One More Time

Ethan Stone

“Yes, ma’am, I understand you’re not very happy with your husband, but that doesn’t mean you can attack him with a weasel.”

The couple had fought over which TV show to watch. Even though Mr. Palmer had acquiesced and let her watch Real Housewives of Washington D.C. Mrs. Palmer hadn’t liked the fact he had argued with her so when he’d gone to bed she’d tossed an angry ferret under the covers. Mr. Palmer had been bitten a couple times but there had been no major damage.

It was just another night as a cop in small town of Lovelock, Nevada. We never had anything exciting here. Mainly domestic disturbances like the Palmers. Some police offers would’ve preferred more action, but not me. I’d done four years in the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and had gotten tired of dealing with punk gangbangers shooting at me. The three years at Lovelock had been far less exciting but much better for my blood pressure.

After settling the disturbance at the Palmers’ I cruised down Main Street making sure the boarded up buildings hadn’t been broken into by bored teenagers. Thankfully we only had more active businesses than empty ones in town. Not that we were a bustling metropolis by any means. I’d just braked to allow mangy stray black dog to cross in front of me when a man ran past my car. Because I was driving slowly I was able to stop in plenty of time. He stood staring at me for a moment before turning and dashing off. Normally I wouldn’t have wasted my time chasing him, but since he was buck-ass naked I figured I should bring him in.

I spun the wheel and turned down the alley he had fled into. Since it had a dead end, he couldn’t have gone far. I didn’t spot him right off the bat so I assumed he was doing his best to hide. I put the car into park, kept the lights on and stepped out.

“You might as well come out,” I hollered. “It’ll be a lot better for you if I don’t have to come in after you.”

“Okay, okay.”

I turned my flashlight to where the voice had come from behind two trash cans and the nude dude stepped out, his arms raised. I didn’t recognize him, which was odd since I knew most people in town. He was approximately twenty-five years old, six foot tall, one-hundred-eighty pounds. Muscular.

Shining the beam at his face, I asked, “Care to explain this to me?”

He chuckled nervously. “You’re not gonna believe me.”

“Try me.”

“I was hooking up with this really hot chick and her husband showed up. Had to climb out the window.”

I sighed. “Was her name Connie?”

“Yeah. How did you know that?”

“Let’s just say you’re not the first man Harry’s caught her with. She does it make him jealous.”

He rubbed his face then quickly put his arm back up. “Christ, I’m a dumbass.”

BLOG TOUR, EXCERPT AND GIVEAWAY! Bonded 2 by Sara York

Title: Bonded 2
Series: Bound in Love #2
Author: Sara York
Genre: M/M Romance
Published: August 14, 2015

