Samantha Cayto

Bio: Samantha Cayto is a Boston-area native who practices as a business lawyer by day while writing erotic romance at night—the steamier the better. She likes to push the envelope when it comes to writing about passion and is delighted other women agree that guy-on-guy sex is the hottest ever.

She lives a typical suburban life with her husband, three kids and four dogs. Her children don’t understand why they can’t read what she writes, but her husband is always willing to lend her a hand—and anything else—when she needs to choreograph a scene.

The Captain’s Pet:

thecaptainspet_800This is book one in the Alien Slave Masters series.

When a distant planet’s ownership is in dispute, conquering aliens turn defiant human males into pampered sex slaves.

In a not-too-distant future, a lopsided war has led to aliens invading and occupying an Earth settlement. Wid is a young colonist who has been caught harassing the aliens. He and his friends are rounded up and sent to an alien warship patrolling the disputed space. His fate is to serve as a sex slave for the ship’s imposing captain. Wid, at first, fights against his enslavement, but soon learns that not only does he stand no chance against the much larger and stronger captain, he isn’t sure he even wants to.

Like all Travian males, Kell is bound by duty to defend his people. Having risen to the rank of captain, he nevertheless chafes against the boring and endless patrol of the space invaded by the humans. His misses his family and constantly guards against his scheming first officer. He sees his reward of a human sex slave as more of a nuisance. Yet the pretty, fair-haired human’s exotic allure is hard to resist. He finds far more pleasure in the use of his pet than he would like.

Kept naked and leashed, Wid’s days are filled with boredom, while his nights wrapped in Kell’s arms turn from fear into pleasure. Even as the humans plot their escape, Wid and Kell form a bond and their growing affection cannot be ignored. When tensions boil over among the aliens, Wid and his friends may be Kell and his crew’s only chance for survival.

Reader Advisory: This book contains sex scenes of both non-consensual and dubious consent, as well as scenes of violence, abuse and torture.

SA Welsh

Bio: I’m SA Welsh and I write because the voices in my head keep making me. I love reading and I love letting the characters and stories in my head come to life in a book. I can’t function in the morning without a cup of tea and when I’m not writing I’m reading. I have enough books to last me through an apocalypse but don’t ask me to share them unless you are a fellow book worm and know how to treat and appreciate a good book. It is thanks to the writers that inspired me to put myself out there that I became an author and the editors that make sense of my chaos that I keep writing.

Scott Alexander Hess

Today we are joined by Scott Alexander Hess, author of The Butcher’s Sons, out now from Lethe Press.

Guest Post – The Intricacy of Masculinity

That singular word drew me initially into the writing of my latest novel, The Butcher’s Sons, set in a gritty butcher shop in Hell’s Kitchen New York City circa 1930. As I explored the word and concept, my research guided me back to early images of men including my father (who built our St. Louis family home as well as launching a restaurant equipment company) and to my two older brothers (the inspiration for the novel’s rough and tumble siblings Walt and Dickie).

While I had considered myself strong and at times courageous through my life, I did not consider myself masculine, at least not in the traditional sense. That changed through the writing of The Butcher’s Sons, as did my perceptions of the word masculinity itself.

Seeing the world through the eyes of the character Dickie, I discovered in myself a base connection to a gutsy, violence-infused quest for power, domination and respect. This trait, though associated with masculinity, is in essence war like, brutal and in some ways sexless. In writing the gentler middle brother Walt and even more so the youngest, fragile and secretly gay brother Adlai, I uncovered a wide range of characteristics that were shaded with variations of what may be considered masculine.

In essence, the writing of these three very different brothers cracked open a broader appreciation for, and definition of, what it is to be masculine and to consider the concept’s more subtle edges.

Dickie’s form of masculinity is all violent bravado as in the scene below from Part One, Chapter 12:

“We’re The Butcher’s” Dickie said.

The fat kid swiped at his brow, scrunched his forehead.

“Oh yeah, so the fuck what? Get out of here you dirty Mick. We got business.”

Dickie flinched. The chimes swayed and as the kid turned to notice the sound, summoned by some stray memory of some stray summer, caught off guard by that delicate phrase of sweetness, as he turned Dickie lifted the heavy jar of pickles and slammed it into the kid’s head.

