Sam and Aaron

L.B. Gregg

The blurb:

With our family’s legacy, Meyers B&B, in the flailing hands of me, Sam Meyers, and my sister Wynne, we’re determined to revive the place. We’ve started a series of blind-date cooking classes, and taken on our first boarder. Granddad is even now rolling in his grave.

Signed up for the class is our new guest, Aaron Saunders, a Californian transplant who’s distractingly handsome and clearly up to no good. I can’t quite figure him out. He blew into town and has been relentless in his search for…something.

The sexy sneak is intriguing. And we’ve had a steamy moment. Or two. But now I can’t stop wondering why he’s searching in secret. From the library, to the historical society, to my own backyard, Aaron leaves no stone unturned or record book unopened. He’s definitely gotten my attention. But that might not be the only thing he’s after.

So what did Robyn think?

I thoroughly enjoyed this. Even though I haven’t read any of the previous 4 books, it was an easy story to follow.  Some of the previous books characters make an appearance but you don’t need to know their story to be able to enjoy this one.

In saying that, I now want to read the previous stories because this had some great laugh-out-loud moments. The writing was witty and descriptive and pulled me along easily. Sam was a bit of a bore, but only because he thought he should be. Stuck in town where nothing happened. That was until Aaron came along and turned his world upside down. Mysterious Aaron who had secrets all his own. Who was he and why did he look suspiciously like Sam’s sister Wynne?

Yes there was a small mystery but there wasn’t any heavy angst. Simply a lovely light read with a nice side plot. There wasn’t much sex. A jerk off session in-between the pews at St Joe’s (yes gay sex in the Catholic church – remember I said it was funny?) and a blow job later on. Nothing too descriptive. The story didn’t have a HEA more of a HFN, but maybe book #6 will include these two. Let’s hope so.

4.5 stars

Robyn Reads joins the blog!

Originally reviewing for Mrs Condit, Nic asked me to join ‘Because two men are better than one.’

As you probably know Becky Condit is retiring her blog and I needed a home. So here I am. I read entirely mm romance and last year read over 300 books. I’m probably not going to make that target this year as I’ve started writing, and this combined with ‘real life’ means reading has taken a back seat. Maybe not a back seat as such, just sharing the front seat with the others.

I’m dropping the ‘Reads’ from my name here and anything posted by me will just be ‘Robyn’.  I’m still Robyn Reads on Facebook and Goodreads, if you’re interested in being my friend and seeing what else I’m up to in the mm romance world, just click on the buttons below!
Big thank you to Nic Starr for having me – I look forward to a long friendship, within our ‘real lives’ as well as the blog. xxx

The blurb…

Despite his past abuse, James has come to terms with his relationship with his Dom and lover Seth. Seth treats James with all the trust and love his sub desires. There is only one thing left to do to make it all complete: Seth needs to put a collar on James.

 An Excerpt…

“Patience, James,” Seth murmured. He carefully removed his long- sleeved dress shirt and the tight undershirt beneath, revealing his strong chest and arms for James’s hungry gaze. He kicked off his shoes, removing one sock at a time, driving James crazy in the process. He knew the sex and orgasm to come would be better for all the denial and teasing, but he didn’t care right then. No, he wanted Seth. Now. Next went the belt and then the buttons and zipper for the dark slacks Seth wore, but before they slid down to reveal anything more than the black band of the boxer- briefs Seth wore, he stopped.
“We need to talk before I continue.”
James fought his need for Seth’s pleasure to focus on Seth and what he’d said. He knew everything would stop if he didn’t. “Y-yes?”
“This is important, James.” Seth voice was firm, the tone pulling James’s attention away from his desire for his lover. “I have something I want to give you before we continue. You will get your release either way, do not fear that, but….”
“Seth? What’s wrong?” The odd look in Seth’s eyes confused him. There seemed to be worry mixed with love and desire, but it was the worry that froze him.
“Nothing is wrong, but I need to ask you something.”
He tried to think through what he could want to ask now but drew a blank. “Love, you’re scaring me a little. I’m bound, hard, and leaking, but now you want to talk?” James gave a strangled laugh, not sure what to expect.

Let It Ride

Let It Ride

L.C. Chase

The blurb…

Pickup man Bridge Sullivan is the kind of cowboy everyone wants—as a brother, a friend, a lover. People think he’s straight, but Bridge isn’t one for labels, and when a sexy male paramedic jumpstarts his heart, he charges in with all guns blazing.

New York City transplant Eric Palmer grew up in foster care. While he always had a roof over his head, he never felt love or a sense of belonging . . . until he joined the California rodeo circuit as a paramedic and found a band of brothers who took him in as one of their own. Now, one in particular is making Eric’s pulse race.

When things heat up between Bridge and Eric, Bridge has to prove to Eric he’s not just experimenting with the rougher sex, while Eric must overcome his fears of being unwanted and cast aside. He knows that trusting Bridge may be the key to his happy ever after, but getting in the saddle is much, much easier than learning to let it ride.

So what did I think?

I really liked book one of the Pickup Men series (which is a Lambda Literary Award Finalist for Gay Romance) so knew I would enjoy this one and wasn’t disappointed. As with the first book, there is lots of emotion set against a back drop of the rodeo. The characters from book one are here to some degree – Marty, Tripp, Kent – but I don’t think it is absolutely necessary to read book one (although it would be a shame to miss it!)

I thought this would be more Bridge’s story as he deals with his attraction to Eric and finally wakes up to the fact that he may be bi or gay, something his one-time experiment with a guy in college didn’t clue him up on. But he accepts his attraction to Eric easily, having the courage to approach the man and push for a relationship. Surprisingly there’s not a lot of issue with anyone else’s reaction to his new path in life either, somewhere I thought the story would go.