Liam Muller’s passion for life, mixed with his abusive past created more problems than Greg Peterson could handle on his own. When the pair meet Chris Edwards, everything changes. Both Greg and Chris keep Liam even, but when Liam’s parents plot his kidnapping, Chris and Greg can do nothing to keep him safe without the help of Chris’s new friend, Agent Samuel Graves.
Samuel is all about the job, but he craves a connection like Liam, Chris, and Greg have. When Sam meets Hudson Radcliff, he’s thrown off balance with attraction. His normally cool demeanor is set aflame with lust and need. Hudson and Sam burn for each other, but their passion is tested when everyone is put in danger.
Chris, and Greg fight Liam’s demons after they are reunited, but Liam’s parents won’t give up without a fight. Three men together may challenge people, but Liam, Chris, and Greg will fight to the end for their love.
Liam shook his head as he stared open mouthed at Agent Sam Graves. The agent nodded his head, so Liam looked to Greg then finally Chris.
“But I can’t.” He held out one hand to Greg then the other to Chris. “They’re both my husbands, and I can’t choose one.”
“I can understand how you feel, but your parents are fighting with everything they have. If they can get a judge to rule in their favor, you’ll be forced to undergo some sort of examination to determine your mental state. And trust me when I say they’ll probably pick a doctor who will find something wrong with your life. Few people understand what you, Greg, and Chris have. To make it worse, they’re also threatening legal action for your attack on your mom.”
“I didn’t attack her. She shoved me and then I reached out to keep from falling. I didn’t even really touch her. I might have brushed my arm against hers as I tried to keep from hitting the floor, but I didn’t do anything.”
“Marry either Greg or Chris and they’ll be your closest relative. Your parents will have no say in your life and no judge will force you to undergo a mental evaluation based on their insistence. If you have a spouse, then your spouse has the say in your life, not them. We could probably get through this without you getting married, but there is a slim chance your dad will use your past drug use against you and have a judge declare you mentally incompetent. It’s a long shot, but it will be impossible for them to have control if you have a spouse.”
“But I can’t be married to just one of them.” Liam felt like the world was closing in on him. How could he choose? Greg was the man who had saved him from himself, and Chris was his perfect lover. All three of them were intertwined so intricately that marrying one would be impossible.
“Liam,” Greg dropped to his knees in front of him, his beautiful brown eyes revealing his soul. “I love you more than life itself.”
He reached out and cupped Greg’s cheek. This man had made such a huge difference in his life. How could he say no to his proposal? His heart ached and he felt like it was breaking. He loved Greg, but he loved Chris too. How could he choose? But how could he say no to Greg?
“I love you so much, Greg.” Tears burned the back of his eyes, and he was powerless against whatever Greg wanted. Not because Greg lorded over him, but he loved the man so very much.
Greg licked his lips, and a smile played over his face. His eyes were bright, and Liam thought Greg looked better than ever before.
“I want you to marry Chris,” Greg said.
Liam pulled back, shocked by Greg’s words. “What?” He couldn’t have heard Greg right. Didn’t Greg want him?
Liam nodded and drew in a deep breath, watching the people move around him. People who looked to be medics took out the younger of the guys who’d been held here. The minutes ticked by, and he wanted to remind Sam he needed to see Greg and Chris, but every time he glanced to Sam, he held up his hand and nodded.

He was about out of all of his patience when the door to the facility opened and a new group of people walked in. The second man through the door was big, and it didn’t take him more than a second to realize it was Greg. He stood on shaky legs, tears streaming down his face. Greg was crying too and so was Chris.
“Greg.” Liam fell into open arms, trusting Greg would catch him. He wasn’t disappointed as Greg wrapped his arms around him and held him tight. He felt lips pressed against his face and neck, and then he felt more arms around him. Chris was beside them. His heart swelled so much, he wondered if his chest could contain it. He couldn’t stop the flow of tears as he held Greg. His men had saved him. They hadn’t forgotten about him.

“Okay, it’s time to head out.” Sam was standing right beside them, his gaze serious. “The locals have been alerted to what’s going on. We need the three of you to head to the airport. Greg and Chris, your bags are already in a car and on the way there. There is some grumbling from local law enforcement that they want to arrest Liam. We can’t let them get Liam back into their custody. Let’s move out, now.”
Liam held Greg’s hand and then reached out for Chris’s. All three of them settled in the backseat of the car Sam led them to, Liam in the middle, sandwiched between his lovers. Sam slid behind the wheel and another man sat in the passenger seat. Liam looked from Greg to Chris and back to Greg, his emotions rising to the surface again.

Chris placed his hand on Liam’s knee and squeezed. It felt amazing to be back with his men. There was so much to tell them, and yet he couldn’t say anything. He thought he’d be able to speak before they made it to the airport, but tension and fear held him in check. If the cops caught up to them, they might arrest him.

It took them more than thirty minutes to arrive. Once there, Sam led them into a small terminal.

“This isn’t the right place, is it?” Liam asked. “It was bigger when I flew in.”

“We’re flying private. You’ll be in Virginia in a couple of hours. Greg, Chris, your luggage is already stowed below. Liam, if we find anything that belongs to you, we’ll return it. I’ll be in contact with you in the next few days, and I’ll probably be sending a few photos of things we don’t have to hold and see if they’re yours. Some items may be used as evidence and you won’t get it back for a while.”

“Okay,” Liam whispered.
“Hey,” Sam held out his hand. “I swear you’ll be protected. I’ve discussed some options with Greg and Chris. When I fly home, I’ll meet with you and discuss those with you.”