Bug was touching the chimes, making them dance, and he kept that up as the kid squealed and fell to his knees, blood spurting out of the side of his head, one shard of glass from the expertly shattered jar holding firm just above his ear, gushing. Dickie bent to the floor, plucking the shard from the kid’s head.

“I’m Dickie, leader of The Butcher’s, Now we’ve met,” he said.

I discovered a more layered level of masculinity and strength in the character of young Adlai, who against the odds, discovers love through the novel, and more importantly comes to embrace himself as a man. The scene below from Part Three, Chapter 12, is part of his awakening:

Adlai stood naked for a moment, then gently, lowered himself down to a lying position in the creek, so the water was forced to rush around him, as if he were a torn branch fallen from storm. The cooling water swarmed around his head, swirling out and into and through him. He was mostly submerged, though not fully, He felt the water like gentle hands, like a rushing dream come back. With one hand he tried to cup water to bring it to his parched lips, but it kept spilling out, so he flipped over and let water gush into his mouth, rushing forcefully, as if molesting and bruising his lips, chocking him. So thirsty, he gulped, then flipped over again, letting the coolness take him.

He wondered if Ed could fit next to him, the bulk of that man in the narrow creek. Looking up, he again spied the moon, and for the first time that night, that week really, the insect’s music, which was awash with the gentle cry of the creek, comforted him. It was as if they were singing for him, as if it were a love song, a lullaby.

Ultimately, the novel also shed light on parallels in my father’s more traditionally masculine creative life and my own. His building of our home, the late night sawing and nailing during the summer of 1954 under a hot Missouri moon; and my own evening discipline, at my writing desk near a wide open New York City window, constructing long, winding sentences and discovering characters that were to become The Butcher’s Sons.

We both, I realized are explorers, men of strength and conviction.

Butcher's Sons _ HiRes

About the Book

Bound by blood but separated by secrets, brothers—Dickie, Walt and Adlai—run a butcher shop for their alcoholic father, whose broken spirit has isolated him from the world. When Dickie makes a rash decision, involving an organized crime family, a chain of events ensues that changes the brothers’ lives and forces them to come together— at first, with a sense of camaraderie, but ultimately, with something much fiercer, more brutal. The Butcher’s Sons is a gritty, intimate portrait of three young Irish-American brothers whose lives irrevocably change during a heat wave in New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen, circa 1930.

 Beyond the Surface

Felice Stevens

Release Date: August 17, 2015

Pages or Words: Approximately 78,000 words

Categories: Contemporary, M/M Romance

Publisher: Felice Stevens

Cover Artist: Reese Dante

On 9/11 firefighter Nick Fletcher’s world changed forever. He’s unable to rid himself of survivor’s guilt

made worse by the secret he hides from his family and co-workers. Nick’s life is centered around helping burn victims until he is reunited with the man he’d once loved but pushed away. Now he has a second chance at a love he thought lost forever.

For fashion designer Julian Cornell appearances mean everything. His love affairs are strictly casual

and the only thing he cares about is making his clothing line a success. A chance encounter with the man he loved long ago has Julian thinking for the first time in years there may be more to life than being seen at the best parties and what designer labels to wear.

When Julian’s world takes an unexpected turn it’s Nick who helps him regain perspective on what matters most in life. Julian in turn helps Nick accept who he is and understand he isn’t responsible for tragedies he couldn’t prevent. Lost love found can be even sweeter the second time around and after all the years apart both men learn to look beyond the surface to find the men they are inside.

Julian was in the kitchen, sitting on one of the stools by the counter. He had a glass in front of him filled with what Nick presumed was vodka, having spied the Grey Goose bottle.

“Would you like a drink? I have beer, wine…anything you’d like.”

Nick shook his head, regret piercing his heart as he watched the hope drain from Julian’s eyes.

“I don’t think so. I’m going to head home. I want you to know how much I appreciate what you did for Jamal tonight.”

Julian stood abruptly, kicking the stool away from his feet.

“Don’t treat me like I’m some fucking stranger, Nicky. You owe me. It’s been eighteen years; you think I’m going to let you walk out on me again like you did before? After what just happened between us? After you fell apart? No fucking way. I’m not that same person and neither are you, obviously.”

Taken aback by Julian’s anger, Nick remained mute.

“What the hell is going on with you? One minute you’re tongue fucking me into the next century and the next you’re freaking out. I know I’m a damn good kisser, but this isn’t about us, is it? It has nothing to do with our past and everything to do with you and the shit that’s floating around in your head.”

