BLOG TOUR and GUEST POST! Rockin’ It Forever by Morticia Knight

rockinitforever_800

The Language of Music

Longfellow said, “Music is the universal language of mankind”. Then there was seventeenth-century poet and playwright, William Congreve, who included what has now become a legendary line about music in one of his plays: “Music has charms to soothe the savage beast”. But it is Hans Christian Anderson’s quote, “Where words fail, music speaks”, that is at the heart of my book, Rockin’ it Forever.

Rockin’ it Forever picks up where the short story, Rockin’ the Alternative leaves off, so it’s important to read that one first. But in both stories, the clear theme is how music brings these two yearning souls together, because truthfully, music is the only language they speak.

When I first became a part of the What’s His Passion? imprint at Pride, it didn’t take much for me to decide on what passion I would use for my men. Music has been a big part of my life since a young age. My father was a professional musician, with an engineering career sandwiched in-between, and he encouraged me early on. Sadly, I didn’t find out until after she’d passed that it was my grandmother who was the singer of the family. Although my dad could play many instruments very well, his vocals were to be avoided!

The ups and downs of my career in the music industry also informed Aubrey’s character. For those of you familiar with the alternative rock artists and songs of the nineties, that would’ve been the time that Aubrey’s band, Falling in Stereo was at the height of their fame. That was also my most shining moment. I played in and around Hollywood from 1989 to the year 2000. My CD was out in 1997, which was right when Aubrey had his biggest hit.

When it got time for Aubrey to share some of his songs (this happens early on in the short story), it didn’t feel right not to have the lyrics. Bryan, the rock journalist who falls for Aubrey then questions his own sexuality, connects to Aubrey through both his music and lyrics. You can’t have one without the other. I couldn’t have actual music playing in the book, so I decided there needed to be lyrics in order for the readers to connect with how strongly Aubrey affected Bryan emotionally.

Aubrey is searching for his one true love, he really is. But that person can’t only appeal to him sexually or be compatible in day-to-day life – that man who he gives his whole heart to has to speak the language of music. For Bryan, music is what has always mattered to him more than anything else. He’s not searching for love, because he wonders if it’s even possible for him. When he meets Aubrey, the singer he’s idolized since he was twelve, he’s attracted to him in a way he never anticipated being that he’s always identified as straight. However, there’s such an immediate soul connection, Bryan can’t help but wonder if maybe this was what he’d been waiting for all along.

Of all the arts, I believe that music is the most powerful. When I hear a song that I love, it triggers those endorphins running around in circles in my head as they do a happy dance. How many times have you played a song to evoke a certain emotion, whether it was anger, joy or sadness? People hear a song and it immediately transports them back to a time in their life when they first heard it, or reminds them of someone or a specific event.

In the Rockin’ books, Aubrey and Bryan speak the language of music beautifully to each other. They get it. And even though they have their own ups and downs, ultimately, it’s the music that leads them to their ever-after.

GUEST POST: Morticia Knight

Today we welcome author Morticia Knight to share with us the experience of writing two series at once.

beggingtoserve_800

The Hampton Road Club (book #5)

Writing Different Series at the Same Time

I typically have at least two series going at the same time. Right now, I have three, Sin City Uniforms, The Hampton Road Club and Kiss of Leather. They’re a contemporary, Men in Uniform, a 1920’s BDSM and contemporary BDSM, respectively. Some people have asked me why I don’t just do one series at a time before moving on to the next one. I’ve only done that once, and it was with the first four books of the Gin & Jazz series. Why? Because they had cliffhangers and, truthfully, they were pretty evil ones!

But I haven’t done that since then because I have too many ideas running through my head (and written down in folders on my computer), and having two or more series going at once satisfies the need in me to get more of those stories out. (Spoiler alert: The next Sin City will be the last, then I start something completely new.) It also, in my opinion, helps to keep each installment of a series fresher. With little breaks in-between, there’s more of an urgency on my part to get back to that world. However, that can have its down sides too.

