Dare to Hope (All Cocks #4) by TM Smith

Date to Hope

Blurb

Tristan is the second oldest of the Brennan brothers and the odd man out. Most of the Brennan men have careers in law enforcement, but as a psychiatrist, Tristan chooses to help people in a different way. Quiet and restrained, he is content to hover in the background of his more gregarious brothers. Then he meets two men, each broken and damaged from losses beyond their control.

Gabriel Simenson is mourning his lover’s death. The random act of violence that took Gio’s life has left everyone at All Cocks reeling. The only thing keeping Gabe from drowning in misery is the friendship he’s forged with Micah, the newest model at All Cocks. He continues to struggle, and at the urging of his All Cocks family Gabe agrees to counseling with Tristan under one condition: Micah must go with him.

Micah Solo can relate to unbearable loss, having lost his leg and so much more in Iraq. The past two years he has been alone, adrift and vulnerable — the memories of war haunting his dreams, spilling over into his daily life. At All Cocks, Micah has found the acceptance he craves and the family he lost, but still he yearns for happiness and peace within.

The friendship between the three is instant, the mutual attraction evident. They circle each other, wanting more, yet unsure if it is truly possible. Is life the mundane reality they’ve each come to accept for themselves or do they dare to hope?

The All Cocks Stories is a series set within the world of online gay porn.

*Warning* Micah’s PTSD is told in detail, including flashbacks to his time in Iraq.

What did I think?

The All Cocks series consists of 4 books set in the world of gay porn. It’s blends the behind-the-scenes world of the men behind the porn stars, showing a glimpse of the mechanics of making porn, but more about the relationships of the people when the cameras aren’t rolling.

As I mentioned when I read the first few books, there is an ensemble cast of characters who appear throughout the books, including the three men who own All Cocks, their actors, and other friends. Each book focuses on a main couple, but also the characters who form the friend group. Therefore there are a lot of characters to remember. This perhaps was the biggest challenge for me – keeping the characters straight in my head, and determining the point of view for each scene in the story.

Book 4, Dare to Hope, has a slightly different feel to the earlier books. For a start the sex feels less (not that this is detrimental to the story). There is a strong focus on friendship, and that friendship forming the basis of love. Sex is almost like an after-thought. But I thought this was appropriate, given the specific situation of the three men involved – Micah who is dealing with PTSD, Gabe who is grieving, and Tristan who is grappling with balancing his feelings and his professionalism.

So although I understand the need for a slow progression, I would have liked to see the three men acknowledge their relationship a little earlier in the book. That way there would have been more on-page time of them together in their three-way relationship.

I enjoyed the banter and the dialogue. All in all, very enjoyable.

An MMM erotic short: Three by RJ Scott

Mark is finding his way in life after six years in the army. He’s always wanted to write scripts for TV, and for one show in particular, Tomorrow’s Game.

Half in lust already with the lead actor Zach, he is shocked when he ends up in Zach’s bed. Not just that, but Zach’s co-star Rob is part of the package.

Is this just hot sex or can two become three?

Coming 11 March

Excerpt

Several beers later and the conversation was flowing nicely. There was no shortage of things to talk about: Zach, an actor, Mark, a wannabe screenwriter, Rob, mostly just offering incoherent grunting as he dozed on Zach’s shoulder.

When the offer came to continue the smooth, comfortable conversation back at Zach’s house, where Rob had a room, it was a natural progression of their evening. Zach was such an easy person to talk to, and Mark’s gaydar was in confusion mode. As they talked about all kinds of things, from the show to Hollywood, to Mark’s time in the Army, there had been some flirting, Mark was sure of it, but he couldn’t understand why. Zach was the poster boy for heterosexual alpha male, but he was inserting suggestive remarks into everything they talked about and didn’t bat an eyelid when Mark talked about staying the closet in the Army.

Anyway, if this was Zach flirting, why would he be flirting with Mark?

Mark had never rated his looks; he kept himself fit, his hair was short, and he had a naturally muscled body from years of physical exercise, but he was surely not in the league of Zach Cassidy, be he gay or otherwise.

It wasn’t as if Mark had heard anything about the twenty-six-year-old actor being interested in anyone other than the guest star actresses he was seen out with. Rumor had it he was dating one of the girls who had appeared in a few episodes in season one, a short redhead with a thing for murder.

The thing was, it seemed like maybe, in Zach’s eyes, Mark was a little bit better than ordinary, as Zach pushed him up against the wall inside the front door.

Zach was close; his lips close from Mark’s. “Tell me I’m not wrong. Tell me I can kiss you?”

So much for not being gay.

Mark didn’t even answer. He reached up and twisted his fingers, as best he could, into Zach’s short hair, pulling him toward him, mumbling “Not wrong” as he opened his mouth under Zach’s.

