GUEST POST: Finding You by Lily Harlem

Writing with the Birds and the Bees

By Lily Harlem

Hello, and thank you for inviting me to Because Two Men Are Better Than One today. The sun is shining here in Wales, UK, (which is where I’ve called home for the last ten years) and lately I’ve been enjoying sitting in the garden writing each day. I find the sounds of the birds and the bees and the scents of the flowers very relaxing and good for my inspiration. I’m very lucky in that we have a pretty garden that’s up on a hill so I have views over fields and in the distance a forest.  Sometimes I find myself staring into the distance for ages, but I don’t scold myself for this as someone wise once said ‘when an author is staring into space, don’t disturb them, they’re working’, and it’s true, my mind is busy in these moments, dreaming up scenarios, running through dialogue, getting into the minds of my characters.

My garden also has what I call big sky, there’s a vastness to it and one of my favourite things to do after a day’s writing (it’s my full time job) is to pour a glass of white wine and watch the sun set. The cat usually jumps on my lap, glad that the incessant tap-tapping of the laptop has stopped, and more often than not there are clouds and they turn orange and pink as twilight descends and are wonderful for the game of creating images out of their shapes.

We had a long, wet winter here, no snow this year just lots of rain, though in my mind I was in sunny California. Why? Because over the winter I wrote an entire shifter series titled REDWOOD SHIFTERS. It’s a set of 6 books, M/M, M/M/M and M/M/F. The male romances and erotic scenes fill each book in the majority though I wanted some of my shifters, who live deep in the forest away from prying eyes, to have a female in their relationship too.

This is the case in book #2 FINDING YOU, though you won’t get to meet Julie for a while. That’s because I wanted the Alpha Male, Aleco and his mate Pedro to be the main stars of the book. They’re frantic when their third is taken and this makes for a volatile, tense situation which sets things on fire between them sexually.

I’m well known for writing ménage a trois stories, and have many – find them HERE – and really wanted to be able to bring that into the REDWOOD SHIFTERS series. There’s something so delicious about the dynamics of three people in love and lust, both in and out of the bedroom their relationship is fascinating. Add in the guys (or gals) being into each other too and the results are explosive.

In the REDWOOD SHIFTERS series there are 3 menage stories, two of which are M/M/F (FINDING YOU and HIS NEEDS) and one that is M/M/M (COMPLETE US). The other books are M/M and you can find them all on my website.

Thank you for reading

REDWOOD SHIFTERS

Deep in California, amidst the forests, valleys and mountains a pack of sexy canine shifters live, laugh and love. Free from persecution and curious eyes they mate for life and will kill for the ones their hearts beat for.

But even an idyllic existence has bumps in the road, and with love always comes pain. That’s when man, or dog, has to rise to the challenge, fight for what’s theirs and remember that a true, everlasting soul bond is the ultimate prize to strive for.

Books ideally read in order but can be enjoyed as standalone reads.

GUEST POST: Wild Rose, Silent Snow by Angel Martinez

Communicating with Animals in Fiction

Angel Martinez

Humans have communicated with animals in one way or another since before the last Ice Age. Most often, the exchange of information comes with repetition and practice, verbal or physical signals given to result in a specific behavior. We tell our dogs to sit. We communicate direction and speed to horses with our knees and hands. Our cats learn that they should come for food by associating feeding with certain sounds.

Sometimes, though, communication with non-humans is far more complicated. Animal behaviorists have proven over the last century that several species are capable not only of mimicry where human speech is concerned but of language acquisition. That is to say, these species understand words and can use them in unique patterns to communicate thoughts, both concrete and abstract. When a car struck and killed the kitten who had been Koko the gorilla’s companion, Koko conveyed not only sorrow in sign language but also an understanding that the kitten had died. Alex, the African gray parrot, had a vocabulary of over a hundred words and used them in a sort of code to communicate with humans. Beluga whales have been documented learning how to use their vestibular sacs to mimic human speech in what appears to be a genuine and spontaneous attempt to communicate with us.

In fiction we often get to use different rules—talking animals in Oz and Narnia, telepathic ones on Pern and so on—but the easy route isn’t always one that fits the story. In Wild Rose, Silent Snow, one of the questions I had to ask myself was if a human intelligence were trapped in an animal body, one without the proper larynx to make human sounds or opposable thumbs to make human letters, how would that person communicate? Beyond the most basic types of communication such as nodding or shaking the head, pushing toward or away from an object, leading or refusing to follow, how would such a person communicate ideas that are more complex?

