“Mayday, Mayday, Black Hammer is hit; I repeat: Mayday, Black Hammer is hit. We’re going down.” Bucky’s voice may have seemed calm to an outsider, but those who knew him understood he was anything but calm. “Mayday, Mayday. Black Hammer’s current location: thirty-three Lat by seventy Long. Repeat. Mayday, Mayday.” Bucky choked out as the cabin of the helicopter quickly filled with smoke.

Samuel J. Stone looked at the other five members of his team. “Fuck,” he mumbled, wondering if perhaps they weren’t going to make it out of this one. He yelled at his best friend Benoit. “After all the fucked-up shit we’ve been through, I’m not gonna fucking die splattered on the side of some mountain in this hellhole.”

“Vasquez, get that damn door open,” Stone yelled across the cabin to the other Marine.

“Gettin’ it, Stone,” Vasquez answered his lieutenant.

Stone opened the opposite door, letting some of the thick smoke billow out of the burning helicopter. He and his fellow Marine, Benoit, looked out the open door. They could tell they were going down fast.

“We’re still too high to jump,” Stone yelled at the others trapped in the flaming bird.

“If there was anywhere to fucking jump to,” Benoit yelled back.

Even with both side doors open, the cold winter wind whipping through the cabin, the acrid black smoke continued to surge in, making their eyes burn, their chests constrict with the lack of breathable air. There was a bitter taste in Stone’s mouth from inhaling the foulness of burning rubber and jet fuel.

Using hand signals to keep from yelling to be heard, Stone motioned for Vasquez and the two others to use the door they had just opened to escape through, while he and Benoit and the new kid, Saundersen, would use the one opposite.

The high-pitched scream of the rotor motor was loud enough to pierce the ear-protection headphones, making it nearly impossible to speak. Each man could barely hear Bucky still calling out a Mayday over the radio, through the headsets.

Synopsis

After trading the barracks for a fixer-upper rental, navy SEAL Zack Nelson wants peace, not a roommate—especially not Pike, who sees things about Zack he most wants to hide. Pike’s flirting puts virgin Zack on edge. And the questions Pike’s arrival would spark from Zack’s teammates about his own sexuality? Nope. Not going there. But Zack can’t refuse.

Pike Reynolds knows there won’t be a warm welcome in his new home. What can he say? He’s an acquired taste. But he needs this chance to get his life together. Also, teasing the uptight SEAL will be hella fun. Still, Pike has to tread carefully; he’s had his fill of tourists in the past, and he can’t risk his heart on another, not even one as hot, as built—and, okay, yeah, as adorable—as Zack.

Living with Pike crumbles Zack’s restraint and fuels his curiosity. He discovers how well they fit together in bed…in the shower…in the hallway… He needs Pike more than he could have imagined, yet he doesn’t know how to be the man Pike deserves.

Excerpt

“What do you mean they’re not coming?” Zack tried hard to sound like the badass navy SEAL he was now. He’d passed all sorts of interrogation training—there was no reason he couldn’t hide that he didn’t particularly like this guy. Or this fancy bar where he and his nontrendy clothes and military haircut were out of place. He’d agreed to go out for drinks with a group. His friend Ryan had promised him a drink for finishing his SEAL qualification training and getting his trident, and Zack had figured dealing with the rest of Ryan’s crowd wouldn’t be horrible. But tolerable was a far cry from being stranded alone with Pike freaking Reynolds without Ryan as a buffer.

“They blew two tires getting out of Santa Monica and are waiting on a repair truck now. Ryan said to have fun without them.” Pike looked harmless enough—shorter than Zack with a lean build and bright red hair and freckles that made him look too young to drink—but Zack knew from experience he was anything but benign. Pike was the type of guy who would flirt with wallpaper, but he seemed to have singled Zack out for special attention ever since their first meeting at a LAN party.

Which was all well and good, but unlike a lot of Ryan’s crowd, Zack wasn’t openly gay. And what Zack hated was that Pike seemed to see through all his “no, really I’m straight” protests and see things Zack refused to even think about. And a whole night with Pike? Torture. And that was coming from someone who’d been tossed into frigid water with his arms and legs bound. Repeatedly.

But he’d happily endure another round of drownproof training if it meant an easy out of this situation.

“Is Landon coming?” Please say it’s not just us. Surely, Pike’s omnipresent sidekick would be there to bail Zack out.

“Nope. He’s doing research at the Hadron Collider for the next few months. Just us, I think.” Pike grinned at him. “Alone at last, right?”

Zack guessed that the Hadron was one of those supersmart things Pike’s crowd just assumed everyone else knew about. He certainly wasn’t about to appear dumb and ask. “You don’t have to stick around on my account,” he said instead.

