★★★★ Chasing the Rebel by Tyler Flynn ★★★★

High highly entertaining and recommended historical romance!

Chasing the Rebel

Chasing the Rebel

by Tyler Flynn

The blurb…

France, 1791

Marcus, Lord Rothbury, is on the run. Part of a foiled plot to help King Louis and Queen Marie Antoinette escape to Switzerland, he’s searching for the jewels the rebels stole from the queen—jewels that, when sold in England, will buy the monarchs’ freedom and restore the aristocratic order Marcus holds dear.

Pamphleteer James Lockhart publicly condemns the monarchy and has his own plans for the jewels—selling them to help the Parisian poor. But when the two are thrown together against a common adversary, Marcus finds himself increasingly attracted to the impetuous American.

As they hunt for the jewels, Marcus begins to suspect his companion isn’t all he seems. Secretive and changeable, James could be playing a double game, and Marcus can’t be sure who James is fighting against—the enemy, or the man who’s fallen in love with him.

So what did I think?

Marcus, Lord Rothbury is a British aristocrat living at the French court of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette.  After the king and queen are captured by the revolutionary mob and the crown jewels are stolen, Rothbury sets off across the country.  He plans to retrieve the jewels, go back to England and use them to ransom the royal family.  His journey is complicated when he has to rescue James Lockhart, a young American revolutionary who wants the jewels to feed the poor.  Rothbury is a serious and single-minded royalist, and Lockhart is his opposite, careless, cheerful and a man of the people.  The two men have nothing in common except the jewels, and, coincidentally, a passionate night they spent together in a Paris garret before history turned ugly.

Rothbury has no choice but to join forces with Lockhart and they set off, pursued by revolutionary soldiers who mistakenly think that Rothbury has the jewels.  Together, the pair escape ambush, fire and flood but Rothbury can’t escape from his own thoughts.  He is haunted by erotic memories of his night with Lockhart and by an aching attraction for his companion.  It doesn’t help that the ever cheerful Lockhart is very open about his own desire, and very scornful of the aristocrat’s plans to ransom the royals.  As they get closer to the jewels, Rothbury is torn between his yearning and affection for the charming Lockhart, and by his growing suspicion that the young revolutionary is a spy.

What an exciting French Revolutionary ride!  The momentum starts in the first paragraph and doesn’t let up until the end.  It’s a fairly simple plot, but the author is a good writer so the story keeps moving and the settings are so vivid that you can see 18th century France in your head.  The opposite nature of the two characters is deftly written.  Rothbury is fairly humorless at the beginning, but Lockhart keeps stumbling into trouble and talking and talking and being cheerful and he has no choice but to warm up.  There are some very funny parts where Lockhart blunders into danger and Rothbury throws up his hands in exasperation before he rides to the rescue.  There is also a lot of sexual tension.  The author peppers the story with Rothbury’s erotic memories of his night with Lockhart and it winds things so tightly that when the two of them finally fall into each other’s arms you are practically cheering.

This was a great read.  The love story was satisfying and the relationship between the two characters was very entertaining.  Highly recommended.

★★★★★ Private Dicks (Private Dicks #1) by Katie Allen ★★★★★

It’s Throwback Thursday so you might want to check out this ripper!

Private Dicks

Private Dicks

by

Katie Allen

First published April 2009 by Ellora’s Cave

The blurb:

Ex-cop Isaac Rhodes is a tough and intimidating private investigator with a talent for kicking in doors and knocking bail jumpers’ heads together. His only soft spot is for his partner, Nate Washington—though Wash makes him anything but soft. He’s silently lusted after Wash for a year, until his desire drives him to finally come out to his partner.

This confession leads to Wash admitting a few secrets of his own, unleashing needs that result in hot, sweaty, sexy, man-on-man intimacy. Rhodes is elated…until Wash admits he’s unsure if he’s willing to endure the often prejudice-filled life of an outed gay man. Crushed, Rhodes backs off. But one missing child—and a gun to Wash’s head—convinces Rhodes to do whatever it takes to get his man.

So what did Robyn think?

Given the title and cover you’d be mistaken thinking this was a PWP (porn without plot)  It’s not. It’s freaking perfect!!!

