Never The Perfect Moment

by

K-Lee Klein

The blurb

Bryan Monroe has always catalogued his life in terms of moments—right moments, wrong moments, perfect moments. But when his best friend and partner on the police force, Chrys Delos, is shot in a raid gone bad, it’s one of the worst moments of Bryan’s life.

Bryan’s been secretly in love with Chrys for years, and the shooting is a wake-up call that it might be time to tell Chrys the truth. The problem is, Bryan’s never been with a man before, so in addition to worrying about Chrys’ injuries, he’s an indecisive wreck over the future.

But with the help of two unlikely matchmakers, Bryan knows it’s time to find the courage, and the perfect moment, to tell Chrys exactly how he feels…

Our thoughts

4 stars

This is a great little short to get you out of a book slump.  Two cops. Best friends. One gay.  One straight.  As a ‘gay for you’ read it felt quite real.  We start the book where Bryan admits he has feelings for his best friend and cop partner Chrys, so we don’t go through the whole ‘coming to terms’ with it drama.  I loved the angle of this story – when is the perfect moment for Bryan to tell Chrys he loves him?  He desperately needs to tell Chrys how he feels but it’s never the right time.  When Chrys is shot in the shoulder and is recuperating at home, Bryan doesn’t tell him.  He kisses him instead.  Perfect moment.

“I’d have a lot of regrets.  Just because I haven’t been with a man before doesn’t mean I can’t be.  Do you want to know what I was thinking about earlier, you know, when you kissed me?”

“Hopefully kissing me again?”

Bryan moaned as he remembered.  “Throwing you against the wall.  Kissing you until you couldn’t breathe.”

Grab a cuppa and enjoy a lovely, full of emotion short read.

The blurb…

Nate Bard is at his wit’s end. There’s something living—or not living, as the case may be—in his house, and if he ever wants to sleep again, it needs to go. Ever the skeptic, Nate balks at his sister’s suggestion of bringing in a psychic, but after another sleepless night, he’s desperate.
Enter Isaac Lane, the hot psychic who immediately senses both the ghost and the homeowner’s doubts.
Within minutes of Isaac’s arrival, weird things start happening. Though Nate hasn’t had a clue what’s been making this ghost so restless, now it seems the ghost is bent on getting the two men together. And neither Nate nor Isaac is able—or willing—to resist.

So what did Mishyjo think?

Ever since Nate’s boyfriend moved out, strange things have been happening in his house.  He is finally convinced to call in a psychic.  Enter Isaac.  Suddenly the sexual attraction between the two is overwhelming.  Though Nate is highly skeptical of psychics and Isaac wishes to remain the consummate professional, the aphrodisiac effect being caused by the ghost is overwhelming.

At only 31 pages the story was a bit rushed but it worked well.  It was a interesting take on the lonely ghost theme.  Both MCs were likable and believable.  I would like to have seen more of them together as a couple without the ghost’s supernatural sexual energy.  I would also like to have seen what happened with the ghost once he brought the two men together.

Between Love and Honor + The Courage to Love

This review is of two books which follow the story of David Harrison. The first, Between Love and Honor, is a short story and is part of the Dreamspinner Press Bittersweet Dreams series.

Bittersweet Dreams, stories of M/M romance with nontraditional endings. It’s an unfortunate truth: love doesn’t always conquer all. Regardless of its strength, sometimes fate intervenes, tragedy strikes, or forces conspire against it. These stories of romance do not offer a traditional happy ending, but the strong and enduring love will still touch your heart and maybe move you to tears.

The second story, The Courage to Love, picks up David’s tale as he meets Bernard and needs to overcome his fear if they are to find happiness together.

❅❅❅❅❅❅❅

Between Love and Honor

Between Love and Honor

by E.E. Montgomery

The Blurb...

It’s 1914 and David looks up from his Post Office counter to see the man of his dreams. Carl is everything he’s ever wanted, but Australia has laws against ‘deviants’ and the two men must be circumspect. When World War I breaks out, Carl tries to enlist but is rejected. People see his delicate features and stature and assume he’s ‘less than a man’. He’s scorned for not doing his duty while David is applauded for serving his country at home. Public condemnation turns violent, and Carl and David are torn between love and honor.