Since I have two contemporary and one historical series going, I end up with my historical always sandwiched between one or more contemporaries. Going back to a series that takes place in another time is jarring. All the slang, surroundings and actions restricted to the era I’m writing in have to be relearned in many ways. Sometimes, it’s more a matter of capturing the vibe of that time period and making sure that it flawlessly matches the rest of the series. That would be true with any series, but immersing myself in the 1920’s in this case, requires me to throw myself into a completely different zone while I’m writing.

Begging to Serve (The Hampton Road Club 5) is the latest in that series, and was particularly difficult for me this time around for a couple reasons. For one thing, as I’m on the fifth book now, all of the previous characters – Saul, the club owner in particular – have to remain consistent. I’ve been writing Saul for two years now, because he showed up originally in Gin & Jazz before he spun off into a series of his own. Also, timelines of events had to be rechecked, and all the details had to be re-verified before I could begin. The biggest challenge though, was the fact that I haven’t written anything in this series for almost a year. Book 4, Mastering Love, came out last May.

Yes, I did have a hard time getting revved back up and placing myself squarely in the 1920’s. However, I was excited to jump in and I think the break was well worth the result. Not only does Saul come back, but Masters Ned and Aaron played a significant part in this one as well. I also introduced a brand-new character, Roddy. He’s young, feisty and anxious to learn what it takes to be a Dominant man. Thankfully, Saul and Aaron are more than happy to show him, which in turn, makes sweet submissive Colin a very happy boy. *wink*

Excerpt from Begging to Serve

Colin couldn’t stop staring at the handsome man that Aaron and Ned had brought with them back to the club. Was Roddy a Sir or Master? He certainly seemed like one. But he was definitely new to Hampton Road – that much was clear. Colin swallowed hard as an awful revelation came to him. If Roddy was really going to become a part of Hampton Road, he’d have to have his picture taken with naked men so he couldn’t go to the police and tell on them all. As far as he knew, he was the only who hadn’t been made to do that. Saul had said it could wait until he found his right man. Colin scowled, narrowing his eyes at the horrible thought that it wouldn’t stop Roddy from having to get his picture taken. He glanced up to see a startled expression on Ned’s face right as they all reached the study.

“Colin?”

Heat filled his face. He didn’t want the nice Master to think he was mad at him or any of the other men. “Yes, Sir?”

Ned had opened the door and gestured for him to go inside along with the others. “Why are you upset?”

His grandmother had taught him not to lie, but he never would anyway. Dishonest men were mean and unloved. The ones who’d taken his grandmother’s house away from him after she’d died were liars and cheats. He refused to be like them.

“I don’t want Master Roddy having his photograph taken with any naked submissives.”

Everyone stopped where they were, the room filled with silence.

Aaron finally spoke, his brow furrowed in seeming bewilderment. “Oh? I thought you wanted him to stay.”

Colin inhaled a deep breath. Sometimes things in life were hard to do, like when he’d had to work at the bathhouse and fend off the advances of horny men. But this was something important to him personally, and he wouldn’t miss out on it because he was embarrassed. Roddy was more than young and handsome. He seemed like a happy, nice man who’d been concerned over him even though they’d just met. Colin could picture himself being alone with Roddy and not being scared.

“I do, Master Aaron, Master Ned.” He locked eyes with a visibly amused Roddy. “And I know it’s none of my business, but I like Master Roddy and I don’t want any man touching him or him touching them either.”

Roddy broke out in a lop-sided grin, holding his gaze before switching it to Ned and Aaron, both standing near Colin. None of them had moved very far into the study yet.

“Well, gentlemen. I’m agreeable to Colin posing with me if you are.”

“Uh…” Colin twisted his hands, biting his lip. The heat under his skin burned hotter. What have I gone and done?

There was another silence as both Ned and Aaron appeared pained, exchanging glances with each other.

“Is there a problem?” Roddy still seemed quite pleased with the turn of events. “It sounded to me as if he was unattached.”

Aaron finally cleared his throat, running a hand across the top of his head. “It’s not that, it’s just that…” Aaron glanced over at him. “Colin? Would you be more comfortable waiting downstairs while we discuss this with Roddy?”

Colin pressed his lips together and clenched his fists, anger rising up to replace his embarrassment. “No, Sir. I wouldn’t. This concerns me and I think I have a right to make my own decisions. Forgive me, Sir. But I’m not a child.”

