Battered & Bruised, but not broken, is an erotic, male/male, gay romance novel. It’s the culmination of two lost souls finding what they didn’t know they were looking for.

Hunter’s an ex-con, always in the wrong place at the wrong times, which is how he landed up in prison. He’s looking to start anew, when in walks Elliott.

Timid , sheltered, Elliott, has his life in order. Or so he thinks. That is until, Hunter, introduces him to a whole new world.

Both are battling demons from the past, but what happens when their two worlds collide?

Where in the hell did I get that prissy, little take charge, bitch attitude from? That’s so not like me, I’m actually quite the opposite. Yet every time I’m around Hunter I turn into a fucking queen. But the way he freaked when I told him I was a virgin sent me into fight or flight mode and I’ll be damned if I’m going to let him or his ‘my shit don’t stink’ attitude get the best of me. Tell me I can come and go as I please, it’s like ‘no fucking shit I can’, but right now, all I want to do is lose my virginity to this cocky man. Why him? I honestly don’t know, but twenty-three years of waiting can make a guy do crazy shit.

I know he wants me, it’s written all over his smug face. I see him grin when he thinks I’m looking the other direction. There’s a reason our paths keep crossing, call it karma, call it kismet, hell, call it whatever the fuck you want, but I know damn good and well there’s a reason for it. But last night, I saw a glimpse of his gentle side— the side that calls me to him when I shivered while he was undressing me.

As I lay here watching him sleep, I see so much more in him than he does. I see the gentler, need to be loved side that he desperately tries to hide behind his tattooed bad boy façade. But what makes him tick? Baggage he claims, fuck dude, we all have baggage. Try getting past a homophobic father who damn near beats you to death when he finds out you’re gay. Talk about baggage, I never let anyone in after that. Fuck, it’d been years before I even tried to so much as kiss anyone after that. Hook-ups were my chosen vice in college, but I never let anyone in. And lo and behold what happens the first time I do? I get my dick sucked by the most amazing man I’ve ever met. The same man laying here beside me sleeping. The same man who’s quickly winning my heart.

I was so nervous last night when he undressed me, so afraid he’d reject me in my vulnerable state of nakedness. My body still bears the physical scars from my father’s abuse which I thought would turn him off. But he looked right past them as though they didn’t exist. And when he called me baby, I lost it. A term of endearment from a self-proclaimed bad boy. That alone shows the depths of his humanity. I know the real Hunter’s in there, now all I need to do is prove to him that I won’t hurt him because clearly, something in his past has seriously fucked him up.

BLOG TOUR & GUEST POST ~ Sam’s Story by Dylan Joseph

frontcoverss

Book Blurb:

When Dylan agreed to take a trip with his mom to a South Carolina campground, he wasn’t expecting much—until he met Sam, the lifeguard at the indoor pool. From that moment on, Dylan and Sam are thrust into a roller coaster of self-discovery. For them, even life’s most ordinary moments—brushing one’s teeth, playing a game of basketball, watching the sky—become precious. Sam’s Story is a poetic and heart melting read.

Guest Post:

Hello readers! My name is Dylan Joseph and I am a 26-year-old gay author. I just published my first book: “Sam’s Story.” The book shows the struggle of growing up gay but it is much more than that. Aren’t you tired of hearing the sad stories about being gay? Sam’s Story is the possibility of love for the gay community. The kind of love the helps you better understand yourself. The kind of love that is not based around sex. The kind of love that we all want in our 20s.

My Coming Out:  It was the spring of 2006 and one of my close friends Lark asked me to go to the high school senior prom. I immediately said “Yes!” It wasn’t until later that day I realized she wanted to go to prom with me. I am gay. It was at this point I realized it was time for me to come out. A few days later I found myself standing in the basement as my mom was practicing piano. “I’m gay.” I said quite bluntly. It was a shock for her certainly but she was absolutely loving and supportive. In fact, all of my family and friends were supportive as the word spread. Within a year of coming out I met my first boyfriend, Krystian. For four years we enjoyed a deeply loving relationship full of beautiful memories and lots of laughs. This is what is like to be a gay youth in the 21st century. Surprised? We are so used to hearing the story about the gay teen that was rejected by his family or even worse— he committed suicide. This is an unfortunate truth and we have the best organizations working on it. One of my favorites is The Trevor Project where I am donating 10% of my book profits. There is a new story emerging that needs to be told. Focusing our efforts on telling a new story of the healthy gay man will create a context for the next generation of gay youth to live into.