Julian stepped closer to him and Nick, who normally couldn’t stand people near him, was rooted to the floor, unable to move.

“Talk to me, Nicky. Tell me what happened to you.”

He was so tired of holding himself together, feeling like at any moment he’d shatter into a million tiny pieces, leaving nothing behind but a pile of dust.

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.

The words poured out of him, flowing unchecked this time. “It should’ve been me. We all went to the Towers to save them. It was my day off, but I went anyway. I heard and couldn’t stay home; I had a duty to help, you know? But I lived and they all died. Why, Julian? Why did I live and they didn’t?”

“Oh, Nick.” Julian held him close. “I don’t have the answers for you. No one does. But I’m going to be completely selfish and say I’m so thankful you did make it and we’re here together after all these years.”

Unflinching green eyes gazed back at him. Clever, beautiful eyes that Nick could never stop dreaming of. Eyes that at one time had held the promise of forever, until Nick ruined everything with his cowardice and shame. Unable to maintain Julian’s scrutiny, Nick broke away and ran to the elevator, his chest heaving, eyes stinging with tears.

“Let me out. I need to leave here. NOW.”

About the author:

I have always been a romantic at heart. I believe that while life is tough, there is always a happy ending just around the corner. I started reading traditional historical romances when I was a teenager, then life and law school got in the way. It wasn’t until I picked up a copy of Bertrice Small and became swept away to Queen Elizabeth’s court that my interest in romance novels became renewed.

But somewhere along the way, my tastes shifted. While I still enjoys a juicy Historical romance, I began experimenting with newer, more cutting edge genres and discovered the world of Male/Male romance. Once I picked up her first, I became so enamored of the authors, the character-driven stories and the overwhelming emotion of the books, I knew I wanted to write my own.

I live in New York City with my husband and two children and hopefully soon a cat of my own. My day begins with a lot of caffeine and ends with a glass or two of red wine. I practice law but daydream of a time when I can sit by a beach somewhere and write beautiful stories of men falling in love. Although there is bound to be angst along the way, a Happily Ever After is always guaranteed.

BLOG TOUR, EXCERPT AND GIVEAWAY! What No One Else Can Hear by Brynn Stein

What No One Else Can Hear

Brynn Stein

Young Stevie Liston is diagnosed with autism, but is really an overwhelmed empath who mentally called out for help. Jesse McKinnon heard him in a dream from clear across the country, and that dream sent him on a six-year search to find Stevie. Once they meet, they think everything will work out and Jesse will help Stevie cope.

Stevie does improve immensely, but a disgruntled coworker of Jesse’s conspires with Stevie’s estranged but politically powerful father to keep Stevie and Jesse apart with trumped-up legal charges claiming Jesse sexually abused the boy. Jesse must watch helplessly as Stevie loses all the advances he’s made.

If it wasn’t for his growing relationship with his coworker Drew Ferguson, Jesse knows he wouldn’t have the strength to fight for his rights and Stevie’s future. Drew just might be the real thing, but with the very real possibility of serving jail time for a crime he didn’t commit, Jesse’s hopes for a future with Drew might be doomed

I COULDN’T believe it. I stood in the doorway of a child’s room on the third floor of the Lynneville Center for Children with Autism after having been hastily hired and sent up here. At first I was shocked to see dozens of expertly drawn pictures of me taped up all over the walls. Then I noticed the four worried-looking adults in the room, their attention focused on the bed. In that bed, seemingly catatonic, was the very boy I’d been seeing in my dreams for almost six years.

I had been looking for Stevie all that time, but now that I had found him, I realized that until that moment I’d always had the smallest doubt that he was real—almost a hope that there wasn’t a suffering child who needed me, whom it had taken me so long to find. All my energy for six years had been focused on finding him, yet a niggling doubt had remained … until I stepped through that doorway.

“Stevie,” I whispered. “I finally found you.”

He didn’t move; he only blinked on reflex. He simply lay on the bed, so still, and stared at the ceiling. I knew I could help him. I moved to his side, nudging the doctor out of the way, and touched his hand.

“Come on, man. Come on back now.” I put my hand on his head, and Stevie immediately turned his head toward me. Though his eyes were still a little unfocused, he had no trouble recognizing me.

“Hi, Bear,” he said and reached out to be hugged, as he always had in my dreams.