Javier entered with the doctor, appearing as if he was about to speak. Instead, he halted in the doorway, confusion passing over his face. At last, he turned to Aaron.

“Sir?”

Ned let out a long sigh as he moved to the bar cart. “Gin, anyone?”

Aaron rolled his eyes then nodded. “I can’t believe it, but I’m going to have to say yes.” Aaron regarded Javier. “Is Saul here this evening?”

Colin frowned. That’s not fair. He couldn’t deny Saul anything and he was sure Aaron knew that.

“He’s in the library working on some correspondence. Should I fetch him?”

“Dear God, yes.”

Colin glanced over at Roddy, who’d taken a seat on a red velvet settee. Roddy winked and patted the cushion next to him. Colin scurried over before Aaron or anyone else could say anything. He plopped down next to Roddy. It was difficult not to sit too close to him, because even though he was dirty and mussed up, Roddy smelled so good and manly.

I’ve been almost naked here before. Maybe all the way naked would be okay?

While collecting vast amounts of vintage gay pulp novels and mood rings, Sean whiles away the hours between dropping the f-bomb and pursuing the kama sutra by channelling the long lost spirit of John Wayne and singing along with the soundtrack to “Chicago”.

A long-time writer of complicated haiku, currently Sean is attempting to learn the advanced arts of plate spinning and soap carving sex toys.

Building Bonds:

buildingbonds_800This is book one in the Kiss of Leather series, see the full series listing here

Kyle’s a natural sub who builds dungeon furniture, yet has no interest in BDSM. It takes a hunky Dom to show him just what he’s been missing.

After Kyle’s partner of five years leaves him for another man on the night of their housewarming party, the shy, early-thirties carpenter needs to do a major reassessment of his life in addition to raising some serious cash. With no one to help him pay the lease on his Los Angeles condo, he worries how he’ll survive. His best friend sets up a meeting with one of the Doms and partners at Kiss of Leather, a gay BDSM club being built as a premier destination for those who want the best of the best.

Master Gavin not only wants the best—he demands it. When he meets Kyle, he assumes that part of the builder’s reticence to share anything personal with him must be due to his experiences with an abusive former Master. Not one to back down from a challenge, Gavin determines to break through the walls surrounding the beautiful man he can’t get out of his mind. He’s hopeful that once he convinces Kyle to sign an initial contract, Kyle might be the first sub to open up his heart.

Misunderstandings and accusations almost destroy everything between them before they have a real chance to begin. However, the true obstacle becomes not only whether Kyle will embrace BDSM as a lifestyle, but also whether he can handle a full-time D/s relationship with a big, bad, scary Dom who’s as sexy as hell.

EXCERPT & GIVEAWAY: Held Hostage by Morticia Knight

Held Hostage

by Morticia Knight

Book #4 in the Sin City series

Blurb

SWAT officer Cole can handle just about anything, until he rescues Brett – a man who makes him question all he’s ever believed about love.

As a member of the Las Vegas Police Department’s SWAT team, Cole has seen his fair share of danger, but he’s never taken a chance on love. He’s willing to have some fun when the mood strikes him, but he’s married to the job. Called in on a hostage situation, Cole is prepared for anything and everything… except for the brave and beautiful Brett.

Brett has been burned before, most recently by Officer Parker McLean. He’s hoping to settle down in Vegas, perhaps find someone he can build a life with. The last thing Brett’s looking for is another man in uniform. But when he meets Cole, there’s an attraction that can’t be denied. Still, he hadn’t expected to fall for the chiseled alpha.

What begins as nothing more than two people experiencing a great night together spirals into something far deeper. But will Brett be able to handle the stress that comes with having a lover who constantly puts his life in jeopardy? And can Cole risk his heart on an everyday hero, or will the job he knows so well remain his top priority?

Excerpt

Brett had already grabbed both of them a beer and had brought it straight to the bedroom. Instead of jumping him the minute they’d entered the apartment, Cole had simply followed behind, eyeing him, as Brett had moved through the motions of being a good host and getting comfortable. He wasn’t going to stop and analyze why a man who’d just told him the night before that he didn’t do relationships had shown up unannounced at his job and was once again in his bedroom less than twenty-four hours later.

