EXCERPT & GIVEAWAY: The Innocent Auction by Victoria Sue

The Innocent Auction. Cover.

Author Name: Victoria Sue

Book Name: The Innocent Auction

Release Date: December 28, 2015

Blurb:

London 1810.

Their love was a death sentence.

Deacon, Viscount Carlisle, was aware of the slums and gin-lanes of London. Just as he was aware of the underground traffic that furnished the brothels and bath houses with human innocents. He was also aware that the so-called justice system would hang the accused without much of an attempt at a defense, unless the unfortunate had deep pockets to pay for it.

He just hadn’t expected to be directly involved in any of it.
It started with a plea for help and ended with forbidden love, the love between a Viscount and a stable-boy. An impossible love and a guarantee of the hangman’s noose.

Will Deacon fight for Tom? Will he risk the death sentence and take that fight from the stately halls of his English mansion to the horrors of Newgate Prison and the slums of London?

Or will he realize that if he doesn’t, death will be a welcome end to the loneliness of the sentence he is already living?

Blurb:

Their marriage was supposed to be all business….

When struggling novelist Chris Valentine meets Jesse Donovan, he’s interested in a book contract, or possibly a date. The last thing Chris expects is a marriage proposal from New York City’s most eligible bachelor!

Jesse’s in a pinch. To keep control of his company, he has to marry. So he has valid reasons for offering Chris this business deal: in exchange for living in a gorgeous mansion for a year, playing the doting husband, Chris gets all the writing time he wants and walks away with a million-dollar payoff. Surely Chris can handle that. He can handle living with the most handsome and endearing man he’s ever met, a man he immediately knows he wants in the worst way and can’t have. Or can he?

Excerpt from Chapter Six:

Now, standing in the conference room of Windview Enterprises’ corporate headquarters near South Ferry in Manhattan, one of the matching platinum bands Jesse had bought for them in his pants pocket, Chris wondered if he’d wake up from the dream. The floor-to-ceiling windows looked out over Wall Street and the East River through the forest of high-rise buildings.

“Do you, Jesse Chase Donovan, take Christopher James Valentine to be your husband, in love and in friendship, until you are parted by death?” the judge asked.

“I do.” As Jesse slipped the ring on Chris’s finger, he met Chris’s gaze with such intensity that for an instant, Chris could almost forget the entire ceremony was a ruse to ensure the future of Windview remained firmly in Jesse’s control. Damn the man for being so attractive. Damn him for being a nice guy, because that was the worst part of it. And the part that had you agreeing.

“And do you, Christopher James Valentine, take Jesse Chase Donovan to be your husband, in love and in friendship, until you are parted by death?”

Chris swallowed hard and prayed he didn’t look as incredibly nervous as he felt. “I do.” His hand shook as he took Jesse’s hand and put the ring on his finger.

“Congratulations, Chris and Jesse,” the judge said.

Chris caught Val’s eye for a split second, and he half expected her to urge him to kiss Jesse. But it was Jesse who took charge and blindsided Chris with a kiss.

It started sweetly enough, just Jesse’s lips against his, but instead of releasing Chris, Jesse pulled him tighter against him and pressed his tongue into his mouth. Jesse tasted fucking amazing. Chris didn’t hesitate—their tongues tangled and danced. This close, Jesse smelled good and felt even better. Chris was barely aware of slipping his hands around Jesse’s back before resting them on lean hips. He didn’t think twice as his body and Jesse’s responded in kind.

Someone giggled—Chris recognized Val’s voice—and Jesse pulled abruptly away. Their eyes met for a split second, and Chris thought he saw a mixture of desire and surprise in Jesse’s deep blue eyes. The next thing Chris knew, Val had thrown her arms around him and only his racing heart and tingling lips told him he hadn’t imagined the entire thing.

“Oh, Chris,” Val cooed. “You really did it!”

“Yeah” was the only response Chris could manage. He was still thinking about Jesse’s mouth.

“I guess I was wrong about him being straight,” she whispered mischievously.

Chris was thrilled when Terry grabbed him in a bear hug, because he had no idea how to respond to Val’s comment. He also wasn’t sure if he should be pissed off with Jesse for the show. He supposed if this was going to work, Jesse needed to make the marriage look real. Still, how difficult would it have been to warn Chris that he had that up his sleeve?

All about Shira

Shira Anthony is a complete sucker for a happily-ever-after, and rarely reads or writes a story without one. Never a fan of instalove, Shira likes to write stories about real men with real issues making real relationships work.

In her last incarnation, Shira was a professional opera singer, performing roles in such operas as “Tosca,” “Pagliacci,” and “La Traviata,” among others. Her Blue Notes Series is loosely based upon her own experiences as a professional musician.

Shira is married with two children and two insane dogs and when she’s not writing, she is usually in a courtroom trying to make the world safer for children. When she’s not working, she can be found aboard a 36’ catamaran at the Carolina coast with her favorite sexy captain at the wheel. She’s given up TV for evenings spent with her laptop, and she never goes anywhere without a pile of unread M/M romance on her Kindle.

Guest Post: The Evolution of a Character by Lily Harlem

Inspiration for characters comes to me from a variety of different places. For example in Dark Warrior (an MM novel set in Kenya) I’d seen a gorgeous picture of a man from behind who grew in my imagination to become Malik, a strong tribal man who is full of passion, very brave and modern thinking. (Click here to see the photo.) In Who Dares Wins I’d been watching a series (Strike Back) full of sexy military men and that sparked off an MMM scene with characters who were secretive, brooding and liked to work had and play hard. My serial Caught on Camera (part one is FREE) came about because I’d seen a documentary about making an MM porn movie and the two actors had fallen in love while shooting. Those two men and their sweet romance stayed with me and soon I was penning my own story about porn actors falling in lust and love.

My latest release is Heat of the Day an MMF story set in beautiful Spain. It was a picture of beautiful Brock O’Hurn that sparked this story. (Click here to see the photo.) I’m very lucky and have a fabulous street team and I put the picture up so we could all have a happy drool first thing in the morning. Comments about him were very enthusiastic so I decided to write a story about a sexy guy with a man bun – one of the things Brock is famous for. I asked for ideas for names. I had many suggestions but one member of the team came up with Seraphim (Sera for short) he said it meant Angel. Another street team member suggested the character could be Portuguese. I loved both ideas, the name was so different and I’ve been lucky enough to travel to Portugal several times so felt I could work with this nationality for a character.

