Wolf Run

The Blurb…

Mick is a lone wolf in all ways. He’s left his pack, he’s left his homelands and he’s on the road, footloose and fancy free. Well, at least until he wanders up to a fence and finds a little wolf running his ass off behind it. Mick stops to let the pup out and is stunned to hear the young wolf, Scotty, tell him “no”. Scotty’s mate and best friend, Danny, asked Scotty to stay behind the fence, so he will be safe while Danny fights to support them both. All this leaves Mick’s fur standing on end. Maybe, Mick doesn’t need one mate to bring him home. Maybe, he needs two.

An Excerpt

He dropped his wolf form as soon as he was out of sight, his body lengthening into a biped. “Dude, why are you in a cage?”

The pup yelped and scrambled back, leaping onto the porch.

“Hey, I’m not here to hurt you. I can open the gate.”

The pup looked at him then boom, a lovely lean man stood there, shaggy blond hair curling around his face. “H-hey.”

“Hi. Would you like to run? I can get you out.” God, the kid was adorable and plenty old enough to play.

“Oh. Oh, no. Daniel would be so mad at me for getting out again.” Eyes the color of brandy caught the sun. “Daniel says I’ll get hurt, lost.”

“Does Daniel mistreat you?” Because Mick could beat someone down just for fun.

“Daniel? My Daniel?” The pup’s laugh was happy, joyous, the look on his face fond and warm. “Oh, no. Daniel loves me. He works for both of us. He brings me half his food every day. He’s a good mate. We… The Alpha said ‘too many males’, and we… Daniel pays for this home, he brushes me, he works all day every day.”

“Do you work?” Mick tilted his head, waiting, nodding in sympathy. Damn, it was hard for bachelor males to manage when thrust out on their own, especially ones who needed an alpha as much as this one did. It seemed like the kid barely held it together, at least on two legs. Sweet baby.

“I paint. I paint pictures, and I wash Daniel’s uniforms. I… I get… He follows rules better than me, and he can stop a shift, if he needs to. He can even work during the moon.”

Mick smiled, liking this kid a lot. “What’s your name, honey?”

“Scott. Scott Miller. What’s yours?”

Scott. It worked.

“I’m Mick Eagleheart. I like your belly. I kinda want to lick it.”

So what did I think?

This is definitely one for lovers of sweet shifter stories. It has the added spice of a menage.

Danny is looking after Scotty after they’ve had to leave their pack. He’s doing the best he can but sacrificing himself to keep Scotty safe and give him a home. They are a very sweet couple and very much in love (although at times I found Scotty seemed quite simple and childish). In comes Mick who is looking for a pack of his own and falls for these two wolves.

This is a light story – insta-love, sweet characters, protection and rescuing with some menage sex thrown in!

So three and a half stars – one for each sexy wolf plus a half for the sweetness and the sex!

The Blurb…

After breaking up with his boyfriend Josh for the fifth time, Jeremy Woodward is in desperate need of a change. At the urging of his best friend, Jeremy decides to tag along on a trip to Nashville in the hopes of finding a job in minor league baseball. Even though Jeremy knows little about the game, the chance for a fresh start and a little distance from his old life is too hard to pass up. A short time later, Jeremy returns from Nashville with a new job, a fresh beginning, and sizzling memories of a one-night stand with a baseball player named Trevor.
While working for the Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, Jeremy gets a taste of the life he wants. But his past is never far away. His ex, Josh, has promised to wait patiently for him to come to his senses. And the sexy Trevor, the team’s star third baseman, is never far away. Even though Jeremy works in the minor leagues, he’s got a major-league decision to make. Does he keep stealing time with the guy at third? Run home to the safety of his ex? Or perhaps take a chance on something exciting and entirely new with Theo, the cute guy hiding underneath the mascot suit?…

So what did I think?

4 Inside-the-Park Home Run Stars

I went into this book knowing nothing about the story or the author. Fortunately, I was pleasantly surprised. Very much so in fact.

Jeremy is one of those guys who goes from one bad relationship to the next. He is always making the wrong decisions, leaping before he looks. The one time he tries to do the right thing, however, that’s the wrong thing too. So instead of pursuing Theo, who is obviously perfect for Jeremy, he friend zones him.

The sexual tension in this story was yummy. My frustration with Jeremy was immeasurable. I wanted to reach into my Kindle, grab him by the shoulders and shake him. Hard. And often. The hurt that Jeremy suffered each time it seemed that Theo was moving on was palpable. Towards the end though, Jeremy’s continuing failure to just tell Theo how he felt got a little old. The almost telling him then backing away happened one, maybe two, times to many for my tastes.