“Stop.”

Brett let go of the tie that he’d half unknotted already. He’d already hung his suit coat in the closet and had toed off his loafers then pushed them out of the way over by the dresser.

“How important is that tie to you?”

Brett glanced down at the royal blue silk neck accessory that had an elegant silver paisley design woven into the fabric. He liked it. Liked it a lot even. But was it important? Not really. He’d purchased close to a hundred ties since he’d been employed by Jon Martin. He wore one every day and preferred to have on the most recent seasonal styles when he went to work. It had no significance beyond that.

“Not important at all.”

Cole stepped toward him and Brett’s heartbeat accelerated. Cole reached down to finish untying the knot then pulled one end, sliding the thin strip of fabric out from under his collar. Cole wrapped the ends around each of his large hands then snapped them. It went taut. It was strong. Brett couldn’t wait to find out what it would feel like when Cole bound him with it.

Blurb:

Officer Shawn Everly patrols the Strip and one night, fireman Trent Marshall saves him when danger strikes. But it’s still uncertain whether Trent can save himself from getting his heart broken by Shawn.

The party never ends on the Las Vegas strip but neither does the danger. Officer Everly is new to the beat, having recently relocated to Vegas from Los Angeles. Foot patrol on the Strip is a demanding assignment because he’s up close and personal with the public. But what he’d really like to do is get up close and personal with Station 32’s hunky fireman, Trent Marshall.

Trent has been a fireman for over ten years and is dedicated to his job. He’s built tough and is a no-nonsense man of few words. At a local blood drive, Trent meets the handsome new officer on foot patrol but won’t let himself get too close. He’s lost love before when his policeman lover was killed in the line of fire.

During an emergency, Trent’s over-protective instincts kick in when he believes Shawn is in harm’s way. He ends up embarrassing and angering Shawn in front of their fellow officers, which seems as though it will end any hope of Trent having a chance with the young man he can’t push from his mind. Shawn can’t decide whether he wants to punch or kiss Trent. Kissing wins. Once they spend some time together away from the stresses of their jobs, they find that they’re not just compatible—they’re combustible.

But Trent can’t seem to accept that there are hazards that come with working in law enforcement. Right as they’re discovering how much they mean to one another, the danger escalates on the Strip. The underground vigilante group, The Citizens Against Immorality, have raised the stakes. Will Shawn and Trent be their next targets?

Excerpt:

He noted the startled look on Shawn’s face as he tugged at the hem of Shawn’s shirt while simultaneously unbuttoning the top of his shorts with one hand.

“Help me out.”

Shawn nodded again with a somewhat dazed expression and pulled the tee over his head as Trent yanked his shorts down. He wrapped his arms around Shawn’s thighs to keep him from tumbling over, manipulating him the way he needed him. Glad that Shawn had left his boots in the entryway, he was able to bring the dusty socks along for the ride as he removed the remainder of Shawn’s clothing. At last Shawn was naked.

The way he should always be in my home.

If he hadn’t already been sporting an erection of steel, the thought of Shawn’s constant nudity would have done it. He stood, noting the light blush across Shawn’s torso, in his face. His chest rose and fell rapidly. But it was his hard rosy crowned cock that drew Trent’s gaze. He was average length, but thick and gorgeous. Moisture leaked from the tip, even as it seemingly twitched of its own accord. Trent couldn’t keep his hands off.

Shawn drew in a sharp breath as soon as Trent encircled his stiff column of flesh. He licked the side of Shawn’s neck, tasting the salt of his dried sweat. As he softly stroked him, he wanted nothing more than to bend Shawn over the end of the bed and plunge into his sweet ass, but he would take his time. They still had the rest of the day and evening, it was early yet, and he planned on savoring their first sexual experience together

Since she loves several genres, you may find your heroes in a contemporary, historical, paranormal or sci-fi setting. Secret Fire (Uniform Encounters 5)

by Morticia Knight

Cover Artist: Posh Gosh

Publisher: Totally Bound

The Blurb

Police officer Zach and Fire Marshal Daryl would be perfect together—if they would ever quit fighting long enough to find out. A devastating fire and the secret behind it almost keeps them from getting what they really need—each other.