It was overwhelmingly hot, tongues searching out the taste of beer, kisses so deep and hard they curled Mark’s toes and left him short of breath. Zach pulled back to grab Mark’s hands, pushing them above his head and holding them in place, just holding him there for a long while, leaning into him, hard and heavy and needy up against him. Before Zach began tracing a path of open-mouthed kisses from temple to ear, stopping to caress the shell of Mark’s ear with the tip of his tongue, it seemed to Mark that breathing was almost impossible.

Whining deep in his throat, he moved restlessly under the onslaught, impossibly hard and desperate for friction, grinding up against Zach to relieve the pressure. Finally, Zach moved his lips lower, focusing all his attention on the fluttering pulse point in Mark’s neck as Mark just gave in and leaned his head back against the wall, helpless against Zach’s exploring mouth. He wanted to say something, anything, but couldn’t.

It didn’t enter his head to think where Rob had gone until another mouth touched his lips even as Zach was marking the skin pulled taut at his neck. He opened his eyes to find liquid-chocolate-colored eyes inches from his. He must have looked startled; Rob blinked once, twisting his fingers into Mark’s hair and pulling his head further back to give Zach free rein on his neck, taking Mark’s lips in a heated kiss then trailing fiery touches over Mark’s high cheekbones to his ear. “Zach wants you… I want to watch,” Rob said in his sleep-deprived growly voice.

RELEASE DAY GIVEAWAY: Along Comes a Man by G.A. Hauser

Along comes a man xmas use 72Blurb

Forty year old Freddie Oli and his longtime buddy, thirty-five year old, Barron Isaac, worked in the IT business together for years. When their company was bought out, Freddie and Barron decided to alter their career direction, and open their own landscaping business.

The two older men hire an ex-marine, Dirk Jameson, to help out.  At twenty-eight, Dirk was eager to work, strong, and not to mention, gorgeous.

Although Freddie and Barron were gay, they never felt any chemistry between them, but their bond of friendship was powerful.

As Dirk begins to flirt with both men, Freddie worries that Dirk will be the demise of a good friendship and a budding business.

A strong partnership is tested as the men are faced with a handsome stud who seems to want it all.

Will this trio have a happy ending? Or will jealousy and doubt creep into their lives?

For Barron and Freddie, things were smooth sailing, until, along comes a man…

Excerpt

Dirk drank his hot coffee, resting a leg on each man, since it was tight for the three of them on the bench seat. He liked the idea of working outdoors, and even though he had a degree in engineering, the thought of being cooped up in an office didn’t appeal.

The two men who interviewed him, however, did appeal to him.

Barron Isaac, a fit, handsome man, who Dirk figured was in his early thirties, had incredible blue eyes. He wasn’t very tall, but his arms were sculpted and he had designer stubble and conservatively cut brown hair. On his initial interview, Dirk had met both men. They’d told him they had been cut loose from an IT company that had been bought out, so immediately Dirk knew they were bright and eager to start their own business.

Since the IT world had become a clutter of winners and losers, landscaping in southern California was a good alternative. And in December, the rains had come, and plants needed tending, and lawns mowing. And in the summer drought, many residents were opting for drought-resistant plants or removing sod for rocks.

Sipping his coffee, Dirk glanced at Freddie Oli as he drove. Dirk imagined Freddie was slightly older than Barron, but was, in Dirk’s opinion, the perfect older man fantasy. He had slightly graying temples, some laugh lines near his eyes when he smiled, and was also fit, and well built. Dirk couldn’t help but see the friendship these two men shared, and even when they teased each other, it was good-natured and fun.

Dirk liked them on sight.

And would love to fuck them. Both.

Neither man wore a wedding ring, no one spoke of wives or children, and up until this morning, Dirk assumed the men lived together. He wasn’t so sure about it now, now that Freddie had told Barron to let Dirk park his motorcycle in the garage. If Barron lived there, wouldn’t he have just done it?

Dirk had thought he had a read on these men when he first met them. Now he wasn’t so sure. It didn’t matter.

He could certainly work for two straight buddies.

Dirk took a look at each man’s crotch, seeing the bulge in their pants.

But it sure would be fun if they were gay.

Dirk relaxed in the bench seat, letting his knees touch each man’s leg, and smiled.

~

Barron felt the heat of Dirk’s leg on his and didn’t move away. He sipped his coffee, thinking about having a hot hunk like Dirk working with them. Maybe it was silly but the minute Dirk Jameson showed up for an interview, Barron and Freddie exchanged looks as if already hiring the handsome man on sight. Sure, they asked him the standard questions, had him fill out forms, did a quick background and credit check, but the man wasn’t a liar. Everything he had told them was true.

Fresh out of the military, marine-tough, and fucking damn handsome. Sure, it was immature for him and Freddie to hire Dirk for his appearance and power, but hell, why shouldn’t they hire him? Barron was proud to have hired a vet. He just hoped Dirk wouldn’t grow bored. This was mostly grunt work. And just as he and Freddie made the change from office and computers to outdoor and physical labor, Barron hoped doing this kind of work was something Dirk would enjoy.