“Dude.” Pike smacked him on the shoulder. “I’ve had a shit week. Another three interviews for jobs for the fall, another three fuckups on my part. Don’t make me drink alone.”

“I guess I could do a beer.”

“On me, right? We’re all super stoked that you passed SQT.” Pike gave him another of those disarming smiles.

Ba-deep-deep. Zack’s phone chimed. Sure enough, there was a message from Ryan apologizing for bailing. Have fun with Pike, Ryan ended. But whatever you do, don’t let him talk you into shots. He looks scrawny, but he can drink you under the table. Trust me.

Zack shoved his phone away. Nope, no way was he doing shots with Pike. Last thing he needed was to get drunk and forget himself around the guy.

“So what’ll it be? They have a whole selection of craft beers here.” Pike offered him one of the little bar menus artfully strewn around on the huge antique wood bar.

“A Bud’s fine,” Zack said. He’d never developed a taste for the fancy stuff. This whole place was fancier than he was used to, what with the exposed hardwoods everywhere, the prettified bar food emerging from the kitchen, and the painted inspirational quotes behind the bar. Even the name, Mellow, was a far cry from the hole-in-the-wall places he’d drunk at in college or even Big Ted’s, the little sports bar right off base that his fellow SEALs favored.

Pike signaled the burly bartender, who frowned at them after Pike gave their order for a Bud and some fancy-ass beer Zack had never heard of. “Hand stamps, please. Both of you.”

Zack stuck his hand out, showing that the bouncer had indeed checked his ID. Pike put his arm right next to Zack’s—way too close for comfort. “See, look at us, finding things in common.”

“Getting carded is hardly something to be proud of,” Zack mumbled as he pulled his arm away. Back in San Diego, when he went to the bars with his friends, they never got carded anymore. And he liked that—he was twenty-three now, for crying out loud.

“Of course it’s not for you, Muscles.” Pike did that whole standing-too-close thing again, moving over so others could get to the bar.

Zack really shouldn’t like that Pike noticed what the past few months of training had done for his physique. He’d always been lean, but days of log- and boat-carry drills had carved out muscles he hadn’t even been aware he had. Zack accepted his beer from the bartender, then followed Pike to one of the little high-top tables ringing the bar area.

“Seriously, you are jacked now.” Pike winked at him, giving him the sort of once-over Zack’s buddies gave girls in bikinis. “Look at those shoulders. It even makes you look taller.”

Flattery was not going to work on Zack. Not even a bit. Besides, Pike was the short one, probably five seven or so. But Zack was a perfectly respectable five ten. In your boots.

“Truth, man. I just call it like I see it.” Pike shrugged. And that right there was the whole problem with Pike—he had absolutely no filter and a way too keen sense of observation.

GUEST POST: Claiming Dane by Pauline Allan

pa_claiming-dane_md

Blurb

With a past shadowed in vices, Tony Morretti is finally ready to face his demons. A Dominant surgeon, fearless and desperate, he risks everything to leave his career, the empty relationships, the façade of a life he’s created to attend his brother’s memorial. Guilt threatens to drown any hope of a stable future with his family’s forgiveness when his mother asks him not to attend the service. With a wake of devastating decisions, he has to make one more. Stay and risk falling in love with a man threatening to open every wound in his jaded soul or return home and fall deeper into the darkness he’s created.

A wounded soldier, Dane McNeil, has to once again take a risk. A one night stand with the dark haired stranger standing in his hotel lobby would lead to more broken promises, more offers to kneel at the feet of yet another empty affair. “This is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine.” An oath Dane has sworn to live by will now defend his young daughter’s life from her dangerous mother. With a hotel and security business to run, his life has fallen into days of coloring books and leaky faucets. While his heart longs to share a bed with the sexy doctor who’s landed on the doorstep desperate for a room, he knows that handsome smile will lead to more sleepless nights and yet another crack in what’s left of his already shattered heart.

Trust is broken when secrets are revealed and Dane must walk away from the only man he’s ever loved. For a reluctant Dominant, Tony is terrified. He doesn’t need another sub to take care of, another lover incapable of keeping the commanding darkness from killing his soul.

But, Dane’s no longer a sub.
Tony, no longer a Dom.

Claiming Dane is book two in the Hot Southern Nights series. This book can be read as a standalone or with Gilded Lily, book one in this series.

Guest Post

Hearing the boo’s and witchy cackles yet? With handfuls of brightly shimmering candy wrappers scattered over the living room floor I come to you with tales from the dark side. Well, the dark side and the sexy guys kissing side. And, maybe a little bit of chocolate induced coma as well.

In my new release, Claiming Dane, the hunky heroes have pasts that have come full circle and threaten to break their souls to the core. Tony’s rocky history has become Dane’s reality. With an ex-wife—yes I said ex-wife—back to put everyone’s lives in danger, Tony must decide to stay and fight for the only love he’s ever known or leave. Run from the Dom he used to be. Run from the vulnerability of Dane’s gaze when they’re in bed. Run and drown in the darkness forcing his head under the water of his dismal future.