He nodded as he shook Sam’s hand before moving next to Greg, seeking comfort. During takeoff, he had to be strapped into his own seat, but once they were flying, he unstrapped and crawled onto Greg’s lap. Chris moved to the seat he’d been occupying. He leaned forward and kissed Chris, tears forming in his eyes as he realized it all could have gone much worse. He was only at that shitty place for a little over a day. If he’d been there for weeks or longer, he knew he wouldn’t be the same person.
The kiss ended and he sat back, resting his head against Greg’s shoulder. Both Chris and Greg held him, giving him comfort. He fell asleep quickly and woke as they were starting their descent for landing.
“You have to strap in,” Greg said as he helped Liam move to the seat he’d been in earlier.
Liam found Chris in the row opposite them and reached over as Greg fastened his seatbelt. He held hands with Chris and Greg, not wanting to lose his connection with either one of them. The plane touched down and he let out a sigh. Now life could get back to normal, at least he hoped it could.

He is the author of Mahu, Mahu Surfer, Mahu Fire and Mahu Vice (August 2009), mystery novels which take place in Hawaii. Writing MM Romance with a Happy Ever After…

I am in awe that people read my writing and thank you all for taking the time to read, rate and review. Rj xxxxx

About me…I live in the UK just outside London. I love reading anything from thrillers to sci-fi to horror; however, my first real love will always be the world of romance. My goal is to write stories with a heart of romance, a troubled road to reach happiness, and more than a hint of happily ever after.

About Vicktor Alexander:

Vicktor Alexander “Vic” wrote his first story at the age of 10 about his youngest sister and her destruction of the world…with her breath.  Much to his youngest sister’s dismay the story was a hit and became the first story of a series all dealing with the planets that were destroyed by his siblings and their strange quirks and body odors. Vic now enjoys writing about shifters, humanoids, cowboys, firemen, rent boys, fairies, elves, dancers, doctors, Doms, Subs, and anything else that catches his fancy, all sexy men falling in love with each other and having lots of naughty, dirty, man-on-man sex.  Author of the best-selling series, The Tate Pack, Vic is a huge fan of the “happily-ever-after” ending. But while his characters all ride off into the proverbial sunset, all sexually satisfied and in love, they all bear the scars of fighting for that love, just like in real life. Out and proud, Vic does not believe that love only comes in one form, one race, one gender and that not only is gender fluid, by sexuality as well.  Vic loves to make people laugh and when he’s not writing, or rather, procrastinating in writing, he’s reading, playing the Sims 3, hanging out with his very supportive adopted family, talking to his adopted daughter, whom he affectionately calls “Chipmunk”, seeking the man or men who can handle his crazy, stressful, soap opera-esque life and being distracted from his writing by drooling over pictures of John Barrowman, Scott Hoying, Charlie David and Shemar Moore.

About Nicole Dennis:

Ever the quiet one growing up, Nicole Dennis often slid away from reality and curled up with a book to slip into the worlds of her favorite authors. Over the years, she’s created a personal library full of novels filled with dragons, fairies, vampires, shapeshifters of all kinds, and romance. Always she returned to romance. Still, there were these characters in her head, worlds wanting to be built on paper, and stories wanting to be told and she began writing them down whether during or after class. She continues to this day. Only recently has it begun to become fruitful, spreading out to let others read and enter her worlds, meet her characters, and see what she sees. No matter what she writes, her stories of romance with their twists of paranormal, fantasy, and erotica will always have their Happily Ever Afters.

She currently works in a quiet office in Central Florida, where she also makes her home, and enjoys the down time to slip into her characters and worlds to escape reality from time to time. At home, she becomes human slave to a semi-demonic tortie calico.

She loves to hear from readers and fans, so don’t be shy. Find her on the net or send an email.

About Jackie Nacht:

Short, sexy and sweet—where a little love goes a long way.

That’s the best way to describe Jackie Nacht’s stories. She was introduced to M/M Romance through her sister, Stephani, and read it for years. Then, she thought it was time to put her own stories on paper. She began writing short and sweet stories that ended with a happily ever after.

Thinking back to her own book addiction, where there were many nights she stayed up way too late so she could read just one more chapter—yeah, right—she decided to write short romances for young adults as well as adults. Hopefully, they will give high school and college students or working men and women something they can read during their lunch hour, in between classes or just when they want to briefly get away from the daily stresses of everyday life.