So what did I think?

This story had a true sense of time and place, capturing the era and the attitudes beautifully . The time is 1914 and David & Carl are dealing with their growing love for one another in a time when their love was definitely not understood, and also dealing with the impact of the war.

I knew this story was bittersweet going into it and almost read it reluctantly, knowing I was setting myself up for heartache. It is only a short story but managed to really draw me in, leaving me with a feeling of sadness and most definitely wanting to keep following David’s story.

Somehow I think it makes it easier to read these Bittersweet series stories when you know there is another book on the horizon. In this case it is The Courage To Love which follows David’s story as he returns from the war.

The Courage to Love

by E.E. Montgomery

The blurb…

Warning: This blurb is slightly spoilerish if you haven’t read the first book yet so skip to the review section if you don’t want to find out what happened!

In 1915, after his beloved Carl died from a vicious beating, David Harrison enlisted in the Army and went to war. He returns home to find a world seemingly unchanged, while he will never be the same. At Mrs. Gill’s boarding house, he meets Bernard Donnelly, a young man suffering the aftereffects of his own war experiences. David finds himself increasingly attracted to Bernard, but that terrifies him. He blames himself for Carl’s horrific death and fears he isn’t strong enough to lose another love to violence.

Bernard needs David to help him face each day and find a way they can be together without stigma—and without putting them in legal and physical danger—but David clings to his idea that the only way to keep a lover safe is not to have one. His fears threaten to destroy everything, unless he learns that sometimes the risk is worth it and finds the courage to love.

4 stars

So what did I think?

David’s story started in Between Love and Honor, where David met and fell in love with Carl but they were not destined to have a future together. David is devastated at the loss of his lover and holds himself responsible. The Courage To Love picks up his story once he returns from the horrors of the war.

As with the first story, this book had a wonderful sense of time and place and appeared to reflect what it was like to live in Brisbane in the period after the war– the attitudes, the way of life, the hardship, the illness…

This is a story of fear of loving. And David’s fear is understandable due to what he’d been through– the death of his lover, his guilt, the war experience, his own mother’s attitude. The result is that his love for Bernard meant he kept him at arm’s length, afraid to get too close.

It was a moving story with wonderful characters– I loved Mrs Gill– but I do admit to wanting just a touch more of a physical relationship between David and Bernard. I know that their level and amount of intimacy was appropriate for the story but I couldn’t help but hope.

And after the tears of book 1, thank goodness David got his happy ending!

The blurb:

Jake is on a much-needed vacation when he receives a desperate call from Alan, his former boyfriend. Against his better judgment, Jake comes to Alan’s aid. But when the men get stranded in the middle of nowhere, Alan is determined to get to town before the sun sets rather than spend the night in the car. Unfortunately, they have to cut across private property to do it. Since it’s trespassing, they could get arrested—or surrounded by a bunch of cowboys hell bent on teaching the trespassers a lesson.

Thankfully, a muscular, stunning cowboy named Colton shows up to save the day. But he’s not about to let Jake off easy. It seems there are still a few lessons to be learned, and it looks like they might involve leather, some handcuffs, and a suspiciously high, padded trunk..

So what did Robyn think?

I loved the characters in this one.  Jake was a submissive at heart but he was also a bit of brat. His ex-boyfriend Alan was hilarious in a douchebucket way but I loved him regardless.

Colton?  Well he was large and imposing and his barn would probably scare most people.  But not Jake, he took to it like a duck to water.

So if you like a bit of D/s with an implied HEA and a quick one to get you in the mood, then look no further.

So grab a cuppa, (or a wine 🍷) and enjoy this kinky little short.

Cleary Palit

Cleary Palit

by Zahra Owens

The blurb…

Edward “Ted” Cleary and Cazimir Palit have shared everything for eight years. Well, almost everything. They own a successful business together, share a house in West Hollywood, and never travel anywhere without each other, but they’ve never slept in the same bed.

