Gay romance novel recommendations

I feel like I’ve hardly read anything over the last month or two. I’ve had surgery on my neck and it’s amazing how difficult holding a book is when you’re wearing a hard collar neck brace! I also didn’t get to listen to much in the way of audio books, instead spending most of my time sleeping or staring mindlessly at the TV.

Finders Keepers by N.R. Walker

N.R. Walker writes some wonderful books. Finders Keepers was sweet and fun. It’s the perfect book if you’re looking for an easy to read, low angst story. I also have a soft spot because it’s set in Australia. It’s also on Kindle Unlimited if you subscribe. Click here to find out more.

The Sinner and the Saint by RJ Scott

This is the 8th book in the Ellery Mountain series. There’s something nice and comforting about reading series like this – when each book comes out it’s like visiting a familiar town and spending time with old friends. There’s something reassuring about knowing what to expect while spending time with new characters falling in love. Click here for more.

Love in Spades by Charlie Cochet

This book starts a new series, Four Kings Security. This was an action romance with the main characters finding love while fighting the bad guys – a bit of mystery, a touch of action and a lot of love. This is another KU book. Click here for more.

Alpha Heat by Leta Blake

Continuing my commitment to branch out from purely contemporary romance, I read this paranormal romance. This is the second book in the series (Heat of Love) so I recommend reading book 1 first. I like the world building and the fact this is a relationship that is forbidden. Click here.

If you’ve got an recommendations for books for me to check out, comment below. I’m always after new recommendations.

Happy reading,

UNIQUE EXCERPT: Red Dirt Christmas by N.R. Walker

Christmas backgrounds. Christmas decor on the white wooden background.

Blurb

Travis had been here for just over a year. We were technically engaged, not that we’d told anyone. He was happy just knowin’ I’d said yes, and I had some head-clearin’ stuff to work through. Knowing I was good enough for Trav was one thing, but knowing if I was good enough to be a husband and father was somethin’ else entirely.

Life at Sutton Station had never been better. Business was strong, Trudy and Bacon’s little baby, Gracie, was a few weeks old now and as cute as a button, Ma’s health was good, and my relationship with Laura and Sam was in a pretty good place. And Travis? Well, life with him was still all kinds of perfect.

But, to Travis’s dismay, Christmas at the Station was just another day. Another day of getting up before the sun, feeding animals, fixin’ what needed fixin’, and checking water troughs all while tryin’ to keep out of the blistering heat.

And this year weren’t much different. Only that it was Travis’s first Sutton Station Christmas. The fact we didn’t go all out with decorations and celebrations baffled him, and if I was bein’ truthful, it disappointed him too.

Which was why I had to make it a special kind of Christmas…

Excerpt

The next day, the day before Christmas Eve, Trav was to head out with Billy into the Western paddock, checkin’ cattle, fences, and water troughs. They left long before sunup to beat the heat of the day, and it gave me plenty of time to make last-minute emails and phone calls to make sure everything was going to plan.

It was weird to be excited about Christmas.

Part of me wished real hard that it wasn’t a surprise. I wanted to share this part with Travis. This excitement, the build-up. But part of me couldn’t wait to see his face on Christmas morning.

So I set about gettin’ some office work done until Ma called us for lunch. Travis and Billy weren’t back yet—that weren’t too surprising—and they radioed in to say they were two hours away. So we kept some lunch aside for them and kept on about our day. The general rule of the Outback summer was to work early and late, taking the hottest few hours of the day off. Usually stayin’ indoors outta the sun was the best way to spend it, though I normally found myself in the office getting paperwork done.

I smiled to myself when I heard the old Cruiser come into the yard. It was always a relief to know when people were back, but knowin’ Trav was somewhere close was a comfort I couldn’t explain.

The screen door banged and there was a sound of boots on the floorboards. Ma responded with, “Lunch is on the table.”

Though I was a little disappointed Trav didn’t stick his head around the door, I heard the quiet murmur of voices and the clanging of cutlery in the dining room, and figurin’ they’d be starving hungry, I didn’t want to bother them while they ate. But when they were done, it wasn’t Travis who came to see me. It was Billy.

“Hey, boss,” he said, looking a little unsure. “He didn’t want me to say nothin’, but Mr Travis ain’t feelin’ too good.”