You can find her on Facebook, Twitter and at her webpage.

Anthology: Dr. Feelgood

Dr. FeelgoodDr. Feelgood

My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars

The blurb…

Whether they’re paramedics, nurses, therapists, doctors, or even actors who play them on TV, the men in the medical profession must contend with job stress and long hours that can make finding love a challenge. These dedicated professionals aid patients from the severely injured to those just needing some help with a bath, and along the way find creative ways to release some tension, reconnect with past partners, and even forge something that might last a lifetime.

Injuries, huge workloads, dedication to duty, self-doubt, and fear of coming out of the closet are only some of the obstacles standing in the way of the men committed to easing pain and those in need of treatment. But with hard work, some humor, some steamy on- and off-the-job trysts, plenty of patience, and open hearts, doctors and patients alike can find the healing they need, whether it comes from a lifelong commitment or a quickie in the staff room.

The men in this anthology are looking for relief, and they’re in luck—the doctor is in.

So what did I think?

Overall I enjoyed this anthology. I rated all stories 3 and above which was great. It took me a while to get through because my approach with anthologies is to read a story on those nights when I want a quick read before bed but don’t want to get sucked into a long novel. This was perfect and I ended many a night with a little bit of Dr. Feelgood. Overall rating 3.5.

Right-hand Man by Rob Rosen
Basically this is one quick – albeit very hot and sexy – scene as Alan gets a bath from his friendly and helpful neighbour Brad (we all need good neighbours like Brad!) Alan has a broken arm and luckily Brad is a medical professional who likes to do good deeds. There are witty lines and amusing banter with lots of sex. These guys are not shy, basically going at it from the moment they meet. 3 stars.

Mend What Is Broken by Fils Preis
I liked the realism of the traumatic experience. The descriptions took me right into the scene – the slipping in and out of conciousness, the confusion etc. I would have liked the story to continue for one or two more chapters to give more of a taste of the characters together but I guess you can’t have it all in a short story! 3 stars.

Doctor in the Desert by S.C. Wynne
This had some cute moments and the characters were really likable. I loved their date where they were feeling each other out – gay? not gay? just good at acting straight? The emotional connection between them was super-fast and the characters even acknowledge this so I wasn’t the only one thinking it! 🙂 My only puzzlement was how a doctor could have had such a bad time bottoming in the past as surely he would understand the need for prep so why not ask for it? Luckily he doesn’t have to ask his gorgeous policeman! 3.5 stars

Iron Man by Meg O’Brien
I loved Aiden and Bryan and I appreciated the author’s descriptions of the blind experience but I adored mom – she was wonderful and kind and funny. 4 stars

First and Last by Sara York
Love a story with a reunited men and I loved tat Jeffery didn’t hold a grudge about the past. I adored the father and son relationship between Trevin and Burt. 4 stars

Differential Diagnosis by Anna Martin
This was a cute story of life imitating art when lead characters on a soap opera play the part of lovers. I was really getting into it when it ended – unfortunately! The ending just seemed too abrupt. 3 stars

In My Own Skin by Thea Nishimori
This story was definitely different, given its focus on an illness that impacts Chris’ ability to meet men and engage in physical activity. His everyday living is obviously impacted as well as his chances at romance. It is nice that the author is providing a sense of realism and information on a condition that no doubt affects many, including herself but at times I thought it maybe a bit too descriptive – maybe I just think this because I’m thinking it doesn’t fit with ‘romance’. Anyway, it has nice potential for Chris to get his happy ending. 3 stars

Rx for Sex by Bru Baker
4 stars for a hot little sex scene in the on-call room! I loved the dirty talk, I loved Charlie’s cute prescription for Barr. I’d really like to hear more about these two.

Kind by Samuel Scott Preston
3 stars. Unlikely (I’m not sure that Derek would have really spent his recuperation with this team physical therapist) but it was sweet.