Freddie parked in front of their first home. At the moment, they had a client list of only residential property. But Barron would love to build their way up to condo complexes, or better yet, hospitals and office buildings.

Freddie adjusted his ball cap and said, “Ready, boys?”

As he did, Barron could see Freddie grab Dirk’s thigh playfully, giving it a squeeze.

Dirk tossed his empty coffee cup on the floor with the other trash and said, “Let’s go.”

Barron opened his door and wondered if Dirk thought it was uncomfortable to have Freddie do that. He tried not to over think it and opened the tailgate of the truck. He hopped on and began lifting up the mower and blower, handing them to the two men standing at the tailgate.

Freddie asked Dirk, “Do you want to mow or blow?”

Barron paused to see Dirk’s reaction to that question, which obviously had a sexual innuendo.

Dirk smiled. “I’ll blow.”

Oh, God. Chills rushed over Barron’s body at the sexy smile Dirk gave Freddie.

AUTHOR & CHARACTER INTERVIEW: Claiming His Bears by Lei Carol

Today we are lucky to feature a couple of interviews. Firstly, author Lei Carol shares a bit about herself. We also have a very special interview with the three leading men – Shawn, Zander and Zerek – from Claiming His Bears.

This is book 4 in the Cascade Pack series.

Claiming his Bears C.P.4

Author Interview

This one is easy. Tell us about you. Think of it as a mini bio.

Lei: Well, I am a very avid reader. To the point of reading between 20-30 books a month, if not more. Which is a very expensive habit, as I am sure you can imagine. However, there are worse things to be addicted too.

Do you have any spare time? Is writing your only job, or do you juggle? Is sleep optional?

Lei: Sleep is very optional, except for the fact I get extremely grumpy when I don’t get enough sleep. At this point writing is my only job but who knows what can happen. As for spare time… what is spare time between, a cat, 2 dogs and 16 chickens? Of course only the cat is mine but I help take care of all the others soooo, I can claim them. LOL

When you start a new book, does it flow or is that initial chapter painful?

Lei: Usually the first chapter is the easiest. The story is fresh and the characters are all but yelling with excitement.

Have your nearest and dearest read your work? If so, were you terrified or excited to let them?

Lei: Actually no.  I was more terrified of telling them the genre that I was writing. LOL.

How often do you check your amazon ranking?

Lei: When a book first comes out I check it constantly, but that’s usually only for the first couple of days.

Are you working on anything new at the moment? If so what is it? Can we have a peek? Tease us please!

Lei: YES! I am actually working on, and almost finished with, a new story called Unlocking the Past. It is a murder mystery menage.

Here is a sneak peek at it.  Now please remember it is not edited.

Jumping into the ankle deep water causing it to splash all around him and even up into his face, giggling softly as he ignored the temperature of the water. He let himself spin in place with wide eyes only to freeze, waiting to hear the sound again.  It was becoming harder and harder to hear that sound.

With every passing day and every splash the sound was slowly fading away and all he wanted was to hear it once more. Every day he would close his eyes and try to listen for it. Sometimes he thought he could hear that sweet, musical laugh in the wind and so he would race after the sound.

Rushing to the creek to jump and splash, he was trying to keep the sound there with him but slowly with each passing day it was becoming less of a sound.  Slowly climbing up the wet muddy embankment to the little cliff, he stood looking out over the moving water. Squeezing his eyes tight as he wished with everything his young eight year old body could, just hoping and praying to hear that sweet sound one more time; promising to anyone who would listen that he would be a good boy and never ask for anything again as long as he lived.

Taking a deep breath as he took two giant steps back, he sprinted forward to jump off the little edge.  Feeling the cold water splash into his face and hair, he snapped his eyes open and started flailing his arms around as he crashing into the rocky creek with pain radiating up and down his right leg.

The cold water quickly chilling him to the bone, with tears running down his face, crying as the words started tumbling out of his mouth, begging and pleading for help, “Mommy! Oh mommy please help me…Mommy I’m hurt and I need you…Please mommy help me…”

Closing his eyes, trying to listen with his whole body to hear just the whisper of the sound before taking a deep breath to let out a scream, “MOOOOOMMMMY!”

Character interview with Shawn, Zerek and Zander.

Tell me about yourself? You know the basics… Name, age, sex, Location… phone number.. hehe

Zerek: Well I’m Zerek, the cutie here in the middle here is our mate, Shawn, and the big lug next to him is my twin Zander.

Zander: Hey! I take offense at that.

Zerek: What?

Zander: He’s not cute.

Shawn: HEY!

Zander: He’s gorgeous..

Shawn: Awe…

Zerek: Oh great… now we have to wait for them to stop kissing.

Where do you like to go when you are angry?

Shawn: When I am angry I’ve always headed into the woods. I try to find some baby animals that I can play with.

What is your biggest pet peeve?

Zerek: Mine is when Zander leaves his dirty clothes all over the place.

Zander: I only do that when I’m chasing a frisky wolf through the house.