It was so natural for Stevie to talk to me and hug me that it didn’t occur to me it might be strange for the staff gathered in Stevie’s room. They were suddenly doing the best imitations of goldfish I had ever seen. The doctor and the other man had comically wide eyes, while the two women looked almost ready to cry from shock or maybe just relief.

The older one, a lady in her forties, seemed to recognize my confusion. She came to stand close to me and said in a hushed voice, “That’s the first time we’ve ever heard him speak.”

He always could, of course.

He spoke to me all the time in my dreams.

He finally let go and looked at me. “Bear, you’re here? You’re really here?” His gaze scanned the room. “Not in the forest?”

“No, buddy.” I laid him back down and rubbed his hand as I spoke. “Not in the forest this time. We’re right here, in your room.”

Stevie yawned and looked exhausted.

“Go to sleep, big guy. I’m working at the center now, so I’ll be waiting for you when you wake up.”

He smiled and was asleep almost immediately.

By that time the staff’s shock had worn off and curiosity had set in with a vengeance. We barely stepped out of Stevie’s room before the never-ending string of questions began.

“Bear?” “Forest?” “Stevie can talk?” The questions bombarded me simultaneously.

We all took seats in the living room area and I set about answering their questions. I was hoping what they had just witnessed would keep them from laughing me out of the room. The story I had to tell them was pretty spectacular.

Dottie, the lady in her forties, started things off by introducing me to the others. Dr. Brown was the physician on staff and had been watching Stevie decline over the last several months with no idea how to help him. Hank and Stacy were the other staff members who had been in Stevie’s room. They, along with Dottie, were support staff for the students who lived here, providing whatever assistance they needed, with supervision and compassion. Other people working on the hall that night wanted to hear as much of the story as possible, so they came and went, working when needed, listening when they could, as did Dottie, Hank, and Stacy.

“I don’t even begin to know where to start asking questions,” Dr. Brown finally admitted.

“The beginning is always nice,” Stacy said.

I smiled and thought Stacy had a good idea, so I told them about my first meeting with Stevie.

EXCERPT: Hope for Tomorrow by Lei Carol & Eric Thornton

Hope for tomorrow

Jed Hendrix has always put family first, doing whatever means necessary to take care his mother and younger brothers to provide for them- even if it meant breaking the law. When things catch up and he ends up in the back of a cop car with cuffs on, the last thing he expected was to be given leniency from the judge and sent to a work release ranch.
Bryson Sandreaux is a horse tamer at Second Chance Ranch. A hardworking cowboy, he doesn’t suspect he would be working with a traumatically damaged man who has more issues than Bryson could keep up with.
Between the two of them, there is tension, but definitely attraction. Is there a chance for love? Or would it all fall apart at the seams?

Jed had better never find out who had beat the kid senseless otherwise he would show the man how it felt. It royally pissed him off when people picked on someone smaller than them.
Maybe it had something to do with the way his dad had always beat his mom. He couldn’t remember a time when the man wasn’t using his fists on either of them. Of course, he couldn’t remember a time the man wasn’t drinking himself into the gutter, either.
Which was the exact reason he wouldn’t touch alcohol. Jed never wanted to lose control like his ol’ man did so often. Hell, he didn’t want to be like the man period. No how, no way.
Now, all he needed to figure out was how to get his brothers and his mother out of the man’s house before she died and his brothers were forced to turn to a life of crime. They were just kids; they didn’t need to worry about where their next meal was coming from or whether his dad was going to beat them just for breathing wrong. They just had to know where they were heading to next and have a chance at life.
As the oldest, it was his responsibility to help his mom take care of them and make sure they were on the straight and narrow but how could he do that from here.
“Hey, Jed, what’s wrong?”
He kept quiet for a moment.
Jerking out of this musings to find Bryson staring at him, worry written all over his handsome face. He could feel his cheeks heat up as the blood rushed to fill the space. Jed couldn’t believe he had allowed himself to lose focus of what he was supposed to be doing. Hopefully, Bryson wasn’t angry with him. The last thing he needed was another reason why someone hated him. He was sure there was at least some part of Bryson that wanted to teach him a lesson or two. Give him the ol’ one—two.
“I’m sorry.” He flinched for a moment. The motion almost offended Bryson. And that was what scared Jed.
“For what? You didn’t do anything wrong. I’ve always been a sucker when a man cries. I usually want to pull them into my arms and do whatever I can to fix the world for them.”
It was as though he was being treated like a normal person, a fresh breath in the right direction. Something that seemed very odd to Jed at first but he slowly accepted it.
Nodding his head in understanding, it took a few minutes for his brain to process exactly had been said. Had Bryson just said what he thought he had heard? Was it possible the man was gay and out?
Rushing to follow him out of the newly clean stall and into the next one, Jed could only stare in bewildered wonder. “Are you gay?”
He couldn’t believe it. Bryson’s cheeks burned crimson as his blush crept up his neck, over his ears and face, all the way into his hairline. It was adorable. Jed had never wanted to pull a man in his arms to kiss him senseless before in his life. But something about Bryson made his animalistic tendencies kick in and had him stiff as a board in his pants. It was then he took note of Bryson’s throbbing erection.
Oh, he had experience. Back-alley jack-off sessions and other guys sucking him off in the dark but he’d never felt the pressure of another man’s lips pressed against his own or the feeling of another man’s cock sliding across his tongue. There was never enough hours in the day, between taking care of his family, trying to find work, and just trying to survive.
“Yeah, Jed, I am. Most everyone on the ranch is gay. If you’re not, it’s cool. No one will care here. We’re chill like that. The boss man hates intolerance so whatever you do while you are here, don’t be hateful or any crap like that.”