Sera grew into a big personality in my mind and as such became that way on paper. He’s a free spirit, loves the person not the gender – hence his threesome relationship with a man and a woman in Heat of the Day – and tries hard to do the right thing by everyone.

There’s lots of sexy times in Heat of the Day, with MM, MF and MFM scenes it ticks all the boxes. But what I enjoyed is the dynamics of the threesome, how they care for each other and how there is no jealousy and how devastated they are when torn apart. Of course making up is always fun and that’s when the temperature really heats up.

I hope you’ll check out Heat of the Day and my other MM works. Thank you for reading.

Lily

Heat of the Day

When three become two with no explanation, emotions run high, passions flare and hearts are ripped apart.

Everyone can remember a perfect summer—one with endless blue skies, a heart brimming with true love and nights full of hot, sweaty lust. Well, we’ve just had a summer like that, Piper and I, and it was spent in Spain with a man who had that certain je ne sais quoi that we couldn’t resist.

Seraphim came into our lives and blinded us with his beauty, his charisma and his exotic charm. His generosity with his mind, his affection and his body blew us away and the three of us became a joyously tangled trio who needed nothing more than to be together.

So when he left, when we had no way of tracing him, the despair was black, the pain raw and our only comfort was each other. But why did Sera leave? What would make a man walk away from his lovers? And if he showed up again on the doorstep, what the hell would happen after so much angst? One thing’s for sure, it would be an explosive reunion in many ways. Absence might make the heart grow fonder, but it can make the rest of the body highly volatile as need wars with hurt, and pain collides with desire.

Excerpt

“On the way to Lisbon. It was late, I took a shortcut back to my parent’s home. I was tired. It was a mistake to go through submundo do crime.” He paused as the fear of that moment flooded back to him. “They kicked and slashed me, three of them, then took my phone, my money… That’s why I couldn’t call you and then—”

His words were cut short by Flynn’s mouth hitting down on his, hard.

Thoughts of the dark and the evil men, and the pain, vanished. Sera groaned and arched his back, bashing his chest into Flynn’s. He was trapped, held hostage by a furious lover, but he was being kissed, kissed senseless. Kissed in a way that made him starving for more and in a way that told him perhaps he’d be forgiven.

He pushed his tongue at Flynn’s in a crazy dance of need and struggled to catch his breath.

“I’m so fucking angry with you,” Flynn said, breaking the kiss and staring down at him.

“I know.”

“But you’re okay.” Flynn slid his eyes to the scar again.

“Yes, that was the worst they did.” He hesitated. “I’m sorry, really I am.”

“Sorry…isn’t enough… Not for what you’ve done to her.” Flynn’s voice was broken by his panting. “She’s been so sad.”

“Piper?”

“Of course Piper. You broke her heart.”

That knowledge thrilled Sera but he needed more. “And you?” He pulled at his arms but Flynn didn’t release them, he kept him in a pincer grip. “What about you? Have you been heartbroken?”

Flynn let out a low, rumbling sound that reminded Sera of a growl. He then swooped down for another kiss, one that was full of passion and fury. It had a dangerous edge to it that thrilled Sera, yet also made him wonder just what Flynn had in mind.

It was clear emotions had been running high while he’d been out of town. That calm domesticated scene he’d witnessed minutes before was the tip of an iceberg.

A long, thick wedge of flesh bumped up against Sera’s abdomen—Flynn’s cock, straining through his shorts.

God, he loved that cock. He wanted that cock. No, damn it, he needed that cock. It had been too long since he’d been up close and personal with it.

“I should kick your ass to kingdom come,” Flynn said, kissing Sera’s cheek then treating his earlobe to a sharp nip.

Sera flinched and bucked, wriggled away as far as he could. “Yes, you have every right to—

“I should blacken both your eyes, knock some of your fucking teeth out too.” Flynn stared down at him. A glisten of sweat sat on his brow.

“If it makes you feel better.” He’d do whatever it took to make it up to Flynn and Piper. “Do what you need to.” He braced, convinced another punch would head his way.

Flynn wrinkled his nose, his eyes darkened. “Maybe I will.” He straightened his legs so they were over Sera’s, curled his hips under and slid his cock, through their clothing, over Sera’s groin. “Maybe I won’t.”

Fuck, he’s so hard.

Sera felt blood rush to his shaft. A full-blown erection to match Flynn’s was growing rapidly. He moaned and hooked his leg around Flynn’s, pulling him nearer.

“You have no idea what you did to us,” Flynn said, gripping Sera’s jawline and holding his face steady.

“I…I missed you both too.” To prove it he tilted his hips, rutting against Flynn. “There’s been no one else. I only thought of you.”

Some stories need to be told, but they cross lines that are sometimes mottled and difficult to discern. Everyone has their own style, and we want to read your tales that cross typical societal lines. Those stories considered ‘taboo’ or ‘fetish’ may be exactly what we’re looking for. Do your characters have a kink that doesn’t fit elsewhere? This line can be any pairing het or GLBTQ. This might be the right home for them. Fully-realized plot required; happily-ever-after/happily-for-now not essential. *While we have no ‘hard limits’ at this time, some stories might be too much for us. Please send your 5,000-60,000-word submissions to submissions@torquerepress.com with “The Red Line” and your story title in the subject field. Please see our writer’s guidelines page for royalty rates, formatting, and submission information.

Torquere Press is actively seeking het (male/female) stories. Have a vivacious vixen and a nerdy scientist hooking up? Younger woman and older guy? Librarian and rockstar? Torquere Press wants to read your story. They don’t even need to really be opposites in nature—just opposite gender is cool with us. These parings MUST be M/F, but may include ménage (or more) if poignant to plot.
Fully-realized plot required; happily-ever-after or strong happily-for-now required with M/F couple. Please send your 10,000-80,000-word submissions (manuscripts shorter or longer will be considered but will have to be extraordinary) to submissions@torquerepress.com with “Opposites Attract” and your story title in the subject field. Please see our writer’s guidelines page for royalty rates, formatting, and submission information.

TWISTED TALES OF HORROR – YEAR ROUND CALL

Romance can temper even the most horrifying tales, those that leave your stomach clenching with terror, and your mouth bitter with the metallic taste of fear. We’re looking for true horror stories, those that rise above the usual tropes of vampires, ghosts, and shifters, the ones that leave our knees knocking in fear of what lurks in the dark, but still manage to show an element of GLBT romance. Send us your most gripping psychological thrillers, your utterly horrific monster tales, and electrifying gothic horrors from 10K to 100K!