Zerek: Uh huh. Sure.

What is your biggest fear? Who have you told this to? Who would you never tell this to? Why?

Shawn: My biggest fear is my family finding out my secret.  I’ve always had the fear of them not understanding and kicking me out of not only our pack, but our family.

Zerek: Awe babe.

Have you ever been in love or had your heart broken?

Shawn: I’m an editor, so I’d like to say I have been in love with a lot of my, as I call them, book boyfriends. As for being heart broken… well I’d rather not answer.

Is there anyone that you would kill for or have you done so? Off the record of course.

Zerek: Ummm… Can we plead the fifth?

Zander: Dude, if they remember what happened at the waterfall they already know the answer for that.

Think back to when you were a child, what is  your strongest memory? Is it a good one?

Shawn: One time, when I was a kid, I had taken off and had found this momma bear with two cubs.  It was the best six hours I had ever spent.

What sort of underwear do you wear? Or are you commando?

Zander: Shawn has this pair of itty bitty, polka dotted, yellow bikini briefs. Those are my favorites.

Zerek: Really? I love his g-strings. My favorite is the rainbow colored ones that have a strand of pearls instead of just string. Those are hot.

Shawn: Oh God, guys. I am so going to start going commando like you.  I’m so embarrassed.

Zander: Hey that’s fine too…

Zerek: Easy access baby.

What is your current state of mind?

Shawn: Exhausted, is it bed time yet?

When and where were you the happiest?

Shawn: When I am the cream filling, stuffed between a Zerek and Zander sandwich.

What is it that you most dislike?

Zerek: T.V. commercials, they drive me batty. What is your greatest fear?

Shawn: Ummm… didn’t you already ask this?

What is your greatest extravagance?

Zander: Umm…. Shawn’s underwear drawer…

Zerek: For sure… some people collect and spend lots of money on shoe’s… But for Shawn, it cute underwear. The smaller the better.

Which living person do you most despise?

Zander: Who has time for hate?

Zerek: I personally think the world needs more love…

Shawn: And more sexy time…. And more sex too.

What is your greatest regret?

Shawn: When I took off and not talking to my mates.

Which talent would you most like to have?

Zerek: We’re bear shifters and guys who can knock up our male mate… I don’t think we need any other special talents.

Where would you like to live?

Shawn: With my two, big, cuddly teddy bears.

Who is your favourite hero of fiction?

Shawn: Harry Potter… What??? I’m a nerd… Shut up, Zerek.

Zerek: I didn’t say anything.

Shawn: No, but you were thinking it.  And laughing.

Whose are your heroes in real life?

Shawn: My parents.

What is your motto?

Zander: Sometimes, you just have to roll the dice.

Zerek: It’s all about the pleasure thang.

About the book

Warning: For Mature Adult Audiences.  Contains language and actions some may deem offensive.  Sexually explicit content.  Ménage – MMM.

In book four of the Cascade Pack: Shawn has always known he wanted something different than his brothers and sisters.  He has spent his entire life trying to hide just how different he needs were, afraid they wouldn’t understand.  So desperate to protect his secret, Shawn even runs away from his family and his mates.

Zerek and Zander were amazed the day they walked into the café to meet one of their employees for the first time only to find out he was their mate.  Now they are forced to wait to claim him as well as figure out just what secret he is desperately trying to keep.

Can the bears give their mate what he needs?  Or will he run for the hills, leaving three lives shattered?

Excerpt

He couldn’t stop his chuckles from escaping at the sound of a body slamming into the hall wall with a muttered, “ouch,” before the running started again.  He tried to wipe his smile from his face as he watched the swinging kitchen door slam open only to smack into the wall and swing back toward their flustered mate.

Before Zerek could even jump to catch the door from hitting Shawn in the face, Zander raced across the room to grip the door, which caused Shawn to blush and duck his head in embarrassment.  Never had his mate looked more enticing than he did in that moment; chest rapidly rising and falling, cheeks and neck bright red.  Just the sight of Shawn was enough to cause his cock to start to fill as images flashed through his mind of Shawn tied up in the playroom, ass and thighs bright red from a spanking while his cock was plugged and bound to keep him from coming.

Opening his eyes, unsure when he had closed them, he noticed everyone was now staring at him, including the sweet wolf he was fantasizing about.  Knowing it was his turn to blush, Zerek crossed the room to gently cup Shawn’s warm cheeks.  Slowly leaning down to place a soft kiss against the minty fresh lips before whispering, “I hope you’re hungry.”

Hearing the soft whimpers escaping his mate was enough to have his bear slamming against its cage in his mind, demanding to be let out to claim his little wolf, not giving a damn they had an order from the alpha that there was to be no mating until October, he wanted his mate where the boy belonged.

“Back off, Zerek,” Zander growled.  Every word sounded as if it was a million miles away as he fought one of the hardest battles ever fought with his bear.  It felt as if his bear was breathing down the back of his neck, demanding to be allowed to mark his mate, signaling he was taken and no one could touch him.