Famous author though he may be, Alexander Montgomery is not someone you take home to meet Mother. Seriously flawed, damaged by a horrific past, he’s trying hard to claw his way back to normality. But how can anyone respect what he truly is? His therapy involves regular sessions at Study in Scarlet, an exclusive S&M club.

Then comes Sage. Tall, with black hair and blue eyes, an up-and-coming actor with impossible charm and boy-next-door good looks, he’s the perfect choice to play the leading man in a TV adaptation of Alex’s last best-seller. Even more, he is a man you introduce to your family. Which Alex would do—if he weren’t taken by another man who offers the punishments Alex prays will wipe away the past and make him the person he wants to be. Yet, perhaps there is another path to redemption. If only the solution would reach out and touch him.

The review

It feels a little strange to be saying how much I loved a book about a man punishing himself for the sins of others but I so much enjoyed this story! Susan Mac Nicol tells a wonderful tale as she pairs a very broken man with the one man who can deliver him a future.

It was heartbreaking to read of Alexander’s torment, of his traumatic past and the way he viewed himself due to the actions of others.“I’m so scared I’ll never be able to have a proper relationship, that I’ll always be on my own because no one wants damaged goods.” As well as seeing a professional psychologist, he chooses to punish himself physically during regular S&M sessions with Eric. These ‘therapy’ sessions are violent and savage and provide a direct contrast to the physical relationship that Alex shares with Sage.

Sage is gorgeous. He is also caring and very compassionate. He is so accepting of Alex’s situation, seeing the man behind the emotional and physical scars. He does make the perfect saviour.

Jealousy does play a role in the story as Sage battles with Alex’s dependency on Eric and there are ramifications as a result of Alex’s changing needs.

The plot is unique with the romance between Alex and Sage paralleling Alex’s involvement with Eric, while events occur putting lives at risk, all set against a backdrop of a TV series film set.

From my heartbreak for Alex, my pure hatred of Eric and my admiration and respect for Sage, this was an emotional journey. Highly recommended!

Do check out the book trailer!

Sage moved toward Alex swiftly and Alex flinched as if he expected him to hit him or worse. Instead, Sage pulled him close, kissing him with a hunger that he hadn’t ever felt before for a man. Alex stiffened at first and then finally relaxed into him, his arms wrapping tightly around Sage’s neck, his mouth devouring Sage’s in a kiss that seemed to swallow him whole. Alex’s hands wound themselves tightly into Sage’s hair as he ground his mouth against his, pressing his body against Sage’s, leaving no doubt how the man felt.

Alex seemed to want to meld them together as one. Eventually they needed to come up for air and when they did, they were gasping at the intensity of their passion for each other.

“Jesus, Sage, I wasn’t expecting that. I didn’t think you’d want me after that story,” Alex breathed against Sage’s mouth, driving him even crazier with desire.

Sage thought he might explode there and then. “Does this feel like a man who doesn’t want to be with you?” His voice was low as he ran his hands over Alex’s hips, pressing himself against him.