But, Dane’s a Marine and Marines never quit. Twisted tackles and hand-to-hand combat is in his blood. He’s ready to battle for the heart of his man and try like hell not to let the mistakes of his past pull him from his only true shot at happiness.

In all of the turmoil and angst, there’s a sweet face. Caroline McNeill is Dane’s five year old daughter and that’s where the bumps in the night come into play. Dane owns the Wisteria hotel in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. So, now some truth in the weaving of this complex story. The Wisteria was a hotel in the city that now stands as an apartment complex. The charm is gone in reality, but brought back to its glory in the book.

The charm of the hotel is the myth it’s haunted and Caroline loves to tag along with the local ghost hunters to roam the halls hunting for the departed. Truth: I was once a member of a local ghost tracker group and we toured an abandoned state asylum. We were lucky enough to snap pictures and video of some creepy shadows and unexplained phenomena.

Dane is forced to confront his PTSD. With several servicemen in my family, I have watched how they struggled to cope and function with the symptoms they experience. I’m so proud of how well they’ve done.

Weaved throughout the story is another truth. Addiction. I’m a registered nurse. I work with babies who are withdrawing from opiates due to their mother’s drug use during pregnancy. I’ve worked with many women and their families during this difficult process. Melissa, Dane’s ex-wife, is a manifestation of the many experiences I’ve had over the years. This is a crisis in our nation and Melissa’s character is the depiction of those women.

Claiming Dane’s inspiration was drawn from many of my experiences, the ups and downs, the dark and light, the dichotomy between the sacred and the profane. My hope for the readers is this story takes them on an emotional journey where the truth is revealed. That truth being love comes in many forms. Two men. Two women. Many complexities of the heart bring joy to the individual and we are not here to judge that union.

Thank you so much for welcoming me to Two Men are Better Than One. And yes, how true that is…two men are definitly better than one!

BLOG TOUR, EXCERPT AND GIVEAWAY! Broken Soldier by Jamie Lynn Miller

Title: Broken Soldier
Author: Jamie Lynn Miller
Genre: M/M Romance
Release Date: March 5, 2016
Sergeant Connor Finley and Sergeant Shawn Weller are dedicated soldiers working covert ops for Shadow Unit — a joint UK/US anti-terrorism task force.

Partners in the field and out, they had been through hell together for the last four years and made it through standing side by side. But when their latest undercover op to bring down an arms dealer plunges them into a world of drugs, sex and violence, Shawn must literally get in bed with the enemy in order to complete the mission. And Connor is forced to watch, helpless, as his partner is broken into pieces.
Will love be enough to put them both back together or will this be their final mission?

WARNING: Contains scenes of drug use, graphic sex and realistic situations.

Connor cut himself off as Shawn let out an angry yell and swung a wild punch at him. Connor was forced to release Shawn’s wrist to avoid his partner’s fist, which would have caught him right in the face. He stumbled back a step, hitting the refrigerator, nearly losing his footing on the items strewn about on the floor. Just as he straightened up, Shawn grabbed a coffee mug off the counter and hurled it at Connor’s head. Connor dropped to a crouch and the mug smashed into the refrigerator.

Keeping low, Connor went at Shawn like an American football player, ducking under his partner’s arms and catching him around his middle. Shawn’s back hit the edge of the counter and both of them slid to the floor. Shawn’s fists began pummeling at Connor’s arms and chest as Connor got Shawn first onto his back then flipped over onto his stomach, straddling his waist. Shawn tried to buck him off, yelling angrily and Connor was amazed at the strength the desperate craving for the heroin gave him.
“Please, Connor, please,” Shawn pleaded with him, breathing hard. “I just need a little bit. Just a little and I’ll be fine…”
Connor quickly pulled the syringe out of his pocket and used his mouth to pull off the cap, which he spit out onto the floor.
He swallowed hard. “I’m so sorry, mate,” he said, voice rough, then injected Shawn with the sedative.
“I need it, Connor, I need it…” Shawn mumbled as his eyes closed moments later, succumbing to the effects of the sedative.
Connor slid off of Shawn’s body then, slumping against the counter next to him, his face in his hands, gutted to the core by what had just transpired. A lump formed in his throat as he lifted his head and looked at his partner, lying there unconscious. Shawn’s face was drawn, flushed and wet with sweat, battered and bruised with dark circles under his eyes that had looked at him with such pain and desperation.
Shawn was the strongest, bravest man Connor had ever known, now reduced to this broken soldier before him.
All because of duty and loyalty to his unit and his mission. For the first time Connor feared that Shawn had been shattered into too many pieces to ever be put back together again.
His chest constricted at the thought, the grief and anger inside him suddenly too much to contain any longer. He grabbed for Shawn’s hand and held on tight as he broke down, the first sob tearing through him. He cried for Shawn, who was fighting a battle he might not be able to win and he cried for the two of them, wondering how they’d survive if Shawn didn’t.
He cried until there was nothing left inside him, until his eyes ran dry and his throat burned. He gathered Shawn into his arms then and held him tight, wishing he could take his place, but instead willing every ounce of strength he had into him, the only thing he could do.