The emotion surrounds Eric, with his low sense of self worth based on his childhood – abandonment by his own parents and subsequent foster homes – and experience with relationships. No one has truly loved him and stuck by him.

“A cold sliver of panic tickled across his chest. Disposable people didn’t get to keep lives like this.”

Eric believes there’s something wrong with him and that Bridge will eventually see this. He looks for excuses and struggles to accept the truth of Bridge’s feelings.

This is a story of sexual exploration (there’s no hesitation from either man when it comes to the joys of sex!) with lots of soul searching thrown in. This cowboy isn’t afraid of emotional conversations and going after his man. Of course, there’s the big dramatic moment of the men coming together for their happy ending – I’m such a sucker for these types of resolutions! 🙂

This is a single sitting read – sweet and sexy with nice characters. 4 stars because it was a very enjoyable way to spend my evening.

Happy reading,

Nic x

A Reason To Stay by R.J. Scott

A great start to a series – Heroes! If you haven’t read the first book yet, do so now because the second book is due to be released next month. 🙂

A Reason To Stay

A Reason to Stay

by  R.J. Scott

My rating: 4 stars

The Blurb…

When SEAL, Viktor Zavodny, left small town America for the Navy he made sure he never had a reason to return for anything other than visiting family. He wanted to see the world and fight for his country and nothing, or no one, was getting in his way. He fights hard, and plays harder, and a succession of men and women share his bed.

But a phone call from his sister has him using his thirty day down time to go home instead of enjoying his usual thirty nights of random sex and sleep.

What he finds is a mystery on the Green Mountains and the only man attempting to make sense of seemingly unrelated deaths. His childhood friend and first love… Lieutenant Aiden Coleman, Sheriff.

There were reasons Viktor left his home. Not least Aiden Coleman with his small town innocence and his dreams of forever. Now Adam and Viktor need to work together to save lives and prove there is a hero in all of us.

When it’s done, if they make it out alive, can Aiden persuade Viktor that he has a reason to stay? Maybe forever?

So what did I think?

I thoroughly enjoyed a A Reason To Stay which has set the standard for another great series by RJ Scott.

There are a couple of elements to this story.

Firstly, it is a mystery. Something strange is happening up the mountain and Viktor, Navy SEAL, is going to find out exactly what it is and why his nephew ended up in a coma in hospital. His family is at risk and he will do everything and anything to protect them.

It is a romance, a story of second and third chances. Viktor and Aiden (who is now working in law enforcement) knew each other in high school, where Aiden had long term expectations. Years later when they reconnect, he still loves Viktor. But Viktor is a man haunted by his belief that as a SEAL he can’t offer anything to anyone. He runs. It takes the threat to his family to bring Viktor and Aiden together again as they put their lives at risk to solve the mystery.

This is a story with lots of drama and action– murder, villains and true hero moments– but also soul searching as Aiden and Viktor fight their attraction to each other. The sex is super hot and the ending fabulous– i just love big moments that make people face the truth!

I enjoyed the blend of mystery and romance and the pacing of the book. Sure, at moments Viktor annoyed the hell out of me but the happy ending for these heroes was definitely worth it.

I am now very much looking forward to the second book, Last Marine Standing, due to be released in June, which gives us Sam’s story.

A copy of this book was received from the author with no expectations of a review.

Happy reading,

PRE-RELEASE REVIEW: Forty-Two Stairs by A.F. Henley

Forty-two Stairs

Forty-Two Stairs by A.F. Henley

The blurb…

Owen has been struggling with addiction since he was a teenager, but it takes a DUI involving another vehicle for him to finally face his issues. The road to recovery is a rough one, and for Owen it’s a journey made harder by bankruptcy, loneliness, and repressed memories.

His new apartment doesn’t help either. It’s small, worn, and hot as hell. The only way to reach it is a tedious stretch of stairs that seems like the final insult on top of a whole pile of misery. Thankfully, the mess comes with one bright spot: intense, pretty Sebastian, who seems to have a knack for keeping his head up and finding the beauty in everything.

So what did I think?

Owen and Sebastian– two men who aren’t perfect, men with issues and baggage– who take a journey of discovery and find out that sometimes it is easier to move forward with someone to lean on, and that “someone” doesn’t need to be perfect.

Owen is at a low point in his life, a drunk driving charge resulting in him losing his job, home and boyfriend. He is placed on probation and needs to start over and therefore moves into a small apartment, directly over Sebastian’s apartment. It takes him forty-two stairs to reach his new apartment– a tortuous journey that Sebastian assures him will become easier.

The story follows the evolution of Owen and Sebastian’s relationship against the doubts they both have. Owen, as reinforced by his brother and his AA sponsor, believes that a new relationship will hinder his recovery. But it’s not as simple as overcoming the physical addiction– there are many ghosts in Owen’s past that drove him to lose himself in alcohol. Sebastian has his own issues and doesn’t want to hurt Owen in any way.

Purple-haired Sebastian is the highlight of the story. There was something so engaging about his character. He also responded so beautifully to Owen, knowing what needed to be said to help Owen to deal with the ghosts from his past and move forward with this life. I would love to spend some more time with Sebastian, to get to know him, more insight into his problems and how he ended up maintaining the apartment block.

Owen’s life does change and his relationship with Sebastian deepens in parallel with his ability to climb the forty-two steps without getting breathless.

“Yeah,” Owen chuckled. “Those first few trips up are nasty. You get used to it, though.”
His mother rose and tugged her clothing into place. “Let me guess? You just have to keep making the trip.”
“And look up,” Owen said brightly. “You’d be surprised the difference that looking up makes.”