I got to my feet. “Where is he?”

“Don’t think he’s moved from the dining table, boss.”

That was exactly where I found him. He had his head in his hands, his plate of half-eaten lunch still in front of him. He looked up at me and I could see then he weren’t his usual colour. He frowned. “Billy told ya, didn’t he?”

“Yes, thankfully,” I said walking over to him. “Trav, you look like shit.”

“Gee, thanks.”

I put my hand on his shoulder and he was hot to the touch. Too hot. I put my hand on his chest, then on his forehead and on the top of his head. He was cooked. “Ma!”

It must have been my tone, because not a moment later, Ma appeared in the doorway. “What’s wrong?”

Just then, Trav’s head kind of lolled back and he almost fell of the chair before I grabbed him. “I think Trav’s heat-struck.”

Travis chuckled and nodded toward the lounge room. “I finished the tree,” he said and disappeared through the open doorway. I followed him to find the pine tree he’d brought in earlier now covered in tinsel, ornaments, and baubles. “I know you think the whole Christmas thing is kinda silly, but—”

“I love it,” I said. “The tree. I mean, I love what you’ve done to it.”

“I didn’t have much to work with,” he said. The corner of his mouth pulled down in a frown. “And it was all pretty old. I hung up all the things you made as a kid. I just wanted to do something.” He shrugged again. “I mean, it’s Christmas.”

“Trav.”

“And I know you guys aren’t big on the whole festive thing out here,” he said. “But I just thought it’d be nice, ya know? It’s Gracie’s first Christmas. Granted, she’s only four weeks old but that’s not the point.”

“Trav.”

“It’s about building memories, Charlie,” he said softly. “Family memories. Not just with everyone here, but our family. Ours start now. This is our first real Christmas too and I just thought it might be nice if you, you know, thought it was special too.”

GUEST POST & GIVEAWAY: Exchange of Hearts by N.R. Walker

Promo 2

Exchange of Hearts

In Exchange of Hearts, Harrison and Levi venture out of their dorm room and travel to the Blue Mountains. Harrison’s family have a weekender there, and by some stroke of luck after Harrison’s parents must return to the city, the boys are left alone for an entire weekend.

I can picture the house, the farm, and the undulating hills, because I used to spend weekends there myself.

A lifetime ago, when I lived in Sydney, I dated a guy whose family had a weekender on a farm in Little Hartley, a small town in the Blue Mountains. We spent a few weekends there, and it was this place I imagined Harrison and Levi spent their memorable weekend together. The farm was a few hundred acres, there were horses and motorbikes, and it reminded me a great deal of the house I grew up in.

It had been years since I’d thought about that place and the memories there, and it was so nice to revisit. I love it when reading a book can snag an old memory, but I love it even more when writing a book does.

The Blue Mountains are a remarkable part of Australia. Not that the boys see much of it 😉 But the area, about two hours from Sydney, is a landmark of natural and cultural significance, and is one of Australia’s most popular tourist destinations.

Blurb

Eighteen-year-old Harrison Haddon has grown up alone. Surrounded by wealth, nannies, and material things, all he craves is the approval of his father. Sent away to the boarding school his father and grandfather attended, it’s assumed he will follow in their footsteps from Sydney’s prestigious Ivy League school straight into medical school.

But Harrison doesn’t want to be a doctor.

He dreams of music and classical piano. His only true happiness, his escape from the world expected of him, is dismissed by his intolerant and emotionally detached parents.

Levi Aston arrives from London for a three-month student exchange program. Free-spirited and confident in who he is and what he wants to do with his life, Levi convinces Harrison not give up on his dreams.

But convincing Harrison not to give up on his family might not be so easy.

SYDNEY

CHAPTER ONE

I walked side by side with the blonde, well-dressed woman and ignored the looks and laughter from the other guys.

Along with our student advisor, Miss Goff, I’d been relegated as the welcoming committee to the new kid. As part of a student exchange program, a kid from England was joining the ever-so-prestigious St. Michael’s Boarding School for three months.

So, why me? Why did I get picked to go?

Because he was going to be my roommate. That was why.