Alex the parrot actually provided inspiration on that front. Dr. Pepperdine, who had been working with Alex in her avian language project, had decided to teach Alex to spell short words by using letter blocks. I’m uncertain whether any African gray might eventually be taught this with enough work and patience or if Alex was simply a linguistic genius, but he did understand the letters represented certain sounds. He was a bit of a contrary soul, though, and refused to show visitors this skill once, demanding a nut instead, and eventually sounded out the word nut (N-U-T) to emphasize his displeasure rather than using the spelling blocks. (You can read about Alex and Dr. Pepperdine in Alex and Me, if you’re so inclined.)

Which is all a rather long-winded way to say that I ended up using plastic letters, the magnetic backed sort, as a means for a character without hands to communicate. While I don’t want to give too much away, it seems to have worked.

About Wild Rose, Silent Snow

A huge bear at the door, a handsome, naked stranger in the snow, magic fish, enchanted beards—and Rowan thought his life was odd before.

Content with the quiet isolation of their lake house, Snowden and Rowan Hadley survive on summer jobs and winter hunting, unable to move on since their parents died. Their peace is shattered by a strange, human-acclimated bear who insists on following Rowan like a giant hunting dog and again by the discovery of a naked, surly stranger in the snow.

Both bear and man lead the Hadley brothers into a strange, surreal world where sorcery and RPG software intertwine. Curses and magical traps lie in wait around every turn. Rowan and Snowden will need to adjust their view of how the world works, and quickly, if they want to live through rescuing their enchanted princes.

About Angel Martinez

The unlikely black sheep of an ivory tower intellectual family, Angel Martinez has managed to make her way through life reasonably unscathed. Despite a wildly misspent youth, she snagged a degree in English Lit, married once and did it right the first time, (same husband for almost twenty-four years) gave birth to one amazing son, (now in college) and realized at some point that she could get paid for writing.

Published since 2006, Angel’s cynical heart cloaks a desperate romantic. You’ll find drama and humor given equal weight in her writing and don’t expect sad endings. Life is sad enough.

She currently lives in Delaware in a drinking town with a college problem and writes Science Fiction and Fantasy centered around gay heroes.

Wild Rose, Silent Snow Excerpt:

After the storm, their little island wood had taken on fairyland qualities, the sun sparking off frost jewels on stone and turning the trees’ icicle banners to cold fire. Rowan loved the winter, despite the hardships it brought now. He took a moment at the back door to pull in a deep, biting breath. A pristine blanket overlay the mud and detritus of the back of the property. Only the lonely beanpoles sticking up from Snowden’s garden plot gave any signs of domestication.

Snow’s garden… He hoped they’d be able to scrape together some money in early spring for seeds and a few little plants. When their parents had been alive, the vegetable garden had been a glorious achievement. Every plant Snow touched seemed eager to grow and produce for him. Each year his garden expanded in yield and sheer beauty, rosemary, marigolds, and geraniums blooming alongside the vegetable and fruit plants as guardians against pests.

This year… Something has to change. We can’t keep living like this.

But what? And how? Rowan trudged toward the woods in his snowshoes, mindful of hummocks in the snow that indicated downed branches.

He’d teased Snow once that if they went into a job interview as one person, someone might actually hire them with Rowan to speak for them and Snowden to fill out the application. If only they could somehow merge into one person and be whole again.

Familiar trees marked his route. He took his time, checking and resetting each empty snare. Anything would be welcome, of course—a squirrel, a pheasant—but with so much of the wildlife hunkered down for the winter, all the snares were empty.

With a disappointed huff, he reset the last one, turned back toward the house, and froze, his heart slamming against his ribs. Not more than ten feet away, his coat dusted in snow, stood a brown bear the size of a compact car.

How the hell does something that big make no sound?

Rowan backed a careful, slow step. The bear watched him silently, his only movement a shift of weight from one front paw to the other and the dragon steam of his breath on the morning air. He tried to remember everything he had heard about bears. Did you stand still and hope it went away? Did you run like hell and hope it wasn’t interested?