Think about this:

  • Two hot MC’s? Check
  • A crimey type plot? Check
  • Enough sex to cover the storyline without going overboard? Check
  • Just a hint of angsty romance? Check
  • Humour to boot? Check and double check.

Fantastic!! I loved both MC’s immensely, especially Wash coz he was unapologetic with everyone. I didn’t like what he did to Isaac initially but he made up for it in the end. Poor Isaac was a bit here and there with Wash but I understood him not wanting to appear desperate and needy. The crimey plot was well done too. Not over the top action, just enough realism for this to be a fantastic light read.

Recommended to all.

Hope you enjoy – Robyn x

★★★★ Stay by Riley Hart ★★★★

Robyn reviews the second book in Riley Hart’s Blackcreek Series

  • Collide (Blackcreek #1)
  • Stay (Blackcreek #2) –  in this review

Stay

Stay

by

Riley Hart

The blurb…

Wes Jensen just lost the sister who raised him, and gained custody of his niece. The last thing he needs to add to his full plate is dealing with Braden Roth, the one-night-stand who continues to try to push his way into Wes’ life. He has a kid to raise now, and Wes isn’t great at getting close anyway.

Braden has never had a woman or a man sneak out on him the morning after. From the start, Wes intrigues him, and Braden isn’t one to deny himself something he wants. And he wants Wes. The more time he spends with Wes and the little girl who constantly keeps them on their toes, the more Braden realizes this isn’t just about getting the guy who walked away.

As their lives intertwine more and more, Wes discovers Braden isn’t as shallow as he thought. But after everything Wes lost in his life, he isn’t sure he can risk his heart, and truly want Braden to stay—and if he did, would Wes’ quiet life be enough for Braden?

So what did Robyn think?

I enjoyed this as much as the first one. Collide was about Cooper and Noah and is a great friends-to-lovers, gfy read, where Stay involves Braden, who’s bi and Wes, who’s gay.

Braden is the guy who doesn’t have a filter and constantly talks, always putting his foot in his mouth. He’s a player and sleeps with anyone that takes his fancy. He’s never stayed in one place for long as he likes the adventure of new places. He’s likeable enough but some things he says, at the most inopportune time can make you cringe.  Wes on the other hand, doesn’t talk much. Doesn’t let anyone in for the fear that if he loves them they’ll leave. His father left, his mother died and just recently his older sister died and left him custody of his 4 year old niece.  The guys heart is huge, but he thinks he doesn’t have any time for a relationship. So what’s he gonna do when he has a one night stand with Braden and Braden wants to do it again.

They get under each other’s skin, thats what.  This was a great read and I loved the emotion that Riley portrays. Braden was a bit of an asshat in the beginning but I ended up loving him anyway. These guys tried not to fall in love, they really did try quite hard, but they were never going to win. I loved the interaction between Braden and Jessie and Braden family were fantastic.  Loved it all.

Really looking forward to Mason’s story in book #3.

Hope you enjoy – Robyn x

GIVEAWAY, Excerpt and Review: The Dirty Martini by Renee George

 MartiniBanner3   TheDirtyMartini_Cocktails4_medium

The Dirty Martini (CockTail #4)

Cover Artist: Renee George

Publisher: Renee George

The Blurb…

When bartender Chris Lawson goes into shock after getting the worst news of his life, he wakes up in the arms of Marty Lincoln, an Army Ranger on leave from his post. Even in his grief, Chris feels instantly connected to the war-ravaged vet. Only two problems: Marty is his boss’s younger brother. And even if that wasn’t an obstacle, the battle-hardened Ranger is straight. Or is he? ***This takes place in the CockTail serials world, but is a stand alone novella.

An Excerpt

Driving up the highway, only a couple hours from his hometown, Chris allowed the surrealness of the situation to envelope him. Marty hadn’t said more than a few perfunctory words to him since they’d stopped at Chris’s apartment to pick up his things for the two-day trip, and he’d made a point of not making eye contact with Chris. The silence and distance lingered between them—a thick and heavy barrier. Did Marty already regret his decision to take Chris home? They barely knew each other. They weren’t friends, and one night didn’t make them lovers.