Please send your 10,000-60,000 word submissions to submissions@torquerepress.com with “Twisted Tales of Horror…” and your story title in the subject field. Please see our writer’s guidelines page for royalty rates, formatting and submission information.

The Art of Hero Worship

 by Mia Kerick

Release Date: February 14, 2016

Blurb

Trembling on the floor, pressed beneath a row of seats in a dark theater, college freshman Jason Tripp listens to the terrifying sound of gunshots, as an unknown shooter moves methodically through the theater, randomly murdering men, women, and children attending a student performance of Hamlet. Junior Liam Norcross drapes his massive body on top of Jason, sheltering the younger man from the deathly hail of bullets, risking his life willingly, and maybe even eagerly.

As a result of the shared horror, an extraordinary bond forms between the two young men, which causes discomfort for family and friends, as well as for Jason and Liam, themselves. And added to the challenge of two previously “straight” men falling into a same-sex love, are the complications that arise from the abundance of secrets Liam holds with regard to a past family tragedy. The fledgling passion between the men seems bound to fade away into the darkness from which it emerged.

Jason, however, is inexplicably called to rescue his hero in return, by delving into Liam’s shady past and uncovering the mystery that compels the older man to act as the college town’s selfless savior.

The Art of Hero Worship takes the reader on a voyage from the dark and chilling chaos that accompanies a mass shooting to the thrill of an unexpected and sensual romance.

Pop-pop-pop….

No, I’m not even remotely safe. But thankfully I play dead far better than my dog did when I taught him that trick at the age of seven.

The shots are earsplitting and getting louder because the shooter’s heading our way. I’m so fucking scared I’m trembling violently, but I promised the guy lying on top of me that I’d stay still. I concentrate on taking short shallow breaths, one after another, in my effort to stop trembling. To stay frozen—like I’ve been since I pulled Ginny to the floor and promptly let go of her hand so I could curl up into a tight fetal ball.

Somebody near me sits up, scrambles to his knees, and impulsively crawls toward the far aisle.

Pop-pop-pop…

“Bang, bang… you’re dead.” The voice comes from directly above me; it’s blank and monotone and controlled. The weird snicker that follows is chilling. I want nothing more than to throw the big guy off my back and run like hell toward the double doors, but I just keep on going with the short breaths and stay as still as I’ve ever been in my life. Even in my terrified state, I know that the guy on top of me is totally exposed and I can’t move because I’ll cheat him out of his life, for sure. Which is so not cool when he’s trying to save mine.

I smell blood. Never noticed the smell of blood before. It reminds me of Grandma’s penny collection… if it got spilled onto the sticky floor of the theater. The scent of old copper is everywhere… like wet pennies strewn all around me on the floor.

Pop-pop-pop…

Shooter’s right above us now. Don’t move… don’t move… don’t move….

“Dear God, help us!”  This request seems to catch the shooter’s attention and he turns around and steps away from us. I curse myself for feeling as relieved, and maybe even glad, as I do.

Pop-pop-pop….

We wait and it seems like forever. We wait as voices beg and plead and pray and he shuts them up with bullets. We wait as the sound of shots moves to the front left near the exit, where I figure he’s shooting at anyone who tries to get out through the double doors.

And then, for a second, it’s quiet.

“Now….” The big guy’s voice is whispering but it seems to blast into my left ear. “We have to make our move now.” Before I agree, the heaviness of his body lifts and I feel cold and exposed. “This is our chance to get outta here….”

His hand is attached to the back of my wrist, clutching me so hard that I know I’ll have fingerprint bruises for a week… if I live so long.

Meet the author

Mia Kerick is the mother of four exceptional children—all named after saints—and five nonpedigreed cats—all named after the next best thing to saints, Boston Red Sox players. Her husband of twenty years has been told by many that he has the patience of Job, but don’t ask Mia about that, as it is a sensitive subject.

Mia focuses her stories on the emotional growth of troubled young men and their relationships, and she believes that sex has a place in a love story, but not until it is firmly established as a love story. As a teen, Mia filled spiral-bound notebooks with romantic tales of tortured heroes (most of whom happened to strongly resemble lead vocalists of 1980s big-hair bands) and stuffed them under her mattress for safekeeping. She is thankful to CoolDudes Publishing, Dreamspinner Press, Harmony Ink Press for providing her with an alternate place to stash her stories.

Mia is proud of her involvement with the Human Rights Campaign and cheers for each and every victory made in the name of marital equality. Her only major regret: never having taken typing or computer class in school, destining her to a life consumed with two-fingered pecking and constant prayer to the Gods of Technology.

Book Blurb

Murder in the country.

A one-night stand that refuses to end.

Ghosts from the past that return to haunt.

Special Agent Ben Diggs can’t stand what has become of his life, so much so that he hits the road one night, maybe to crash his bike, maybe to drive off into the night and never be heard from again. But he meets Tanner Bagley, a rancher from rural Pennsylvania in a hick dive bar, and sparks fly. For the first time since everything went to hell, he feels alive again.

Ben runs from his emotions as a rule, and he flees in the middle of the night, trudging back to his dreary life in Baltimore and his failing job as a FBI agent. But then his team is assigned to investigate a murder in that same backwater township in Pennsylvania where he met Tanner, and it’s a different set of sparks that fly when faces Tanner again.

As the bodies start to pile up, tensions flare, and Ben is stuck between teammates that question his every move and a devastatingly handsome rancher whose heart he bruised. The lies keep piling up, and Ben is forced to stake his career – and his very life – on the trembling hopes of his wounded heart.

Deep in the countryside, someone is hunting gay men in Middle Creek, Pennsylvania… Gay men all with ties to Special Agent Diggs’ one-night-stand…

Excerpt

Outside Gettysburg, on the highway halfway between the battlefield and nowhere, the tiny ranching township of Middle Creek boasted a one-stop diner and dive bar on its outskirts. Complete with an after-hours tack shop for all of your midnight ridin’ and ranchin’ needs, it was a neon oasis in an ocean of farmland. There was a mechanical bull in the back, and peanut shells and hay littered the split-wood floor. Wagon wheels and deer heads hung on the walls, as did Christmas lights. A rickety old karaoke machine belted tunes that were out of style the day they came out, decades ago. In one corner, a stage made up of leftover pallets bungee-corded together hosted the local talent—fiddlers, guitar strummers, and banjo killers—every Thursday evening.