Running seemed foolish with the bear watching him so intently. Another step back…another…then his snowshoe caught on a log to send him flailing backward. The air rushed from his lungs as his back hit hard pack. The impact jarred his grip on his rifle, the weapon skittering across the clearing.

A heavy weight settled on his chest. The bear gazed down at him, pinning him with one huge paw. He lay as still as his trembling allowed, gulping for air that felt suddenly too thick to breathe.

I’m going to die. Snow, I’m so sorry… Oh, God, I don’t want to die like this…

Images of his poor twin coming out into the snow to find him and discovering only the blood and gore of his remains haunted him. He squeezed his eyes shut, waiting for the pain to start.

And waited. And waited.

He cracked an eye open, hoping the pressure on his chest was just anxiety and the bear had wandered off. No such luck. Bear. Still very much looming over him, head cocked to one side. Damn if he doesn’t look…puzzled.

“Mr. Bear,” he ventured softly, knowing it was just a hair shy of idiotic, but too nervous to keep quiet any longer. “Think you could let me up, maybe?”

The huge head lowered. Rowan’s heart lurched hard as if it recognized its last beat. Please make it quick. Tear the jugular. Still, no pain followed the bear’s movements. Even with all of Rowan’s personal proximity alarms screaming, his body urging him to kick out, yell, do something, he lay still, mesmerized as the bear snuffled at his hair and face.

A grunt in his ear sent shivers down his back, but the bear finished his inspection by nuzzling at his jaw. The heavy paw lifted and the bear sat with an odd, mournful moan.

Rowan sat up slowly, easing back to gain a few feet between them. Jump up, grab the rifle and run? But the bear sat squarely in his path to his Remington, staring at him solemnly.

That regard somehow struck him as alien intelligence rather than ursine, something both sad and curious in that steady gaze, if one could assign emotions to a bear’s strange, white-less eyes. The bear sat back, human-wise, on his butt, back legs stuck out in front. Definitely ‘he’ from that angle. The pose seemed an assurance of non-aggression.

“I’m getting up now,” Rowan said in that same soft, reasonable tone, uncertain of his sanity as he tried to negotiate with an ursine intellect who couldn’t possibly understand what he said.

The bear grunted and gave a resigned huff, but he didn’t move.

“Don’t have anything for you. And humans taste pretty awful…”

A snort from the bear.

“So I’m just going to go back home now if that’s all right with you.” He backed a step, risked turning when the bear still didn’t move, and started slowly through the ice-laden trees toward the house.

When he glanced back, his breath caught. The bear was following. He stopped. The bear stopped. He took another step. The bear echoed him, step for step, always keeping a few feet behind him.

BLURB: “Win the love of the wolf with the hardest heart.”

Faced with eternal banishment to hell, Anubis, god of the underworld, has found a loophole in one of the oldest laws which will allow him to unleash his evil on an unsuspecting human world. Orion’s only hope to stop him is to accept his challenge: send a champion to win the love of the wolf with the hardest heart. It will take someone with a pure heart to soften a closed one, so faced with the threat of losing not only the werewolves, but the destruction of the human race, the gods can only do one thing — send Adam, one of their own.

Adam quickly realizes that the werewolf whose love he must win is Jed. Wounded after the loss of his wife and son, Jed promised he would never love again or be responsible for someone else’s happiness. Adam has been given a near impossible task.

Anubis is eager to see Adam fail, and unbeknown to everyone takes matters into his own hands to make sure of it. Everything happening now is part of his master plan, and finally it has come full circle.

Even if Adam succeeds and wins Jed’s heart, will that love survive when Jed discovers the whole thing was nothing more than a bet? Or when Adam does the one thing he mustn’t and falls in love himself, will he not only break Jed’s heart but completely destroy his own?

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT

He quickly set his hand to a steady rhythm, coaxing all sorts of wonderful sounds from Adam, helpless to keep his own eyes open even though he wanted to gaze in awe at the rapture on Adam’s face. It was so good. The friction made him helpless to stop the deep shudders that wracked his body and seemed to rush through his blood. Adam’s cries turned to simple begging when he twisted his wrist and brushed his palm over both swollen heads — not to stop, never to stop, and how he was so close and how it was so good.