Chris pursed his lips, steeling his courage to give Marty an out. “About last night. It doesn’t have to mean anything. Just two people hanging out, hooking up. It’s not a big deal.” He snapped his mouth shut and swallowed hard. God, he sounded like a rambling imbecile. Marty’s white knuckles and seriously drawn brows indicated Chris was making things worse not better. “Look. One time doesn’t mean your gay or anything. I was sad. You were sad… or whatever. We helped each other. End of story. No reason to feel bad or guilty. It’s not like I’m going to be heartbroken if you don’t want me.”

Hearing his own words, the possible truth of them, hit Chris like a punch to the gut. “I hope that’s not why you’re taking me to my dad’s funeral. Because you feel guilty about what we did.”

The car slowed. Marty flipped the right blinker. He pulled them over to the side of the highway, put the car in park, and turned his head until his gaze fell on Chris.

Chris, who had some experience with the fight or flight reflex, was suddenly in flight mode. He should’ve kept his mouth shut! Marty looked like he was ready to beat the crap out him, and considering his ranger training, Chris had little chance against him.

When Marty undid his seatbelt and turned his body to face the passenger seat, Chris pressed his back against the door. Marty leaned over the console between them until his face hovered inches from Chris’s. Chris tucked his chin and closed his eyes, bracing for the punch.

His eyes fluttered open when he felt the unexpected warm press of Marty’s lips against his own. Not the punch he was expecting, but just as hard of a knockout. Marty’s eyes had softened at the edges, but he still looked angry when he pulled back.

“I’ve wanted to do that since I walked in on you having coffee with Jay this morning. Not kissing you before now has been the hardest part of my day.”

Stunned, Chris said nothing when Marty sat back in his seat, put his seatbelt on, and started the car. “Have I cleared up your confusion?”

Chris shook his head and smiled. “Not at all.”

So What Did I think?

This is the fourth book in a series but the blurb advised can be read standalone– which I did. The story brings together Marty, an injured military man who is tormented with memories, and Chris, who suffers his own loss. Combine this with a coming-out(at least to Chris) story line and some hot first-time sex, and it was a great story.

really enjoyed the story. The highlights were the characters themselves, the super hot sex scenes and natural dialogue. There was a real sense of believe-ability to the story. I loved the author’s style but had a small regret.

The length – I loved the characters and wanted MORE. We only get to spend a little bit of time with Marty and Chris and I wanted a full-blown novel. It’s a short story and ends just as the guys are getting together. I wanted to see their next steps, how Marty would talk to his family, anything really. That being said, I was very impressed with the depth to the characters considering the shortness of the book.

There are some little glimpses of the characters from the previous books in the series. So tempting, that I now have to read them too. You definitely don’t need any prior knowledge of these characters but I am intrigued to hear their stories.

So in summary, I felt this was a really well written, although short story. Fabulous for a quick read!

Stranger On The Shore by Josh Lanyon

We welcome our new reviewer Barbara who gave 4 stars to Stranger On The Shore!

And don’t forget to check out the book trailer!

Stranger on the Shore

Stranger On The Shore

By Josh Lanyon

The blurb..

Twenty years ago young Brian Arlington, heir to Arlington fortune, was kidnapped. Though the ransom was paid, the boy was never seen again and is presumed dead. Pierce Mather, the family lawyer, now administers and controls the Arlington billions. He’s none too happy, and more than a little suspicious, when investigative journalist Griffin Hadley shows up to write about the decades-old mystery. Griff shrugs off the coldly handsome Pierce’s objections, but it might not be so easy to shrug off the objections of someone willing to do anything to keep the past buried.

So what did I think?

Journalist Griff Hadley has always been fascinated by the lives of the rich, so when he is invited to write a book about the unsolved kidnapping of four-year old Brian Arlington, he jumps at the chance. The Arlingtons are extremely wealthy and Brian was taken 20 years before in the middle of a costume party at the family’s lavish estate.  One of the family servants was jailed for the crime, but Brian was never found.

When Griff arrives at the estate he finds himself unwelcome in the extreme.  Only the family patriarch Jarrett is kind. The rest of the family and servants are hostile, fearful that Griff’s research will turn up too many family skeletons.  Worst of all is Pierce Mather, the family lawyer.  Pierce is handsome, well-groomed, and an imperious jerk who tries to buy Griff off on the very first evening.