Social Constructs:  Why will telling a new story help? A social construct is something that is generally agreed upon. Human beings agree on things through language thus a social construct is created by language. The story that is being told (using language) can impact reality by becoming a social construct. When we look back to Ancient Greece a great example is provided. In Athens, homosexuality was a normal and an integral part of how their society functioned. A male Athenian citizen would take on a younger man, the former being the erastís and the latter being the eranamus. The erastís would be responsible for the eranamus’ formal education including being a scholar, gymnast, artist and warrior. He would also teach the young man to be a lover. This was not a scene out of the bathes but a way of forging a bond so he could be role model. This may not be the ideal way to express homosexuality but this shows that throughout time the social constructs around homosexuality have changed. How do they change? They change by story telling, by language and by agreement.

Looking on the Bright Side:  Currently, the social construct around homosexuality has a few different aspects. Some of the major tones are ideas like: not acceptable, acceptable, a struggle, teasing, bullying, and suicide. It is different depending on where you are living in the country. Generally, it is something like a shell or wall over the gay populations head. Something to break through and something that constantly puts up resistance. We have demonstrated in the streets and in the courts. We have started to break that wall down. We are at a point where we must begin to also tell the positive story of being gay. This is what will make that wall (social construct) disappear for future generations. It may not be gone by time we are gone but we must think bigger then our lifetime. We must be bigger then our own lives and live to strive for the whole of humanity to thrive. So when you talk to the youth and when you share yourself as a gay man support them in their struggle. But really, really stress the marvelous life and joy it is to be a gay man. They will take that and run with it. This goes for our world as well. In the west, we are very lucky and many gay men around the world do not have the opportunity we have. It makes it even more important for us to tell this story.

Sam’s Story:  Sam’s Story is my way of telling my story. Sharing my life, my love and my struggle. It shows not only love on a surface level, but love that is deep and transformative. I believe when you meet a soul mate they help you grow into a better version of yourself. They help you transform old attitudes and past experiences that no longer benefit you. They also bring this love out of you that you have never seen before, a love you can cherish and share. If you are interested in supporting this movement towards a more positive gay future get your copy of Sam’s Story. It could be for yourself or a loved one. Pass on the love and tell the good story.

Guest Post: A National Pastime: Karaoke and the Filipinos

Thank you for having me here today and for taking part of the blog tour for The Way You Look Tonight.

When I showed the cover for the book, someone asked me about the significance of the microphone. That microphone is very important for Jamie’s character. He’s in a strange land, has no family to go home to, keeps too many secrets for his father, and never talks about his private life. In short, he’s miserable. But then again, he’s also a Spanish mestizo Filipino, or mixed Spanish and Filipino ancestry. And Filipinos love to sing.

I don’t know anyone in my country who does not sing, or attempt to sing, or think they can sing, or … let’s leave it there. We sing when we’re happy, sad, angry, in pain, bewildered, in love, dreaming… we sing in every occasion, in every corner, with or without a microphone. As for how they look at Karaoke, I think it would be an understatement to say that Filipinos love karaoke. Truth is, we love it so much, it is considered a national pastime and there are no homes without one. If they do claim they don’t have one, they’re television would definitely have at least one channel devoted to one. Yes, we have cable channels that devote the entirety of its programs to karaoke.

Jamie deals with life in general just like any Filipino would: by singing. He loves to go to a karaoke bar and sing the tunes in front of a crowd. If he could get the crowds to participate, he feels good about himself. It’s the only medium where he can let out his feelings without revealing his emotions to the world. By singing, he can deal with life and let off the energy that drives his depression. It is his antidote to life. He loves to sing rock tunes for they’re fun and engages a crowd. When he meets Miles who is older and much prefers quieter music, he sings a standard—The Way You Look Tonight—it’s different but it’s still singing and it shows Miles how much Jamie truly cares for him. And that is the most important thing.