Was it pleasure or was it bone deep need that kept Jed’s hand urging them on, his lips slack, his eyes screwed tight as he rode the wave that built in his groin and lapped at every inch of Adam’s skin. He felt the heat on his hand and the pulse in his cock. Heard the soft guttural cry from Adam and leaned forward, his lips possessing Adam’s mouth as if he could swallow his cry of release and keep it inside of him.

Jed gentled his hand as Adam mewled in the back of his throat, both of Adam’s hands surrounding his neck and pressing tightly with an overwhelming urge to simply hang on.

They shared kisses. Shared air. Jed swallowed every reaction from Adam because it was precious. Finally, he wiped his hand and their bodies clean on the sheet and drew Adam in closer.

His heart beat loudly in his ears. Jed didn’t want to think about what they had just done, and let reality intrude on the bliss that seemed to wrap them both up. It wasn’t the whole fucking a guy thing, even though he was still in shock about that. It was the need inside of him, the nameless urge that transcended sex or narrow bigoted views of what made other people happy. In a lot of ways, it wasn’t even the fact that Adam was human and Jed was not.

It was his unshaking certainty that as soon as Jed trusted, as soon as Jed let in a little belief, as soon as Jed started thinking in terms of forever… That’s when it would happen. That’s when his forever would be ripped away. It had with his family. The day his father hadn’t returned from the hunt because of a human’s bullet. The day they’d fled their home because the forest was cleared to make a human town, and his family had no idea how to live in one. The day he was out scrounging for food to fill their empty bellies because it was winter and they should have been warm and safe in their homes, and his little sister had been attacked by a rogue. The rogue had been insane, half-mad with whatever injustice had caused him to attack a pup, and his mom had died trying to defend her.

And then he had trusted once more. Raye had waltzed into his life and danced his objections away. Then it had happened again, as surely as Jed feared it would.

He clutched Adam tighter, knowing his hold wouldn’t last, knowing Adam would be ripped from him like everyone else…

He no longer had any dreams that could be taken from him. He’d accepted long ago that the pack would be his life, but he would go home alone every day. He almost didn’t mind because he knew it wasn’t a matter of if Adam would realize he was a pathetic old man and would leave.

It was simply a matter of when.

A dragon is about to find out what happens when a cat discovers his cave of shiny treasures.

After nine years, Pib is finally free from his contract with the newly wed prince. Slipping out in the middle of the night to avoid getting stuck in another contract, Pib shifts into his cat and makes his way home to the little village he foolishly left, hoping his best friend Wil still lives there.

Dray is bored. His services as a princess-guarding dragon are no longer needed and even his gold and jewels are unable to cheer him up. His mood changes quickly when he catches someone in his treasure cave, and it starts a series of events that change his life forever.

When the two finally meet, sparks fly, but Dray will have to move quickly if he’s to save his cat after Pib gets kidnapped.

Excerpt:

Prologue

Pib snuck into the darkened room, tiptoeing quietly so as not to wake the newly crowned prince Geraint and his princess. Looking around, he both thanked and cursed his shifter senses. While he was grateful he could see inside the room, the smell of sex throughout the air was something he could have done without.

Reaching the desk on the far side of the room, he paused and glanced at the couple. Once he was satisfied they were still asleep, he eased open the cover and found what he was after—his freedom. After nine long years as the bastard’s slave, the letter freeing him from servitude almost brought tears to his eyes. Carefully folding it and placing it in his inside pocket, Pib gently shut the desk and tiptoed back toward the bedroom door, leaving the room as silently as he’d entered.

He knew there was only a limited window of opportunity for him to make his escape. Even though the pompous bastard had made a production of signing the form and granting him his freedom, Pib knew it was all for show. If he didn’t escape now, Geraint would get him alone and force him to sign another contract and then make some sort of bogus announcement about how Pib wanted to stay.

Pib snorted, unable to help himself. Luckily there was no one else around the castle at this time of the night, though even if there was, Pib didn’t care. He was leaving, and no one was going to stop him. Anyone who tried would have a close encounter with his knife, or his claws, he wasn’t picky.

“Hey, Pib, where are you off to in the middle of the night?” asked the guard at the front door of the castle. Pib never bothered learning their names or getting friendly with them, especially since Geraint could force him to kill any of them at a moment’s notice. He’d learned that it didn’t pay for him to form any attachments with those surrounding Geraint.

“Getting an early start on my retirement,” Pib replied, smirking at the man while he continued to stroll toward the exit.