As we got to the car, Miss Goff stopped. “Oh, I just remembered I left the file in my office. I’ll be right back, Harrison,” she told me. “Wait here. I won’t be a minute.”

As she turned and walked briskly back toward the building, I leaned against the car, knowing the other kids would soon start with the slurs and teasing. I looked up, and of course it was him I saw.

“Have fun with Miss Goff,” Carson taunted me suggestively. The other boys laughed. His personal entourage, of course they laughed. They were all rugby players, and I was the music nerd. Tall and thin, my dark hair made my skin look paler than it really was, with long piano-playing fingers, and I was usually alone—I was the opposite to their athletic builds and jock-pack mentality. Carson laughed the loudest. “No making out with the teacher at the airport, Haddon.”

I didn’t even bother with a comeback. Why fucking bother?

He knew damn well she wasn’t my type.

She. No, shes were not my type at all.

He knew this. He knew it damn fucking well. Because he and I had fooled around together. On the quiet, of course. In the darkened privacy of his room, only when he was certain there was no one else around, when it suited him.

Just kissing mostly, rubbing, dry humping—whatever the fuck you wanted to call it.

Making out. First base. Whatever.

It was after our last encounter that things changed.

It was about two in the morning and we’d been making out in his bed. We were both so hard, and he was whining and moaning as we writhed against one another. So I slipped my hand under the waistband of his boxers, and I gave him a hand job.

Skin on skin.

I wrapped my hand around his dick, pumped and squeezed him, and not a moment later he came.

It was the fucking hottest thing. Ever.

But afterwards, when his mind had cleared of his jizz-high, he was… different. He pulled away from me and suggested coldly I go back to my room.

It was too real for him.

I figured he just needed a day or two and then things would go back to normal.

But they didn’t. They got worse.

The jokes, the taunting. It had been over three months now, and he still made fun of me. Although I could see it in his eyes, as he was saying hurtful things, his eyes were saying sorry.

And I couldn’t bring myself to say anything back. I just… couldn’t.

“You ready, Harrison?” Miss Goff’s voice startled me. She had a manila folder in her hand. “We’d better go if we’re going to be there when the plane arrives. We don’t want to be late.”

After we got into the car, she handed me the folder and then pulled out onto Ryde Road traffic, heading toward the city. I held the folder in my hands, not even bothering to open it. I couldn’t care fucking less about some foreign exchange student. If I had to put up with a roommate, I didn’t want to look at his face for any longer than necessary.

Miss Goff sensed my mood. “Don’t worry about those boys,” she told me. “People like Carson Sinclair aren’t worth your time.”

I snorted. If only she knew.

We drove for a few minutes in silence. Then she asked, “How’s the music coming along?”

We discussed my music for the rest of the drive. It was an easy subject for me, my love of piano, even though she knew I couldn’t make a career out of it. But thankfully before too much longer, we were walking into Sydney Airport’s International terminal.

I figured this kid would take a while to get through customs and there’d be some kind of paperwork to fill out—I was also guessing you couldn’t just walk into the airport and take some random kid. So presuming it was gonna take a while, I told Miss Goff, “I’m just going to grab a Coke. Can I get you anything?”

She was distracted enough, double-checking the board of flight numbers and arrival gates, and without looking at me, she shook her head. “No, thank you,” she said, before reminding me, like I was five years old and not eighteen, not to wander off, not to go too far, and to come straight back.

I grabbed a drink, and keeping an eye on Miss Goff every now and then, I browsed through magazine racks. There was nothing really worth looking at—a nice one with Hugh Jackman on the cover, but I noticed two guys near the wall looking at a map. Obviously backpackers or hikers or something. They were dressed in cargos and T-shirts, hiking shoes; young, fit, healthy.

Hot.

I picked up a magazine and pretended to read it, but really I was just checking the two guys out. I didn’t often get the opportunity to perv on guys, so I took my time.

Only they caught me staring, smiled politely and moved on. They walked past some other guy who seemed to have been watching me watching them, because he was trying not to laugh.

He was cute too; tall as me, blond-brown messy hair, blue eyes, pale skin, and his pink lips gave him a nice smile. He looked fit but not like the football meatheads back at school.