Excerpt

Back in Manila, I had been vomiting into the pail my private nurse was holding up for me when my father entered the room, accompanied by Letty. He rushed the nurse out the door while Letty took over pail duty.

“Jamie, you are leaving for LA once we get you out of here. Dr. Martinez has been instructed to clear you to be released from the hospital.” My father was succinct.

“Wha… why?” I tried to speak, but emesis got in the way.

“Margarita. She has finally gone off the deep end. She and your brothers are meeting with the board. I sent in my resignation last night and they only just got the email. I am leaving for Morocco in two hours, and you are flying out as soon as Dr. Martinez gives you something to put a stop to your vomiting. Letty has sent all the details to your alternate email account.”

I tried to sit up, confused about what was going on, but Letty pressed me back onto the bed. I squinted up at her, and then at my father. “What’s going on?”

“Everything is in the email I sent you. Don’t think about anything else right now, just focus on getting well enough to stand without falling on your face. You need to take that flight. It’s going to be a long one and you’ll need your energy to get things moving,” Letty said.

“Call me once you get to LA. I will send you an email with my new contact numbers.” My father sighed and ran his hand over his face. “I won’t see you for a long time, hijo, but you need to get out as quickly as you can. It’s best you don’t know anything until you get there. Letty will get in touch with you as soon as you’re settled in the hotel. Remember: get to LA and follow the instructions. Once you’re done, call me. That’s all you need to know for now.”

My father leaned down to kiss my head, but wrinkled his nose and shook my hand instead. He turned to leave, then hesitated. Returning to my side, he closed his mouth, as if not daring to breathe in, and then bent to hug me. “I love you, hijo. I wish I could explain more but there’s so little time. I’ll see you on the other side,” he said as he patted my back. Then he turned away, avoiding my eyes, and left the room.

Issue No. 1 by Eric Gober

Uh oh, the LAPD, America’s baddest badasses. No one was faster than their speeding bullets. Or able to bend their reinforced steel cuffs with bare hands. They tolerated no nonsense from superheroes or Toontown denizens. Superman, Batman, Spiderman, and Yosemite Sam had all been herded off Hollywood Boulevard, absolutely powerless in the force’s Kryptonite shackles. I was certain I was next. They were going to haul me down to the station, where they’d snap pictures while I posed, and I wouldn’t get paid a dime. My poor kisser was going to end up in their humiliating comic book of superhero mug shots. Alphabetically speaking, I’d occupy the panel between Bizarro and Doctor Strange. That sucked. I wanted to be sandwiched between superherodom’s hottest blonds.

“Aquaman and Flash Gordon,” I muttered.

“Oh, poor Cap!” Snow White lamented. “You’re not thinking straight!”

“Move along, folks.”

Whoa, who belonged to that sexy voice? I looked over my shoulder as the crowd around me dispersed. Beyond the batty bongo player, I beheld the most fetching man ever to wear LAPD’s midnight blue. He filled out that stretch-nylon uniform better than Magic Mike could have, his badge gleamed like an Oscar caught in a 20th Century Fox searchlight, and the holstered gun barrel resting stiff on his thigh was much longer than Dirty Harry’s. I eyed the piece cautiously. His chamber was fully loaded and ready to fire, I presumed.

He knelt and gently placed a hand on my uniform. “How are you feeling, buddy?”

I glanced at his golden nametag. “A little foolish, Officer Buck. TMZ’s about to tell the world I got my butt kicked by Cookie Monster.”

“We got a statement from the woman whose phone you saved. What you did was heroic.”

I gazed into his warm gray eyes and sensed he wasn’t being ironic. Then I noticed a deep scar on his left ear. Had a villain gashed him with a knife? I looked away, feeling more foolish. “It was nothing really, compared to what you do. Were you able to catch them?”

As CEO of his company, Carrington Enterprises, Seth Burns is a take-charge kind of guy, and he is instantly smitten by the artist helping with his newest project. When he witnesses James suffer a panic attack, a protective instinct he never knew he had kicks in. He truly believes nothing is unobtainable—including James—if he’s willing to put in the time and effort.

James is shy and confused by Seth’s interest in him as a person. With Seth’s support, can he work through his fears to finally find the true love he deserves, or will someone finally land the crushing blow he won’t survive?

