Are you looking for A Summer Fling? #FREE #gayromance #mmromance

summer_fling-200x300Blurb

Daniel falls hard for a guest at the hotel where he works. Ryan McFarland is frantically trying to finish his novel on a deadline and cannot be distracted. The two men find their attraction impossible to ignore, however. The only question is what will happen when it’s time for Ryan to leave.
A Summer Fling was originally published in 2011 under the title Surf’s Up, as part of the Goodreads M/M Romance Group’s “Don’t Read in the Closet” fest. Bite the Dust, a short story based on a fictional character in Surf’s Up, was a finalist in the “Just One Bite” Contest. The contest specifically called for a vampire-based story under 3000 words, which is why it’s so short.

Synopsis

Jason Wadsworth is finally headed to university. Leaving behind his father’s cattle ranch in favor of the posh, gaslit streets of Perdana, Jason is determined to climb the social ladder and forget his country roots. If only his father had gifted him with a more upscale slave.

Kale’s been a country slave his whole life. All he wants is to keep his head down and live as comfortable an existence as possible. Unfortunately, his dramatic master despises him and makes life difficult at every turn.

Humbled by his first breakup, Jason grows to appreciate his ever-faithful slave and soon discovers that Kale is everything he’s ever wanted. Now he needs to prove to Kale that his love is genuine.

Kale, meanwhile, tries to convince himself that he simply feels the devotion of a slave to his master, but his actions prove what his mind is unwilling to accept: he’s falling in love. When Jason’s future happiness is in jeopardy, Kale sets himself on a course to make Jason’s dreams come true, even if it means facing up to the fact that, for the first time in his life, he loves someone else more than he loves himself.

Follow Jason and Kale as the rely on the strength of their devotion to each other to weather the storms they unwittingly enter in their quest for peace.

Measure of Devotion is a bittersweet love story that contains sexual content and adult language.

Excerpt

Jason smiled and lifted his head up for a kiss. Kale was happy to oblige. Moving his hand to the crook of Jason’s neck, Kale deepened the kiss. When he began to feel Jason’s erection against his leg, he broke away. Tonight he wanted to prolong things. He finished undressing Jason and then removed his own clothes. Going back to Jason’s ribs, he picked up where he’d left off. Slowly his lips and hands explored every inch of Jason’s body, paying homage to the man who had given up everything for him. The only place that was left untouched was his cock. That would wait.

Kale sat up on his knees and gazed down at Jason, marveling at how perfect he looked, pale skin against the dark green of the comforter. If things were different, Kale would have taken him, rough and passionate, but as much as Kale wanted to, he couldn’t. He was the slave and Jason was the master, but more importantly, Jason needed to feel in control right now, empowered. More than anything, Jason needed to know that he had Kale and wasn’t going to lose him.

Kale reached across the bed and got the oil from the bedside table. Slowly, he prepared himself, locking eyes with Jason and seeing the lust building in them, a lust he knew was mirrored in his own eyes. When he was done, he moved on all fours to Jason’s side and leaned down to whisper in his ear. “I’m ready for you, master. I’m yours, and I’ll never turn you away.” When he pulled back, he saw a flash of possessiveness in Jason’s eyes before he got up and ran a hand down Kale’s side as he positioned himself behind him.

“Yes, you’re mine, and I’m never giving you up.” Jason entered him in one long thrust, groaning as Kale gasped. It wasn’t harsh, but it was firm and exactly what both of them needed. For a moment, Jason was still inside Kale, letting him adjust while he rubbed his hands up and down his back murmuring, “Mine.” Then he started thrusting, quickly finding a rhythm. Kale bucked his hips back, meeting each stroke and groaning at the pleasure he felt. Gods, he hoped Jason wouldn’t take long. His body was already thrumming with the effort to hold back. There was no way he was going to allow himself to come first.

Kale began to grip Jason each time he entered, showing his eagerness and urging him to lose control. Just when Kale thought Jason was close, Jason leaned over him to speak in his ear. “Eager, are we? I don’t know why. You won’t be coming tonight until I say.”