Unable to look away from Shawn’s eyes, seeing the boy’s wolf peek out as if it was trying to answer the call of his bear, was almost enough to take him to his knees.  Trying to come up with anything that would convince his bear to behave and back off, he even tried to bribe the animal with lots and lots of honey, which seemed to do the trick.

“Honey,” Zerek heard the rough growl in his voice but didn’t care.  Taking a deep breath only to hear his bear snarl and growl in between chanting, “Mate.  Mmm, honey…mate…mmm sweet honey…no I want my mate…mmm yummy, sticky honey…I wonder what my mate’s sweet honey will taste like?

No matter what he tried his bear wouldn’t release its hold on his psyche and he was losing the battle.  It wouldn’t take much more for Zerek to lose control and shift there in the kitchen.  Not that he was afraid of his bear hurting anyone or anything like that, but if his bear fully released then he might not stop until Shawn was properly tied to him no matter who tried to stop him.

Jerking his eyes away from his mate for the first time since the boy walked into the room, he snarled at his brother.  Zander smacked him upside the back of the head, hard enough to cause his bear to shift his focus away from his mate.

“Hey, dumbass, knock it off before you scare our mate and cause his brothers to banish us.  Because trust me if that happens, you will see what my whip feels like.”

“You know how to use a whip?”

Zerek was so surprised at Shawn’s barely whispered words he stared with his mouth open.  Zerek’s bear even quit trying to get free as it was shocked as well.  Could their sweet mate be just as kinky as they were?  Zerek couldn’t wait to find out.  Shaking his head to clear the rushing sound from his ears, he noticed the whispered conversation for the first time.

“Is anyone else getting horny from watching them?” Cale whispered to everyone at the kitchen table.

“I don’t know what I want more, a hard cock or chocolate.  There’s something about Zerek and Zander growling at each other that makes me hard as nails.  Elliot?  Can we go upstairs please?  I have an itch I need you to scratch and then let’s have chocolate ice cream.”

Menage anyone?

A couple of sexy menage stories…

  • Served by Maxine Mansfield
  • The Foster Family by Jaime Samms

❅❅❅❅❅❅❅

ServedServed by Maxine Mansfield

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The blurb…

Beach volleyball player Sam Waterson knows he made a mistake–a really big one–three years ago when paparazzi interrupted his jubilant celebration with sexy Carlos Delacruz, the love of Sam’s life, and with their ménage partner Drew Eversly…and Sam blamed the public exposure on the wrong man. But fate has given him a second chance to prove his prowess on the sun-baked beach volleyball court and at loving the sensual man who has unknowingly held his heart. Can he–or Carlos or Drew–win a spot on the team? But even beyond sweating it out on the court and regaining the spot they had to forfeit three years ago, can Sam win back Carlos’s heart? Sam needs to show Carlos that he can spike and score where it counts…between the sheets.

So what did I think?

Sam (Montana or Cowboy), Carlos (New York) and Drew (California) try out for a place on the beach volleyball team for the London Olympics. More erotica than romance, there is lots of three-way sex between these gorgeous athletes.

Sam loves Carlos but has to win back his trust after doubting him years ago when they were set up and caught out having sex with Drew on the beach. Together, the three men defeat the scheming Eric and two find love with a happy friend on the side.

Maybe more sex than other action but still a nice read.

The Foster FamilyThe Foster Family by Jaime Samms

My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars

The blurb…

Growing up in foster care has left Kerry Grey with little self-esteem or hope for his future. A college dropout, Kerry scrapes by on a part-time job at a garden nursery. His friendship with his boss and working with the plants are the only high points in Kerry’s life. He’s been dating the man who bullied him at school, but when his boyfriend abandons him at a party, Kerry wanders down the beach to drown his sorrows in a bottle of scotch.

Malcolm Holmes and Charlie Stone have been together for fifteen years. Despite Charlie’s willingness to accept Malcolm’s unspoken domination in bed, something is missing from their relationship. Early one morning, they rescue a passed out Kerry from being washed away by the tide and Charlie immediately senses a kindred spirit in the lost younger man. When Kerry’s roommate kicks him out, Malcolm and Charlie invite him into their home. As Charlie and Kerry bond over Charlie’s garden, Malcolm sees Kerry may be just who they have been looking for to complete their lives. All they have to do is show Kerry, and each other, that Kerry’s submissive tendencies will fit their dynamic.

But someone is sabotaging Kerry at every turn. As he struggles to discover the culprit, he fears for the safety of his new friends. If Malcolm and Charlie cannot help, their lifelong search for their perfect third may not end with the happily ever after they imagined.

So what did I think?

This is a really interesting book to comment on because I liked the story but didn’t necessarily understand the dynamics of the relationship. However this didn’t stop me enjoying the story.

