hit man.  It’s up to Luki to find and save Jackie before he can be damaged anymore emotionally than he already has.

As always with fiction you have to suspend reality because you know these things would never happen in real life but that’s also way they are so enjoyable.  The only thing I didn’t like about this story was the extra “sweet” the author added; there was so many I love you’s and honey’s, it was a bit much for me I don’t want Luki  the iceman to melt completely.

The blurb

Sonny James and Luki Vasquez are living proof that the course of love never runs smoothly. Ambushed by grief, Sonny listens to a voice singing the blues from beyond the grave. While revisiting the sorrows and failings of his past, in the here and now he puts up a wall against love. Just when Luki chips through that barricade, the couple becomes the target of a new threat from outside: an escalating and unexplainable rash of break-ins and assaults.

Thoughts of infidelity rise between them, a threat that may strain their newly mended love past its limits. To come through the trials alive and together, Luki and Sonny will have to unite against enemies who were once friends and overcome crippling hatred and overwhelming fear. If they succeed, maybe then they can rekindle the twin flames of passion and love.

Our thoughts

3.5 stars
Contemporary, suspense thriller, 2nd book in series must read in orderOk let me start with I was not ready for the beginning of Delsyn’s Blues.  Before the end of the prologue I just wanted to cry.  Oh and we find out  a lot more about Sonny’s past.  This installment in the series not only includes murder but betrayal. The second installment in the series starts with Delsyn’s recover from his kidnapping in the first book.  Before the end of chapter one Sonny has told Luki to leave and Luki is trying to deal with the separation.  But Luki comes back any way just after tragedy strikes Sonny again.  This installment takes a deeper dive into Sonny’s past demons and has a lover from Sonny’s past sniffing around that could bring an end to Sonny and Luki’s HEA.While dealing with Sonny’s past Luki is tasked with trying to protect him from a very present threat.  Sonny’s father, in name only, has brought trouble to Sonny’s doorstep.  Again the two men face their past and their fears and grow stronger as a couple.Again this is another action packed read that I really can’t say too much about because it would be a complete spoiler.

Drug abuse is talked is talked about in this story.

Loving Luki Vasquez

by

Lou Sylvre

Publisher: Dreamspinner Press

 The blurb

Reclusive weaver Sonny Bly James controls every color and shape in his tapestries, but he can’t control the pattern of his life—a random encounter with Luki Vasquez, ex-ATF agent and all-around badass, makes that perfectly clear. The mutual attraction is immediate, but love-shy Sonny has retreated from life, and Luki wears his visible and not-so-visible scars like armor. Neither can bare his soul with ease.

While they run from desire, they can’t hide from the evil that hunts them. After it becomes clear that a violent stalker has targeted Sonny, Luki’s protective instincts won’t let him run far, especially when Sonny’s family is targeted as well. Whether they can forgive or forget, Sonny and Luki will have to call a truce and work together to save Sonny’s nephew and fight an enemy intent on making sure loving Luki Vasquez is the last mistake Sonny will ever make.

Our thoughts

3.5-4 stars
Contemporary, suspense thriller

A clever little suspense thriller wrapped in an m/m romance.  This story, Loving Luki Vasquez, had some nice little plot twist and a nice little love story thrown in the mix.

Luki Vasquez is a private investigator/bodyguard with his own company.  Sonny James is a tapestry weaver living a sheltered life.  Not really two people you would put together but the chemistry worked.  They meet by chance and there is an instant connection but not insta-love (thank goodness).  They sort of dance around each other in the beginning until some young boys decide to vandalize a mutual friends home.  From there the two men are inseparable and are in a race to find the man taunting them.  Sonny has captured the attention of someone who has no problem with getting rid of “faggots” and at the same time his closest living relative, his nephew Delsyn, has gone missing.  Luki and Sonny realize later that Delsyn’s disappearance is no coincidence.   The clock is ticking for them to bring down a madman and save Delysn’s life.

Lou Sylvre takes us on a harrowing ride dealing with Luki’s past demons and Sonny’s familial responsibilities.  Along the way she shows us beauty is more than skin deep and that love can make things harder and easier at the same time.  Both men have never truly loved another and they way they deal with the ups and downs and insecurities, without the heavy angst, was a pleasure to read.  I really enjoyed both MCs they were not stereotyped by their professions.  The kind heart that Luki tries so hard to hide behind his icy persona and I get the feeling there is a lot more to Sonny than meets the eye…

It did take me a little while to get into the story, the beginning felt choppy and the POV’s changed from paragraph to paragraph at times, which was a little confusing.   But by the second have of the book I was on pins and needles reading wanting to know what would happen next do they find the madman in time, do they find Delsyn in time…  One of the things I loved was that even though Luki is supposed to be all badass he vomits when emotionally stressed and even though Sonny comes across very mild mannered he has a little badass in him as well.

I’m looking forward to the next story in the Vasquez & James series.