Strength to Let Go

by Alina Popescu

Series: Tales of the Werewolf Tribes, Book One

Synopsis

After being abandoned by his mates, Shiki Kirishima, beta of the Dragons of the Fang werewolf tribe, returns to his home in Tokyo.

Crippled by grief, Shiki decides to end it all by going into the territory of the Siberian Killers tribe and challenging them to a battle to the death.

His death.

StrengthtoLetGo-smallpreview

Ganzorig, beta of the Siberian Killers, however, sees the potentially disastrous consequences of having Shiki die in battle.

Instead, he saves him.

Having suffered loss himself, Ganz takes it upon himself to help Shiki deal with his pain.

Blake, Shiki’s best friend since childhood, is as determined to show him there is life after a wolf’s ultimate loss.

Could there also be something ‘more’ for them after friendship?

Guest Post – How to Deal with a Stubborn Character

Here’s an easy guide to dealing with a stubborn character. Why? Because I had to deal with Shiki, main character of Strength to Let Go, and maybe you’ll find this useful. Shiki is stubborn, never shuts up, and never rests until he gets his own way. My way was to publish his brother’s book first, to introduce Shiki in it, and then move on to tell his story. Sounds good, right?

Not to Shiki, it didn’t! He kept talking and talking until I changed the order and wrote his book first. So how do you deal with such a character? Simple: you give in. You stop fighting it and just go along with him until the story is written and he finally lets you be. And breathe!

Sounds scary? I imagine having one crazy character ruin your carefully laid plans is frightening. You can’t hate the brat, can you? You’ve created him and you love him. But is it okay for a character to have such power, to dictate how you tell a story and when? Yes, yes it is! The voice of a character demanding attention is the one you should listen to. It’s what inspires you most  at that point of your writing career and if you try to force yourself to focus on something else… you will fail.

This was not the first time my characters and I wanted different things. I tried to fight them before, it still ended up being as they said it should be. They also happened to be right, the story made more sense that way. So with Shiki, I already knew what happened when I tried all the other ways – ignore the character, just keep writing it like you wanted it, make up reasons you were right and they were wrong… I knew for a fact it wouldn’t work, so I readily gave in.

Does that make me a pushover in how my characters treat me? Every. Single. Time! I still think it’s all worth writing a better story.

Susan Mac Nicol’s 2 Year Anniversary Celebration

banner

I love Susan Mac Nicol’s books so it was wonderful to be asked to participate in her Two Year Anniversary celebrations. CONGRATULATIONS, SUSAN! ❤

It got me thinking about Susan’s books so I thought I’d pull a review from the vault and share with you. Here’s my review from November 2013, for one of my favourites, Saving Alexander.

Saving Alexander

The blurb

Punishing himself for a horrific past that is not his fault, bestselling author Alexander Montgomery seeks redemption and love—and perhaps he will find it.

Famous author though he may be, Alexander Montgomery is not someone you take home to meet Mother. Seriously flawed, damaged by a horrific past, he’s trying hard to claw his way back to normality. But how can anyone respect what he truly is? His therapy involves regular sessions at Study in Scarlet, an exclusive S&M club.

Then comes Sage. Tall, with black hair and blue eyes, an up-and-coming actor with impossible charm and boy-next-door good looks, he’s the perfect choice to play the leading man in a TV adaptation of Alex’s last best-seller. Even more, he is a man you introduce to your family. Which Alex would do—if he weren’t taken by another man who offers the punishments Alex prays will wipe away the past and make him the person he wants to be. Yet, perhaps there is another path to redemption. If only the solution would reach out and touch him.

The review

It feels a little strange to be saying how much I loved a book about a man punishing himself for the sins of others but I so much enjoyed this story! Susan Mac Nicol tells a wonderful tale as she pairs a very broken man with the one man who can deliver him a future.

It was heartbreaking to read of Alexander’s torment, of his traumatic past and the way he viewed himself due to the actions of others.“I’m so scared I’ll never be able to have a proper relationship, that I’ll always be on my own because no one wants damaged goods.” As well as seeing a professional psychologist, he chooses to punish himself physically during regular S&M sessions with Eric. These ‘therapy’ sessions are violent and savage and provide a direct contrast to the physical relationship that Alex shares with Sage.