There’s one more thing Ted hasn’t shared with Caz. Ted has a mother, sister, and brother in Atlanta Caz has never met. With good reason. They threw Ted out when he wouldn’t “change his ways,” and he’s never looked back. When Ted is rejected all over again, Caz steps up and proves he isn’t the superficial man Ted always took him for, and Ted’s long-hidden feelings might finally be returned.

So what did I think?

Cleary Palit is the first story of the package and made a nice start to the collection. I enjoyed the story of long-time business partners Ted and Caz. The men have worked and lived together for years and Ted has pinned for the unattainable Caz. He doesn’t think he’s in Caz’s league or Caz’s type. It takes a family situation where Ted needs support for both men to finally start facing their feelings.

This story provided a bitch of a sister (award winning on the bitch-stakes really), lots of family confrontation and an all-the-way happy ending. It was an interesting romance– not hugely hearts-and-flowers– it’s more about showing feeling with actions. Our hero Ted isn’t totally gorgeous, his body isn’t fabulous, he’s a nerd and can’t see a thing without his glasses. I wanted to shake him to stand up for himself at the beginning of the story but he’d endeared himself by the end.

The Way Things Turn Out

The Way Things Turn Out

by MA Ford

The blurb…

After a serious crash during testing, sports car driver Alan accompanies his injured teammate, Nathan, to the hospital, promising his boss he’ll stay until Nathan’s next of kin can be reached.

Former F1 test driver Nathan was a recent addition to the team, and he and Alan were not on the best of terms. Waiting for Nathan to regain consciousness gives Alan time to think back over the recent races and the ups and downs of their relationship.

Even when Nathan wakes up, Alan remains by his side at the hospital. Nathan is still keeping secrets and needs help more than he’s willing to admit. If they can trust each other, it might open the door to an attraction both assumed was one-sided.

So what did I think?

I’ve got a real soft spot for the books by this author. I think I must be a closet motor sports fan!

It took a little while to settle into reading this comfortably– getting into the flow of the first person present narration, the flashbacks and Alan providing his back story– but once things got going, I really liked it.

It is not surprising that the author has a background in the racing scene due to the level of detail provided. She provides a sense of the lifestyle and does provide information on how the sport works, mentions various tracks and famous drivers but this serves to give the book a realistic setting.

This is a coming-out combined with sort-to-enemies-to-lovers theme – there’s nothing like an accident to bring true feelings to the surface.

Branded

Branded

by Bru Baker

The Blurb…

When a would-be assassin sneaks into the citadel disguised as a servant, the king requires that all servants who work in the castle be branded with the royal crest for easy identification. Prince Coren is powerless to fight the edict, but he refuses to allow his personal advisor and secret lover Brannir to suffer alone. Coren shows his devotion by wielding the brand to mark Brannir himself, even though he fears it will change their relationship. He’s prepared for resentment, hurt, and anger–every outcome but the one he receives: unconditional love.

So what did I think?

This is the third story in the DSP Daily Dose Mended anthology. It was short but surprisingly enjoyable. I say ‘surprisingly’ because I’m not usually a big fan of fantasy/historical worlds but this one really worked for me.

The story takes place over one night as Corin needs to brand his servant/lover. I could feel Corin’s pain at having to perform the task and admired Bran’s courage due to his love for the other man. I also liked Finnick, the guard, who was so understanding of their situation and amusing.

Deep Water

Deep Water

by Coral Moore

The blurb…

Mario Guzman is trying out for the swim team, his ticket to paying his way through college. When he meets Jordan Lewis, an outspoken writer for the school’s paper, he considers coming out even though he’s been very private about his sexuality all his life.

Violence intended for Jordan takes Mario out of consideration for the team and threatens his best hope for an education. He lashes out when Jordan tries to help him in his time of need. Eventually Mario regrets driving Jordan away, and his need to apologize takes him to the scene of the attack, where he confronts his pain and terror. This time Jordan is there to help him face the biggest obstacle in his path.

So what did I think?

I liked this story despite not being entirely sold on the attraction between Mario and Jordan which result pretty much in insta-love. But it was still a nice short and sweet story.