Both men moaned at feeling their hardness against each other’s stomachs. Alex reached down to caress Sage’s groin.

“God, don’t do that,” Sage groaned. “I’m barely holding it in as it is.”

Alex’s low chuckle made Sage’s control even more difficult as Alex reached out first to turn out the light Sage had originally come to switch off, then to pull Sage over to the two -seater couch in the corner of the office. The room was now pitch dark with only the dim streets lights from outside shining through.

“It’s not the Ritz but it’ll have to do. I so want you to fuck me, Sage. It’s all I’ve been thinking about for weeks,” Alex murmured, unzipping his jeans, tugging them and his silk boxers down over his hips.

His erection sprung out, ready and glistening with moisture. Sage couldn’t take his eyes off it as he yanked down his own pants. Alex reached out and pulled Sage’s shirt over his head, then slid a hand through his chest hair and his shoulders. Sage closed his eyes at Alex’s touch, feeling himself stiffen even more, his breath ragged and deep.

“Christ, Alex,” Sage murmured, knowing his limits and conscious that he’d reached most of them. “I’m not made of bloody steel, and you’ve been driving me crazy for weeks as well.”

“I have to leave my shirt on, Sage.” Alex’s voice was filled with resolve. “I’m not ready to take it off yet.”

Sage nodded. “If that’s what you want.” His hands stroked Alex’s back through the fabric, feeling the play of the man’s muscles beneath his eager fingers. He pushed Alex back onto the studio couch, covering him with his own body, so the men’s cocks were sandwiched together, skin to skin, slickness to slickness.

“No foreplay needed,” Alex whispered in his ear, his breath tickling the sensitive skin . “I just want to feel you inside me. It’s all I want right now.”

About Susan

64729591Susan Mac Nicol is a self confessed bookaholic, an avid watcher of videos of sexy pole dancing men, geek, nerd and in love with her Smartphone. This little treasure is called ‘the boyfriend’ by her long suffering husband, who says if it vibrated, there’d be no need for him. Susan hasn’t had the heart to tell him there’s an app for that…

She is never happier than when sitting in the confines of her living room/study/on a cold station platform scribbling down words and making two men fall in love. She is a romantic at heart and believes that everything happens (for the most part) for a reason.  She likes to think of herself as a ‘half full’ kinda gal, although sometimes that philosophy is sorely tested.

Lover of walks in the forest, theatre productions, dabbling her toes in the cold North Sea and the vibrant city of London where you can experience all four seasons in a day , she is a hater of pantomime (so please don’t tar and feather her), duplicitous people, bigotry and self righteous idiots.

In an ideal world, Susan Mac Nicol would be Queen of England and banish all the bad people to the Never Never Lands of Wherever -Who Cares. As that’s never going to happen, she contents herself with writing her HEA stories and pretending, that just for a little while, good things happen to good people.

Title: The Baker

Series: Workplace Encounters

Author: Serena Yates

Publisher: Dreamspinner Press

Cover Artist: L.C. Chase

Length: 40000 words

Release Date: July 15, 2015

Blurb: Ian Wallace works as a baker for his tyrannical father in their family owned Scottish Bakehouse in Casper, Wyoming. He wants to represent the bakery in the upcoming Tartan Day competition, but his father refuses to reveal the secret ingredients that make them so successful—unless Ian gets married and has a son, proving he is fit to continue the family line.

Just before New Year’s Eve, Cameron Lewis, a former Marine turned police detective, comes into the bakery for donuts for his department and some black buns for himself. Cameron is hooked, and as his visits become more frequent, they stir Ian’s father’s suspicions. But threats can’t stop Ian from donning his kilt and entering the competition anyway—to show his father what he can do on his own. Though he might not have the secret ingredients, Ian and Cameron might still discover a recipe for happiness.

Thanks for joining us today, Serena. Congratulations on our new release.  We are also happy to have the opportunity to ask you some questions.

The Baker is the 6thth book in the Workplace Encounters series. How did the inspiration for the series come about?

Serena: I think it was a combination of things. There are lots of office romances where people fall in love with their bosses, or assistants, or colleagues. And there is something wonderfully “forbidden” about that. But I was looking for a twist on that trope, and came up with two changes. One, the romance would not take place at the office, and two, the office wasn’t the only place people work. Hence “Workplace Encounters” and a focus on blue-collar jobs. They are fascinating to me, and there are not that many books with main characters in those professions. I have found the occasional firefighter or handyman, but there isn’t a lot of variation. So I set out to research potential jobs I could be looking at, and when I came across elevator mechanics, and steamfitters, and carpenters, and lumberjacks, I guess I got inspired.