Griff is undeterred by the general hostility and throws himself into the research, uncovering many details that the police never knew.  He also uncovers a softer, although confusing side of Pierce during an awkward one-night stand.  Just as Griff is making progress putting together the pieces of the kidnapping and the pieces of Pierce’s story, a stranger appears who claims to be the long-lost Brian.  It seems as though the Arlingtons are due for a happy ending but something still isn’t quite right.  It’s up to Griff and Pierce to find out the truth.

This is a great mystery and a very satisfying romance.  There are lots of twists including one big whopping one at the end, and it was the kind of plot that I like where the reader can’t solve the mystery until the characters do.  The characters and setting were very well done, and even though murder in the mansion is a common plot device, it was handled with originality. The author was very smart- he carefully referenced the Lindbergh baby kidnapping and The Great Gatsby both of which added a lot of atmosphere.

I liked the romance a lot.  Pierce is that kind of Mr. Darcy type who you hate at the beginning and like more and more as the story goes on.  He and Griff are both complicated characters who don’t fall in love easily, and that added the satisfying level of erotic tension to the story.

I recommend this book highly!  Good plot, good characters.  What more can you ask for!

The Blurb…

Young and idealistic, Jon and Dave meet by chance, their friendship growing stronger and leading them to a place neither has been before. Though theirs is a love forbidden, which few understand, they journey across the country together and settle in San Francisco, where they are finally free to be together as they were meant to be. When life takes an unexpected turn, however, the two young lovers are torn apart by a secret which, if unveiled, threatens to bring great shame to the family of one determined to keep them on the straight and narrow.

An Excerpt…

“Do you ever think about doing it again?” he asked me tentatively.

“Kissing you?”

“Yea.”

“All the time now,” I replied. I couldn’t lie to him, I did.

“Really?”

“Yea, what about you?” I asked.

“I do, I think about it all the time too.”

“So, why haven’t we, if we both want too?” He asked me

“I dunno, because we are afraid?”

“Yea, I know. But what are we afraid of?”

“I guess where it might end up.”

“Where it might end?”

“Yea”

“Dave,” he said, “Where are we going to end up? I need to know.”

“Fucked if I know.”

“We’ve been together all summer, and we’ve been through a lot.”

“It’s been perfect.”

“I’ve got to know,” he said, drawing closer to me.

“What?” I asked.

“Do you REALLY love me?”

I didn’t have to think about it.

“Jon, I love you more than anyone else. More than I ever thought that I could love someone.”

“And I love you too Dave. I can’t imagine ever being without you again.”

“I’d do anything for you.”

“I know, and I’d do anything with you.”

He laid there, next to me, staring into my eyes, as I fell hopelessly into his, both of us finally, realizing.

“Hey,” he said, as he ran his fingers through my hair, and he gently drew me closer, “I have to tell you something…”

“What?” I said, putting my arm around him, caressing him, and reassuring him.

“I’m not afraid anymore,” he whispered into my ear.

“You know,” I replied, softly, our lips barely separated, “neither am I. Not anymore.”

“So, it doesn’t matter?”

“No, it doesn’t matter.”

“Well, watcha waiting for?”

I wanted to kiss him again for a long time now. And finally I could, and the fear, and the worrying, were gone. I had too, I couldn’t not kiss him any longer.

We drew closer, slowly. It was awkward and we laughed a little. Finally, I pressed my lips against his; the spark was instantaneous. I could feel the pent up passion rising from deep within. It was unstoppable, and soon we were tight in each other’s arms, kissing passionately.

I looked deeply into his eyes, our lips barely separated, and I whispered to him gently, tenderly, “I love you”

Pulling me closer, and tighter, he caressed my face.

He replied, in between tender kisses, “I love you more.”

“Are you sure you want to do this?” I asked him.

“I can’t imagine not doing this,” he replied.

“Yea, I know exactly what you mean.”

Our lives, and everything that we had been through and done together, the thoughts that we shared and the emotions that we expressed, were a mere dress rehearsal, leading to this moment. The paths that we had chosen, and the decisions that we had made together, led us into each other’s arms and souls.