“Sorry, Pib, but I have to check. Do you have a signed letter from Prince Geraint?” The guard shifted from foot to foot, showing his unease.

Pib stopped in front of him and forced a smile. “Of course,” he said, carefully extracting the letter and handing it over to the guard.

He waited, watching the guard closely as he read the letter. One wrong move and Pib was going to gut him. Nothing could happen to that letter.

“Looks good,” the guard said, handing the letter back to Pib. “It’ll sure be different without you around, but all the best. And, uh, don’t take this the wrong way, but I hope I don’t see you again.”

Returning the letter to his pocket, Pib looked up and smiled a real smile at the man. He wanted to laugh when the guard’s face paled as he caught sight of Pib’s canines, but restrained himself. “Don’t worry, I hope never to see you again either.”

With that, Pib walked out of the castle and made his way through the sleeping village. Pulling his hood up, he used the dark material to blend into the surroundings. He wasn’t taking any chances that Geraint wouldn’t wake up any moment and send guards running after him. After all, Pib was practically friends with all of the skeletons in Geraint’s closet.

Pib reached the edge of the village and paused. After nine long years, he was finally free of Geraint, his orders, and most importantly, his shackle. The magical cuff that had decorated his right ankle for nine years had been removed after Geraint had signed his release. The cuff was the only thing ensuring Pib’s obedience, and finally, it was gone.

Taking a deep breath, Pib stepped over the invisible boundary line and felt the remaining enchantments shatter and disappear, leaving him standing as his true self for the first time in years. Reaching inside, he called out his inner cat to come out and play, and in seconds, his clothes disappeared and he was standing on all fours in his serval form. Stretching, he threw one last glance back at the castle and the village before slinking away into the trees, using the natural camouflage to shield him as he made his way toward the start of his new life.

EXCERPT: Moonlit Escapades (Moonlit Wolves 7.5) by Bronwyn Heeley

Moonlit Wolves 7.5Moonlit Escapades (Moonlit Wolves 7.5)

Blurb

There is never a time when a visit from old friends isn’t comforting.

Ever wonder how Jex and Matt ended up in that compromising position in book 4? Or what the fight between Phil and Craig was about? Or how about how they all became so close and ended up living together?

Well, here’s your chance. All the missing pieces that were linked but not fully explained are bundled together in this heart-warming anthology, and just in time for Christmas, because who doesn’t like to visit from family at this time of year.

Note: series must be read in order, but these shorts can be read separately, they’ll just be enjoyed more as companions.

Excerpt

Jex let out a sigh of relief as he sat back into the lounge. Matt and he hadn’t been in this house for a long time, but he had definitely felt more at home quicker than at any of the other place his father took him.

However, his dad hadn’t been the kindest person, and they’d moved from one town to the next, leaving many people hating him because of what his father had done. Matt, with a quick kidnapping and a much-needed getaway, brought Jex to this lovely little town out in the boondocks, an unlikely place his father would never bother to look.

They’d reached town and a house full to the brim with men. Matt’s cousin and a bunch of mates had taken them both in and treated Jex like no one had done before Matt.

Jex loved the freedom of being himself, even if they all turned out to be a werewolf every time the moon was full. A lot to take in, but he had seen a lot of violence and bullshit in his life, so the werewolf factor seemed like a cakewalk.

In addition, he’d personally seen Matt change, so who was he to say something didn’t exist?

A cold bottle tapped on his shoulder, making Jex look over his shoulder. He took the bottle.

Taking a long drink of this piss-shit that the bottle label said was beer, he studied Matt. His lover rounded the couch and sat down next to him. Jex wasn’t a fan of Tooheys, he was more a VB man, but beggars couldn’t be choosers—or, more for him, lazy arses deserved to drink horse piss. He was, however, a fan of the man—tall, blonde, with deep-set eyes. He was like a walking wet dream. Someone who needed to be naked and fucking so everyone would see his true beauty.

He was a fucking dream. Jex’s dream. Even if it had taken the guy a couple of turns to realise just how Matt liked it when Jex fucked him and then give him more than he’d ever understood he wanted. Jex reckoned it came from the fact that he hadn’t ever been free to actually fuck another person before Matt.

“Taste like shit?” Matt chuckled next to him.

For the first time in a long time—and yet not a first for the thought—Jex wondered what he saw in a man who actually liked this shit.