Sage is gorgeous. He is also caring and very compassionate. He is so accepting of Alex’s situation, seeing the man behind the emotional and physical scars. He does make the perfect saviour.

Jealousy does play a role in the story as Sage battles with Alex’s dependency on Eric and there are ramifications as a result of Alex’s changing needs.

The plot is unique with the romance between Alex and Sage paralleling Alex’s involvement with Eric, while events occur putting lives at risk, all set against a backdrop of a TV series film set.

From my heartbreak for Alex, my pure hatred of Eric and my admiration and respect for Sage, this was an emotional journey. Highly recommended!

Excerpt

Sage moved toward Alex swiftly and Alex flinched as if he expected him to hit him or worse. Instead, Sage pulled him close, kissing him with a hunger that he hadn’t ever felt before for a man. Alex stiffened at first and then finally relaxed into him, his arms wrapping tightly around Sage’s neck, his mouth devouring Sage’s in a kiss that seemed to swallow him whole. Alex’s hands wound themselves tightly into Sage’s hair as he ground his mouth against his, pressing his body against Sage’s, leaving no doubt how the man felt.

Alex seemed to want to meld them together as one. Eventually they needed to come up for air and when they did, they were gasping at the intensity of their passion for each other.

“Jesus, Sage, I wasn’t expecting that. I didn’t think you’d want me after that story,” Alex breathed against Sage’s mouth, driving him even crazier with desire.

Sage thought he might explode there and then. “Does this feel like a man who doesn’t want to be with you?” His voice was low as he ran his hands over Alex’s hips, pressing himself against him.

Both men moaned at feeling their hardness against each other’s stomachs. Alex reached down to caress Sage’s groin.

“God, don’t do that,” Sage groaned. “I’m barely holding it in as it is.”

Alex’s low chuckle made Sage’s control even more difficult as Alex reached out first to turn out the light Sage had originally come to switch off, then to pull Sage over to the two -seater couch in the corner of the office. The room was now pitch dark with only the dim streets lights from outside shining through.

“It’s not the Ritz but it’ll have to do. I so want you to fuck me, Sage. It’s all I’ve been thinking about for weeks,” Alex murmured, unzipping his jeans, tugging them and his silk boxers down over his hips.

His erection sprung out, ready and glistening with moisture. Sage couldn’t take his eyes off it as he yanked down his own pants. Alex reached out and pulled Sage’s shirt over his head, then slid a hand through his chest hair and his shoulders. Sage closed his eyes at Alex’s touch, feeling himself stiffen even more, his breath ragged and deep.

“Christ, Alex,” Sage murmured, knowing his limits and conscious that he’d reached most of them. “I’m not made of bloody steel, and you’ve been driving me crazy for weeks as well.”

“I have to leave my shirt on, Sage.” Alex’s voice was filled with resolve. “I’m not ready to take it off yet.”

Sage nodded. “If that’s what you want.” His hands stroked Alex’s back through the fabric, feeling the play of the man’s muscles beneath his eager fingers. He pushed Alex back onto the studio couch, covering him with his own body, so the men’s cocks were sandwiched together, skin to skin, slickness to slickness.

“No foreplay needed,” Alex whispered in his ear, his breath tickling the sensitive skin . “I just want to feel you inside me. It’s all I want right now.”

About Susan

64729591Susan Mac Nicol is a self confessed bookaholic, an avid watcher of videos of sexy pole dancing men, geek, nerd and in love with her Smartphone. This little treasure is called ‘the boyfriend’ by her long suffering husband, who says if it vibrated, there’d be no need for him. Susan hasn’t had the heart to tell him there’s an app for that…

She is never happier than when sitting in the confines of her living room/study/on a cold station platform scribbling down words and making two men fall in love. She is a romantic at heart and believes that everything happens (for the most part) for a reason.  She likes to think of herself as a ‘half full’ kinda gal, although sometimes that philosophy is sorely tested.

Lover of walks in the forest, theatre productions, dabbling her toes in the cold North Sea and the vibrant city of London where you can experience all four seasons in a day , she is a hater of pantomime (so please don’t tar and feather her), duplicitous people, bigotry and self righteous idiots.