On Fridays, it was “Prime Rib and Shrimp Special” night, and the diner was packed from four in the afternoon until eight in the evening. Afterward, only the drunks and the loners stayed, downing beers at the worn mahogany bar as bad Elvis covers droned amid twinkling Christmas lights and the buzzing glow of beer signs. Ben had been there once before, on another night when he just had to ride, to get away from everyone and everything. He hadn’t gotten drunk that night, but he’d been close. It was a modern miracle he’d made it home, and he’d stayed off the booze for a whole month after.

Tonight, he was going to get ripped. Look out, liver. Suit up, kidneys. Snorting, Ben tossed his keys into his helmet and cracked his neck. His eyes caught on his reflection in his mirrored visor. Messy dark hair, scruff that could only just be called a five o’clock shadow. Chapped lips turned down. And his eyes—God, when had he gotten so damn old? So damn worn down? His gray eyes were dead and dull, and he even bored himself. He spun his helmet around, banishing his reflection, and climbed off his bike. His jeans sighed, loosening around his balls and his thighs, and he unzipped his dark leather riding jacket as he strode into the bar.

Four other drunks tonight, two at the bar and two trading stories over mugs of beer at a back corner. They were old, at least one hundred and eighty four, and they had to be sharing memories of their time in the War of 1812. Were there Diggs dying in that war too? His pops had drilled him about their proud history, but for the life of him, he couldn’t remember which illustrious ancestor had sacrificed in that war.

Ben slid onto a barstool at the very end of the bar—a signal for leave me the fuck alone—and propped his helmet up so he couldn’t see himself. He clasped his hands together, leaning against the mahogany, and waited.

After a good fuck long of a while, the bartender stopped drying his glasses and wandered over. His gaze lingered on the helmet and then slid over to Ben’s raised eyebrows. He stopped just outside the edge of Ben’s “don’t fuck with me” bubble.

“What’ll it be?” Bored, the old man waited for Ben’s order with a sour twist to his lips.

“Yuengling. And keep them coming.”

The bartender nodded and wandered off, filling a pint glass with Ben’s beer before sliding it back down the bar to him. Ben flipped his credit card out to open the tab and cracked his neck again, rolling his head from side to side.

Three beers in, and more bad Elvis covers, the bells over the diner’s door jangled, announcing a newcomer to the fray. Ben shot a glance over his slumped shoulder.

Blond hair caught his eyes. He sat up straighter and tried to get a better look, all the while trying to appear like he wasn’t interested at all.

He had blond hair, cut short and trimmed neatly, and a long-sleeved, plaid flannel shirt stretched over a firm, muscled body. As he moved toward the bar, Ben noticed tight, faded, button fly jeans cupped a firm ass and hugged down tight legs—legs meant for gripping and riding, for wrapping around thick, powerful mounts and holding on. In scuffed work boots, he stopped before the bar and hooked one onto the leg of a barstool as he leaned forward, resting against the bar top.

Slowly, Ben’s gaze wandered up the newcomer’s body, and he came face-to-face with the man’s raised eyebrow and quiet smirk. “Hi,” the blond said, never dropping that damned smirk. “That your bike outside?” He jutted his chin toward Ben.

“Huh?” Ben frowned. He sat back, and his elbow jostled his helmet. Oh, right. His helmet. Dead giveaway and all, just like he was being. He straightened, tried for nonchalance. “Yeah. Just stopped in for a few.” He nodded to his beer and shut his damn mouth before he got into more trouble.

“You’re not from around here.” It wasn’t a question. Blondie pulled out the barstool next to Ben and plopped down, still smiling. His chocolate eyes laughed at Ben as he stuck out his hand. “M’name’s Tanner.”

Ben stared and then slowly took it. He shook once, but pulled back when he felt Tanner’s thumb stroke down the back his hand. “Ben.” He turned back to his beer.

INTERVIEW: Drama Muscle by Joe Cosentino

DramaMusclecover

DRAMA MUSCLE (a Nicky and Noah mystery)

a comedy/mystery/romance novel by JOE COSENTINO from Lethe Press

Blurb

It could be lights out for college theatre professor Nicky Abbondanza. With dead bodybuilders popping up on campus, Nicky, and his favorite colleague/life partner Noah Oliver, must use their drama skills to figure out who is taking down pumped up musclemen in the Physical Education building before it is curtain down for Nicky and Noah. Complicating matters is a visit from Noah’s parents from Wisconsin, and Nicky’s suspicion that Noah may be hiding more than a cut, smooth body. You will be applauding and shouting Bravo for Joe Cosentino’s fast-paced, side-splittingly funny, edge-of-your-seat entertaining second novel in this delightful series. Curtain up and weights up!

Q&A with Joe Cosentino

Hello, Joe. Welcome back to Because Two Men Are Better Than One. Thank you for visiting.

My pleasure. Thank you for all that you do to get out the good word about gay-themed novels.

You’re a college professor/department head in the Theatre Department. When do find the time to write?

I write in the evenings. Being a little tired helps loosen my creative energies and flow. Plus my spouse has gone to bed, so the house is quiet, leaving me with all the voices in my head.

Where do you write?

I have a cozy home study with a window seat, fireplace with a cherry wood mantel (like Martin Anderson in the Nicky and Noah mysteries), a huge cherry wood desk, and cherry wood bookshelves. It would be hard not to write in a study like that.

You’ve said in interviews that your novels are “theatrical.” What do you mean by that?

Since I started as an actor and playwright, I write a great deal of dialogue. My novels are also quite cinematic. Hear that film and television producers?

Any plans for the Nicky and Noah mysteries to become a television series?

Sure, I have lots of plans. I’m a legend in my own mind. Now I just need a TV network to have the plans too.

Who would you cast in the leading roles?

I’d cast Matt Bomer as Nicky, Neil Patrick Harris as Noah, me as Martin Anderson (the theatre department head), and Rosie O’Donnell and Bruce Willis as Noah’s parents.

You acted in film, television, and theatre opposite stars like Rosie O’Donnell (AT&T industrial), Nathan Lane (Roar of the Greasepaint onstage), Bruce Willis (A Midsummer Night’s Dream onstage), Charles Keating (NBC’s Another World), Jason Robards (Commercial Credit computer commercial), and Holland Taylor (ABC’s My Mother Was Never a Kid TV movie). What was it like acting with all those celebrities?