I did like the characters. I liked their ‘brokenness’. I liked the challenges faced by the younger Kerry as he deals with his broken relationship and loss of home. I liked his foster background and the way this connected him with Malcolm. I liked the struggles of the older couple, Charlie and Malcolm as they try to find the right balance in their relationship and the key part to ‘make them work’ even after all those years together.

This story wasn’t the typical menage story I was expecting. It was more focused on the emotional journey of all three men and less on the three way sex. I also found the BDSM took a back seat. This is definitely a story for anyone who likes a focus on a relationship with an age difference.

Totally fabulous menage! The Dark Horse series by Kate Sherwood…

  1. Dark Horse
  2. Out of the Darkness
  3. Of Dark and Bright

Plus there are eight short stories between these three main books.

Dark Horse (Dark Horse, #1)Dark Horse by Kate Sherwood

My rating: 4.5 of 5 stars

The Blurb…

Dan thinks about just driving, leaving the whole mess behind. He’s got enough money. He could just arrange to get his stuff and his horse shipped to wherever he’s going. Taking off is what he used to do when things got to be too much, and it worked pretty well, really.

Dan Wheeler thought he’d found lasting love and stability with his life and work partner, Justin Archer. But when Dan finds himself alone again, still working as a horse trainer for Justin’s parents, he has to find a way to accept that his perfect life is gone forever.

Then he meets billionaire Evan Kaminski, who arrives to buy a horse for his younger sister, and Evan’s lover Jeff Stevens, a horse trainer who seems to understand more than just Dan’s job. Struggling to deal with all the upheavals in his life, Dan finds himself drawn to both Evan’s mercurial passion and Jeff’s quiet wisdom. Is Dan strong enough to take a chance on new love, or would it be better—safer—for him to be alone?

So what did I think?

Part One (5 stars) of Dark Horse is primarily focused on Dan, a man who is going through an extreme emotional period in his life. His story is emotional and heart-breaking (to the point of tears as it was so easy to feel his pain). During this time, a work related matter leads to Dan meeting Evan (a billionaire) and his lover Jeff.

Part Two is focused on Dan taking a chance and getting on with his life. He starts a new job, meets new people and gets to know Evan and Jeff as well as Evan’s family.

Written in present tense (a bit strange at first but surprisingly easy to get used to), the M/M/M sexual component doesn’t begin until the very end but this book is more about the relationship development, concerns and emotions. It will be interesting to see how the relationship develops in the sequel.

Overall 4.5 stars!

Out of the Darkness (Dark Horse, #2)Out of the Darkness by Kate Sherwood

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Blurb…

Sequel to Dark Horse “It’s hard enough with two people. Throwing a third into the mix is… I don’t know, doesn’t it seem like we’re asking for trouble?” It hasn’t been easy, but horse trainer Dan Wheeler is beginning to build a new life for himself, finding his place in California with his lovers Evan Kaminski and Jeff Stevens. When things are going well, it’s spectacular: there’s affection, humor, and passion. But things don’t seem to go well all that often. Dan continues to struggle with the loss of his previous lover and sometimes doubts that he even deserves to be happy; Evan is jealous of every rival for Dan’s attention-including Jeff; and Jeff worries that he’s too old for the younger men and wonders if he should bow out completely. Despite his resolutions, Dan has grown attached to the other two men, but he’s not sure that’s enough. He knows that it hurts to be together-he needs to decide whether it would hurt even more to be apart.

So what did I think?

The first book, Dark Horse, ended with Dan, Evan and Jeff just starting out to develop their relationship. This sequel focuses on how they each handle being involved in the three-way relationship. They struggle to ensure their relationship is more than sex and set rules aimed at looking after individual needs. There is a lot of soul-searching, particularly from Dan who continues to struggle with the loss of his past lover.

Of Dark and Bright (Dark Horse, #3)Of Dark and Bright by Kate Sherwood

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Blurb…

Jeff, Evan, and Dan have been living happily together for the last two years. They still have problems, especially between Evan and Dan, but they’re mostly able to convert the interpersonal disagreements to sexual tension—and then resolve it—so nobody’s complaining.

Then Dan’s long-lost sister shows up seven months pregnant and on the run from the law, and the situation goes from complicated to overwhelming. Jeff and Evan want to help, but with Evan fearful of his own sister’s safety and Jeff struggling to keep his health issues under wraps, they’re a little distracted. As Dan’s sister struggles with her past, Evan’s seems intent on gambling with her future. With emotions and family ties pulling them in different directions, the threesome have to hold together—or the people they love may tear them apart.

So what did I think?

In this book, third in the series, the boys have been together for two years but still have to maintain a delicate balance in their relationship. Evan fights his possessiveness, Dan questions the role he plays and Jeff continues to be the glue holding the relationship together.

The story is fast-paced with story lines involving the extended group of family and friends. The series has an excellent cast of secondary characters and there is lots happening in this book.  A great end to the series!

☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ Tag Team by S.J.D. Peterson

The Guards of Folsom series

Tag Team (Guards of Folsom, #2)Tag Team by S.J.D. Peterson

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Blurb…

Following the death of their sub, the former owners of the Guards of Folsom, Robert “Bobby” Alcott and Rig Beckworth, were left to pick up the pieces as best they could. After seven years, these two Doms are ready to move on and find the boy who will complete them. Their painful past comes crashing back when they meet Mason Howard, a submissive who just weeks ago lost his Doms in a car accident.

Reeling from overwhelming grief that’s complicated by a severe social anxiety disorder, Mason can barely leave his home. When Rig and Bobby find him, he’s hit rock bottom, believing life is no longer worth living. Bobby and Rig set out to prove the younger man wrong. Fate has brought the three men together, but they’ll have to face fear and loss head on before they can all truly live again.

So what did I think?

This book was unexpected in many ways – such a powerful portrayal of grief and the effect loss has on someone not prepared to go out into the world.

From the very beginning the grief is palpable as Mason faces the trauma of losing both his Doms in one horrifying accident. Alone and suffering, Mason finally decides he can’t face the future until fate intervenes.

Mason appeared much younger than his thirties, perhaps due to the circumstances of his anxiety disorder, and he is certainly in need of care. Bobby and Rig stumble on Mason while they are on holidays and are immediately drawn to him with a strong desire to protect the fragile man.
“What were the chances these men would show up in his life when they did? What were the chances that he’d respond to them the way he had? What were the chances that he’d feel calm and safe within the presence of these men, when his entire life he’d been so afraid of strangers?”

The building of the relationship was handled beautifully with a couple of key strengths that provided a sense of realism and permanence to the bond between the three men. Firstly, the sexual elements were not rushed and secondly even Mason himself questions the reason he can move on seemingly so quickly “Was he grasping on to something that wasn’t real? Hoping to replace the irreplaceable?” There is a sense of trust and deep caring that gradually becomes more…“A connection born out of pain and loss was solidified while standing under the spray of the cascading shower, or maybe he just hadn’t realized that it had been growing stronger and more complete each day they spent together and only now comprehended the significance of their relationship.”

This book treats the Mason’s mental and emotional problems with seriousness, both Bobby and Rig insisting that Mason needs both adequate supervision (to ensure he doesn’t do anything silly) and also proper professional assistance. This is not a quick fix situation but a long term plan to ensure his full health, addressing the grief but just as importantly finally addressing the long term anxiety suffered by Mason.

The Doms were both gorgeous, fussing over Mason and being so loving. Both Bobby and Rig are just big softies at heart! I loved the way Bobby was described as being “the nurturing type, the one who cooked, fussed over dusty baseboards, and the one to tend a red ass or put salve on a flogged back.”

This is not so much a book about dominance and submission but more a story of overcoming grief and learning to love again.

It was also very special to read the author’s note. My heart broke a little as SJD (Jo) Peterson shared a little of her life with us. I do hope her experience and words of advise are able to help anyone who is suffering such loss and heartbreak.

Sub-Culture by Sage Marlowe

The Sub-Mission Series reading order:

Sub-CultureSub-Culture by Sage Marlowe

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Blurb…

When life gets on top, delving into a sub-culture may be just what it takes to keep a sinking relationship afloat

Five years after the bumpy start to their relationship, Noah and Pierce have settled well into their lives as a happy couple. The arrival of a new child should have made their matrimonial bliss complete, but the strain of raising a baby and a teenager, combined with a lot of pressure in their jobs, is beginning to take its toll.

In the midst of what already is a potentially explosive situation, Noah’s younger brother Jonah comes to stay with them, forcing Noah to face the issues he still has regarding his homophobic parents and adding to the emotional pressure he is under.

When Noah starts behaving oddly and Pierce just can’t seem to put his jealousy to rest, the cracks in their relationship become too severe to ignore any longer. They struggle to keep their sinking love afloat but as Noah craves the comfort a certain sub-culture can offer, Pierce finds himself wondering just how far he is willing to step out of his own comfort zone to save their love.

So what did I think?

I enjoy to read a story that revisits a couple and allows us to see how the relationship has developed over time. And this book is no exception. It was great to see Noah and Pierce after five years.

I was a bit doubtful when the story started with so much domesticity but I needn’t have worried – pretty quickly sex in the kitchen was on the agenda! Although I must admit surprise that they were up for kitchen sex with a teenage daughter in the house as I haven’t heard to too many kitchens with locks!

Noah and Pierce reach a turning point in their relationship. Doubts and insecurities creep in. There are secrets and lack of communication.

Once again I was surprised at Pierce’s brother Francis’ involvement and the information he keeps from his brother. “Of course he knew. It all made perfect sense. Noah could have relied on Francis to keep his secret. Pierce had never figured out whether it was the Dom or the psychologist in Francis who protected what was confided to him so fiercely. Whichever part of him it was, he would never betray the trust put into him. Not ever for the sake of saving a failing relationship.” And when it came to Noah’s submission, I wanted Francis to back right off and let Pierce take the reins!