Total Immersion

Total Immersion

by Ellis Carrington

The blurb…

Evan Stanton is in over his head. Injured from a fall on campus, he’s let his boyfriend talk him into a senior year total immersion trip—two weeks abroad—only his boyfriend ends up dumping him shortly before takeoff. Evan gets on the plane anyway, but he’s lost his hope and added to his pain.

Chris Bale decided to spend his senior year of college clearing his head after breaking up with the girl he’s dated since high school. He finds himself on a flight to Istanbul next to a surly kid with piercings and guyliner who couldn’t be more his opposite. They strike up a friendship anyway, and as they make their way across a foreign land, Bale realizes he’s too immersed in Evan to let go.

So what did I think?

This short story was lots of fun. I think it might be the first romance I’ve read set in Istanbul so a plus there for originality!

This is the story of poor Evan who starts a tour to Turkey feeling pretty down. He’s just been dumped by his boyfriend plus he has chronic pain from an injury months before. Enter, Bale, the perfect guy to befriend him and become is room-mate. Bale has broken up with is girlfriend and takes Evan under his wing.

It was a sweet story with moments of humour and some little surprises from straight-boy Bale who’s not afraid to jump into a sexual relationship with Evan.

Series review: Kinky Quickies by Kim Dare

This series is made up of three relatively short stories – perfect when you just want a little dose of light BDSM!

Kinky Quickies

  • Better Than Sexbook #1
  • Differentbook #2
  • Making It Count book #3

❅❅❅❅❅❅❅

Better Than Sex (Kinky Quickies, #1)

Better Than Sex

by Kim Dare

The Blurb…

Brody has been admiring the new-guy at the engineering firm where he works for the last six months. Wallace is all the things Brody isn’t—confident, stunning, sex on legs, oh, and straight. Brody is resigned to considering working alongside Wallace the highlight of his week and fantasizing about Wallace the full extent of his sex life, but apparently Wallace has other ideas.

The moment he joined the firm, Wallace knew he’d have trouble keeping his hands off Brody. In an effort to stay professional at work he’s kept his sexuality to himself, but that’s about to change. When he hears Brody say that seeing the latest project leave the premises is better than sex, Wallace knows he has to take action. It’s time someone taught Brody how good sex can be—especially when it’s served up with a generous helping of leather.

So what did I think?

Imagine lusting after the ‘straight’ guy at work for months and then finding out he was just waiting for the project to end so that he could focus on what he really wanted– to open your eyes to your truly submissive nature. And it doesn’t take much for Brody to realise that Wallace is absolutely right.

“In that moment, he kne that Wallace really could do anythingwith him–not because he was bigger or stronger, but because Brody would simply let him.”

Cute little quickie with some hot sexiness going on. 3 stars

Different (Kinky Quickies, #2)

Different

by Kim Dare

The blurb..

Matthew and Stuart have been dating for more than five months and Stuart thinks things are going well—right up until the moment Matthew suggests they try something different, the kind of different that involves bondage, spanking and leather.

Matthew’s been building up to making this suggestion for weeks, dropping subtle hints and hoping Stuart won’t completely freak out at the mention of kink. Now, with Matthew’s desires out in the open, all he can do is hope that introducing something different will make their relationship perfect rather than destroy it completely…

What did I think?

I liked the uniqueness of the situation. Two men in an established relationship where one needs to work up the courage to find out whether the other is open to ‘doing something different one night’? And no, Matthew wasn’t talking about taking Stuart out to try some sushi! 🙂

“I do enjoy a little bit of leather now and again,” he admitted.
Casual enough? Too casual? Clear enough to make himself understood? Too likely to make Stuart run for the vanilla flavoured hills?

This is very light BDSM as Matthew shows Stuart what he wants out of their relationship and shows him that he is not like Stuart’s ex.

3.5 stars – it was nice to see the lighter side and focus on the difficulty of broaching a potential delicate topic! 🙂

Making It Count (Kinky Quickies, #3)

Making It Count

by Kim Dare

The blurb…

Duncan’s wanted to do a scene with Toby ever since he met him in their first study group of the year, but when Toby failed to flirt back, or pick up on a single kinky hint, Duncan knew he had no choice but to back off. He always thought that Toby would be interesting if he ever came out of the kinky closet—but it never even occurred to Duncan that he’d suddenly find the boy standing on the doorstep of the club he runs.