Uh oh, the LAPD, America’s baddest badasses. No one was faster than their speeding bullets. Or able to bend their reinforced steel cuffs with bare hands. They tolerated no nonsense from superheroes or Toontown denizens. Superman, Batman, Spiderman, and Yosemite Sam had all been herded off Hollywood Boulevard, absolutely powerless in the force’s Kryptonite shackles. I was certain I was next. They were going to haul me down to the station, where they’d snap pictures while I posed, and I wouldn’t get paid a dime. My poor kisser was going to end up in their humiliating comic book of superhero mug shots. Alphabetically speaking, I’d occupy the panel between Bizarro and Doctor Strange. That sucked. I wanted to be sandwiched between superherodom’s hottest blonds.

“Aquaman and Flash Gordon,” I muttered.

“Oh, poor Cap!” Snow White lamented. “You’re not thinking straight!”

“Move along, folks.”

Whoa, who belonged to that sexy voice? I looked over my shoulder as the crowd around me dispersed. Beyond the batty bongo player, I beheld the most fetching man ever to wear LAPD’s midnight blue. He filled out that stretch-nylon uniform better than Magic Mike could have, his badge gleamed like an Oscar caught in a 20th Century Fox searchlight, and the holstered gun barrel resting stiff on his thigh was much longer than Dirty Harry’s. I eyed the piece cautiously. His chamber was fully loaded and ready to fire, I presumed.

He knelt and gently placed a hand on my uniform. “How are you feeling, buddy?”

I glanced at his golden nametag. “A little foolish, Officer Buck. TMZ’s about to tell the world I got my butt kicked by Cookie Monster.”

“We got a statement from the woman whose phone you saved. What you did was heroic.”

I gazed into his warm gray eyes and sensed he wasn’t being ironic. Then I noticed a deep scar on his left ear. Had a villain gashed him with a knife? I looked away, feeling more foolish. “It was nothing really, compared to what you do. Were you able to catch them?”

It was just another night as a cop in small town of Lovelock, Nevada. We never had anything exciting here. Mainly domestic disturbances like the Palmers. Some police offers would’ve preferred more action, but not me. I’d done four years in the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and had gotten tired of dealing with punk gangbangers shooting at me. The three years at Lovelock had been far less exciting but much better for my blood pressure.

After settling the disturbance at the Palmers’ I cruised down Main Street making sure the boarded up buildings hadn’t been broken into by bored teenagers. Thankfully we only had more active businesses than empty ones in town. Not that we were a bustling metropolis by any means. I’d just braked to allow mangy stray black dog to cross in front of me when a man ran past my car. Because I was driving slowly I was able to stop in plenty of time. He stood staring at me for a moment before turning and dashing off. Normally I wouldn’t have wasted my time chasing him, but since he was buck-ass naked I figured I should bring him in.

I spun the wheel and turned down the alley he had fled into. Since it had a dead end, he couldn’t have gone far. I didn’t spot him right off the bat so I assumed he was doing his best to hide. I put the car into park, kept the lights on and stepped out.

“You might as well come out,” I hollered. “It’ll be a lot better for you if I don’t have to come in after you.”

“Okay, okay.”

I turned my flashlight to where the voice had come from behind two trash cans and the nude dude stepped out, his arms raised. I didn’t recognize him, which was odd since I knew most people in town. He was approximately twenty-five years old, six foot tall, one-hundred-eighty pounds. Muscular.

Shining the beam at his face, I asked, “Care to explain this to me?”

He chuckled nervously. “You’re not gonna believe me.”

“Try me.”

“I was hooking up with this really hot chick and her husband showed up. Had to climb out the window.”

I sighed. “Was her name Connie?”

“Yeah. How did you know that?”

“Let’s just say you’re not the first man Harry’s caught her with. She does it make him jealous.”

He rubbed his face then quickly put his arm back up. “Christ, I’m a dumbass.”

About HARD TO BE GOOD:

Hard Ink Tattoo owner Jeremy Rixey has taken on his brother’s stateside fight against the forces that nearly killed Nick and his Special Forces team a year before. Now, Jeremy’s whole world has been turned upside down—not the least of which by a brilliant, quiet blond man who tempts Jeremy to settle down for the first time ever.