A Dance with Domination

by K.C. Wells

Cover Artist: Paul Richmond

Publisher: Dreamspinner Press

The Blurb…

DancewithDomination[A]LG

Recently returned to the UK after living in the States since he was eleven, Andrew Barrett is determined to keep busy and make a new life for himself. He works full time as a copywriter and strips at a club on Canal Street on weekends. But it still leaves him too much time to think. Then he finds the BDSM club, Collars & Cuffs, where at twenty-nine, he is their youngest Dom. Young doesn’t mean inexperienced, however. All this activity keeps him focused with no time to dwell on the past. But the past has a way of intruding on the present.

It’s been four long years since Gareth Michaels last set foot inside Collars & Cuffs. But when he finally summons his courage and steps back into his former world, he finds the man who drove him away is still a member, and what’s more, he wants Gareth back. Two men in pain need the freedom they find in each other, but it takes another man’s horrific plans to make them see it.

An excerpt…

Gareth has just gone back to Collars & Cuffs for the first time in four years.
GARETH’S HEART quaked as he watched Craig approach. The Dom had changed very little in the intervening four years, except that maybe there was a sprinkling of more gray hair at his temples. His black shirt stretched tight across his wide frame, and at five feet eleven, arms thick with muscle, eyes the color of stone, Craig was still an imposing figure.
Gareth held himself very still as Craig came to a halt in front of him. Those eyes perused him, no warmth in them.
“You’re back. It’s been a while.” The words were delivered in a flat tone. Gareth thought bitterly that no one hearing them would ever guess at the relationship that had once existed between them. Well, I thought you were a cold-hearted bastard four years ago, and you haven’t improved with age.
“Yes, Sir,” Gareth said quietly. He kept his back straight, unwilling to give Craig the satisfaction of seeing him shiver. Just looking at Craig brought back so many memories, and not all of them pleasant.
To his surprise, he felt Leo slip an arm around his shoulders and squeeze lightly. “Yes, it’s really good to have Gareth back with us, isn’t it?” Gareth leaned into him, grateful for Leo’s strong presence. To his left, Pietro stepped closer, so that the two men flanked him. Gareth suddenly realized what they were doing. Warmth flooded through him at the thought of the Dom and the sub who were closing ranks, supporting him, and he felt the tension in his body ease.
The unmasked look of surprise on Craig’s face was unexpected, as was his reaction. He backed away with a curt nod to Leo and one last intent look at Gareth. Leo’s arm was still tight around him, and Pietro’s hand encircled his. Gareth inhaled deeply.
“Are you all right?” Leo asked, his voice low.
Gareth nodded. “Yes, thank you, Sir.” He gave Leo a weak smile. Leo released him with a nod. A burst of applause broke through, startling him, and he looked toward the stage. The demonstration had evidently finished. The crowd around the stage parted as the level of noise grew, and Gareth saw Andrew walking toward Leo. Gareth knew the second Andrew caught sight of him. The Dom froze. Their eyes locked.
Gareth couldn’t breathe. Andrew’s eyes grew wide, his lips parting.
“I meant to ask, why come back now?”
It took a moment or two for Gareth to realize that the words were directed at him. He turned to Leo, who was regarding him quizzically. Leo looked toward Andrew and then back to Gareth. A slow smile crossed his face. “Oh, I see.”
Gareth’s cheeks grew hot. By the time Andrew reached the little group, they were almost on fire. He lowered his gaze, unwilling to look Andrew in the eye. Gareth had seen Andrew naked on stage countless times, but somehow, seeing him in this setting, those tight leather pants, his chest bare, was much more stimulating.
Come on, let’s be honest here. Andrew the Dom is hot.
“Andrew, that was wonderful,” Leo congratulated him. “We’ll have to have you do another demonstration another day.”
“That would be fine,” Andrew replied. Gareth could feel the Dom’s eyes on him.
“Andrew, I believe you already know Gareth, one of our members who’s been away for a while.”
Gareth’s cheeks were scorching hot. He took a peek at Andrew’s face, to find him smirking.
“Yes, we work together.” Andrew deliberately looked him up and down. “You’re looking very well this evening, Gareth.” The smirk widened. “It’s nice to see what you look like with clothes on. It’s not often that I get the chance.” Those dark, dark eyes danced with amusement.
Gareth couldn’t miss Leo’s snort. He was sure his whole face was red-hot by now.
“You’ll have to excuse me,” Leo said, “but I need to go and speak to Thomas about something.” He gave Andrew a brief nod and then gazed at Gareth with a fond expression. “It is so good to have you back.”
Gareth flushed. He turned to find Alex and Pietro talking animatedly with Andrew about the demonstration he’d given. Gareth watched his friend with amusement. Pietro hadn’t changed, thank God. Gareth smiled to himself when he caught Miles looking at the sub with an identical expression on his face.
“Leave the poor man alone,” Miles said to Pietro with a grin. “He’s just performed brilliantly, and here you are, bending his ear. Besides, I need you. You can come help me tidy up the group room.” Miles caught hold of Pietro’s hand and held it. Pietro looked up at him, eyes glowing. Miles speared Alex with a look. “You too, pup. That’ll keep you out of mischief ’til Leo comes back.”