Toby’s been fascinated and intimidated by Duncan in equal measure for months. When his flat-mate bails out on a kinky play-date with Duncan at the last moment, Toby’s need overtakes his nervousness. Before he has time to think twice, he’s there, offering himself up as a replacement sub for the night.

This might be the only chance Toby has to fulfill all his fantasies surrounding Duncan—and he’s determined to make it count.

So what did I think?

This is the perfect story for those wanting to explore something a little different – not too kinky, but an interesting start as Toby has to prove how much he wants to spend some time playing with Duncan.

Duncan usually plays with Mike, his flatmate, but Mike can’t make their regular appointment so Toby goes in his place. Inexperienced, he doesn’t really know what he’s agreeing to.

A little bit of voyeurism starts the scene as Toby is left to kneel before a closed front door to show Duncan just how far he is willing to go.

3 stars for this little quickie.

★★★½

The blurb…

Tiger-shifter Grio has one job, locating dormant tiger-shifters and introducing them to the world of Saffron Tigers. When he finds Professor Phoenix Lamoure, he soon discovers that Headquarters got a couple of key points wrong—Phoenix isn’t actually a professor, but he is Saffron Tiger royalty, a member of the lost royal line.

Phoenix didn’t have things easy growing up. His mother spent most of her life in a mental institution, and he spent his formative years in foster care. When a stranger approaches and tries to unearth his family history, Phoenix becomes wary. And when the stranger actually kidnaps him, all bets are off!

Can Phoenix ever believe what Grio has to tell him? Or will he be forever convinced that he’s as crazy as his mother?

So what did Robyn think?

There was a lot going on in this short story and it was very fast paced. Phoenix is a long lost prince of the tiger shifter line, but he doesn’t know it.  It’s Grio’s job to show him who he really is and train him how not to shift in public because who would want a wild tiger roaming the city streets?  What neither man expected was to find their ‘mate’.  And mate they did.  For short story their were quite a few sex scenes, whilst short were still fairly hot.
So if you like your shifters and have a spare hour give this one a go.

Hope you enjoy!

Deirdre O’Dare

The blurb…

This title is part of the Purrfect Tales AmberPax™ Collection.

Although veterinary technician Carlton is violently allergic to cats, he loves them with an undying passion, enough to tolerate miserable symptoms to keep working with the felines in the San Maribal Zoo. The cheetahs especially fascinate him. Then he meets a mysterious stranger who is evasive about why he’s in the zoo after hours, and nude! This man tells Carl there’s a cat inside him wanting to get out. That sounds really crazy, and the suggested way to make the shift happen sounds even crazier—but exciting.
Zyl is a member of the ancient shifter tribe, or Were-Kind. His people are working to enforce humane treatment of animals and save endangered species. Hearing of a planned raid by an extreme animal rights group to free the denizens of zoos, they realize this will be a catastrophe. Joining forces with regular humans to avert the problem will mean “coming out” as the powerful beings they are. Again, a potential disaster. Attracted against his better judgment, Zyl teams up with the cat lover he met under awkward circumstances only to discover a valuable ally and a soul mate..

Menage anyone?

A couple of sexy menage stories…

  • Served by Maxine Mansfield
  • The Foster Family by Jaime Samms

❅❅❅❅❅❅❅

ServedServed by Maxine Mansfield

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The blurb…

Beach volleyball player Sam Waterson knows he made a mistake–a really big one–three years ago when paparazzi interrupted his jubilant celebration with sexy Carlos Delacruz, the love of Sam’s life, and with their ménage partner Drew Eversly…and Sam blamed the public exposure on the wrong man. But fate has given him a second chance to prove his prowess on the sun-baked beach volleyball court and at loving the sensual man who has unknowingly held his heart. Can he–or Carlos or Drew–win a spot on the team? But even beyond sweating it out on the court and regaining the spot they had to forfeit three years ago, can Sam win back Carlos’s heart? Sam needs to show Carlos that he can spike and score where it counts…between the sheets.

So what did I think?