Hero Worship by Kris T. Bethke
I loved this story as it was but it would have made a great longer story. I loved all the characters including the sister/best friend. A bit of humour, nice sex, emotional soul searching and a happy ending. 5 stars

Tourniquet by Kaye P. Hallows
4.5 stars. I loved this story – heroes, the Dr House references, Kane’s personality and his persistence going after Weston and taking chances. “I want you to saw off that damn tourniquet around your heart and let me bring you back to life. I want your devotion, your respect, and your trust. I want you, all of you, not this watered-down version that makes you feel safe. I wany you to love the shit out of me without fear or reservation.”

Pain Management by Brigham Vaughn
A little niggle of inappropriateness but really who cares in a sweet short story involving a massage therapist and a patient with a chronic migraine. It’s amazing what a good massage (one very hot one, in particular) can do! 3.5 stars

Night Shift by Casey O’Neill
4 stars because I like drama and happy endings – plus there were cops! There’s no sex but that impact my enjoyment of the story which focused on a long term couple who are married but separated, struggling with accepting the risks that come with the job of a detective.

To The Next Level by Laura Mathews
A nice story with a military touch as Cameron goes through rehabilitation while falling for his therapist. A little flirtation but no boundaries crossed. It was sweet. 3.5 stars

☊☊☊ A selection of M/M audio books ☊☊☊

Those of you who read this blog may know that I usually have an audio book on the go. It’s the only way to make my daily commute to work bearable. In fact, if I’m lucky, I actually look forward to my trip! This week has been a prime example as I was spoiled to be listening to The Dark Tide by Josh Lanyon – it’s such a shame it’s the last book in the series. 😦

Anyway, here are a couple of audio books that I have finished recently.

❅❅❅❅❅❅❅

Kissing Joan CollinsKissing Joan Collins by Lex Valentine

Narrated by Chip Wood

Duration: 1 hour 49 minutes

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The blurb…

Gay suspense author Logan Moore fell in love with the most perfect gay man ever during his freshman year in college. But his roommate and best friend Chase Courtland never showed an interest in him. Twelve years and a handful of failed relationships later, Logan acknowledges that he still loves Chase. When Chase puts on a designer dress, four-inch heels and a wig and transforms himself into Joan Collins for a Valentine’s Day masquerade party, Logan’s libido rockets out of control. One look at Chase’s perfect ass in the skin tight dress and Logan is ready to drag him off to bed. But can two best friends bridge the gap of a dozen years of denial and build a life together after one amazing night of revelations, confessions and love?

So what did I think?

I listened to this in the audio version. Chip Wood, the narrator, did a brilliant job bringing the story to life. At just under 2 hours, it was relatively short in audio book terms (at least compared to some I’ve read) so would be a good intro book for someone who isn’t sure if audio book format is for them.

This is a friends-to-lovers Valentine’s themed story and follows Logan and Chase as they finally come together after years of being in love with one another.

The story was sweet, over-the-top emotions – but sometimes you just need lots of warm and fuzzy declarations of love!

Colorado Wild (Colorado Heart, #1)Colorado Wild by Sara York

Narrated by Stan Jensen

Duration: 5 hours

The blurb…

When love sneaks up on you, shoot for the heart.

Billy Bradford has a secret, and it’s bigger than the fact that he’s an assassin. When Tucker Hayes, Billy’s straight best friend, is injured on a mission, Billy acts in haste, kissing Tucker. Shocked by the act, Tucker runs. But desire is stronger than convictions, leading Tucker to hunt down Billy.

The other guys on the ranch are oblivious to Tucker and Billy’s actions as they investigate a new target. Grant Stovall is hung up on his ex, but Roger Burk, their new operative, catches his attention and one small touch isn’t enough.

Meet the cowboys of Wild Bluff Ranch in the first book of the Colorado Heart Series, Colorado Wild.

So what did I think?

This is an interesting one for me to review because I did find the experience of reading the book and listening to the audio version different. I really enjoyed the book, and the rest of the series I have read so far – 4.5 stars for all the action and the simmering relationships (click here for my review) – but the audio didn’t sit as well with me.

I wonder if this is because I read the books first and one impression of the characters in my head and it didn’t match the narrator and the accents he provided? Anyway, if you are unsure if the narrator, Stan Jensen is for you, do check out the audio sample before buying the book. But if you don’t go down the audio path, definitely buy the books!