I wasn’t embarrassed to have been caught looking—even in full school uniform, no one here knew me, and Miss Goff was nowhere in sight. So I decided to play it up. I looked him up and down, shrugged one shoulder, gave him one raised eyebrow and half a smirk.

He grinned, then turned his head quickly like someone called his name.

Exactly like someone called his name.

Like Miss Goff.

Fuck.

Oh, you have got to be fucking kidding me!

That was him?

My roommate for the next three months was the guy I just checked out?

I watched—like a slow motion car crash—as Miss Goff greeted him and offered to take his suitcase. She looked up, saw me, and called me over. His eyes followed hers, and when he saw it was me, his eyes widened, and he grinned like the Cheshire fucking cat.

I stuffed the magazine back in the rack and walked over, wishing the world would end in the next two seconds.

No such luck.

“Levi Aston?” Miss Goff said.

“Yes, Miss,” he said with a posh British accent and a smile.

She grinned. “We’d like to welcome you to Sydney, Australia. St. Michael’s is proud to have you,” she said. Then she looked at me, “This is Harrison Haddon. He’s a boarder. He’ll be your roommate and can show you around the school.”

Levi extended his hand and looked at me with a knowing smirk. “Hello, Harrison.”

Fuck. My. Life.

“Hello,” I said, shaking his hand for as long as was considered polite, then let it drop.

I was in such deep shit.

Cronin, a vampire Elder, has spent the last thousand years waiting for Alec. He’d been told his fated one would be a man wielding a shield, but he didn’t expect him to be human, and he certainly didn’t expect that shield to be a police badge.

Both men, strong-willed and stubborn, are still learning how to cope with the push and pull of being fated, when fate throws them another curveball.

Rumors have spread quickly of turmoil in Egypt. Covens are fleeing with news of a vampire who has a talent like no other, hell-bent on unleashing the wrath of Death.

Alec and Cronin are thrown into a world of weird Alec cannot imagine. What he learned in school of ancient pharaohs and Egyptian gods was far from the truth. Instead, he finds out firsthand that history isn’t always what it seems.

Alec patted his belly, which was now full of pizza and coffee. Then he thought of something. “When was the last time you fed?”

“Two days ago.”

“Is that too long?”

“I will need to feed soon, but it’s bearable.”

“What is not bearable?” Alec asked. “I’m just curious. I guess I should know these things. I mean, is it uncomfortable for you to be near me right now?”

“Of course not.”

“Is it a hunger, or a thirst? Does your throat burn until you feed, or what?” Alec asked out of pure curiosity.

“It is a hunger,” Cronin answered. “Though not like a human hunger. It affects the whole body, not just the stomach. The whole body craves it.”

Alec considered this. “I can see that, I guess.”

Cronin gave a smile. “You talk of such matter with ease. Does it not bother you?”

“Not as much as I thought it would,” Alec said. “I try not to think about the human loss of it, to be honest. Kinda like how I try not to think about the pigs that die to give us the amazing thing that is bacon.” Alec stared out the kitchen window for a while, looking over the city as he thought about what he just said. “I’m not sure when I stopped caring for human life… I’m a cop, I shouldn’t…” he shook his head. “I don’t know when that changed.”

“When you changed,” Cronin said softly. “When you met me.”

“I changed when I met you?”

Cronin nodded. “As I did when I met you.”

Oh. Alec paused. “Is that part of the fated thing? We change?”

“Yes. Fundamental changes to our psyche, to adapt to the needs of our significant other.”

“But I’m still me,” Alec said quietly.

Cronin gave him a small smile. “You will always be you. You just adopt certain tolerances.”

“So, normally if something pissed me off with someone, like something they did—like snoring! If they snored—I ‘d hate it, but if you snored, I wouldn’t care.”

“I don’t snore.”

“That wasn’t my point.”

Cronin chuckled. “Your point was correct, yes.”

“So what pisses you off in other people, but not in me?”

Cronin thought for a moment. “I don’t like being interrupted when I’m talking. It is frustrat-”

“Like that?” Alec said with a smile. “Like me interrupting you like that?”

Cronin huffed. “Yes, like that.”

Alec snorted. “But it still annoyed you.”

“It’s a work in progress.” Cronin let out a half-laugh, half-sigh. “It frustrates me far less with you than someone else, believe me.”