Sam (Montana or Cowboy), Carlos (New York) and Drew (California) try out for a place on the beach volleyball team for the London Olympics. More erotica than romance, there is lots of three-way sex between these gorgeous athletes.

Sam loves Carlos but has to win back his trust after doubting him years ago when they were set up and caught out having sex with Drew on the beach. Together, the three men defeat the scheming Eric and two find love with a happy friend on the side.

Maybe more sex than other action but still a nice read.

The Foster FamilyThe Foster Family by Jaime Samms

My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars

The blurb…

Growing up in foster care has left Kerry Grey with little self-esteem or hope for his future. A college dropout, Kerry scrapes by on a part-time job at a garden nursery. His friendship with his boss and working with the plants are the only high points in Kerry’s life. He’s been dating the man who bullied him at school, but when his boyfriend abandons him at a party, Kerry wanders down the beach to drown his sorrows in a bottle of scotch.

Malcolm Holmes and Charlie Stone have been together for fifteen years. Despite Charlie’s willingness to accept Malcolm’s unspoken domination in bed, something is missing from their relationship. Early one morning, they rescue a passed out Kerry from being washed away by the tide and Charlie immediately senses a kindred spirit in the lost younger man. When Kerry’s roommate kicks him out, Malcolm and Charlie invite him into their home. As Charlie and Kerry bond over Charlie’s garden, Malcolm sees Kerry may be just who they have been looking for to complete their lives. All they have to do is show Kerry, and each other, that Kerry’s submissive tendencies will fit their dynamic.

But someone is sabotaging Kerry at every turn. As he struggles to discover the culprit, he fears for the safety of his new friends. If Malcolm and Charlie cannot help, their lifelong search for their perfect third may not end with the happily ever after they imagined.

So what did I think?

This is a really interesting book to comment on because I liked the story but didn’t necessarily understand the dynamics of the relationship. However this didn’t stop me enjoying the story.

I did like the characters. I liked their ‘brokenness’. I liked the challenges faced by the younger Kerry as he deals with his broken relationship and loss of home. I liked his foster background and the way this connected him with Malcolm. I liked the struggles of the older couple, Charlie and Malcolm as they try to find the right balance in their relationship and the key part to ‘make them work’ even after all those years together.

This story wasn’t the typical menage story I was expecting. It was more focused on the emotional journey of all three men and less on the three way sex. I also found the BDSM took a back seat. This is definitely a story for anyone who likes a focus on a relationship with an age difference.

One Night Ride by Jennah Scott

One Night RideOne Night Ride by Jennah Scott

My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars

The Blurb…

Brett Colson’s ready to get back into the dating game. Competing in rodeos across the country kept him out of the game, so when he hears about the 1Night Stand service from a friend, he takes a chance.

Bull rider Jace Peterson lost his first love over a year before to another man. Hitting his thirtieth birthday, Jace listens to his friends’ concerns; he needs to end his self-imposed dry spell and enlist the help of Madame Eve.

Brett and Jace expect nothing more than a satisfying one-night ride. But they’re wrong.

So what did I think?

With a title like “One Night Ride” you know what you are in for – one hot night of passion! The title doesn’t lie as Jace and Brett steam up the pages! But you do get a bit more from these two gorgeous cowboys – and speaking of gorgeous cowboys, I do love that cover!

Both men have reached the point in their lives where they feel the need to use a dating service. I loved the little glimpses of the personalities and backgrounds of each man and the natural way they interacted. I loved the sex and I loved the way both men had a feeling they wanted more (not that they’d admit it!)

There was one part in the story that I didn’t quite get or maybe didn’t think was made the most of – Jace’s ex being in the restaurant. It gave Jace a chance to talk about that part of his past but I think I was expecting more from this unexpected encounter.

I also felt the ending was too rushed and felt a little annoyed at Jace for waiting so long to make his move, particularly given his circumstances. I enjoyed the style of this book and really liked the characters so overall wanted it to go on longer. I wanted to see Jace have to work a bit more for his happy ending. I would love to see another book telling more of Brett and Jace’s story now they’ve decided that a one night ride wasn’t nearly enough!