First, I’m so glad Holland Taylor came out. It’s never too late. As for the celebs, in every case I worked with them before they became famous, and they were all gracious, hard-working, kind, and very funny. I recommended Rosie O’Donnell go on Star Search, and she did!

Since you are a college theatre professor, is the Nicky and Noah series based on your college?

Treemeadow College exists only in my head. My colleagues kid me that if anybody at my college ticks me off, I kill him/her in the series? Hah. To be honest, I like my colleagues and students too much to murder them in my books. By the way, they love my books and want to be in them. However, only Martin Anderson, Nicky and Noah’s department head, is based on a real person—me. Martin is a loyal, hardworking department head and professor who fully supports his faculty colleagues, office assistant, and the students in his department. Like me, he is also a little bit, well quite a bit, of a gossip. He also has a terrific husband.

Why did you set the series in a college university?

As a college professor/department head, I have always been aware that colleges are rife with mystery, romance, and humor. In each book Nicky and Noah eavesdrop, seduce, role play, and finally trap the murderer, as pandemonium, hilarity, and true love ensue for a happily ever after ending—until the next book.

Why did you write a gay mystery/comedy/romance series?

The Nicky and Noah mysteries are the kind of books I like reading: funny, theatrical, sexy, wild, and wacky with a solid mystery full of plot twists and turns at its center—and a surprise ending!

You say they are “cozy mysteries.” What does that mean?

The Nicky and Noah mysteries are set in an Edwardian style university founded originally by a gay couple (Tree and Meadow) whose name the university bears. The setting is warm and cozy, the clues and murders (and laughs) come fast and furious, there are enough plot twists and turns and a surprise ending to keep the reader guessing, and at the center is a touching gay romance between Associate Professor of Directing Nicky Abbondanza and Assistant Professor of Acting Noah Oliver. Along the way, Nicky and Noah fall in love, as I’ve heard the readers fall in love with them. In the first novel (Drama Queen), it is winter, so white snow, cherry wood mantels surrounding blazing fireplaces, and hot chocolate are in abundance. In this current book (Drama Muscle), it is fall, so gorgeous leaves of amber, violet, and scarlet blanket the campus. The third book (Drama Cruise not yet published) takes us on a cruise to Alaska for sights of glaciers and whales while Nicky directs a murder mystery dinner theatre show onboard ship.

Was Drama Queen, the first Nicky and Noah mystery, well received?

Reviewers called Drama Queen hysterically funny farce, Murder She Wrote meets Hart to Hart meets The Hardy Boys, and a captivating whodunit with a surprise ending. One reviewer said it was the funniest book of the year! Who am I to argue? When the ebook reached the Amazon bestsellers list in its category and the paperback and audiobook (with all twenty-four roles played by Michael Gilboe) sold like tickets to Aladdin after the Tony Awards, it was time for another Nicky and Noah mystery.

What was the plot of Drama Queen?

In Drama Queen college theatre professors were dropping like stage curtains and amateur sleuths/college theatre professors Nicky and Noah had to use their theatre skills, including impersonating other people, to figure out whodunit.

What is the storyline of Drama Muscle, the current Nicky and Noah mystery?

In Drama Muscle Nicky and Noah don their gay Holmes and Watson personas again to find out who is murdering musclemen in the Bodybuilding Department. In the novel Nicky is directing bodybuilding students in Treemeadow College’s annual Bodybuilding competition on campus. Bodybuilding students and faculty drop faster than barbells until Nicky figures out the identity of the murderer, as well as Noah’s secret revolving around Van Granite, one of the bodybuilding professors. Noah’s hysterically funny parents visit from Wisconsin and are drawn into the action, and Nicky and Noah reach a milestone by the end of the novel.

Why did you set the second novel in the Bodybuilding Department?

I have always been fascinated with bodybuilders. The concept of eating protein every two hours, lifting weights for three hours a day, shaving every body part, spray tanning, and posing in tiny gold trunks is amazing to me. Not to mention the muscles! After watching a bodybuilding competition on television (I admit it!) I noticed the link between bodybuilding and theatre. So I decided the second Nicky and Noah mystery would take place in the Bodybuilding Department at Treemeadow College.

How do you think up all the clues, red herrings, and surprises in the novel?

I learned from the best! I’ve read every Agatha Christie novel and play many times. She is a genius at outlining when and where to give the reader what information. I love the inversion in her books, where she uses sleight of hand to lay out all the information, but not in a straight forward manner. The reader becomes the sleuth to put all the pieces of the puzzle together. I also learned from reading many writers like Armistead Maupin how to write quirky, zany, but lovable characters.

Nicky is described as having an enormous manhood. Does that help him solve the murders?

It doesn’t hurt. Well, maybe it does. Hah. Nicky has to flirt his way into some places to get certain information, so his handsome face, muscular body, and huge penis are definitely assets. Even more, however, Nicky and Noah use their theatre skills, including playing other people, to get clues. Most of all, Nicky uses his smarts, always a fine asset in an amateur detective. Nicky has such amazing wit, perseverance in the face of adversity, and smarts. I love his sense of determination in not only nabbing the murderer, but also getting his man—Noah. Nicky knows what he wants and how to get it. He is genuinely concerned for others, and he wants to help them. He also has no problem taking on the role of hero. Finally, he is a one-man man, and Nicky is proud to admit that man is Noah Oliver. However, my favorite character in book two is Noah’s mother who is devoted to her son—almost as much as she’s devoted to her camera!

Your Dreamspinner Press novellas (An Infatuation, A Shooting Star, A Home for the Holidays, and the upcoming (January 27) The Naked Prince and Other Tales from Fairyland) were so well received. What do you say to people who loved them and might be surprised that the Nicky and Noah mysteries are quite different?

I love eggs but I also love oatmeal. It’s the same thing. I’d ask them to give Drama Queen and Drama Muscle a try. Like I found eating liver and onions as a kid, they may acquire a different taste.

What did you learn about reviews after Drama Queen?

Drama Queen got mostly great reviews from review sites, bloggers, and readers. I learned to concentrate on those reviews and not read the few negative ones. Writers (like everyone else) need to be supported and encouraged, not torn down. We don’t do it for the money, we do it for the love of our books and our readers. We put our hearts out there to be embraced not stamped on. If you don’t like a book, stop reading it after chapter one and read something else. Why write a scathing review?