Alex gasped in mock horror. “As if I’d misbehave, Sir. The mere thought hadn’t even considered the possibility of crossing my mind.” He smiled at Gareth. “It was good to meet you.”
“Same here,” Gareth said warmly. He’d taken a liking to the tall young man with the wicked chuckle.
Alex grinned and then followed Miles and his boy toward the group room.
It was then Gareth realized he was standing alone with Andrew, who was regarding him steadily. And suddenly he couldn’t keep still. It was as if his limbs took on a life of their own.
Andrew clicked his fingers. “Focus, boy.” He spoke quietly, but the tone in which he delivered the instruction made it clear he expected Gareth to comply. And Gareth found himself doing exactly that without thinking. He saw how Andrew waited, eyes focused on him.
What the hell do I call him?
“Yes, Sir.” Gareth focused on feelings of calm, letting his body relax, until he stood still, hands by his sides. It wasn’t easy. Seeing Andrew as a Dom, rather than his fellow dancer, set off a fluttering in his stomach. He felt hot. The look of approval in Andrew’s eyes, however, made him swell with pride.
“I think we need a drink.”
Gareth realized he’d left his pint at the bar. “I already have a beer.”
Andrew smiled. “In which case, I definitely need one.” He led the way to the bar area and pointed to a quiet corner with one empty table. Gareth sat, his back to the corner.
Ben appeared at their table a moment or two later, carrying Gareth’s beer. “I believe this is yours,” he said with a grin as he placed it in front of Gareth. He turned to Andrew. “What would you like to drink, Andrew?”
“A Manhattan for me, thanks, Ben.”
“I’ll bring it right over.” Ben walked off to the bar. Before long, Andrew’s drink appeared on their table, and Gareth took a long sip of his beer, trying to cool his warm face. He looked out across the club—and froze when he caught sight of Craig. The Dom was deep in conversation with two other men.
Gareth dropped his chin to his chest. Cold spread throughout his body, and he tensed. You can’t let him get to you like this.
“You need to tell me what’s going on between you and that Dom.”
Gareth jerked his head up.
Andrew flushed. “That was rude. Forgive me. I had no right to speak to you like that. But it’s clear there’s something wrong.”
Gareth stared at him, unable to speak for a moment. Andrew said nothing, but waited, a patient air about him. It was clear he wasn’t about to give up until he got what he wanted.
Gareth looked back to where Craig stood. “Master Craig,” he began and then stopped to draw in another deep breath before continuing. He met Andrew’s gaze. “He was my first master when I was eighteen.”
Andrew’s expression softened. “Go on,” he urged.
Gareth swallowed. “When I was twenty-one, I left him.” God, it still hurts. How can it still hurt me after all this time?
“Was that a mutual decision?”
If he’d thought it hurt before…. “No, not exactly.” The words were barely a whisper. Gareth couldn’t continue. His throat seized up.
Andrew narrowed his gaze. “I think there’s a lot more to this story, but now’s not the time. And to be honest, after that demo, I’m exhausted.”
Gareth gave him a keen glance. Now that he said it, the fatigue was evident. “Then maybe you should rest… Sir.” There was that feeling of confusion again. He expelled his breath. “Look, this feels weird. You’re my mate, and yet right now, I haven’t got a clue how to address you, how to act around you.”
Andrew regarded him steadily. “It’s okay, Gareth,” he said quietly. “We’ve just added another dimension to our friendship, that’s all. I know it’s confusing.” Gareth nodded. “I think we should get together and talk some more. We just need to figure this out.”
Gareth’s heart sank. As long as I don’t have to talk about him.
Something must have registered on his face, because Andrew smiled gently. “How about a bite to eat before Bliss on Friday?” He studied Gareth intently. “I won’t bite, Gareth.” That smirk was back.
It was clear Andrew wouldn’t be letting go of this anytime soon. There was nothing for it but to go along with him.
“Yeah, okay,” he said resignedly. Andrew’s pleased expression brought a brief swell of contentment.
“Good boy.”
Gareth felt a pang as the words registered. Okay, Andrew was a mate. But right now, those words sounded so good. It had been a long time since someone had said that to him, and if he were completely truthful, he’d missed it. Nothing had filled the void left behind when he’d stopped coming to the club. But in the first few weeks after Craig had…. Yeah, there’d been no wayGareth could have walked in here, not with the very real possibility of running into him.
Andrew finished his Manhattan and then smiled at Gareth. “Then we’ll call it a night. I look forward to seeing you on Friday. I’ll give you a call when I’ve worked out where we’re going to meet up.” He got to his feet, and Gareth joined him. Andrew gazed at him for a moment in silence, until Gareth itched to know what was going through his mind. Andrew’s smile widened. “It’s really good to see you here, Gareth.”
The sincerity of his words was unmistakable, and Gareth responded wholeheartedly.
“Yeah, same here.”
As he watched Andrew walk away from the table, it occurred to him that his relationship with Andrew at work might have just changed. To what extent, he’d have to wait and see. He hoped this dinner on Friday would make it really clear where the lines were drawn. Because right now, he didn’t have a clue.