Kale groaned and buried his head in the bed. At least Jason was back in control where, whether Kale liked it or not, he needed him to be. How had he gotten to the point where this man commanded him so completely? The thought was fleeting; at the moment he didn’t care. All he cared about was completing Jason and then hoping his master would let him come.

Thankfully, Jason began to pick up the pace. Only trouble now was that the faster pace meant it took all of Kale’s concentration to not come. “You’re mine, Kale; I chose you. Whether you like it or not, you’re the one I’m going to be with.” He liked it all right, he liked it too much. Jason’s hands moved from Kale’s back to grasp his hips painfully. The pain cut through Kale’s need and centered him, giving him something to focus on to keep his orgasm at bay. A few more harsh thrusts and Jason stilled, crying out as he came.

Spent, Jason fell on Kale and rolled over, bringing him with him so they were spooning. Jason’s hand crept over Kale’s hip and lightly stroked his erection, eliciting a whimper from Kale. “You’re going to have to hold this for me for a while if you want release tonight.” Kale’s only answer was to desperately thrust forward into Jason’s hand. “Are you disobeying me, Kale?”

Immediately, Kale stilled. “No. Yes. No, master.”

“Hmm. Now roll over and take care of me. The sooner you get me ready to go again, the sooner you can come.”

Kale rolled over and glared at Jason, relaxing boneless and sated with that pleasant post coital glow. Jason laughed. “You really need to learn to control that temper of yours. Patience is a virtue.”

“One you don’t seem to have.” Kale plopped next to Jason and began to rub his chest.

Jason laughed and covered Kale’s hand with his own. “True, but I never did claim to be virtuous. You’re the only one who seems to think I’m perfect.”

“And you’re the only person who seems to think I’m worth anything. I guess we’re cut out for each other.”

Jason sobered immediately and grabbed Kale by the hair, forcing him to meet his eyes. “Don’t speak like that. You really think I’d own a worthless slave? That I’d take a worthless man to my bed? Just because you had to settle for me because I was lucky enough to get you doesn’t mean anyone thinks you’re worthless. And anyone who says otherwise can come tell me to my face.”

Kale marveled at the sincerity in Jason’s voice. He really believed Kale was worthwhile, and he would fight any man who challenged that. He’d lose, but he’d fight them just the same. Jason held Kale’s head firmly in his grip until Kale nodded his understanding. After he was released, Kale got up and fetched a washcloth to clean Jason. By the time he was done, Jason was already beginning to harden again. Wanting his own release, Kale reached down and began to stroke Jason’s shaft back to a full erection. Jason relaxed into the bed and closed his eyes, enjoying the sensation. Looking down on Jason, Kale was so absorbed in studying his face that he was surprised when he felt Jason’s warm hand curl around his own, halting his movement.

“That’s enough. I have other plans.”

Kale grabbed the oil, readying to be taken again. Jason reached out and took hold of his wrist. “Give it to me.” Puzzled, Kale handed over the container and watched wide-eyed as Jason poured some out and began to finger himself. Kale froze, not wanting to believe his luck.

Jason chuckled. “Kale, I know what you need tonight, what you’ve wanted since I came home. I might not have succeeded tonight, but I’m still going to take care of you.”

Kale’s mouth had gone dry. “I don’t need to; you can take me again.”

Jason got up on his knees and came flush against Kale. “Yes, you do need it. And even if you didn’t, I do. I need to know you love me, that you want me as much as I want you. Tonight, I need to feel that I’m yours.”

Kale closed his eyes and shuddered. How well Jason knew him. When he opened his eyes, he saw Jason looking so vulnerable that it was hard to believe he was the same man that had just taken him so forcefully. Leaning forward, he kissed him and felt Jason’s body melt against his. Snaking his hands up his back, he gently lowered him to the bed. Once they were situated, Kale looked down at Jason. “Are you sure?”