What advice do you have for unpublished writers?

Write every day. When you have a story you think is perfect, ask someone you trust to read it. Then after doing another draft, email it to a publisher with an open submissions policy who publishes the kind of story you’ve written. If that publisher rejects it, immediately send it to the next one.

Is it hard to write comedy?

I’ve always had a funny mind. I can hear almost anything and see the humor in it. I think I get this from my mother. For example, for Christmas one year my parents bought me a sweater and my sister a house. When I asked my mother if I was an orphan, she replied, “Orphans don’t have sweaters. Appreciate what you have. And by the way, it cost me $39.99.”

Why do you write gay fiction?

Obviously gay stories are part of my life. Also, there are still many untold stories about gay people. Go to the mall and look at the movie posters sans any gay characters on them. What does that say to the teenagers in those malls?

You have another mystery series. Tell us about your Jana Lane mystery series.

I created a heroine who was the biggest child star ever until she was attacked on the studio lot at eighteen years old. In Paper Doll (Whiskey Creek Press), Jana at thirty-eight lives with her family in a mansion in picturesque Hudson Valley, New York. Her flashbacks from the past become murder attempts in her future. Forced to summon up the lost courage she had as a child, Jana ventures back to Hollywood, which helps her uncover a web of secrets about everyone she loves. She also embarks on a romance with the devilishly handsome son of her old producer, Rocco Cavoto. In Porcelain Doll (The Wild Rose Press releasing March 15), Jana makes a comeback film and uncovers who is being murdered on the set and why. Her heart is set aflutter by her incredibly gorgeous co-star, Jason Apollo. In Satin Doll (not yet released from The Wild Rose Press), Jana and family head to Washington, DC, where Jana plays a US senator in a new film, and becomes embroiled in a murder and corruption at the senate chamber. She also embarks on a romance with Chris Bruno, the muscular detective. In China Doll (not yet released from The Wild Rose Press), Jana heads to New York City to star in a Broadway play, enchanted by her gorgeous co-star Peter Stevens, and faced with murder on stage and off. Since the novels take place in the 1980’s, Jana’s agent and best friend are gay, and Jana is somewhat of a gay activist, the AIDS epidemic is a large part of the novels.

What’s next for you as a writer?

Nine Star Press is publishing my two novels that take place at a gay summer resort on the Jersey Shore: Cozzi Cove: Bouncing Back and Cozzi Cove: Moving Forward.

How do you feel about straight women writing and reading gay romance novels?

Bravo for them!

Like Drama Queen is Drama Muscle available as an ebook, paperbook, and audiobook?

The ebook and paperback are out. This gives the reader an option to read it on a Kindle, Nook, computer, or with book in hand on the beach or in bed. The audiobook, again performed by the amazing Michael Gilboe, will be out shortly.

How can your readers get their hands on Drama Muscle, and how can they contact you?

The purchase links for Drama Muscle are below, as are my contact links, including my web site. I love to hear from readers! So give Nicky and Noah a read and contact me via my web site. Let’s all pump up!

Excerpt

As the ethereal sound of horns parted the heavenly clouds, the young gods and goddesses appeared in a ray of white light. Standing as strong as the stone columns behind them, the deities displayed stunning muscles, colossal beauty, and mammoth ambition housed in the smallest and most seductive of white garments. Lightning flashed as they formed a resilient line and each struck their first flawless pose. Zeus was dark-skinned and as powerful as thunder. Ganymede at his side had skin of white porcelain and a clever stare. Hercules and Adonis were the perfect blend of masculine vigor and physical splendor. Athena was a gorgeous, olive-skinned warrior, and Aphrodite a lovely, fair-skinned temptress. Achilles watched them all, vowing to be victorious in the end.

“Good work, everyone!”

That was me, Nicky Abbondanza, Professor of Directing at Treemeadow College, a white-stone Edwardian-style private college in the quaint and picturesque village of Treemeadow in the equally quaint and picturesque state of Vermont. As inscribed on the two bronze statues at the college’s entrance, the college’s name comes from its founders, Harold Tree and Jacob Meadow. Tree and Meadow were madly wealthy, madly generous, and madly in love. The old gents would no doubt be proud to know that Noah Oliver (Professor of Acting) and I have become a current generation couple at Treemeadow College. That’s not to say Noah and I look anything like our college’s founders. We aren’t made of bronze for one. We wear dress shirts, slacks, and blazers in the fall season rather than heavy dark suits. Also, the Treemeadows were small, thin, scholarly types. Noah and I are both tall. I am of the dark hair, long sideburns, Roman nose, pumped body (thanks to the gym on campus) variety. Oh, there’s one other small thing. Well, it’s not really small. To the delight or horror of my past boyfriends, I have a nine-and-a-quarter-inch penis—flaccid. Luckily, Noah is delighted and totally open (pardon the pun) to new adventures. Noah has luxurious curly-blond hair, batting blue eyes, and the warmest heart in New England. His body is firm and smooth, but not toned as he never goes near the gym—until now!

Each year the top students in the Bodybuilding Department compete in a contest to be named the Top Toned Tan Trojan at Treemeadow (Try saying that three times fast). Actually, the real name is Treemeadow’s Annual Bodybuilding Competition. The winner receives an enormous gold cup, and more importantly, the year’s college tuition free. Given the rising cost of tuition at Treemeadow, this is no lightweight matter (pardon the pun again).

Bodybuilding Department Head Professor Brick Strong asked my Theatre Department Head, Martin Anderson, if Noah and I could use our theatrical expertise to add a dramatic flair to this year’s bodybuilding competition. Since I was not directing a play that semester, Martin agreed to give Noah and me release time, thereby changing our mantra from “Let’s put on a show” to “I’m gonna pump you up.” That led to Noah and me hauling lighting, smoke, sound, and set equipment, along with a number of skimpy Greek period costumes, from the Theatre Department building to the Physical Education building. The plan was that I, as a directing professor, would direct the production, and Noah, as an acting professor, would work with the student-athletes on stage presence for their individual poses.

“Okay everyone, Professor Oliver will take it from here.” I stepped aside and leaned against the gym wall.