Do you have a favourite occupation in the series, a workplace you found the most fun to be the setting of one of your stories? And do you have a favourite couple in the series so far?

Serena: Not really. I get so involved into each new profession I research that I like them all. As for a favorite couple – that is the same thing. I will always have a special place in my heart for Joe and Bill, of The Elevator Mechanic, because they were the first who popped into my head. Not to mention that Bill is deliciously kinky and opens Joe’s eyes to a whole new world of sexual play and adventures. But as I work with each new couple, I discover things about them I really like too. I mean, take the guys in The Baker. Ian with his overbearing father learns to stand up for himself – and wears a mean kilt. And Camron, the studly former Marine turned detective who is up for promotion and still finds the time to support Ian. What’s not to love?

Can you tell us a little more about Ian and Cameron? And perhaps share a little something that isn’t mentioned in the blurb?

Serena: I’ll share the first part of their New Year’s brunch with you…

Cameron had arrived early, just to be sure they’d have a table. Right before eleven a tired-looking Ian walked in, and Cameron waved him over. He got a refill for his coffee, Ian got a new mug, and they were left to their own devices with a huge menu as the frazzled waitress hurried to the next table demanding her attention.

“Hi.” Ian hardly looked up from his coffee, clasping his mug with an intensity worthy of a life raft, not a portion of caffeine.

“Happy New Year?” Cameron couldn’t help phrasing it as a question.

Ian’s body language couldn’t be clearer—Ian was not feeling even close to happy.

“Yeah.” Ian looked up, and his eyes flashed with something like anger. “Happy fucking New Year.”

Cameron’s eyes widened of their own accord. He hadn’t known Ian, who’d so far seemed so even-keeled, had it in him.

“Oh my God. I didn’t say that out loud, did I?” Ian’s eyes were as big as Cameron’s felt.

Cameron nodded, not at all sure what to say. The father of three seated at the next table, right behind Ian’s back, had turned around and thrown proverbial daggers at Ian with his eyes, but Cameron wasn’t about to tell Ian. He seemed distraught enough as it was.

“I’m sorry.” Ian deflated, almost sinking under the table as he slumped in his chair.

“No problem.” Cameron tilted his head, curious what had prompted this outburst. “But I’d like to know what caused you to swear and help if I can.”

“I’m not so sure anyone can help, but thank you.” Ian righted himself a little and poured half his coffee down his throat in one big gulp. “And I don’t want to bother you with my issues.”

“What are friends for?” Cameron was only half joking. He liked Ian, and he wanted to help if he could. He was a fixer of problems, and Ian had already wormed his way under Cameron’s skin.

“Thanks.” A small smile made Ian’s face look a lot more relaxed.

“Let’s order our food, and then we can talk while we wait.”

“Good plan.” Cameron focused back on the menu. He only needed to decide between two options. It was either the philly cheesesteak omelet or the ultimate skillet. Both were equally bad for him, but it was a holiday, and he could always work it off in the gym.

Ohh… that was great. Thank you! 🙂 On a typical day, how much time would you spend writing? Describe your writing environment.

Serena: I usually write 3-4 hours on a writing day. But then because I hate routine, I vary what I do each day. There are days where I do research, or planning, or reading to help me with the setting or the newest Workplace profession. So it isn’t always the same. I write at the desk in my upstairs study, which has a nice view between my neighbors’ houses and across the bay toward the Welsh mountains (more like high hills, actually).

What book is currently on the bedside table?

Serena: Funnily enough, I don’t read in bed. But I am reading The Backyard Lumberjack right now, as well as an anthology of gay erotica, and a few gay romance books.I read quite fast, so it’s rare one lasts more than a day.  You’ll see my reviews pop up on Goodreads as I go through them.