“More sure than I’ve ever been of anything.”

Kale simply nodded and inserted a finger. He wasn’t going to risk hurting him or worse. After he had carefully stretched Jason out and slathered himself with oil, he lined up his cock and slowly slipped in, groaning as the heat of Jason’s body enveloped his own. Once inside, he settled, letting Jason become accustomed to him. This felt so good, so good to be surrounded by Jason, to feel his heat on his cock, so good to be allowed to do this because Jason sensed it was important and cared enough to let him. He opened his eyes and looked down on Jason who had a look of sheer contentment on his face that made Kale wonder how he’d gotten this lucky.

“You may come whenever you’re ready, Kale.” Jason clamped down on him to emphasize his point.

Kale leaned down and kissed Jason on the lips, grasping his head between his hands, as he slowly began to thrust, savoring the moment. When he pulled away, he kept his eyes on Jason’s face, wanting to see all of his reactions. The looks of pure bliss that erupted on Jason’s face gave Kale a feeling of pride at being the one to deliver such pleasure. Kale felt more than ever that he belonged to this man, but he also acknowledged for the first time that Jason belonged to him as well.

The sheer emotion of the moment was overwhelming. He couldn’t control himself anymore. Quickening the pace, he dropped his head to Jason’s chest and wrapped one arm around him. With his other hand, he reached between their bodies and grabbed Jason’s cock. Even though his head had succumbed to a haze of feeling, he knew that he wanted Jason to come with him. There was no way that he would answer Jason’s generosity with selfishness. It was sloppy work as his pleasure mounted, but he managed to stroke Jason in time with his thrusts.

Jason’s hands came to Kale’s head, holding him tight and running his fingers through his hair as he moaned in pleasure. Pressed up against Jason’s body, Kale became intoxicated by the heady scent of sweat. Darting his tongue out, he tasted the salt on Jason’s skin, and it made him hungry for more. Groping with lips and tongue, he found Jason’s nipple and began to play with it. The sounds coming from Jason were now more urgent, and Kale felt his hands tighten in his hair. Kale increased the rhythm of his thrusts and stroking until Jason’s grip turned to a vice and he came with a loud growl. Kale released the nipple and shouted out his relief as he came too.

Once the last wave of pleasure had receded, he rolled off Jason, only to be pulled into a deep kiss. When Jason broke away, he rested on Kale’s chest. The weight felt comfortable and right, and when Kale began to stroke Jason’s back, he felt the most possessive urge he’d ever experienced.

Jason nuzzled against Kale, and goose bumps began to break out on their skin as the cooling air hit the sheen of sweat that covered them both. “I’m so lucky to have you.”

“What, you don’t think Demetri would have been as good in the sack? No, I’m the lucky one. I never thought I’d have a master like you.”

Jason’s voice was heavy with sleep. After two orgasms, he was struggling to stay awake. “Demetri’s an ass, and I was stupid for wanting him. Wouldn’t trade you for the world.”

“Or a woman.”

Jason laughed, and Kale thought it was the sweetest sound he had ever heard. “Or a woman.”

A few minutes later, Jason went limp and heavy on Kale’s chest. The look on his face was so pure and unguarded that it took Kale’s breath away. Yes, Jason was his, he knew that now. Tightening his grip around the other man, Kale also knew that he would do whatever he had to in order to take care of what was his.

❄ Xavier’s Xmas by Amber Kell (It’s a freebie!) ❄

Xavier's XmasXavier’s Xmas by Amber Kell

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The Blurb…

When Xavier’s roommate, Frankie, leaves him for a new boyfriend, he thinks his Christmas is going to be a sad affair. Until Frankie comes back and tells him he made a terrible mistake. Will Xavier accept Frankie’s love as the present he deserves?

So what did I think?

This was short and sweet, as Xavier and Frankie find happiness at Christmas. It tells the tale of two men who have lived together for three years as roommates, but it’s not until Frankie moves out to go live with his boyfriend, that they realise what was right under their noses all along.

