A Day In the Life of… Will Parkinson

Today Will Parkinson has joined us as he celebrates the release of Wet Paint.

And lucky for us he’s given us a bit of glimpse into his life as an author.

Wet Paint

Like many readers, I’m fascinated to know more about the life of the authors who are behind the books I love. Would you be able to share with us a “Day In The Life of Will Parkinson.”?

We’d love a little glimpse of how you start your day, what you get up to, how you juggle your writing with the myriad of other things going on and any other little tidbits you’re willing to share.

Hi, Nic! Thank you so much for having me here.

My day is actually pretty boring. I go to bed about 8 pm and get up about 1 am to talk with KC Wells so we can plan our new book or we can chat about where we are in our current work. After 4 am my time, KC generally goes to her favorite writing spot called Steep Hill (which I refer to as Sheep Hill just to irritate her). When she leaves, I make breakfast for my clan (4 dogs, 3 cats, 1 or 2 men, depending on if our friend is staying overnight). Then after breakfast I go back to bed for about an hour or so.

After I wake up, I let the dogs out for a while, then come back in and start working on my Pride Promotions mail and tours. I love doing these because they give me the opportunity to work with some amazing authors and bombastic bloggers.

After I get caught up on that, I move over to writing. I work with a group that does work sprints – we either write or do edits or whatever is on our to do list – for 45 minutes at a time. I find that with the deadline looming, I get a lot more done.

At 3:15 pm the bitter half (yes, that is not a spelling mistake) gets home, so I make dinner. After we eat, I go back to writing for a few more hours before bed.

Then get up and start the whole cycle over again. I have to say, retiring was the best thing I’ve ever done.

Okay, I’m exhausted just reading that! I have no idea how on earth you manage to keep those hours and get so much done. But I’m glad you do and I’m very much looking forward to reading Wet Paint. Thanks for stopping by.

Nic xx

Although Addy’s heart and body bear the scars from his life before he was adopted by the Deans, he’s ached for something he thought he would never find. Until he met Benny. He isn’t sure how anyone can care for someone as broken as he is, even though he wants it desperately.

High school senior Benny Peters has his whole life planned out for him, until a chaste kiss at summer camp opens a new world of possibilities. Determined to erase Addy’s insecurities, Benny works to take away his boyfriend’s pain and replace it with love.

When Addy’s past intrudes on their future, it’s going to take everything Benny can muster to show that no matter what – or who – they face, they belong together.

Excerpt:

ADDY SAT in the car, worry creasing his brow. Not even an hour ago, he’d been so happy. Why was he so nervous now? His thoughts drifted back to his conversation with his dad. Would Benny still want him when he found out what had happened? Would he think Addy was too broken? Addy shivered. He tried to tell himself Benny would never be like that, but how could he know for sure?

“What’s up, little man? I can hear you thinking from over here.” Benny chuckled.

“Nothing, Benny. I’m okay.”

“Addy, c’mon. I can tell you’ve got something on your mind. I need to know what it is. I can’t help if you won’t let me.”

Addy took a deep breath. “I’m afraid,” he admitted. “Of what? Camp?” “No… of losing you.”

“I don’t understand. Why would you think you’d lose me?”

“Benny.” Addy sighed. “I need to tell you some stuff. It’s not going to be easy, and it’s really not going to be nice.”

About the Author

WILL PARKINSON believes that no matter what obstacles are thrown in the path of young love, it will always find a way to win in the end. He wants his characters to have their happily ever after, but that doesn’t mean that it’s going to come easily.None of this would have happened if he had followed the advice he was given many years ago. “What are you wasting your time on that for? It’s never going to amount to anything.” He believed it for the longest time, abandoning characters he’d created in his childhood.

He picked up his very first m/m story by a writer named Eden Winters, who was an absolute joy when they corresponded. She asked him if he wrote and he told her the story. Eden explained to Will that the voices in his head would never go away and how he needed to let them out. With that thought in mind, Will put e-pen to e-paper once more. It was truly a liberating experience and one he has no intention of giving up again.

The Blurb…

Excerpt…

Benny cast a glance at Addy, noticing how his eyes kept darting to him and then to the floor. He seemed troubled, unsure.

“Addy? Is there something wrong?”

Addy heaved a deep sigh, then was quiet for a moment. “Do I embarrass you?” he finally asked.

“What? No, of course not. Why would you even think that?” Benny was genuinely perplexed.

“Jackson and Taylor don’t seem to have any problem touching each other, but you act like I’ve got germs or something and won’t come anywhere near me when there’s other people around. I have to wonder if you’re ashamed to be seen with someone like… me.”