Noah flicked back his gorgeous blond locks and took my place in front of the students like a new king taking the throne after a revolution. Sounding delectably butch, he said, “Let’s take a little time to discuss each of your characters. The Greek period was a—”

“That’s the period we’ve selected for the competition in terms of characters, set, and costumes,” I said.

Noah smiled in my direction.

I think Noah and I are the perfect couple. “Rodney, we know that your character, Zeus, was the father of gods and men—” Rodney Towers was tall, dark, and massive with muscle. “—which is why your toga has a thunderbolt on it,” I said.

Noah stiffened.

“I’m always happy to help,” I said.

“So I see.”

“But Professor Oliver is totally in charge now. So everyone, please listen to Professor Oliver,” I said.

“Thank you.” Focusing back on Zeus, rather Rodney, Noah said, “The Greek gods in mythology were part god and part human—”

“Which is why I selected this motif for the competition. You all have human emotion, but your strength and powers are supernatural.”

“Right,” said Noah with a tight jaw.

I folded my arms across my chest. “Professor Oliver is really good at working on character development, so pay close attention to him.”

Noah took in a deep breath. “And the Greek gods were quite amorous—”

“With both sexes,” I said. “Zeus and Ganymede were just one pair of famous lovers who influenced the arts.”

“Excuse me, everyone.” Noah put a hand on my shoulder and ushered me to a corner of the gym. “Nicky, I appreciate your help, but—”

I put my arm around Noah. “You don’t need to thank me. I love you, and I am always here to help you.”

“Well can you please…stop?”

“Did I say something wrong?” I asked dumbfounded.

“I would like to be able to finish a sentence! Will you let me do that?”

“Of course.”

“Thank you.”

“I won’t say another word,” I said as we walked back to the students.

“Promise?” Noah whispered in my ear.

“Of course.” I looked at my watch. “You should move the rehearsal along, since there’s lots more to do.”

BLURB

All his life, Jacen’s had a crush on his brother’s best friend. One night, they share a kiss, but Kayne isn’t his to love. Now, Jacen’s been beaten up, and he flees back to Queensland. Kayne’s no longer with his wife and is raising his son. Will lifelong love win out?

Jacen Ives was living a lie. Being in a relationship with a person he couldn’t fully love was only a small part of the problems in his life. The truth was, he was hiding away from the one man he always knew he was meant to love. Jacen left his home in Queensland to get away from Kayne Henderson and the family he was making for himself. Distance didn’t help because his heart could never forget.

Mistakes made as a teenager set Kayne’s future in place, so–with one last kiss goodbye–he lied, and let his heart walk away from him–his best friend’s younger brother. They say time heals all wounds; what a crock. Sometimes, all time does is just confuse the matter. Especially when Kayne has a soon-to-be ex-wife and a young son to raise.

Years later, after letting Jacen walk away, he finds Jacen has finally come home. Everything is not good; Jacen has been both physically and mentally abused by his ex-boyfriend. Kayne needs to help find out just who is trying to destroy Jacen’s life. Who’s to blame–the man responsible for beating Jacen up or Kayne’s very own ex, who has hated Jacen since they were all teenagers and she found out Jacen held Kayne’s heart? Or is there someone new on the playing field? If so, which one of them are they truly after?

EXCERPT

For the past couple of days Micah had been in a foul mood. He was taking his anger out on whoever was handy, and seeing as they worked side by side, more often than not it was aimed Kayne’s way. Having had enough, Kayne finally asked, “What has your panties in a bunch?”

“Jacen. That’s what,” Micah snapped. “He was supposed to call me back three days ago and I haven’t heard a word from him.”

“What?” Kayne couldn’t imagine Jacen pissing Micah off like this.

“I was seeing when he was getting here for the wedding and if he was bringing George the wanker with him. He said he’d talk to George and get back to me. He never did.”

The mere mention of Micah’s younger brother had Kayne’s guts twisting into an iron knot. For so long, Jacen had managed to affect him. Even more now that his relationship with his wife was almost over.

“How is he?” He hoped his voice sounded normal.

Micah turned and glared at him. “How the hell would I know? The twit hasn’t gotten back to me yet. He won’t answer my calls. I left him a shitload of messages. It’s like he’s dropped off the face of the earth.”

“You didn’t fight with him, did you? You know the more you push, the more he’ll dig his feet in.” Kayne knew the two brothers were close, but he also remembered they could fight like cats and dogs when they wanted to. By the look on his friend’s face, he knew this wasn’t the first time he’d been asked.

When Micah next spoke, his suspicions were confirmed. “Have you already been talking to Sammy today?”

“No. I just know what you’re like. So spill it. What did you do?”

Micah snorted out a laugh before he answered. “I wanted Jacen to stay longer, so I may or may not have told him to send George home while he had a holiday with us.”

Somehow Kayne knew if Jacen was ignoring Micah, then there had to be more to the story. “And?”

“And I may have also told him to move back to Queensland because he could start his business anywhere,” Micah added a little sheepishly.

“You do realise you insulted his boyfriend and his profession in the same breath, right?”

“Well, his boyfriend’s a douche.” Micah snarled.

Kayne totally agreed with the statement, but more so because he didn’t think anyone except he himself would make a good partner for Jacen. Almost a decade had gone by and he still had intense feelings for the guy he could never really have. He had screwed his life up the day he’d let Teagan blackmail him. By the time he’d realised what was happening, it was too late. Jacen was gone and Teagan was pregnant. The only good thing to come out of the whole fucked up marriage was Macen.

His face must have showed some sort of emotion because Micah startled him when he spoke again. “Are you all right? Here I am ranting about my dumbarse brother when your life is in just as much turmoil as his. I still can’t believe Teagan walked out on you and Mace. Were there any signs to tell you what was happening?”

“There were signs, but to be honest, I didn’t care. I’m just pissed she’s wiped Mace from her life as well. He’s six. Hell, he’s still trying to figure out what he did wrong to make her leave.”

As they left work for the day, they sat on the tailgate of Kayne’s ute. “That’s some fucked up shit. I hope you told him he didn’t do anything.”

“You know I have. I’m just thankful when she told us to get out of the house that she gave us time to grab our things…and Squirt. Mace would be lost without his damn dog. We’re also lucky you and Sammy took us in on such short notice.”

“That’s what friends are for, plus Sammy loves having Macen around to dote on,” Micah said.

Forever thankful at the generosity of his friends, he knew it couldn’t stay as it was. Eventually he and Macen would have to find their own place, even if just to let Squirt have a yard to run around once more. “We’ll get our own place soon enough.”

