GUEST POST: Tackling the Issue by Ken Mooney

Tackling The Issue

It was the summer of 2015 I was working on the final edits of my second novel, The Hades Contract and Jess West, my editor, had a question.

“Why isn’t there a sex scene here?”

Okay, I might be paraphrasing on the exact words: it was last year. This book itself is epic fantasy, the Greek gods meet the X-Men with a touch of horror and ultra-violence. After a big action scene, I hit the brakes, slowed down the story to deal with some characters before working to a dramatic finale. Key to this slow-down were two characters, gay guys comfortable with their own sexuality, finally giving in to their attractions to each other. After two books of dancing around each other, forever distracted by something else, this couple finally kissed. There was a little bit of superpower shenanigans in there and the characters relocated to the bedroom where I allowed the door to close, respecting their privacy.

I’d left my editor with blue balls, and she was intrigued as to why I’d done it. Especially when my first novel, Godhead, had included a scene where the villainess unzipped her target’s pants and mounted him, ready to manipulate mind body and soul.

Why didn’t I follow these characters into the bedroom?

Because I didn’t know if people wanted to read that.

Because even though I was a gay man, writing a book about gay characters and Greek gods, I was more comfortable writing about manipulative straight sex than addressing any sort of gay sexuality.

It was easy enough to figure out why that was the case: I didn’t have to look far. It’s an Irish thing.

Sure, it’s something of a joke in all sorts of media, but when you live in Ireland, when you’re from Ireland, there’s a certain problem that’s ever-present in the air. Sex has been a dirty word in Ireland for a very long time, along with every variation thereof: sexy sexuality and everything that goes along with it.

The Ireland that I was born into in the mid-80s has changed, but the memories of that old world still remain. Gasp in astonishment as you discover that divorce only became legal after a bitterly fought referendum in 1995; squirm as you discover condoms could not be bought in this country before 1985; raise your eyebrows in confusion that the government refused to decriminalise homosexuality in 1988 until the European Court of Human Rights got involved in 1993.

That’s right: for about a quarter of my life in this country, it was illegal just to be gay. Thankfully, it was a time when that issue didn’t really affect me, but that’s not to say that the memories of that world don’t linger.

Ireland is a small country, and the majority rules over a lot of things: the majority haven’t always been the bad guys, but they often just don’t know any better. TV shows have established the Irish Catholic family struggling to survive in the modern world, but those shows are usually based in the US, and forget some of the important factors of Irish life.

Because Ireland is a small place, the majority culture rules the roost. It’s not always intentional: it just sort of works that way. In Ireland, there’s this societal expectation that you’re Catholic, that you’re straight, that you’ll be marrying a member of the opposite sex and having kids.

I know plenty of people who defied those expectations and lived their own lives regardless, and I know families and friends who accepted those people. I also know of family and friends who did not accept these people.

I know plenty of people who moved to the UK or even further afield, away from a world of expectations. Some of those people moved away just to have more work opportunities, to go on a grand adventure: others saw a world that did not accept them and the people they wanted to fall in love with.

Is it any wonder that I would self-edit my own novel to remove this element of sexuality? Is it any wonder that I speak to someone from outside of Ireland, or anyone significantly younger than myself, and they don’t realise how truly messed up this country can be?

I wanted to address these thoughts, and encouraged by my editor, I wanted to address some of my own issues. But like a proper Irish man, I didn’t want to address them myself. I adopted a pseudonym to keep this project distant from my other work; I even used initials rather than a full name, in some ways ashamed of admitting that this was a look at gay life, written by a gay man and written for gay men.

I dressed this up as erotica, pure sexuality, but my attempted narrative was curiously dark and unwelcome. Determined to give an Irish spin to a story about two men attracted to each other, these characters took on angry and scared tones with very deep scars that had been left by the country around them. Apparently these characters had grown up in a similar Ireland that I had:  they had seen the world through similar eyes, reacting in ways I had seen and reacted myself.

After some initial reviews, I realised that my assumed name and my attempts to keep things distant form this project weren’t really fare or honest to this story. Dressed as erotica, the people who were reading my work for escape and fantasy were horrified by these characters with their issues and their flaws and their anger.

So I’ve changed the name and I’ve changed the purpose, but the story remains the same. Tackling The Issue remains an attempt to write erotica, but it turned into something very different: it turned into a study of internalised homosexuality, the kind of self-loathing, the anger and the depression that is triggered by some of the messed up sexuality that has haunted Ireland for years.

There is an expectation that Irish writers can write these happy endings, these worlds where a smile and good humour can heal all woes.

I’m not that kind of Irish writer. Happy endings don’t happen in the real world, and Ireland and its people have spent too much time pretending that magic realism is real. Let’s deal instead with a world where not everyone gets on with each other, where not everyone likes each other.

We’ve a lot of catching up to do on sex and sexuality, and it’s about time we start.

“Garrett O’Mahony would like to be your friend on Facebook.”

This is new. This is something I never expected to happen.

Garrett has ignored me for the best part of a decade, ever since we lived together, ever since he snuck out of my life, too afraid to admit who he was and how he felt.

Now, Garrett O’Mahony is one of the best rugby players Ireland has seen in years. Back then, he was my roommate; back then, he was just another Irish-man desperately trying to convince himself that he wasn’t gay.