“Then I shall try my very hardest not to interrupt you ever again,” Alec said, with a smirk and flick of his eyebrow which meant he shall try his very hardest to interrupt Cronin every chance he got.

Cronin sighed. “I also find sarcasm rather tiresome.”

“Excellent.” Alec laughed and finished his breakfast and made himself another coffee.

Alec leaned against the kitchen counter with his second cup of coffee in his hand, and it was as though Cronin was waiting for him. He cleared his throat. “So, given the events of yesterday, I wondered whether you wished to continue our date? Considering it was cut short.”

Alec hid his slow-spreading smile behind his coffee cup. “I would love to, but I thought research might be in order, given the events of yesterday.”

“Research of what?”

Alec was stunned. Research of what? “Uh, everything we learned yesterday, none of which makes sense.”

“Jodis and Eiji are seeking out information as we speak.”

“I thought you said they were eating out?”

Cronin smiled. “They are doing both. They’ve gone to Egypt-”

“They’ve what?” Alec cried, interrupting him. “By themselves?”

“They’re safe,” Cronin told him. “They’re verifying the information Bes gave us yesterday. Though we’ve no reason to doubt him, I wanted to be sure.”

“You asked them to go?”

“Yes. I took them.”

“You what?”

“I was only gone for one second. The apartment is well alarmed, and you were sound asleep.”

Alec put his cup down and ran his hands through his hair. “And?”

“And they are searching out any other information we might use.”

Alec sighed. “And what about me?”

Cronin blinked. “I don’t know what you mean. What about you?”

Alec took a deep breath and exhaled slowly. “I’m a detective. Figuring shit out is what I do. I research, I study, I figure shit out.”

“Alec, I cannot risk you being out there. Please understand, it’s not my wish to see you confined here, but until this risk is over-”

“I don’t need to leave here,” Alec replied. “As much as I’d like to.” He rolled his eyes. “But we have this thing now called the internet. I mean, it is only recent in your perspective of timelines, and I know you think Shakespeare is still classed as popular culture, but it is the twenty-first century.”

Cronin glared at him for just a moment. “I take back what I said before. I do believe that I detest sarcasm more than being interrupted.”

She loves writing and spends far too much time doing it, but wouldn’t have it any other way.

She is many things; a mother, a wife, a sister, a writer. She has pretty, pretty boys who live in her head, who don’t let her sleep at night unless she gives them life with words.

She likes it when they do dirty, dirty things…but likes it even more when they fall in love.

She used to think having people in her head talking to her was weird, until one day she happened across other writers who told her it was normal.

She’s been writing ever since…

Red Dirt Heart #3

by

N.r. Walker

The blurb:

Life for Charlie Sutton has never been better, or busier. With Travis now a permanent fixture of Sutton Station, a permanent fixture at Charlie’s side, Charlie’s convinced he couldn’t do anything on his ever-growing to-do list without him.

He can run a multimillion dollar cattle business, finish his degree, try and further the local beef industry, deal with staff issues, Ma’s failing health, and an attention-demanding wombat. He can even deal with an unexpected visitor and some shattering news.

He can deal with it all, as long as he has Travis.

But what happens when he doesn’t?

Red Dirt Heart 3 is the story of Charlie Sutton finally realising he can be the man Travis Craig deserves, even if he doesn’t have Travis. It’s a story of love, family, holding on, letting go and coming home.

The Interview:

Why did you choose one of the most remote places to set this series?

I just had the idea of writing about Anna Creek Station (Australia’s largest cattle station – if not the world’s) but obviously couldn’t use the actual name Anna Creek. I did base Sutton Station from a real station in the NT but only on location. It is purely fictional. The remoteness and sheer size of such a place is mind boggling and the fact men and women thrive out there is equally so.

What was your inspiration for the setting of RDH – I mean, it’s in the middle of nowhere?

As I mentioned above, the location was based off an actual working station. Yes, there is a working farm that is literally three hours from town, in the middle of nowhere.
You can see it here
Please zoom in (as close as 200m) and you can see the homestead and sheds etc. You can also see I have never exaggerated about the vast red dirt. LOL

How did you discover MM?