In an ideal world, Susan Mac Nicol would be Queen of England and banish all the bad people to the Never Never Lands of Wherever -Who Cares. As that’s never going to happen, she contents herself with writing her HEA stories and pretending, that just for a little while, good things happen to good people.

GUEST POST: Tyler Knoll’s Just for Fun Series by AB Gayle

Today we have a Guest Post from AB Gayle who talks about humour.

Tyler Knoll's Just For Fun Tour

Tyler Knoll’s Just For Fun Series (Books 1-4)

By A.B Gayle

Synopsis

Tyler Knoll was born one wild, stormy night in April 2013.

Of course, Tyler might tell you he was born twenty years earlier, but should we believe anything he says? That’s for you to decide.

In Tyler’s first adventure—like many a gay man before him—he was SNARED by gay porn, wallowing in tales of bigger, stronger, harder….

SNARED-TKJFF

Then his fickle mind was seduced and SHREDDED by the prospect of BDSM and slavery.

Shredded-TKJFF

When a Big Misunderstanding SLASHED at Tyler’s sanity, almost costing him his life, he turned to another genre for his salvation. But even this encounter proved potentially hazardous—not from freezing temperatures, but at the hands of irate fans.

SLASHED-TKJFF

Finally, tired and SCREWED by his all his trials and tribulations, he discovers—like many storybook heroes before him—that sometimes Mr. Right is closer than we think.

Screwed-TKJFF

GUEST POST

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to write a blog to accompany the release of “Tyler Knoll’s Just for Fun.”

This book nearly didn’t see the light of day. I was told by one publisher that humor doesn’t sell. That it didn’t match their readership. They said it would do better with a publisher better known for a more off-beat library.

For a while, I despaired at being able to find someone who would love Tyler Knoll as much as I did. Then I submitted “Just for Fun” to Wayward Ink Publishing and was overjoyed when it was accepted. Their name certainly suggests they aren’t tied to the traditional. And that’s a good thing. Reading would get very boring if there was no variety.

In fact, how often have you heard people wish there were more books that made them laugh or at least provided a welcome break from non stop angst or depressing reality?

That’s the audience this book is aimed at.

The problem is that humor is very personal. One person may love slapstick with ridiculous characters doing ridiculous things, whereas this style of humor can make other readers squirm. They may be attracted to the more self-deprecating form where the laugh flicks back to settle on the shoulders of the viewpoint protagonist.

Sometimes they fall flat, especially with people for whom English is not their first language who might miss subtle word plays. Humor also varies from country to country. Heck the word itself even varies from the British humour to the US humor.

You’d think comedy would be easy to write. Boy, I soon learned how wrong that is. Books that make you laugh all the way through are bloody difficult to write. Sustaining the same level of hilarity may not even suit the topic.

Few books are pure comedies. They may have romantic elements or be combined with action or even science fiction. Check out this list of Best Humorous Gay Romances on Goodreads. The majority may have a couple of funny scenes or characters who have snappy dialogue, but very few of them were written as comedies.

There is even a lot of variety within the comedy genre. There is a huge difference between parody and satire where the reader may find their sacred taboos being mocked and simple dialogue based jokes.

Some comedies revolve around the whacky secondary character. The ditzy best friend. The loud-mouthed drag queen. The crazy pet.

Some are like Funniest Home Videos where we giggle (sometimes with a guilty conscience) at the expression on the kid’s face when he falls off the swing and ends up in the wading pool.

Much tougher to write is the comedy that revolves around the main character. If he starts out being a klutzy clown and ends up unchanged, still as ditzy as he started, the story can feel shallow.

So the humor in “Tyler Knoll’s Just for Fun” changes much like Tyler changes because of all he has experienced.

Hopefully, you’ll still be smiling at the end but for a different reason. It will be a rueful smile. You’ll miss Tyler’s refreshing, candid innocence, but you’ll appreciate he couldn’t stay like that for the rest of his life.

Now I’d like to throw the ball into your reader’s court. What are your favourite comedies? Why did you like them? Which bits of “Tyler Knoll’s Just for Fun” made you laugh loudest?