Mesa police officer Zach is a fun-loving guy. Now that he’s hit the big three-oh, he’s looking to stop the hook-up train and find someone he can get serious about. When a mutual friend suggests Fire Marshal Daryl, Zach assumes he must be joking. The surly marshal has given cranky a new meaning. It’s unfortunate, though, since he is one fine-looking man.

Daryl has sworn off relationships ever since he caught his ex-partner cheating. He’s always taken everything in life seriously—from jobs to relationships—and is afraid he might be alone in that regard. Certain he can’t risk love again, he panics when he sees his secret crush Zach approaching him at a police versus firemen softball game. He’s nervous, as he is socially challenged with a tendency to blurt out the wrong things. It gets worse when he realises their shared buddy gave Zach a push. He assumes that Zach is only talking to him out of pity.

Zach has been pissed off at Daryl ever since they got into a verbal sparring match at the park. Yet, when Daryl comes to his aid during an explosive fire, Zach wonders what secrets might be hidden beneath the layers Daryl has built to protect himself from the world—and love. A night of passion turns into the possibility of something more as they struggle to find their way to one another. An Excerpt

Daryl picked at the blanket, relieved that Zach had enjoyed it, but there was still something nagging at him.

“What?”

Daryl glanced up to see Zach staring, his lips pursed.

“I know you, Daryl. What’s bothering you?”

Daryl cast his eyes down.

“Daryl, look at me. Talking, remember?”

He met Zach’s eyes again. “Yeah, we should talk about this. At one point when I put the ice on you, you yelled for me to stop. I wanted to keep going anyway because I knew what the pay-off would be.”

“You’ve had that done to you before?”

He frowned. “No, I just figured the sensations would be incredibly intense.”

“Yeah. That’s for sure.”

“But what I’m getting at is that I kept going and you had no way of stopping me since I had you tied up. I don’t want to go too far, or do anything that you hate. I think we should have an agreement as to how I would know to really stop if you wanted me to.”

He watched as an expression of understanding crossed Zach’s face.

“Oh, my God. You want me to have a safe word? No way. I thought you said you weren’t a Dom.”

Daryl scowled at him. “This has nothing to do with being a Dom or anything like that. It’s about you feeling comfortable with me so that you can relax and enjoy yourself. It’s about you knowing there’s always a way to stop me even if you can’t physically do it. I think that would enhance things between us even more.”

Zach rolled onto his side and moved in to kiss Daryl. It was soft and sensual, and Daryl thought he might be able to happily drown in it. Zach broke their connection and rubbed his nose against Daryl’s. He drew back enough so that Daryl could see the expression in his eyes.

“I…” Zach swallowed as if he had just caught himself. “You’re an amazing guy. I’m very lucky to have you in my life.”

Daryl grunted. “I’m the lucky one. However, I’m serious about this. Think about what word you would use and before I tie you up again I want to know what it is, okay?”

“Yes, Master.” Zach snickered.

“Knock it off, will ya?”

“You’re not the only one who likes to tease.”

About The Author

M/M Erotic Romance author Morticia Knight enjoys a good saucy tale – after all, who doesn’t? Since she loves several genres, you may find your heroes in a contemporary, historical, paranormal or sci-fi setting. One of her passions is bringing people’s fantasies to life on the page, because life is too short for even one boring moment. Her stories are volcanic in heat, deep in emotion, and sprinkled with doses of humor.

When not indulging in her obsession for books, she loves the outdoors, film and music. The Pacific Northwest is the ideal spot to enjoy both hiking and beachcombing. Once upon a time she was the singer in an indie rock band that toured the West Coast and charted on U.S. college radio. She now resides on the northern coast of Oregon, where the constant rain and fog remind her of visits to family in England and Scotland when she was a child.

She is currently working on the Gin & Jazz series about the glitz and glamour of 1920’s Hollywood and additional installments of the Uniform Encounters series, with a new series about those luscious men in uniform coming out later this year.