Recent kidnapping victim Charlie Merritt has always been better with computers than people, so when he’s drawn into the SF team’s investigation of his army colonel father’s corruption, he’s surprised to find acceptance and friendship—especially since his father never accepted who Charlie was. Even more surprising is the heated tension Charlie feels with sexy, tattooed Jeremy, Charlie’s opposite in almost every way.

With tragedy and chaos all around them, temptation flashes hot, and Jeremy and Charlie can’t help but wonder why they’re trying so hard to be good…

Shirtless muscular attractive young man model wearing sweatpants

EXCERPT:

“You should be inside celebrating,” Jeremy said, his voice a raw scrape. “You and Marz did an amazing thing this morning.” An hour ago, Marz and Charlie had cracked open a heavily encrypted microchip that contained a wealth of information that not only seemed likely to help the team clear its name, but proved that Charlie’s father hadn’t been dirty, like they’d all thought. “And I’m so happy for you about your dad.”

A wounded darkness passed through Charlie’s gaze, but he finally nodded. “Didn’t feel right without you there.” Pink filtered into his cheeks, and damn if that wasn’t as cute as it was sexy. Jeremy wasn’t sure anything had ever made him blush.

“I’m just not—” Jeremy shrugged and looked down at Charlie’s chest again. Having seen the guy dress more than once, he knew that shirt covered lean muscle that ran from strong shoulders down to his narrow hips. Jeremy fisted his hands against the urge to burrow them under the hem of the tee. After weeks of looking, and wanting, he was dying to touch. Jeremy found Charlie hard to read though, and hadn’t wanted to do anything to scare him off. “—very good company right now. I’m sorry if that—”

Charlie nudged Jeremy’s chin up with his hand, his fingers just barely touching Jer’s stubble-covered skin. But then his thumb landed softly against his lips.

Jeremy’s heartbeat kicked up and his lips fell open. Slowly, oh so tentatively, Charlie stroked the soft pad of his thumb back and forth across them.

“Charlie,” Jeremy whispered as arousal surged through his body, spiking his pulse, tensing his muscles, hardening his dick.

Uncertainty poured off Charlie as the man’s hand trembled where it touched him, but those blue eyes absolutely blazed desire. No way was Jeremy imagining that.

“You’re always good company, to me,” Charlie said in a low voice, his gaze dropping to Jeremy’s lips. Charlie leaned in closer, and closer still, and Jeremy could hardly believe the other man was the one to initiate this. But he was fucking thrilled.

Jeremy swallowed, his lips anticipating that first soft brush. Charlie was so close his shaky breath caressed Jeremy’s lips. His pace was maddening but so damn sexy Jer could barely breathe. And then Charlie’s eyelids fluttered closed and he was right there…

Last Marine Standing

(Heroes #2)

by

RJ Scott

Blurb…

When the people you trusted turn on you, when you are the last one standing, should you take your secrets to the grave? Or make the murderers pay?

Former Marine Recon, Mackenzie ‘Mac’ Jackson has secrets. The things he did for his country, the things he saw, must never be spoken about. Until that is, his team is targeted.

A shift in political alliances means one particular mission undertaken by Mac and his Fire Team needs to be wiped from the history books. Starting with the team itself.

Forest Ranger, Samuel Larson III wants to find the Marines who saved his life. He just wants to say thank you. What he can’t know is that he’s walking into a firestorm of betrayal and murder.

When Samuel arrives at Mac’s place he throws Mac’s plans for hiding out of the window. Abruptly Mac has to protect a man that threatens his heart, only this time he can’t be sure he will succeed in keeping Sam alive.

Excerpt…

Mac pushed open the kid’s door. The first thing Mac noticed as he shut the door behind him was how cold it was in the room. The window overlooking the parking lot wide open. The second was that Sam was leaning out of the window, too far over, the pivot of the balance on his tummy on the sill. A lift of his bare feet and the kid would topple out of the window. Mac saw a thin trail of blood from the bed to the window—Sam had pulled out his IV. Trying not to spook him, Mac moved to stand close enough to Sam to be able to grab him if he did anything stupid.

Sam’s shoulders stiffened, but he didn’t look at Mac.

“Go away,” he said softly. There was no emotion in the words. They were flat, not grieving, not angry, not hyper. Just nothing.

“What are you doing over here?” Mac asked conversationally. He moved a little closer to peer out the window. They were five floors up, plenty enough height to get Sam killed on the concrete. How was it even possible that the window was open this wide? Surely, even in private rooms like this one, the hospital would cover themselves against jumpers? Then he noticed the shards of a plastic knife, probably left over from dinner, and the screws on the floor. There was intent in the knife and the screws and the open window. Sam was pale, near white, and covered in bandages, his left ankle in a cast, and his breathing labored.