It should be noted that this isn’t really a sports book. Jeremy and his friend go to work for a minor league baseball team. One of Jeremy’s countless mistakes is a “relationship” with a ballplayer. You get lots of interesting tidbits about stadium operations and the like, but it’s not really a book about an athlete. Which was fine with me. The story worked, even if the cover was a bit misleading. And none of that will dissuade me from posting the picture above.

Also, there wasn’t a lot of on page sex. Of course, sex is good but the way it was written at least the romance scenes didn’t feel like they were being cut off just as things were getting hot.

by Draven St James

The Blurb…

Michael prides himself on being the man that everyone can depend on until one of his firefighters is severely wounded on the job. Will he be allowed to process the situation alone? Not when a loud and persistent Simon Winters shows up on his doorstep. The man hasn’t met a boundary he didn’t skip across.

Simon has had the biggest crush on Lieutenant Firefighter Michael Donovan since the first day he saw him. Which just happened to be at an interview for a job to work as a firefighter. Before his desire to lick the gruff older man from head to toe affects his work, Simon transfers over to being a paramedic. Just when he’s begun to build a life that doesn’t include hot shower fantasies of Michael, the object of his angst is thrust into his path.

All too quickly, Simon begins to barrel through Michael’s defenses and dig up the desires Michael has fought so hard to hide. As passions flare out of control, tragedies collide from every side. Michael’s struggle to keep Simon at a distance starts to crumble beneath the weight of the secrets that Simon is hiding. Will Michael be able to protect Simon when he needs it the most or will he lose Simon forever?

Michael stepped forward and grabbed Simon by his shoulders. “Why are you really here?” he snarled.

“Because you’ve locked yourself away?” Simon whispered and gazed at him with eyes filled with concern.

That look stabbed into Michael. “And you care why?”

“Because…” Simon shrugged, dislodging Michael’s hold, and then cupped Michael’s face with a trembling hand. “What happened wasn’t your fault, and you needed someone to come and shove that truth into your face.”

“You picked the short straw?” Michael hated that Simon’s hand on his cheek brought him more comfort than anything else had. Just like at the hospital.

Simon shook his head, and his gaze fell to Michael’s lips. His hand came down to brush against the edge of Michael’s bottom lip. A pink flush rose along Simon’s cheeks.

Michael felt that innocent touch like a jolt through his body. He tilted Simon’s face up, and the sensual invitation in his eyes shocked and inflamed him.

He didn’t have the energy to fight against what he wanted, and right now that was Simon. With a groan of defeat, he smashed his lips to Simon’s and took the sweet oblivion that Simon offered.

BLOG TOUR with GIVEAWAY and excerpt! Secret Fire by Morticia Knight

Secret Fire (Uniform Encounters 5)

by Morticia Knight

Cover Artist: Posh Gosh

Publisher: Totally Bound

The Blurb

Police officer Zach and Fire Marshal Daryl would be perfect together—if they would ever quit fighting long enough to find out. A devastating fire and the secret behind it almost keeps them from getting what they really need—each other.

Mesa police officer Zach is a fun-loving guy. Now that he’s hit the big three-oh, he’s looking to stop the hook-up train and find someone he can get serious about. When a mutual friend suggests Fire Marshal Daryl, Zach assumes he must be joking. The surly marshal has given cranky a new meaning. It’s unfortunate, though, since he is one fine-looking man.

Daryl has sworn off relationships ever since he caught his ex-partner cheating. He’s always taken everything in life seriously—from jobs to relationships—and is afraid he might be alone in that regard. Certain he can’t risk love again, he panics when he sees his secret crush Zach approaching him at a police versus firemen softball game. He’s nervous, as he is socially challenged with a tendency to blurt out the wrong things. It gets worse when he realises their shared buddy gave Zach a push. He assumes that Zach is only talking to him out of pity.

Zach has been pissed off at Daryl ever since they got into a verbal sparring match at the park. Yet, when Daryl comes to his aid during an explosive fire, Zach wonders what secrets might be hidden beneath the layers Daryl has built to protect himself from the world—and love. A night of passion turns into the possibility of something more as they struggle to find their way to one another. But all of that is threatened when there is a devastating fire that causes many people to lose their lives. As they work together to uncover the truth, someone thinks they’ve asked too many questions—and plans to stop them before they can ask any more.

An Excerpt

Daryl picked at the blanket, relieved that Zach had enjoyed it, but there was still something nagging at him.

Daryl glanced up to see Zach staring, his lips pursed.