“Why ask when you know the answer,” Jex spat back at him around another mouthful of beer. He was hoping if he drank it fast enough and got the buzz of beer in his system, it might actually start tasting nice.

Matt shook his head really slowly. That you’re fucking crazy shake, though the twitch of his lips held the joke.

“Fucking arse,” Jex muttered, finishing off his first bottle with a cringe—Fuck! This shit was bad.

Matt chuckled again. “Ah, but that’s what you love ‘bout me.”

Jex shook his head, a small smile pulling at his lips at the words, only his mouth hadn’t even completed the move before Matt’s lips covered his. The move Jex had been waiting for finally came. He snickered softly into Matt’s mouth. They were alone after all.

“It makes me feel all gooey inside to see you smile like that, and knowing it’s all mine… gets me hot as hell,” Matt whispered, a breath away from Jex’s lips.

Jex’s back arched at the scrape of whiskers against his upper lip. “Gooey?” Jex tried to make it a joke, not being able to deal with the softer sides of love.

“Oh, yeah,” Matt moaned theatrically. “It’s like melted lava inside me, mate.”

“So you’re a cooked marshmallow?” Jex muttered between the light kisses Matt was giving him. He needed more than the teasing. Already his skin was hot, his cock throbbed. He hated the teasing. Jex needed more… rubbing, thrusting, harder!

“Cooked Marshmallow?” Matt pulled back, apparently, finally, thinking around his own cock to what Jex had said.

“Shut up, man.” Jex laughed. “How can I think with my cock this hard?”

Matt burst out into laughter. Jex shifted back as Matt’s weight transferred onto his knees, since he’d straddled Jex sometime during the kiss.

Today I am talking about an anthology for my Moonlit Wolves series, It’s a fun little book that captures parts and explain parts of certain books that were in the story but weren’t really part of it. I didn’t want to take away the forces on the series and was advised against putting these shorts (they weren’t as created as they are in this book) into the back of the books, however I still had them and I thought they needed a book all for themselves. So I filled them up so that not only will it give fans of the series something special, but also allow others to come in and see what the series is about, get a little taste.

However, this means that a lot of the stories heavily feature couples I thought I’d talk more about the series

Why should we read the series?

This series is a fast paced manga style series, which follows the lives of a group of young men trying to just live. They only really know so much about themselves so all they’re able to do is deal with one problem at a time.

There is 6 original boys, Colin, Kyle, Gene, Chris Adam and James, who all grew up together, got bitten at the same time, and generally become the first part of the family.

The first arc in this series of, well, there’ll be 30 books all up, is about them, learning who they are, falling in love and fighting for, well, their lives.

It can get dark and graphic and some of the books could use another go through editing, but if you let the story flow around you you’ll fall in love with each and every character.

From book 2 to book 7 needs to be read in order, they are very tightly connected (with the slight excepting of book 5, though it’s still needed).

I feel it’s a very original paranormal, the same troupe everyone has read and written, but in a slight different style with the gore that I felt was missing in those other books. They’re light reads, they move quickly and they are just a little more than the light fluffy paranormal romance you normally read. Hell, they might be more erotic than romance, but it’s there, in the pages. Each character is falling and they are falling fast, they just might not tell each other with words.

The series  so far, which needs to be read in order

  • Loved By A Werewolf (this one does not need to be read to enjoy the series)
  • Forever With My Werewolf
  • Seeking My Werewolf
  • Taking Control of My Werewolf
  • A Werewolf’s Howl
  • The Rub of My Werewolf
  • Protecting My Werewolf
  • Moonlit Escapades

Zeke led Owen into the barn with the quad bikes. “You need to stay with me.”

“Can you keep up with me?” Owen wasn’t teasing. He could run fast, particularly with the sleep and food he’d had over the last couple of days.

“I think so.” Zeke swung his leg over the seat of the quad bike as Owen stripped off his clothes.

Owen shifted and looked at his mate. “Let’s go.” He started to run, hearing the quad bike cough into life and start following him.

He pushed hard, feeling the air burn in his lungs and the earth beneath his paws. This was what he needed. Exercise and connection to the universe. He couldn’t imagine being a human and not having a link to the world around him. Humans didn’t know what they were missing.

“Some humans,” Zeke corrected.