“You wanna talk?” Mac began.

Sam didn’t move to look at him. “Nooo,” he slurred from what Mac assumed was a combination of pain and the meds he was using to control it.

“I think you should.”

“Leave me alone.” Sam’s face flushed scarlet against the white as he spoke, but he still refused to look at Mac.

Guest Post: Anne Barwell

Today we are lucky to welcome Anne Barwell for a visit!

Location, Location

Thanks, Nic, for hosting me today 🙂

My upcoming release, Winter Duet, can be described in part as a road trip across Germany.  However, it’s not your usual road trip story as it takes place in 1944 during WW2, so the Gestapo are in pursuit, and bombs are falling.

While the first book in the Echoes series, Shadowboxing, took place in Berlin, I knew the second would have to take place across a much wider range of locations.  Getting out of Germany would be dangerous, especially for wanted men in a time where everyone had to carry identification papers.  They’d have to get from Berlin to one of Germany’s borders in order to escape the country.  Not only that, but I’d need to plot the route they would take before I started writing as the locations—and what was happening there at that time—would impact the details of the story very heavily.  Given the fact that Kristopher and Michel are separated after finding Leo, the downed RAF pilot, it wasn’t just a case of working out one route, but two.

Choosing the locations used in the story took a lot of research especially as the story is set when the Allies were bombing Germany. Did I want my characters to escape most of it and take a safe route skirting around the affected areas, or be caught in the thick of it?

I’ve been extremely lucky in writing this series that one of my betas—and a very good friend—is German.  She loaned me a topographical wall map of Germany which hung from one of my bookshelves while I was writing.  It made it so much easier to work out where all the locations were in association with each other, and what the terrain was like.  She’d also been to several of the locations and travelled some of these roads although we had to adjust the time it would take to make the journey to take into account this was taking place seventy years ago.  Google maps is very helpful in plotting routes especially with its information on how long it would take to get from one location to another, depending on mode of transport.

Further research led to several sites which provided details of The Big Week, which refers to concentrated bombing of Germany by the Allies during February 1944.  Everything fell into place nicely as this was not only the time of year my characters would be taking their road trip, but it was along the route they’d need to travel on their way to Switzerland and safety.  One good thing about writing in a time period where a lot was happening is that it is well documented. I found information about when and where the bombs fell, what type of aircraft was doing the bombing, and personal accounts about what it was like to live through it.

Various other resources—a mix of books and internet—filled in the gaps about the locations I used in the story.  The internet is great for finding out information about specific towns and areas, and the library had some wonderful guide books full of photographs.  I also read personal accounts from people on both sides who had lived through it. One of the reasons I love history is the human side of it. To me, that’s far more interesting than facts and figures. The more I researched, the more the plot I already grew to encompass both the locations, and historical events, bringing with them more complications for Kristopher, Michel and the rest of the Allied Team.

As to my earlier question about whether they should travel through the locations as they were bombed, or skirt around them and keep safe? I’ve always made my characters earn their happy endings. Why should this story be any different?

Echoes book 2 – Sequel to Shadowboxing

Germany 1944

With Kristopher finally fit enough to travel, he and Michel leave the security of their safe house and continue their journey across Germany toward Switzerland. Caught in a series of Allied bombings, they stop to help civilians and narrowly escape capture by German forces.

While investigating a downed aircraft in the Black Forest, the two men discover an injured RAF pilot.  After they are separated, Kristopher and the pilot are discovered by a German officer who claims he is not who he appears to be. Determined to find Michel again, Kristopher has to trust the stranger and hope he is not connected to those searching for him and the information he carries. Meanwhile Michel is intercepted by one of the Allied soldiers he met in Berlin. His help is needed to save one of their own.

Time quickly runs out. Loyalties are tested and betrayed as the Gestapo closes in. Michel can only hope that they can reach safety before information is revealed that could compromise not only his and Kristopher’s lives, but those of the remaining members of their team—if it is not already too late.

Excerpt:

Kristopher dropped to his knees and examined the boy. His eyes were glazed over, and he flinched when Kristopher touched him. “He must have hit his head when he fell,” Kristopher said. He brought his hand away from the boy’s temple. It was covered in blood. “He needs help, but I can’t do much for him here, just try and stop the bleeding.” He quickly opened his satchel and pulled out a short length of bandage, bundled it into a wad, and held it against the wound. It probably wouldn’t be enough to stop it, but it was better than doing nothing. Head wounds tended to bleed, didn’t they? It didn’t mean it was something serious, but it could be.

He let out a quick breath. Damn it. He wished he’d paid more attention when he’d watched Clara at work. Why had he agreed to disguise himself a medic? In this situation when that was exactly what was needed, he was next to useless.

“We can’t stay here,” Michel said. “Can you tie something around the bandage so it keeps the pressure on it when we move him?”