What did I think?

This book is slightly different from the other books in the series. Where it differs is that it’s not primarily a BDSM story in the true sense of a dominant/submissive relationship and does not feature a heavy D/s relationship between the main characters.  Instead this is the story of a relationship building between two men who work as strippers at a club. Andrew is a Dom and Gareth is submissive but this isn’t the crux of their relationship. There are some D/s scenes but they are primarily not between the main characters of Andrew and Gareth.

The plot follows Andrews integration back into life in Manchester after many years of living in the US. He works as a stripper to supplement his income and allow him to afford membership to Collars & Cuffs. In the early part of the book, we see Andrew’s early exploration into the scene at the club (Collars & Cuffs) plus meet the guys who work as strippers at Bliss. It’s not until the mid-point of story that Gareth works his magic with a sexy pole dance, that they finally get together.

Throw in some time spent with characters from the previous books plus a dash of drama as the bad guy comes out to play (there’s a clue in the excerpt!), and it’s a nice continuation of the series!

COVER REVEAL: The Blinding Light by Renae Kaye

Today we are joined by the wonderful Renae Kaye (author of Loving Jay) who is excited to share with us the details of her new upcoming novel: The Blinding Light.

TheBlindingLight Final Cover

Release date: 14th July 2014
from Dreamspinner Press

The Blurb…

Jake Manning’s smart mouth frequently gets him into trouble. Because of it, he can’t hold a job. Combined with some bad luck, it’s prevented him from keeping steady employment. A huge debt looms over him, and alone he shoulders the care of his alcoholic mother and three younger sisters. When a housekeeping position opens, Jake’s so desperate he leaps at the opportunity. On landing, he finds his new boss, Patrick Stanford, a fussy, arrogant, rude… and blind man.
Born without sight, Patrick is used to being accommodated, but he’s met his match with Jake, who doesn’t take any of his crap and threatens to swap all the braille labels on his groceries and run off with his guide dog unless he behaves.
Jake gets a kick out of Patrick. Things are looking up: the girls are starting their own lives and his mum’s sobriety might stick this time. He’s sacrificed everything for his family; maybe it’s time for him to live his life and start a relationship with Patrick. When his mother needs him, guilt makes his choice between family and Patrick difficult, and Jake must realize he’s not alone anymore.

So, are you excited too?