It’s no secret that I fell into MM through the fanfiction door. I had read/written Twilight fanfiction (amongst others) and found what is known as “slash” in the fanfic world, but what we call MM. Then there was a natural progression from fanfic to original fiction.
I do believe fanfic helped me become a better writer, or in essence, taught me about writing. There is an instant gratification in writing fanfiction – an immediate response from readers – that is instrumental in learning. I would suggest to anyone who is considering dipping their toes into the writing world, write fanfiction first.

What was the first MM book you read? Any recommendations?

My very first MM original fictions I read were More and Breathe by Sloan Parker. Needless to say I was hooked on the genre 🙂
I’ve recently found the Widdershins series by Jordan L Hawk and have devoured them. They’re historical paranormal, so really, what’s not to love?

If you could have lunch with anyone – living or dead – who would it be and why?

Can I have fictional people? This is rather self-serving, but at my table, there would be:
Matt and Kira from my Turning Point series
Tom and Cooper from my Thomas Elkin series
Carter, Isaac, Will and Mark from my Blind Faith series
And of course, Charlie and Travis from my Red Dirt Heart series
Oh, and Mark’s mother from Blindside – just for laughs 🙂
To imagine these guys all sitting around one table and having a laugh…

The Review:

Okay, so by now, most of you know how hard I fangirl Ms Walker. But with RDH #3, she’s outdone herself. Seriously.  I have never laughed so hard or cried so much whilst reading a book.  I think I’ve just taken the Walker Stalker status up a notch.

Travis and Charlie are just the best couple, and this is now my favourite read, ever.  I loved Trav with his foot holdin’ and nose nudgin’. Charlie was just as stubborn as ever, but he’s mellowed – a little anyway. These guys together will rock all your romantic and smexy bones, until you’re a big puddle of goo.

Poor Charlie had so much thrown at him, it was one thing after another, and I was a little worried about his mental health. And just when it all settles… BOOM!  Ms Walker just about kills me with all the feels.  Even my feels had feels, and my hubby was giving weird looks. Charlie kinda grew into himself here. He realised he can still be Charlie, without Travis. He can stand on his own, deal with anything that’s thrown at him, and still run the farm to the level expected of ‘Charles Sutton.’  But just because he can do it without Trav, doesn’t mean he wants to.  I loved Charlie here, but there was a moment where I wasn’t sure what was going on with Travis and I was scared that I wasn’t going to like him.

But really, I should’ve known better.  This is Walker at her finest, she wouldn’t do that us, her loyal readers. Yes, she’ll break your heart, like she’s done in nearly every book she’s written, but it will be expertly put back together. I feel like I can breathe again now I’ve finished reading it.

Keep your eyes our for Red Dirt Heart #4.  It promises to be a doozy as well.

5 stars

Hope you enjoy – Robyn x

Excerpt:

We climbed into the ute and Travis drove, only mumbling under his breath once or twice about what side of the road he was on. I thought we were headed to find something to eat, but he pulled up at a pet store.

“What are we doing?”

“You’ll see,” was all he said as he was getting out.

I followed him into the pet shop, past the puppies, fish and birds down to the kennels and produce. When he stopped at cat beds, I shook my head. “Oh, no no no. We’re not getting a cat. We used to have one, it lived in the shed and the bloody thing was feral.”

He didn’t even look at me. “It’s not for a cat, Charlie.” He picked up a cushion-box looking thing with a hole in the front. The label called it a cat igloo. “It’s for your damn wombat.”

“Oh,” I said brightly. “Well, that’s okay then.”

He pushed Nugget’s new bed into my chest. “So he sleeps in his bed, not ours.”

A sales guy, about eighteen years old, walked up and was looking at us funny. He probably just heard what Travis said, and I didn’t care. I just shrugged, guessin’ that I’d come a long way in the last six months. “How did I know he’d think it was playtime?”

Travis sighed and turned to the sales assistant. “Do you have any feed pellets for wombats?”

He raised his eyebrows. “Wombats?”

I nodded. “Yep, you know, ‘bout this big,” I held up my hands to show him, “shape of a brick, cute little thing.”

Travis took a god-fucking-help-me breath. “About a year old, pain in the arse, stubborn as hell, boot-chewin’, gets into everything type of wombat.”