What starts as being a lonely Christmas, ends up being the best Christmas of his life as Frankie returns home. Nearly losing each other forces them to face their fears and take a risk to be together.

A nice happy ending as Xavier, the older accountant, stands up for his much younger partner!

“I know you worry about the age differnce, but you are everything I’ve ever wanted.
You are my permanent Christmas present.”
The accompanying Christmas carol is therefore “You’re My Christmas Present” by Jimmy Beaumont and the Skyliners.

I downloaded this story free from Amber Kell’s website. It had a couple of minor editing problems (the title and author’s name appeared randomly throughout) but was easy to overlook. Download here.

❄ Christmas Delights (it’s a freebie!) ❄

Today’s Christmas reviews are from two of the short stories in the Christmas Delights anthology. It’s a wonderful collection of stories and is available for free from Love Lane Books (Love Lane Books Christmas Anthology 2013).

Christmas Delights

As promised, I’ve accompanied each review with a matching carol. The stories in this review are:

  • Gifts from the Tree by Kay Berrisford
  • Christmas in Hawaii by Valynda King

❄❄❄❄❄❄❄

Gifts from the Tree by Kay Berrisford

Accompanied by: O Christmas Tree (Aretha Franklin style)

The Blurb: When Phin deserts James on Christmas Eve, offering vague excuses, James is left wondering how well he knows the man he’s been seeing. Phin, an expert on forest mythology, clearly has secrets, which doesn’t make James feel any better as he faces Christmas alone. But when an attempt to collect a Christmas tree takes a strange and magical turn, James finds out the supernatural happenings in the woods and Phin’s absence could be linked.

So what did I think? Totally unique, for me at least as I’ve never read anything like it. I mean tree shifters wouldn’t usually be my story of choice! I definitely don’t think I’ll be looking at my Christmas tree the same! 🙂 This is a sweet story of two lecturers. James is a bookworm and Phin is his crush. They are just starting  a relationship when Phin says he can’t spend Christmas Eve with James as planned. James’ night starts out lonely before strange things start to happen when James heads out to cut down a tree. Let’s just say it gives new meaning to ‘popping wood’ as James is protected by a strange forest warden and ends up spending a very unexpected Christmas!  He’d gone mad. Or he was dead. Or his would-be boyfriend had just shifted from the form of an oak back into a devastatingly handsome human with a massive hard-on.  3.5 stars

Christmas in Hawaii by Valynda King

Accompanied by: Mele Kalikimaka (Jimmy Buffett version)

The Blurb: River is a mess, well so he thinks. He has OCD and Agoraphobia, disorders he has been learning to deal with since he was a kid. Now as an adult and years of hard work and therapy he has a job working from home as a trouble shooter for a technology company. Everything seemed fine until a new owner bought the company and his world tilted on it’s axis. Now he’s on  a plane heading to Hawaii just before Christmas. His anxiety is through the roof on the verge of a panic attack and the only light at the end of this tunnel is the Adonis sitting a few rows back and knowing he was finally going to meet Coolidge.

So what did I think? At the risk of  making myself seem like a very uncaring person, I was actually put off when I first realised  that one of the MCs had OCD. I’ve seen these things handled poorly in the past and worried it would make it hard for me to like the character of River. But I shouldn’t have worried! The OCD was handled with realism (no pulling punches, River did the whole counting repetitive thing) but was beautifully accepted by Coolidge who was so understanding, earning River’s honesty and trust. Loved the characters names – Cool and River – can’t get much cooler than that! Plus I loved that the guys were physically attracted from first sight but it becomes clear that they know a lot more about each other than first thought and their attraction is more than just hot sex. You’re the guy that I can talk to when I am happy or angry. You’re the guy I can talk to about anything and you keep my secrets. And you’re the guy I think about before I go to sleep. I know you, River, and now I know even more and it doesn’t change a thing. So romantic! 4 stars.