From my original review…..”You need to suspend the disbelief that a high proportion of these elite military men are gay or bi, and just accept that Wild Bluff Ranch is a totally hot place to be!”

I also have a thing for book trailers, so make sure you check it out!

What Binds UsWhat Binds Us by Larry Benjamin

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Narrated by Richard Magnus

Duration: 7 hours

The blurb…

Thomas-Edward is only a teenager when he escapes his working-class neighborhood. He’s ready for anything—except the arrival of Donovan Whyte in his life. Sophisticated and dazzlingly handsome, Dondi quickly becomes the center of Thomas-Edward’s universe, introducing him to a world full of drama, passion and feuding families.

When their relationship fizzles, they remain uneasy friends until Dondi invites Thomas-Edward to his family’s summer house. Thomas-Edward is immediately attracted to Dondi’s mysterious brother, Matthew—and finds himself hopelessly drawn to both men.

As time passes, Thomas-Edward develops a unique bond with both brothers as they orbit around each other, although he knows only one of them can be his lifelong love. Will the three of them be able to find a way to hold on to each other? Or will love, its loss and the threat of death destroy their connection once and for all?

So what did I think?

This was another book I listened to by audio version and I really enjoyed it. The narrator, Richard Magnus, together with an engrossing story, kept me riveted for the whole 7 hour duration.

This story was a journey. It is the story of Thomas Edward who is swept up into the world of Dondi and his brother Matthew. Dondi and Matthew’s upbringing is a world away from Thomas Edward’s own background and the character’s themselves are unique.

The story begins with Thomas Edward having a relationship with Dondi. But Dondi isn’t the sort of man to be tied down in a relationship. However his friendship with Thomas Edward maintains steadfast and he flits in and out of his life. Importantly, he introduces Thomas Edward to his unusual family including his brother, Matthew.

This is a story of love and family and craziness. It’s interesting and unique. It’s emotional and it’s sad. Somewhat into the story I began to expect what the outcome might be but it made it no less emotional.

Meet the cowboys of Wild Bluff Ranch in the first book of the Colorado Heart Series, Colorado Wild.

So what did I think?

Wild Bluff Ranch is full of strong, tough and gorgeous military types, handpicked to form part of an elite and secret organisation. They take on missions to rid the world of the bad guys, missions that bypass ordinarily rules and go under the radar of the usual government organisations.

I loved the action and the multiple characters with a couple of relationships simmering at the same time. Billy and Tucker had a nice story – nothing like a near-death experience to bring people together! – but it is Grant’s story that forms a focus.

Grant has been deserted by the man he loved, with no hint as to what went wrong but he is temped by newcomer Roger. There is a bit of cliffhanger ending and you need to read the second book to find out the end of Grant’s story.

You need to suspend the disbelief that a high proportion of these elite military men are gay or bi, and just accept that Wild Bluff Ranch is a totally hot place to be!

Note: After the ending, the second book is introduced as Colorado Heat but it is actually Colorado Fire.

Colorado Fire (Colorado Heart, #2)Colorado Fire by Sara York

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The blurb…

Where there’s smoke, there’s fire.

Marshal has it bad, but can he figure it out before he ruins his relationship with his best friend, or will he mess up the one good thing in his life.

Zander doesn’t know if he’s coming or going. Life at Wild Bluff has been easy up until now. His head is spinning and his heart is aching. Can he figure out Marshal’s mess before it puts them both in hot water?

Grant Stovall is in too deep. Should he turn to or away from Roger Burk? If only the answers were easy, and he could be sure. Craig is back in town, ready to serve a burn notice, destroying everything the men of Wild Bluff hold dear.

So what did I think?

In this follow up to Colorado Wild, Roger and Grant get their HFN ending and a Zander and Marshal become a focus.

There is lots of action with Roger on a mission and Craig  (Grant’s ex) out to get them all at Wild Bluff Ranch. There are shootings, bashings, bombs and fires!

I am hoping there will be more books in the series – maybe Duff’s son (there were hints he may have some secrets) or the local firefighter/paramedic who stumbled on some of the ranch secrets? Please?

The Texas Soul series by Sara York

The Texas Soul series:

This review is for the series and as such, does not contain a lot of detail about the plot because it would be way too spoilerish! If you want to know more about the specifics of each book, check out the blurbs.