“There’s no hurry,” Micah insisted.

“Come on. Let’s go home to give Sammy a break from babysitting duty. As much as Mace loves helping him plan your dad’s wedding, I get the feeling Mace is more of a hindrance than a help.”

EXCERPT: Moonlit Escapades (Moonlit Wolves 7.5) by Bronwyn Heeley

Moonlit Wolves 7.5Moonlit Escapades (Moonlit Wolves 7.5)

Blurb

There is never a time when a visit from old friends isn’t comforting.

Ever wonder how Jex and Matt ended up in that compromising position in book 4? Or what the fight between Phil and Craig was about? Or how about how they all became so close and ended up living together?

Well, here’s your chance. All the missing pieces that were linked but not fully explained are bundled together in this heart-warming anthology, and just in time for Christmas, because who doesn’t like to visit from family at this time of year.

Note: series must be read in order, but these shorts can be read separately, they’ll just be enjoyed more as companions.

Excerpt

Jex let out a sigh of relief as he sat back into the lounge. Matt and he hadn’t been in this house for a long time, but he had definitely felt more at home quicker than at any of the other place his father took him.

However, his dad hadn’t been the kindest person, and they’d moved from one town to the next, leaving many people hating him because of what his father had done. Matt, with a quick kidnapping and a much-needed getaway, brought Jex to this lovely little town out in the boondocks, an unlikely place his father would never bother to look.

They’d reached town and a house full to the brim with men. Matt’s cousin and a bunch of mates had taken them both in and treated Jex like no one had done before Matt.

Jex loved the freedom of being himself, even if they all turned out to be a werewolf every time the moon was full. A lot to take in, but he had seen a lot of violence and bullshit in his life, so the werewolf factor seemed like a cakewalk.

In addition, he’d personally seen Matt change, so who was he to say something didn’t exist?

A cold bottle tapped on his shoulder, making Jex look over his shoulder. He took the bottle.

Taking a long drink of this piss-shit that the bottle label said was beer, he studied Matt. His lover rounded the couch and sat down next to him. Jex wasn’t a fan of Tooheys, he was more a VB man, but beggars couldn’t be choosers—or, more for him, lazy arses deserved to drink horse piss. He was, however, a fan of the man—tall, blonde, with deep-set eyes. He was like a walking wet dream. Someone who needed to be naked and fucking so everyone would see his true beauty.

He was a fucking dream. Jex’s dream. Even if it had taken the guy a couple of turns to realise just how Matt liked it when Jex fucked him and then give him more than he’d ever understood he wanted. Jex reckoned it came from the fact that he hadn’t ever been free to actually fuck another person before Matt.

“Taste like shit?” Matt chuckled next to him.

For the first time in a long time—and yet not a first for the thought—Jex wondered what he saw in a man who actually liked this shit.

“Why ask when you know the answer,” Jex spat back at him around another mouthful of beer. He was hoping if he drank it fast enough and got the buzz of beer in his system, it might actually start tasting nice.

Matt shook his head really slowly. That you’re fucking crazy shake, though the twitch of his lips held the joke.

“Fucking arse,” Jex muttered, finishing off his first bottle with a cringe—Fuck! This shit was bad.

Matt chuckled again. “Ah, but that’s what you love ‘bout me.”

Jex shook his head, a small smile pulling at his lips at the words, only his mouth hadn’t even completed the move before Matt’s lips covered his. The move Jex had been waiting for finally came. He snickered softly into Matt’s mouth. They were alone after all.

“It makes me feel all gooey inside to see you smile like that, and knowing it’s all mine… gets me hot as hell,” Matt whispered, a breath away from Jex’s lips.

Jex’s back arched at the scrape of whiskers against his upper lip. “Gooey?” Jex tried to make it a joke, not being able to deal with the softer sides of love.

“Oh, yeah,” Matt moaned theatrically. “It’s like melted lava inside me, mate.”

“So you’re a cooked marshmallow?” Jex muttered between the light kisses Matt was giving him. He needed more than the teasing. Already his skin was hot, his cock throbbed. He hated the teasing. Jex needed more… rubbing, thrusting, harder!

“Cooked Marshmallow?” Matt pulled back, apparently, finally, thinking around his own cock to what Jex had said.

“Shut up, man.” Jex laughed. “How can I think with my cock this hard?”

Matt burst out into laughter. Jex shifted back as Matt’s weight transferred onto his knees, since he’d straddled Jex sometime during the kiss.

Guest Post

Today I am talking about an anthology for my Moonlit Wolves series, It’s a fun little book that captures parts and explain parts of certain books that were in the story but weren’t really part of it. I didn’t want to take away the forces on the series and was advised against putting these shorts (they weren’t as created as they are in this book) into the back of the books, however I still had them and I thought they needed a book all for themselves. So I filled them up so that not only will it give fans of the series something special, but also allow others to come in and see what the series is about, get a little taste.

However, this means that a lot of the stories heavily feature couples I thought I’d talk more about the series

Why should we read the series?

This series is a fast paced manga style series, which follows the lives of a group of young men trying to just live. They only really know so much about themselves so all they’re able to do is deal with one problem at a time.

There is 6 original boys, Colin, Kyle, Gene, Chris Adam and James, who all grew up together, got bitten at the same time, and generally become the first part of the family.

The first arc in this series of, well, there’ll be 30 books all up, is about them, learning who they are, falling in love and fighting for, well, their lives.

It can get dark and graphic and some of the books could use another go through editing, but if you let the story flow around you you’ll fall in love with each and every character.

From book 2 to book 7 needs to be read in order, they are very tightly connected (with the slight excepting of book 5, though it’s still needed).

I feel it’s a very original paranormal, the same troupe everyone has read and written, but in a slight different style with the gore that I felt was missing in those other books. They’re light reads, they move quickly and they are just a little more than the light fluffy paranormal romance you normally read. Hell, they might be more erotic than romance, but it’s there, in the pages. Each character is falling and they are falling fast, they just might not tell each other with words.

The series  so far, which needs to be read in order

  • Loved By A Werewolf (this one does not need to be read to enjoy the series)
  • Forever With My Werewolf
  • Seeking My Werewolf
  • Taking Control of My Werewolf
  • A Werewolf’s Howl
  • The Rub of My Werewolf
  • Protecting My Werewolf
  • Moonlit Escapades