“I know you, Daryl. What’s bothering you?”

Daryl cast his eyes down.

“Daryl, look at me. Talking, remember?”

He met Zach’s eyes again. “Yeah, we should talk about this. At one point when I put the ice on you, you yelled for me to stop. I wanted to keep going anyway because I knew what the pay-off would be.”

“You’ve had that done to you before?”

He frowned. “No, I just figured the sensations would be incredibly intense.”

“Yeah. That’s for sure.”

“But what I’m getting at is that I kept going and you had no way of stopping me since I had you tied up. I don’t want to go too far, or do anything that you hate. I think we should have an agreement as to how I would know to really stop if you wanted me to.”

He watched as an expression of understanding crossed Zach’s face.

“Oh, my God. You want me to have a safe word? No way. I thought you said you weren’t a Dom.”

Daryl scowled at him. “This has nothing to do with being a Dom or anything like that. It’s about you feeling comfortable with me so that you can relax and enjoy yourself. It’s about you knowing there’s always a way to stop me even if you can’t physically do it. I think that would enhance things between us even more.”

Zach rolled onto his side and moved in to kiss Daryl. It was soft and sensual, and Daryl thought he might be able to happily drown in it. Zach broke their connection and rubbed his nose against Daryl’s. He drew back enough so that Daryl could see the expression in his eyes.

“I…” Zach swallowed as if he had just caught himself. “You’re an amazing guy. I’m very lucky to have you in my life.”

Daryl grunted. “I’m the lucky one. However, I’m serious about this. Think about what word you would use and before I tie you up again I want to know what it is, okay?”

“Yes, Master.” Zach snickered.

“Knock it off, will ya?”

“You’re not the only one who likes to tease.”

The Blurb…

A youthful indiscretion leads to a humiliating encounter between Nicholas Danville and Lord Victor Ware. Nicholas returns home in disgrace, and Victor continues life in the Ton. Years later, Nicholas’s reproving parents send him to town to attain a degree of polish before he prepares for life as a member of the clergy. A chance encounter with an old friend leads to a new confrontation between Nicholas and Victor. This time, the attraction between them burns brighter, Nicholas is old enough to know his own mind, and Victor is done with self-denial. From ballrooms to gardens and opera houses, Victor sets about proving that a passionate liaison between two men is possible even under the narrow gaze of the Ton.

So what did I think?

Nicky (the brat) and Victor (the Lord) make a fabulous combination in this historical romance. It’s set in the Regency period (don’t tell anyone but I have no idea what this really means so I can’t comment at all on the accuracy of the book) but I liked the sense of time and place as captured by the author and how it reflected in the characters and dialogue.

Lord Ware lusts after his younger step-brother’s best friend, Nicholas. Nicholas has been walking a fine line, frolicking with his friends (it appears some frotting/wrestling among boys is acceptable) and lusting after the Lord – feelings Victor reciprocates. Nicky’s a younger son, destined for the clergy, and believes he and Victor don’t have a future. Victor has a responsibility to marry and provide heirs. And so begins their relationship as Victor chases and Nicky comes and runs, over and over.

I liked these two together and they sizzled in the bed (and the ballroom, and the gardens, and all the other places they grabbed a moment). I was interested by Nicky’s response to giving himself to the Lord “Be dammed to you, Ware! I’ll not yield to you on this! I have told you repeatedly that I will not allow this act. You choose to delude yourself into believing that I will.” Turns out that Nicky was the one who was deluded. 🙂

My only minor disappointment with this story was the ending. It wrapped up in a nice happy for now but I didn’t quite understand the actions of Victor’s cousin and wanted to find out more of what happens between Victor and Nicky. Maybe a sequel is in order?

3.5 stars

He knows full well Victor must marry to fulfill his duty to his aristocratic family.

Assuredly marriage will mean the end of their liaison.

Author Bio…

Somewhere in a small town in up-state New York are a librarian and a second grade teacher to whom I owe my life. That might be a touch dramatic, but it’s nevertheless one hundred percent true.

Because they taught me the joy of reading, of escaping into worlds crafted of words.

Have you ever been nine years old and sure of nothing so much as that you don’t belong? Looked at the world from behind glasses, and wondered why you don’t fit?

Then turn the page and see… there you are, running from Injun Joe in a dark graveyard; there you are fencing with Athos; there you are…beneath the deep blue sea- marveling at exotic creatures with Captain Nemo.

I found myself between the pages of books, and that is why I write now, it’s why I taught English and literature for so many years, and it’s why my house contains more pounds of books than furniture.