It’s taken a long time to get Jake and Patrick’s story to you. It seems ages ago that I sat down in front of a blank page and began piecing together their lives. Jake is such a sunny (although snarky) character – nothing gets him down. He’s been cleaning up after his mother and raising his sisters his entire life. A housekeeping job should be a cinch – right?
Patrick is a man hiding behind his blindness – until he meets a man who doesn’t give a shit that he’s blind and tells him to lift his game. There are so many places in this story that my jaw dropped and I told Jake that he can’t say things like that! You can’t threaten to force feed a man just because he doesn’t want to eat! You can’t go around hiding a blind man’s sex toys from him! And it’s really rude to call your employer “Patti-cake.”
(They didn’t listen to me. My characters never listen to me. Rather like my children).
I’d like to say thanks to Bree Archer for giving me such a great cover, and of course all the people at Dreamspinner Press.
Now I just have to wait for the release… 31 days and counting…

Between Love and Honor + The Courage to Love

This review is of two books which follow the story of David Harrison. The first, Between Love and Honor, is a short story and is part of the Dreamspinner Press Bittersweet Dreams series.

Bittersweet Dreams, stories of M/M romance with nontraditional endings. It’s an unfortunate truth: love doesn’t always conquer all. Regardless of its strength, sometimes fate intervenes, tragedy strikes, or forces conspire against it. These stories of romance do not offer a traditional happy ending, but the strong and enduring love will still touch your heart and maybe move you to tears.

The second story, The Courage to Love, picks up David’s tale as he meets Bernard and needs to overcome his fear if they are to find happiness together.

The Blurb...

It’s 1914 and David looks up from his Post Office counter to see the man of his dreams. Carl is everything he’s ever wanted, but Australia has laws against ‘deviants’ and the two men must be circumspect. When World War I breaks out, Carl tries to enlist but is rejected. People see his delicate features and stature and assume he’s ‘less than a man’. He’s scorned for not doing his duty while David is applauded for serving his country at home. Public condemnation turns violent, and Carl and David are torn between love and honor.

So what did I think?

This story had a true sense of time and place, capturing the era and the attitudes beautifully . The time is 1914 and David & Carl are dealing with their growing love for one another in a time when their love was definitely not understood, and also dealing with the impact of the war.

I knew this story was bittersweet going into it and almost read it reluctantly, knowing I was setting myself up for heartache. It is only a short story but managed to really draw me in, leaving me with a feeling of sadness and most definitely wanting to keep following David’s story.

Somehow I think it makes it easier to read these Bittersweet series stories when you know there is another book on the horizon. In this case it is The Courage To Love which follows David’s story as he returns from the war.

The blurb…

Warning: This blurb is slightly spoilerish if you haven’t read the first book yet so skip to the review section if you don’t want to find out what happened!

In 1915, after his beloved Carl died from a vicious beating, David Harrison enlisted in the Army and went to war. He returns home to find a world seemingly unchanged, while he will never be the same. At Mrs. Gill’s boarding house, he meets Bernard Donnelly, a young man suffering the aftereffects of his own war experiences. David finds himself increasingly attracted to Bernard, but that terrifies him. He blames himself for Carl’s horrific death and fears he isn’t strong enough to lose another love to violence.

Bernard needs David to help him face each day and find a way they can be together without stigma—and without putting them in legal and physical danger—but David clings to his idea that the only way to keep a lover safe is not to have one. His fears threaten to destroy everything, unless he learns that sometimes the risk is worth it and finds the courage to love.

So what did I think?

David’s story started in Between Love and Honor, where David met and fell in love with Carl but they were not destined to have a future together. David is devastated at the loss of his lover and holds himself responsible. The Courage To Love picks up his story once he returns from the horrors of the war.

As with the first story, this book had a wonderful sense of time and place and appeared to reflect what it was like to live in Brisbane in the period after the war– the attitudes, the way of life, the hardship, the illness…

This is a story of fear of loving. And David’s fear is understandable due to what he’d been through– the death of his lover, his guilt, the war experience, his own mother’s attitude. The result is that his love for Bernard meant he kept him at arm’s length, afraid to get too close.

It was a moving story with wonderful characters– I loved Mrs Gill– but I do admit to wanting just a touch more of a physical relationship between David and Bernard. I know that their level and amount of intimacy was appropriate for the story but I couldn’t help but hope.

And after the tears of book 1, thank goodness David got his happy ending!