“Keep pressure on the wound while I look.” Kristopher searched around in his bag, ripped some more of the bandaging material, and tied it quickly. His hands were shaking, but at least there didn’t seem to be any blood seeping through the original cloth he’d put over the wound. “I think that should hold it for now.”

Michel handed Kristopher the flashlight and then lifted the boy into his arms. “What’s your name?” he asked softly when the boy opened his eyes and looked up at him.

“Fritz,” the boy replied, his voice wavering. He put his arms around Michel’s neck and clung to him. Thankfully, he seemed more alert than he had a few moments before.

“Hello, Fritz. I’m Michel, and this is Paul,” Michel said. “We’re going to keep you safe, I promise.”

“You promise?” Fritz’s earlier confidence was gone. “I didn’t think it was so dark. I know this place. I shouldn’t have tripped.” He glared at the ground. “Stupid thing. Stupid stupid. Everything looks different.” He sniffled loudly and wiped one dirty hand over his face.

“Do you remember the way to the shelter, Fritz?” Kristopher asked. Michel was watching Fritz carefully, holding the boy close to him. His grip had tightened at the first sign of Fritz’s distress.

“I don’t need to put you down,” Michel reassured Fritz. “You can still guide us while I’m holding you.”

“I don’t want to walk.” Fritz bit his lip. He looked around and then pointed to a street to their left. “If we go down there it’s only about ten minutes away.”

They’d never reach the shelter in time before it closed.

“There isn’t one closer?” Michel asked.

“It’s the one I know about,” Fritz said, somewhat defensively. “Mutter told me if something happened I should go to it.”

“Where’s your mother now?” Kristopher asked. The light from the flashlight was dying quickly. They had to hurry.

“I don’t know. She went to get my baby sister, but she never came downstairs.” Fritz stuck his chin out. “I waited like she said, even when I heard the loud noises and people crying.”

“You live around here?” Kristopher hoped Fritz’s family had survived this. They’d have to try and reunite them or at least find someone who could look after him before they left Stuttgart.

Fritz nodded. Whatever his wound, it seemed as though it was definitely superficial or he wouldn’t be talking as much as he was. “I went looking for her, and I couldn’t find her.”

“You sound much better, Fritz. Do you think you could walk?” Michel asked.

“I don’t want to lose you and Paul too,” Fritz said. He let Michel put him down and then put one small hand into Michel’s.

“You won’t lose us,” Michel promised. “Keep holding my hand, and Paul will look after the flashlight. We can work together.”

“Michel’s very good at working together,” Kristopher told Fritz. He shone the flashlight around. The farther out into the street they got, the more rubble there was. It wasn’t safe to move too quickly, and at this speed they’d never reach the shelter before daylight. He glanced up at the sky. Most of the flashes of light now seemed to be focused toward the city center. “I’m wondering if it’s safer to stay here but get as far away from the buildings as we can and wait for daylight.”

“We don’t know how long this raid is going to last,” Michel said, “but we need to make a decision.” Something creaked and groaned to the side of them. “Move!” Michel yelled. He picked up Fritz and ran back the way they’d come. Kristopher didn’t stop to see what was going on behind him. He followed.

Moments later, more rubble hit the street where they’d just been standing. If they’d stayed there they would have been buried in it.

Kristopher shone the flashlight on it and shivered. “I think finding the shelter is the least of our problems,” he said. “We need to get out into the open. It’s not just more bombings that could kill us, but the buildings that are already damaged.”

“I know a place,” Fritz said after Michel put him down. “I’ll show you.” He took hold of Michel’s hand again. “You and Paul are soldiers.” He pointed to the Red Cross on Kristopher’s arm. “You’ll stay and help look after all the hurt people, won’t you? Vater is a soldier too. He’s fighting at the front. Mutter says he’s very brave.”

“Yes, we’ll stay and help,” Michel said before Kristopher could say anything. He squeezed Fritz’s hand. “We’ll also help you find your mother, or at least someone who can look after you.” He looked over at Kristopher and gave him a questioning look.

“Of course we will,” Kristopher said, wondering why Michel felt he’d even had to ask.

About the Author

Anne Barwell lives in Wellington, New Zealand.  She shares her home with two cats who are convinced that the house is run to suit them; this is an ongoing “discussion,” and to date it appears as though the cats may be winning.

In 2008 she completed her conjoint BA in English Literature and Music/Bachelor of Teaching. She has worked as a music teacher, a primary school teacher, and now works in a library. She is a member of the Upper Hutt Science Fiction Club and plays violin for Hutt Valley Orchestra.

She is an avid reader across a wide range of genres and a watcher of far too many TV series and movies, although it can be argued that there is no such thing as “too many.” These, of course, are best enjoyed with a decent cup of tea and further the continuing argument that the concept of “spare time” is really just a myth.