Love Has No Boundaries – Fabulous & FREE m/m short stories – PART I

LHNB

What Is Love Has No Boundaries?

The Goodreads M/M Romance group have run a number of events where we are lucky enough to get to read a collection of free m/m short stories, novellas and novels written by the group’s authors. Previous collections include Don’t Read In The Closet, Hot Summer Days (2011) and Love is Always Write (2012). This year’s collection is Love Has No Boundaries.

Group members were asked to write a story prompt inspired by a photo of their choice. Authors of the group selected a photo and prompt that spoke to them and wrote a short story.

Stories covered in this review are:

  1. Playing for Keeps by Lexi Ander
  2. The Idiots’ Tango by B. Snow
  3. Lost Time by Parker Williams

Playing for KeepsPlaying for Keeps by Lexi Ander

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Blurb…

College running back, Trent Harte, has been living with his lovers, AJ Barnes and Brock Everett, for two years. Caught in a compromising position, rumors abound. It’s hard enough to be an openly gay football player, but gossip and snide comments only adds to his stress. Threats against his partners causes Trent wonder if he should step back from the relationship.

AJ and Brock knows there is something wrong when Trent begins to pull away. A call from Trent’s father only adds to the distress. AJ and Brock refuse to let him shoulder the responsibility alone and they call for help. Will Trent find the strength to withstand the pressure and hold on to those he loves? Or will AJ and Brock be too late to convince Trent that they are playing for keeps?

So what did I think?

The thing I like most about this story was the focus on the depth of love in the menage relationship, not the sex. The three men – Trent, Brock and AJ – obviously care so much about each other, willing to sacrifice their individual dreams, if necessary, to be together.

These are strong men but they are not afraid to express their emotions and take a stand – all for one and one for all!

The story is engaging, the emotions strong, the sex hot and the ending happy.

The only minor niggle I had was the repetitive reference to Trent as ‘their running back’ or ‘the running back’. I got it – he was a running back! Well, maybe I didn’t really get it because I don’t actually know what a running back is but I am sure you know what I mean! The same with AJ who kept being referred to a ‘the former marine’, ‘their Marine’. To me it just doesn’t seem natural to be referring to people by their occupation or former occupation.

Overall, I feel very spoilt, being provided with a long and quality short story for free. Thanks Lexi!

The Idiots' TangoThe Idiots’ Tango by B. Snow

The story prompt…

Dear Author,
My two men can’t STAND each other. It’s not a general dislike and it’s not a case where they can avoid each other.  Unfortunately, they share a circle of friends and family.
They met when they were in high school and there seemed to be a bit of attraction despite their vast differences, but something happened and they are at each other’s throats. Verbal throw-downs, the occasional thrown punch has happened at more than a few shared get togethers.
Dear Author, how can two men who can’t stand each other come to realize that the other man is the one person they can’t and don’t want to live without?

So what did I think?

I loved this story! It was a wonderful journey, spanning many years, from Josh and Stu’s first meeting and kiss that triggers it all.

Josh and Stu don’t see a lot of each other during this time but when they do, sparks fly – usually as they are annoying each other or fighting. Things never end well!

We follow Josh through his career as a professional rugby player and experience all the joys and sorrows of his family life from funerals to weddings, all of which seem to be intertwined with Stu’s family as Josh and Stu’s sisters are best friends.

The final scenes are brilliant – Josh and Stu finally get it together and (view spoiler)[first Josh’s Dad and then Stu’s Mum, walk in on them – hilarious! (hide spoiler)]. There’s tension and stupidity, some sadness and finally happiness plus the story has some genuinely funny moments.

Best line? Josh meeting an older gay couple at a wedding… “Why, when I was young, I had to walk five miles in the snow to get to the nearest glory hole.”

Once again I feel blessed to get such a great story for free!