  • Texas Rough – (book #1)
  • Texas Hard – (book #2)
  • Texas Twist – (book #3)
  • Texas Branded – (book #4)
  • Texas Desire – (book #5)
  • Texas Legacy – (book #6)

Texas Rough (Texas Soul, #1) Texas Hard (Texas Soul, #2) Texas Twist (Texas Soul, #3) Texas Branded (Texas Soul, #4) Texas Legacy (Texas Soul #6)Texas Desire (Texas Soul, #5)

The Texas Soul series consists of six books which I pretty much read back to back.

The series starts with Texas Rough which focuses on one couple, Lane and Gresham, and is largely set on Gresh’s family ranch where Lane is the foreman. It also introduces another main character, Riley, who falls hard and fast for Lane. This first book is fast moving with lots of multiple story lines. There are themes of coming out and comfort/hurt with large amounts of drama and even larger amounts of sex!

The second book, Texas Hard,  focuses more on Riley as he deals with his feelings for Lane but meets and falls for Connor who is a Texas Ranger. This story brings in some elements of bondage as Riley takes a more dominant role in his relationship with Connor. Falling in love happens so quickly, as in the first book, that it is hard to believe that Riley really knows his own heart and it is amazing how open these men are in discussing their feelings! Once again, lots of drama, largely driven by insane amounts of jealousy as the story and relationships get complicated. I liked the story but did find the edition of the book I was reading had some annoying editing/spelling issues. There was also reference to speaking “Brazilian” in Brazil. I thought they spoke Portuguese.

Texas Twist sees things get even more complicated. We are introduced to a new romance as Connor’s Texas Ranger partner moves to the ranch to recover from the trauma of his abduction. He falls for Sterling, one of the ranch hands. Sterling finally acknowledges he may be gay as he has such as strong reaction to Erick. The believability is a bit lacking as his actions don’t seem those of a reluctantly gay man. He is pretty physical with Erick, demonstrative and once again discussing feelings. This new relationship is not the primary focus of the book. The Lane/Gresh/Riley/Connor relationship plays a really key role in this book.

The soap opera feel continues as Jung-Hwa “Jump” joins the story in Texas Branded.  Jump comes to the ranch in search of his father. He not only finds family but finds love with the local deputy. The love in the story is sweet and gushy with poetic language and once again this couple are very open with their emotions, articulating their feelings for each other. The relationship development also continues the theme of fast, fast, fast – love and proposals all happening really quickly. The relationships of all the previous couples continue to weave in and out of the book and things really ramp up with a cliffhanger ending! Luckily I didn’t have to wait and could launch into the next book straight away. If I’d read this book when it was first released and had to wait for the next book I would have been really annoyed as I don’t have the patience for this kind of thing!

Texas Desire is the fifth book in the series and the drama hit new heights. Lots of heartbreak and angst, hospitals and deathbeds, emotional declarations, rejection, pain and loss. The new couple, Kip and Jamie, play a role but largely take a backseat to the more emotional story line being played out between the original four characters.

And finally, Texas Legacy concludes the story. Once again, there is very much a soap opera feel to the story with the overlapping stories of each of the characters. There is lots of heartbreak but also happiness as new love is found and families started. It was nice to see the final conclusion and know what happens to each of the couples. The epilogue jumps ahead ten years and provides closure. My main issue with this final book was the resolution of the story line introduced in the prologue. The prologue deals with the previously unknown and unrelated Wild Bluff Ranch and then the character from the prologue turns up later in the book in a relatively stand alone fashion with a story line that is unresolved. I now understand from the author’s blog that this will be a spin off series but when I first ended the book the inclusion of the story line seemed a complete mystery to me.

So overall I actually enjoyed the series. It was pure escapism and really over the top at times. I have mentioned a soap opera feel but I think I must have been in the mood for reading something like this and I quite enjoyed the drama, the romance and the complications. Probably my main complaint (not that it is really a complaint as such) was that it was too full of sex. There seemed to be sex on every second page! The guys just seemed to alternate between sharing deep emotions and then doing each other.

I was also totally impressed with the price point, each book in the series only being $0.99 from Amazon.

3.5 stars for the series