“You’ve known me for a couple of hours and you think you know everything?”  Owen meant it at as a tease but there was an element of truth in there. Being a shifter was so much more than most humans could ever imagine.

“I get the impression I’ll never know everything about you.”

“Damn right,” Owen agreed.

“I like that.”

Owen stumbled at the wave of satisfaction from Zeke. His big mate didn’t want simple. He liked Owen, as roughed-up and broken as he was. Owen wasn’t used to anyone wanting him for who he was.

“You were waiting for me.”

Owen laughed at him over the mate link. “You’re so full of it!” At Zeke’s amusement, Owen shivered with pleasure. “See if you can keep up with this—human!”

He forged on ahead, knowing he was going to reach the border of Sapphire Ranch soon and be on the old ranch’s deserted land. Aware of Zeke behind him, the quad drawing close, Owen had a decision to make. Part of him still wanted to run and keep running—a large part of him, if he were honest. But with his mate at his back, the moon was calling him to do something else.

“I’m here, Owen.”

Owen slowed before he reached the fence line, and turned to face Zeke, who stopped the quad. The moon glimmered off Zeke’s skin and Owen shivered again, this time with want. He wanted Zeke like he’d not wanted any other man. Owen had been hard from the minute he stepped into the diner. Now he wanted to do something about it. He shifted and walked up to the bike, knowing his intent was clear through the mate link and his body language.

Haven leaned back on his heels, quickly wiping his cum covered hand off on the grass before getting up, mumbling under his breath as he gave Alexander a quick glance. “What the fuck was I thinking?”

He stumbled toward camp, braiding his hair back with determination.

At first Alexander was taken aback, almost shocked by his abrupt, cold dismissal but it only lasted for a few short seconds before he got his bearings again. His new found confidence and possessive streak took over. Like the swift “animal” he actually was, he stood, crossing Haven’s path in no time. When their eyes met, sparks flew. There was nothing submissive at all with the look that sparked in Alexander’s eyes.

“No. You’re mine, Haven. Mine. I’ve waited for you for years and I’m done. Get used to it because you belong to me now.” His voice was calm but there was no misunderstanding the words that were spoken. He gripped Haven’s jaw in one firm grip. With a great force, that shouldn’t have been possible, he claimed Haven’s lips with his own, forcing his tongue into his mouth as he gasped at the heated intrusion. Dominating Haven and the kiss completely Haven couldn’t help but to give himself permission to melt into the hungry kiss. Just for a few seconds. When Alexander finally broke off the kiss, they were both breathing hard lips still only inches apart as they tried to stare each other out. Haven was the one who looked away first.

Alexander gave him a calm, almost arrogant smirk before turning his attention to getting himself dressed, rather than standing around with his jeans halfway down his thighs.

“In your dreams,” Haven muttered, shaking his head. He was pissed at himself for letting his emotions get the better of him. See what losing control did? It fucked everything up, and what the hell was wrong with Alexander? That kid needed a new hobby, one that didn’t involve him. But Haven feared that Alexander had made up his mind and wasn’t letting go.

“Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.

He was so screwed.

Creative Minds - About the Author

Phetra often refers to herself as the odd man out, the dorky book nerd who rather spend her time with a good book or making up fantastic stories with even more fantastic characters, than live in the real world dealing with real people.

The real world is strange in a very non humorous way and people in it complicate it to the point of wearing you out. In the world of the written word no matter if it is in someone else’s words or that of her own things might get busy, complicated, and sometime even plain painful but somewhere along the line there is always a hero on the horizon. He might not be prime or proper, a church going pretty boy since the author prefer rebellious men and women who don’t follow the protocols of society.

One of her favorite saying are that only dead fish follow the stream and well she ain’t no dead fish.

Phetra live together with her family, two children, a domestic partner and their two cats in Gothenburg, Sweden and when reading her books you will notice that she always finds a way of bringing her on culture into her books.

The joy of writing and reading comes from her childhood and is something she has always loved, something she is passionate to share with others. Phetra loves hearing from her readers even with ideas of what they want to come next.

If you are looking for her the best place to start looking for her is at home in the quietest corner of the house where you’ll find her either curled up with her Kindle or her laptop typing away.

