Character Interview: Dominic Delingpole from The Delingpole Mysteries series

So tell me a bit about you?

My name’s Dominic Delingpole. I’m thirty-seven years old and I’m a lawyer. Well, actually I’m a solicitor, which is a type of lawyer in England. We divide lawyers into solicitors and barristers. Solicitors work with the clients, and barristers do the advocacy bit.

You have some middle names don’t you?

Did you have to bring those up! Yes. My full name’s Dominic Aloysius Winston Spencer Delingpole. My father was a big fan of Britain’s greatest prime minister.

How would you describe yourself?

Ha! Devilishly handsome (if only).

Well you do have amazing blue eyes. And you’re very tall.

Why thank you kind lady! Yes, I’m 6’ 3” in my socks. And I do go to the gym three days a week.

Do you have a partner?

Yes, and we’re married. Jonathan is my husband. He’s an opera singer. Well, part-time opera singer. Most of the time he designs and creates gardens for people. We live in Sussex on the south coast of England, close to the Glyndebourne Opera House. Jonathan advises on the maintenance of the gardens there.

What’s the most exciting thing that’s happened to you?

Oh, that’s difficult! So many things. I could start with being nearly gassed to death in a car by this murderous woman who’s very homophobic, and wants us gays removed from the planet. Or the time I was nearly shot when Jonathan and I were in San Francisco trying to stop this group called the Ninety-Nine from rewriting the internet. And then of course there’s the time I went to search for my son who’d been kidnapped by this anti-gay group in Russia.

How on earth do you have all these adventures? I thought you said you were just a solicitor.

Not “just” a solicitor thank you very much! I’m very proud of what I do. But you’re right. Jonathan and I do seem to stumble into trouble. I can assure you we don’t mean to. But once we do, Jonathan gets very passionate about making things right again.

Are you two going to have children?

Well….we’ve talked about it a lot. And my son would love to have a brother or sister. He and I only reconnected last year. But it’s made me think seriously about it. The problem is, I have to convince Jonathan. He enjoys gadding about too much to settle down and be a father.

We’ve not heard much from either of you since The Deadly Lies book came out two years ago. When will we hear more?

I’m pleased to say that there’s going to be another instalment of our adventures in 2020. It’s called The Foreign Affair, and it’s the one where I end up going to Russia.

And finally, what’s your favourite book?

Nic, I have to say in all honesty, I loved your Charlie’s Hero. I identified with Charlie so much.

Why thank you, Dominic! Thank you very much.

It’s a pleasure.