Just before nine things had slowed down to a manageable level, and Ian was about to take a short restroom break, leaving the store to Senga. But then the doorbell tinkled yet again, and the most gorgeous man Ian had ever laid eyes on walked into the store. He was tall, probably over six feet, had blond hair in a ruthless buzz cut, and his warm brown eyes invited Ian to trust him. The man was well built, muscular like a Marine, and wore a smart dark green suit, covered by an open black winter topcoat. His facial expression seemed guarded but curious as he looked around the store. Ian had the strangest feeling he was cataloging exits and potential sources of danger.
Thank God Senga was busy with a group of women unable to decide what they wanted so Ian had an excuse to talk to the guy.

“What can I do for you, sir?” Ian’s voice sounded suspiciously hoarse, and for the briefest moment, a spark of heat appeared in Mr. Good-looking’s eyes.

“I’ve never been to this bakery before….” The stranger trailed off as he examined Ian with the same curiosity and concentration he had used to assess the shop.

I know you haven’t. I’d definitely remember you!

“A colleague at the station recommended your stuff, so I came to have a look.” The stranger tilted his head. “You’ll probably laugh, since this is such a cliché, but I’m looking for donuts.”

“Station? Donuts?” Ian’s brain refused to function for a moment.

“Yeah, I’m a cop. Well, a detective actually, but it doesn’t seem to matter. I love donuts, and so do my colleagues.” The stranger laughed, and the deep, resonant sound thrilled Ian to his core.

“Ah. Right, well, we do sell donuts.” Ian pointed to the display. “It’s not a great selection, since most customers seem to come here for the more Scottish specialties, but I hope you can find some you like.”

“I’ll take two dozen, please.” Mr. Detective smiled. “And what else do you think I should get so my colleagues can find out about your wonderful work? It does smell amazing in here.”

“Thank you.” Ian started to put the donuts into a box and, without thinking, blurted out the first thing he could think of. “Would you like to try my buns?”

“Your… buns?” Mr. Detective’s eyebrows rose, a twinkle appeared in his eyes, and an amused smile curved his dark red lips.

“Yes. The black ones.” Ian pointed at the cakes, only to realize what the stranger must have meant when the man couldn’t stop grinning. Heaven above, was the gorgeous specimen of male beauty gay? But who else would have gotten the joke? Not that Ian had meant it as a joke. He was deep enough in the closet he didn’t know how to begin looking for the door, never mind find it. He definitely wouldn’t mind trying if this guy were on the other side, waiting for him. But Mr. Detective probably wasn’t out either, even if he were gay. A gay cop, or detective, wouldn’t make it out here in the wilds of Wyoming. Ian could feel himself blush even as he realized he was now babbling in his own head.

“Oh, I see.” Mr. Detective bent toward the black buns and grinned. “They look kinda cute. Are they as Scottish as they look with that flag painted on them?”

“Yes, they’re a traditional cake eaten during the traditional Scottish Hogmanay celebration on New Year’s Day.” Ian finished packing up the donuts, closed the box, and placed it on the counter. “Would you like to try one?”

“Yes, please. I have no idea what’s inside, but I like surprises. I’ll try to figure out what the ingredients are.” Mr. Detective looked back up. “Gives me a fun mystery to ponder.”

“Okay, I’ll get you one in a small box.” Ian wasn’t going to ask about the other mysteries, the not-so-fun ones, in the man’s life. He might be a homicide detective, and eww, Ian wasn’t going there. “Anything else I can get you?”

“Nah, I’m okay for now.” Mr. Detective grinned again. “But if your stuff tastes as good as it looks and smells, I’ll definitely be back. Can’t believe I’ve worked here for five years and have never noticed this place. Don’t tell anyone, or they’ll take my badge.”

Ian laughed as he rang up the purchase and took the guy’s money. As far as I’m concerned, you can come back anytime, Mr. Detective!

I’m a night owl and start writing when everyone else in my time zone is asleep. I’ve loved reading all my life and spent most of my childhood with my nose buried in a book. Although I always wanted to be a writer, financial independence came first. Twenty-some years and a successful business career later I took some online writing classes and never looked back.

Living and working in seven countries has taught me that there’s more than one way to get things done. It has instilled tremendous respect for the many different cultures, beliefs, attitudes and preferences that exist on our planet.

I like exploring those differences in my stories, most of which happen to be romances. My characters have a tendency to want to do their own thing, so I often have to rein them back in. The one thing we all agree on is the desire for a happy ending.

I currently live in the United Kingdom, sharing my house with a vast collection of books. I like reading, traveling, spending time with my nieces and listening to classical music. I have a passion for science and learning new languages.