GUEST POST: Into the Arena by Elizabeth Coldwell

intothearena_800

Guest Post  – Into The Arena by Elizabeth Coldwell

Who hasn’t dreamed of being a movie star at some point? It has to be high on the list of fantasy jobs – the worldwide fame, the magazine covers, the multi-million dollar pay cheques, the film premieres, the Oscar night acceptance speeches… Of course, it helps to be as good looking as Bradley Cooper or Ryan Reynolds, but in fantasy land we can all be that hot and charming, right?

In reality, for most up and coming actors life isn’t that glamorous, and the red carpet can seem a long way out of reach. It’s often been pointed out that most of the hopefuls who arrive in Los Angeles hoping to become stars end up becoming waiters instead. The competition for any role is fierce, and the audition process can be frustrating and humiliating. You need to have an inner strength and self-belief if you don’t want to be ground down by rejection. If your face fits and you have the acting chops for a particular part, however, who knows how far you’ll be able to go?

That’s the position Hayden Skarz finds himself in at the beginning of Into The Arena. He’s already had a small amount of success, but when he’s given the script for Thrown To The Lions, he knows this is the film that will propel its male lead onto the Hollywood A-list. It’s the story of a man in a dystopian future society who is punished for his crimes by being sent back in time to fight as a gladiator in the arenas of ancient Rome. It also features some very steamy love scenes, although the openly gay Hayden feels he’ll be able to take those in his stride.

What Hayden doesn’t realise is that by landing the part he’ll embark on a journey that will propel him into the arms of the gorgeous Cesare Bianco, a man who’s hiding the secret that he’s really a lion shifter searching for his chosen mate. (Like all the books in the Lionhearts series, Into The Arena explores what happens when a shifter and a human fall in love.) And it’ll also make him a target of a stalker who’s convinced that he is the only man Hayden could ever need, and is prepared to do whatever it takes to make him see that…

Excerpt

“So what’ll it be?” the man asked again. He had the most amazing eyes Hayden had ever seen, almost gold in hue, and caramel-blond hair that fell to his shoulders in waves. And though he didn’t look like any of the dark-haired, dark-eyed Romans, he definitely had a strong Italian accent.

“What do you have?” Hayden asked. The choices had been chalked up on a board at the side of the hatch but he wanted to string out his conversation with this gorgeous guy.

“There’s lasagna al forno, Thai green chicken curry or baked stuffed peppers.”

“We’re in Italy, so it has to be the lasagna.”

He waited while the man put a generous portion on his plate then handed it to him.

“Salad is on the table to your right, and you’ll find cutlery and soft drinks there, too.”

“Thanks— I’m sorry, I didn’t catch your name.” He was determined to make a point of getting to know as many of the crew by name as he could. It only seemed polite.

Otherwise you gain a reputation as the kind of asshole who thinks he’s above everybody.

“I’m Cesare, and that’s my boss, Gail.” The man gestured to the blonde who stood beside him, ladling curry onto a plate.

“Nice to meet you, Cesare. I’m Hayden.”

Cesare nodded. When he looked back at Hayden, it seemed there was obvious interest in those incredible eyes.

No, it’s more like we met in some other life. Like I’m the one he’s been waiting for…

Hayden smiled to himself. Where the hell had that notion appeared from?

That’s the problem with playing a guy who travels in time. You start to think that kind of thing could really happen.

He could have hung around there forever, certain Cesare felt the same spark he did, but he was holding up the queue.

Blurb

He will fight for the one he loves, no matter what it takes.

Cesare Bianco is a shifter without a pride. Exiled from his home town of Padua after losing a leadership fight to his corrupt, self-serving uncle, he travels to Rome in search of a new beginning. A chance meeting sees him taking a job on the catering crew of a Hollywood blockbuster. When he meets the movie’s handsome lead actor, Hayden, he knows he’s in the presence of his mate. But Hayden is human. Even though he offers the possibility of lasting love, Cesare must fight all his instincts to make it happen.

Hayden Skarz is on the verge of the big time. Landing the lead in sci-fi adventure Thrown to the Lions has put him on the road to stardom. Filming in Rome is a difficult new challenge for him, though being around Cesare, the hunk who works in the catering truck, makes his job much sweeter. Sex between them is passionate and wildly inventive. But Hayden has a stalker, who’s tired of being ignored in favour of other men. When what started as a crush turns into murderous obsession, can Cesare help Hayden make it off the film set alive?