My only slight criticism (and it is minor) was the repeated use of “nn-nn” in conversation. For some reason it annoyed me. Maybe because I’ve never actually seen it written before?

This was an excellent addition to the series.

The Blurb…

Rubbing a toppy sub, a submissive Top and a Dom with attitude together is guaranteed to send sparks flying – but what will they ignite?

Meet Tyler Kane. Ballsy and headstrong, he’s far from being the submissive type. Francis Hollister, Dom and proud owner of a BDSM club, couldn’t agree more – and yet, as Tyler carelessly suggests a bet, Francis sees an opportunity arise and decides to take him up on it.
Soon Tyler finds himself in Francis’ club and about to be trained as a sub. When Shae, the gorgeous Top Francis has assigned to teach him, doesn’t appear to be quite as dominant as his role would lead to believe and Francis turns out to be a rather versatile Dom, Tyler sees a perfect match just waiting to be made happen. Too bad though that he’s the only one who sees it. Or maybe he isn’t?

Curious to find out what happens when you rub a submissive Top, a toppy sub and a Dom with attitude together and what exactly the sparks from that explosive combination ignite, Tyler enlists the help of Pierce, Francis’ brother, and his partner Noah, and sets out on a mission.
While Tyler’s plan seems to work out astonishingly well, it seems that there’s more than one man in the club who is pursuing a hidden agenda..

So what did I think?

This story starts interestingly as Tyler enters into an agreement to train as a sub for a month, purely as a bet. Frances is a Dom who owns a club but it is Shae, a Service Top, who will be undertaking Tyler’s training. And Tyler is in for an eye opening journey! “He’d been so enthusiastic about his idea of getting an introduction to BDSM that he had completely forgotten to discuss the details.”

And the story sure does keep you on your toes! Toppy sub? Submissive Top? Plans are hatched, but who is manipulating whom?

Sometimes the story seemed a bit textbook like, providing explanations of the psychology of the submissive nature including the desire for things like flogging. Yes Tyler was being educated but sometimes I felt it would have been better to show rather than tell, or maybe just have a bit less telling. However, overall it was enjoyable tale with great characters, an interesting plot and an opportunity to visit Pierce and Noah, the characters from the first book.

I really enjoyed Sub-Mission the first book in the series, so read this without reading the blurb. This meant that I wasn’t expecting the book to take the direction it did and was a bit surprised that the story didn’t involve Tyler, the main character introduced at the beginning, falling in love. I really wanted to see Tyler find his happy ever after ending too. He does meet Connor but I was left wanting to see and know more of the two of them together.

And one last thing that seemed a bit of an unbelievable coincidence…Shae leaves London to visit San Antonio, Texas….of all the cities, in all the world….it’s the one city Tyler is from and he just happens to be there visiting too…really? (unless I missed something?)

Meet Me In The Middle by L.A. Witt

The Distance Between Us series

Meet Me in the Middle (Distance Between Us, #3)Meet Me in the Middle by L.A. Witt

My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars

The blurb…

Fool me three times…

Dale Ramsey is looking forward to his twenty-year high school reunion except for one small problem. Adam O’Connor, his old friend—and old flame.

Twice before, Adam has disappeared from Dale’s life. Once after a graduation night fling, and again after a hot reunion years later. When Adam resurfaces this time, single and on the verge of retiring from the Navy, Dale wonders if he’ll want to mend fences…and maybe tear up some sheets.

The spark between them is alive and well, but Dale resists. After all, Adam only seems to come around when his life is in flux, and Dale is through being a placeholder until something better comes along. He wants his friend back, but not if he’ll be deserted a third time.

Inevitably, though, their attempts to rekindle their friendship wind up igniting something much hotter, and stirring up emotions too strong to ignore. Making Dale wonder if he should put his heart on the line…or if this time he should be the one to walk away.

Warning: Let’s face it, Dale’s been sitting quietly (well, kind of) on the sidelines since The Distance Between Us, and he waited patiently through The Closer You Get. Dude is seriously ready for some scorching-hot action, so keep a fire extinguisher and some ice handy. These boys are gonna need it…

So what did I think?

“For God’s sake, Dale, do you think I just wanted to use you?” “I don’t know if that’s what you wanted or not,” I said. “But it’s what you did. Twice.”

Dale and Adam were best friends in school but parted immediately after their first sexual encounter which happened at graduation. They met again at their 10 year school reunion but once again, Adam leaves Dale after making him promises which he doesn’t keep. Finally 20 years after their first encounter, they meet again at the school reunion.

I enjoyed this book but not the level of the previous two in the series. I found it difficult to warm to Adam, or to forgive his treatment of Dale. I found it difficult to accept his reasons for leaving Dale each time and I found it really difficult to understand how Dale maintained his desire for Adam after so many years and so much heartache.

All that aside, it is a nicely told tale with some sizzling sex and some romantic moments, definitely redeemed by the grand romantic gesture – I LOVE big, public romantic gestures!