“Oh God, no,” Benny replied sharply. “Please don’t ever think that. You know what? C’mere.”

He grabbed Addy’s arm and dragged him into the lounge.

“Listen to me, little man. I am not now, nor have I ever been, nor will I ever be ashamed of you. If anything, you should be ashamed of me.”

Addy looked puzzled. “Why?”

Benny slid his fingers through his stubbly hair, then rubbed the back of his neck before he spoke. “I’m not really comfortable with being… like this. I really do care for you, but I’ve never felt this way about a guy— well, about anyone—before, and I don’t know how to handle it. So no, I’m not ashamed or embarrassed of you at all. I’m just not sure how to deal with everything.”

Addy took Benny by the hand and peered into his eyes. “That’s all I needed to know. I don’t want to rush you. If you need time, you’ve got to know I’ll give it to you. I just wanted to be sure that you wanted me.”

Benny regarded his boyfriend. Yeah, his boyfriend. Benny had never been afraid to stand up for anyone in his life. Why should he be ashamed to stand up for himself now?

“C’mere, little man,” he growled, putting his hand on Addy’s neck, pulling him in close.

Addy’s eyes went wide, excitement dancing in them. Benny licked his lips and then pressed them to Addy’s in a deep, thrilling kiss. Someone whimpered. Benny wasn’t really sure which one of them it had been. He felt his synapses fry. It was the most incredible thing he’d ever experienced. A voice called out, startling them both.

“Benny? Is there something you’d like to tell me?”

Benny looked up and stared for a moment at Taylor, who had a wide smile across his face. Benny could feel his cheeks heat up. This wasn’t the way he wanted this to go, but damn, right now he needed Addy in the worst way.

“No, Taylor, not right now,” he replied quietly.
Then he went back in for another one of those amazing kisses.

The blurb...

The day Jackson Kern walks into Taylor Andrews’s classroom is a momentous day in Taylor’s life. He’s had crushes before, sure, but as time goes on, this is starting to look a whole lot more serious. Still, Jackson doesn’t return Taylor’s feelings.

Taylor has his own admirers, though. Kevin Richards is used to getting what he wants, and what he wants right now is Taylor, so when Taylor rejects him, Kevin retaliates. At first Taylor’s entourage rallies around him, but then Kevin takes his deception one step further and Taylor sees his support dwindle, teaching him the valuable lesson about who he can truly consider a friend.

* A Harmony Ink Press Young Adult Title

So what did I think?

I found Pitch a wonderful story for many and varied reasons – the characters, the handling of very serious issues, the emotions, the happy ending!

Taylor and Jackson’s journey was totally engaging and I enjoyed the emotional elements. The insight into Taylor’s feelings was a sweet study of unrequited love and the details behind Jackson’s own story came as a bit of surprise. There was something about both characters that drew me in.

The drama consists of scheming and deception to prevent Taylor and Jackson getting together, impacting both boys in an emotional way but also very serious violence caused by Kevin’s retaliation against Taylor for rejecting his advances. It was so interesting to see violence portrayed in such a way and not the typical straight boy beating on the gay boy.

My only real concern was in relation to understanding how Jackson came to his conclusions about Taylor. Why did he admire him? Was it because of of his volunteering work or how he coped with all the issues around his coming out? I felt that he had never really spoken to Taylor to get to know him properly so found his comments about how he had admired him for so long a bit puzzling.

This book definitely had it’s warm and fuzzy moments and the grand gestures and public proclamations which I totally love! But I think some of the secondary characters were actually highlights.

I loved Taylor’s mum and dad and the subtle way his dad let Taylor know that he had nothing to worry about in coming out, that he would always be loved and nothing he could ever do would change that.

Benny is an absolutely wonderful best friend to Taylor. Every kid needs a best friend like Benny! “Tay, look…you know I love you in a completely nonsexual-keep-it-in-your-pants kind of way, but you really got to let this go, man. It’s going to drive you nuts, which is going to drive me nuts in return.” He has Taylor’s best interests at heart and is supportive and encouraging. Some of the best lines in the book come from Benny’s acceptance of his friend’s sexuality. He is totally comfortable with Taylor to the point of being able to easily joke but his honesty is what I admired most – his ability to say what he felt….
“God, I swear… if you were a girl, you would be so mine,” Benny said quietly.
Taylor laughed. “You could always come over the dark side, dude.”
“The think is, sometimes, if I could, I think I’d do it just so I could be with you,” came the whispered answer.

So please, Will, may we have some more of Benny’s story next?