Active Duty Anthology – Gay Military Erotic Romance

Active DutyActive Duty

Gay Military Erotic Romance

Edited by Neil Plakcy

This is a collection of military themed gay romance.

Soldiers in Love

In this fierce collection, Neil Plakcy brings us heart-pounding stories of men who put their lives on the line for love and duty. The heat of battle only amps up the level of excitement for soldiers who know that any tryst might be their last. A breakup note sent to the front line opens doors to new love in Jay Starre’s “Letter from Home.” In Logan Zachary’s “Ready Reserve,” a summer fling between two buddies with benefits becomes something more. Dirk Strong’s “Marine Guard” follows an embassy officer sent to Italy for work who ends up enjoying a romantic Roman holiday. These heroic hunks fight for love and honor—and their hearts and hard muscles will have you begging for your next debriefing!

An excerpt…

Active Duty exclusive excerpt

From ‘Liberty’ by Dominic Santi

Two days later, we were at the clinic. The surrogacy donation rooms were homey—large, comfortable beds with lots of pillows, soft lighting and a state of the art sound system for the classical background music we’d chosen. All of which belied the medical precision of what we were doing. The surrogacy programs weren’t hit or miss anymore. By the time Eric and I were back on Earth again, the first of our children would be ready to be born.

“Looks like the two of you will be mixing some primo genes.” The smirking, dark-haired technician was the type of sculpted eye-candy clinics employed to stimulate those who needed a kick start beyond the stacks of porn and sex toys on the nightstand. Eric and I stripped naked under his watchful and obviously interested eyes. Once we’d cleaned up and disinfected, the tech showed us how to use the collection sheaths, rolling one of the thin, transparent polyskins over a dildo and securing the sealant into place.

“Be sure it’s tight,” he said, running his finger around the edge to be sure there were no leaks. “You need to capture as much as possible of your preseminal fluid as well as your ejaculate. And don’t be surprised when the lube inside turns white. It’s a nutrient preservative to keep your sperm healthy. It’ll feel cool at first, but it will warm to body temperature as soon as it starts reacting to your fluids.”

After a couple of practice runs with the dildo, he seemed convinced we knew how to use the sheaths properly. With one final, lecherous grin toward our crotches, he gathered up his clipboard. “Remember, DO NOT mix up your donations. I’ll be at the desk down the hall. Press the buzzer over the bed when you’re done.” He closed the door behind himself, and Eric and I were alone.

“I can’t believe we’re here,” Eric said, laughing as he pulled me to him in a tight bear hug. “Jeez, I love you. And I’m so fucking horny. Let’s make us some babies.”

I was so nervous my dick couldn’t decide if it wanted to get hard or shrivel up, so I stretched out on the bed and held my arms out to him. Though the clinic recommended we use dildos to stimulate our prostate glands, we were going to do things the old-fashioned way—by fucking each other. We’d decided I’d go first, because after a few days of deprivation, I can almost always get it up a second time, no matter how hard I shoot the first. Eric had the staying power to fuck me into shooting while holding back long enough for me to do the same for him. And we were going to do it face-to-face, so we could kiss and hug—and watch each other come.

My thoughts?

This collection of stories starts at the more ‘erotica’ end of the scale with the more romantic elements coming into the stories from the second third of the book, or at least it seemed that way to me. That’s not to say that there aren’t emotions and love involved in the other stories, they are just more sexually focused. And the stories I felt were more romantic had a good dose of sex in them too! 🙂

Knowing I was reading gay erotica, I expected the raw and gritty sex that is portrayed. Most of the stories don’t pull any punches. This is sex that is no holds barred, down and dirty. To be honest I don’t find a lot of the terms used to be my taste–I won’t go into it here as I am sure most of you are familiar with the type of language to which I refer– but the mix of coarse sex and caring was fascinating.

These stories cover men on the front-line, men deployed to fight for their country. There are men on leave, men in training. The stories range from sex for sex’s sake, insta-love, fun impromptu sex, menage, quick and dirty fucks to marriage proposals. Most of the stories are set in current time (at least I think they are) with a notable exception. Liberty (the story from the excerpt above) is set in a world where surrogacy seems the norm. I was amazed to see an erotic sex scene while collecting semen for artificial insemination–very different! My favourite stories were those that had a little more story such as Neil Plakcy’s own story “A Voice In The Dark” about two men coming together after being captured by the enemy and escaping.

This isn’t traditional m/m romance but that’s not what you expect when you read this type of anthology.  As the blurb says, “in this fierce collection, Neil Plakcy brings us heart-pounding stories of men who put their lives on the line for love and duty.” Expect to read of military men dealing with sex and love in many different situations, that provides a view of  the changes since Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell was repealed.