If I’d had my way, I’d have been a fencer…or a starship captain, or a lawyer, or a detective solving crimes. But instead, I am a writer, and that’s the best thing in the world to be if you ask me, because as a writer, I can be all those things and more.

If I hadn’t learned to value the stories between the pages, who knows what would have happened? Certainly not college…teaching…or writing.

Peter had evidently taken the time to pull his glossy Hessians back on because Victor had swallowed half the glass before he heard the door click behind him. Lifting the glass to study the amber liquid in the firelight, he spoke without turning around. “I pay you an adequate allowance to cover your own establishment Peter, exactly because I do not wish to find hordes of drunken revelers have invaded my home.”

“I’m glad for Peter’s sake that you’re a generous man, My Lord Ware. But I’d hardly call our little gathering a horde.”

Victor whirled about to find Danville lounging in altogether too close a proximity. A single lingering glance impressed upon Victor the slender lithe frame, lovingly outlined by tight buff colored breeches, fine white linen shirt open at the neck. Both his discreetly embroidered waistcoat and his black tailcoat hung open. Danville’s inappropriate dishabille enticed him as the devil tempted sinners. He held up a hand as though to ward off the smaller man, but Danville stepped impossibly closer, and Victor groaned as his blood thrummed and his head swam.

Strong arms wrapped around his neck, tugging his head down, and soft wet lips pressed lightly against his mouth. “I’ve waited years for this moment, Ware.”

Then Victor gave up listening, gave up fighting the response of his body as an agile tongue probed the seam of his lips, seeking entrance. He accepted Nicky’s kiss, opened his mouth to suck at the questing tongue. He chased Nicky’s tongue for what seemed like ages, his body hardening and heating with lust.

His arms closed around Nicky’s slender waist, hauling the man close so he could seek solace for the ache of his prick in grinding against the silk of Nicky’s evening breeches. The shattering of his whiskey glass on the hearth broke the mood, and Nicky pulled away, retreating to the door.

“I’m going now.” He paused, hand on the doorknob. A strangely earnest expression crossed his face as he tilted his head to glance back at the stunned Victor. “Shall I return? Or do you forbid Peter’s friends the run of your home?”

He slipped from the room while Victor struggled to frame a coherent response.

Sharp Love

The Blurb…

London, 1822

William Drake has lived among thieves, bastards and beggars all his life, doing what’s necessary to survive. As a young orphan, that included looking after his best friend, Jack Morgan. But as they grew older, Jack took the honest path, leaving Will behind to fend for himself the only ways he knows how.

When an unsavory errand for his employer brings Jack back to London’s underbelly, he needs Will’s help. It’s there, among the alleys they ran through as children, that the love he’s always felt for Will returns. As their nights together grow hotter, Will discovers something new about his old friend—Jack’s need to serve extends into the bedchamber.

Will has never fully abandoned his dream of escaping London with Jack. But what could the Duke’s driver want with a dishonest cheat like him, beyond a bit of rough sex? It takes the gamble of Will’s life to find out if he can win Jack’s heart…

So what did I think?

4+ stars.

Jack and Will met in a London workhouse when then were 6. Jack had been abandoned by his father. Will was an orphan. For the next 10 years they did everything they could to take care of each other. At 16, they went their separate ways. Now 10 years later at 26, they see each other infrequently. They have grown apart. There is bitterness on both sides for choices the other has made.

To add to the growing resentment, Jack and Will have each always loved the other but assumed the sentiment was not mutual. When things were better between them, neither would admit his feelings for fear of ruining their friendship. This encounter between the two, however, may be their last. Jack has a new life outside of London and Will plans to leave the city as well, forever separating the two. Facing the end of their time together, it seems almost pointless to admit their love only to have their hearts broken.

I loved this story. Ava March is probably my favorite historical MM writer and this is probably my favorite era for MM romances. Though perhaps not historically accurate, her MCs, although discreet in their “preference for men,” never fear persecution. The elimination of that stress from the stories allows for the relationships to develop their own angst due to the choices the MCs have made rather than from outside forces. Knowing that I am not likely going to read about some terrible imprisonment for an MC’s homosexuality, I am better able to relax into the story.

Sharp Love takes place at the same time as the events in All in with the Duke. The tie ins are done with precision without ever feeling forced. Getting to see Max and Tristan again from another perspective was a treat. But I also think that Sharp Love could be read as a stand alone. I don’t say that often with books in a series, but here Jack and Will’s story stood well on its own and not knowing the full details of Max and Tristan’s relationship probably wouldn’t affect a reader’s enjoyment of Sharp Love.