Lost TimeLost Time by Parker Williams

Story Prompt:

I was hoping you could tell me the story of these two beautiful men?
They have known each other for many years. They were close friends for a long time, but life just got in the way and their competitive careers and busy lives meant they somehow fell out of touch. They never forgot about each other, and they have both been waiting for this moment for years.
I’d like to see an emotional reunion, maybe a hint of hurt/comfort in there somewhere if you can fit it in, but most of all just a whole lot of love (I’m a hopeless romantic!)

So what did I think?

This was sweet and cute and romantic and basically pretty wonderful. Two boys who loved each other (unknown to the other, of course) and drifted apart. Sure, I didn’t understand why two people who felt so strongly about each other could let that happen but didn’t worry too much about that.

What follows is lots of romance as Kurt looks to win Alex’s heart by letting him know how much he cares and explaining some of the events in their past. Notes, picnics, romantic dinners, dancing gorillas with banana messages and radio dedications…perfect.

⌚⌚ Time for a coffee and a quick read? ⌚⌚

small_133316103

Need something quick to read? Below are a couple of short stories, that can be read in under 30 minutes or so. And they cost less than your cup of coffee! I hope you enjoy!

Gypsy RainGypsy Rain by Garrett Leigh

My rating: 4.5  of 5 stars

The Blurb…

Cornish fudge maker Seb Wright is anticipating and dreading the upcoming tourist season with equal measure. The cash injection is more than welcome, the long hours in the sticky, vanilla scented kitchen less so.

A few days into the first tentative sparks of summer a shadowy Good Samaritan catches his eye. Vagrant Dex is a new face in town…a beautiful, sullen enigma, and yet with each busy day that passes, Seb finds himself becoming more and more attracted to the mysterious, young man.

A young man who seems destined to become the heartbeat of a summer he’ll never forget.

So what did I think?

Short but oh, so sweet! This is a beautifully written story.

It is a gentle story that provides a glimpse into the life of Seb, who owns a fudge shop and Dex, a young man who enters his life for a short time.

The author does a wonderful job of describing the setting for the story. It is beautifully descriptive and makes it so easy to imagine the small town of Padstow in Cornwall. There is a real sense of the place and people. Likewise with Seb – although a short story, there is a real feel for the type of man Seb is and of the life he leads.

Seb is intrigued by the quiet and vulnerable Dex and over many weeks they develop a unique friendship. We don’t learn a lot about Dex and even at the end of the story he is still a mystery. “Dex was like a short summer rain: heady, unexpected and all too rare.”

There is no happy ending in the traditional sense, more a reinforcement that some people can enter your life for a short period and touch deeply. “….and as the fast-breaking dawn light crept into the sky, he felt blessed, like he’d been touched by an angel.”

I also adored the cover of this book. It is gorgeous! The author is obviously very talented as she is credited with being the cover artist too!

I will definitely be checking out more work by this author and would love to see a full length novel. Perhaps Seb could get his HEA?

The Blurb…

In this short story, David and Sam are scientists working together on a cure for cancer while struggling to keep their personal lives and relationships intact. When they make a massive breakthrough, they find there are forces at work who don’t want the research to proceed. Facing a choice between his life’s work and the man who has stood at his side, what will David choose to protect?

So what did I think?

This was a freebie so really can’t complain too much! This was one of those stories that had so much potential but didn’t quite follow through.

The story revolves around a scientific research team who are working on a cure for cancer. Leading the team is David and his assistant is Sam. Sam is secretly in love with David. David has a girlfriend who he eventually breaks up with but has no idea that Sam is interested in him. There is some scientific espionage which adds the drama element.

There is a lot packed into a short story but somehow things lost their way as the story came to it’s conclusion. For example, one of the researchers is suddenly revealed to be undercover cop but with no real shock to the revelation and it doesn’t seem very believable. David’s reasons for being with his girlfriend are all over the place. And when David and Sam get together it just happens quickly with no real discussion, just a sudden dropping of pants – one minute talking, the next minute sex!

Maybe this story would have been better as a full length novel, with proper time devoted to the complexities of the story. But I liked it enough to want to check out some other stories by this author.