I’ve changed since then. Ireland has changed since then. I don’t know if Garrett has changed too. But I guess there’s only one way to find out?

Mark is finding his way in life after six years in the army. He’s always wanted to write scripts for TV, and for one show in particular, Tomorrow’s Game.

Half in lust already with the lead actor Zach, he is shocked when he ends up in Zach’s bed. Not just that, but Zach’s co-star Rob is part of the package.

Is this just hot sex or can two become three?

Coming 11 March

Excerpt

Several beers later and the conversation was flowing nicely. There was no shortage of things to talk about: Zach, an actor, Mark, a wannabe screenwriter, Rob, mostly just offering incoherent grunting as he dozed on Zach’s shoulder.

When the offer came to continue the smooth, comfortable conversation back at Zach’s house, where Rob had a room, it was a natural progression of their evening. Zach was such an easy person to talk to, and Mark’s gaydar was in confusion mode. As they talked about all kinds of things, from the show to Hollywood, to Mark’s time in the Army, there had been some flirting, Mark was sure of it, but he couldn’t understand why. Zach was the poster boy for heterosexual alpha male, but he was inserting suggestive remarks into everything they talked about and didn’t bat an eyelid when Mark talked about staying the closet in the Army.

Anyway, if this was Zach flirting, why would he be flirting with Mark?

Mark had never rated his looks; he kept himself fit, his hair was short, and he had a naturally muscled body from years of physical exercise, but he was surely not in the league of Zach Cassidy, be he gay or otherwise.

It wasn’t as if Mark had heard anything about the twenty-six-year-old actor being interested in anyone other than the guest star actresses he was seen out with. Rumor had it he was dating one of the girls who had appeared in a few episodes in season one, a short redhead with a thing for murder.

The thing was, it seemed like maybe, in Zach’s eyes, Mark was a little bit better than ordinary, as Zach pushed him up against the wall inside the front door.

Zach was close; his lips close from Mark’s. “Tell me I’m not wrong. Tell me I can kiss you?”

So much for not being gay.

Mark didn’t even answer. He reached up and twisted his fingers, as best he could, into Zach’s short hair, pulling him toward him, mumbling “Not wrong” as he opened his mouth under Zach’s.

It was overwhelmingly hot, tongues searching out the taste of beer, kisses so deep and hard they curled Mark’s toes and left him short of breath. Zach pulled back to grab Mark’s hands, pushing them above his head and holding them in place, just holding him there for a long while, leaning into him, hard and heavy and needy up against him. Before Zach began tracing a path of open-mouthed kisses from temple to ear, stopping to caress the shell of Mark’s ear with the tip of his tongue, it seemed to Mark that breathing was almost impossible.

Whining deep in his throat, he moved restlessly under the onslaught, impossibly hard and desperate for friction, grinding up against Zach to relieve the pressure. Finally, Zach moved his lips lower, focusing all his attention on the fluttering pulse point in Mark’s neck as Mark just gave in and leaned his head back against the wall, helpless against Zach’s exploring mouth. He wanted to say something, anything, but couldn’t.

It didn’t enter his head to think where Rob had gone until another mouth touched his lips even as Zach was marking the skin pulled taut at his neck. He opened his eyes to find liquid-chocolate-colored eyes inches from his. He must have looked startled; Rob blinked once, twisting his fingers into Mark’s hair and pulling his head further back to give Zach free rein on his neck, taking Mark’s lips in a heated kiss then trailing fiery touches over Mark’s high cheekbones to his ear. “Zach wants you… I want to watch,” Rob said in his sleep-deprived growly voice.

Guest Post

Hello, I’m Rob Rosen, author, editor, short story writer and anthologist. I split my time evenly between the four, but it’s the anthologist part that brings me a special joy, not to mention a certain amount of dread. Let me explain both.

Best Gay Erotica of the Year, Volume 1 is the fifth anthology I’ve been fortunate enough to helm. It’s now in its twenty-first year, though, yes, it has picked up a snazzy new moniker. As to the joy of putting this together, that comes from being able to interact with the amazing talent that a collection like this draws, to read stories that fairly leap off the page, to read, quite literarily, the best of the best. You see, every erotica writer wants to be included in this, which is why it always ends up being such a spectacular anthology, year after year.

Writers from all over the country, and many countries beyond, send in their stories, dozens and dozens and dozens of them. Then it’s up to me to dwindle them down to fifteen or so. That’s the first part of the dread, because for every great story there’s an even better one waiting in the wings for me to get to. Then I have to pick between them all. Plus, I have to have variety within the final fifteen, choosing stories that are strikingly different from one another, so that the end product is unique and, like I said, spectacular. I mean, it’s not called Best Gay Erotica for nothing!

The second part of the dread is when I have to send the rejection letters out. And since these far exceed the acceptance ones, it’s a chore that fills me with a tremendous amount of sadness. Still, the thrill of sending the acceptances out, at reading the elation from the writers when they reply, makes it all worthwhile. Well, that and the finished product. And this finished product is amazing, stretching from the remote past to the distant future, with tales of androids, archaeology, Fidel’s Cuba, Ancient Rome, Colonial Arizona, bus rides, horny ghosts, federal lawmen, and on and on. Yep, the pages are packed full with hot men and even hotter stories.

Obviously, I’m exceedingly proud of this, proud of the writers who contributed to it, and eager to get it into the audience’s hands. I hope you can pick up a copy and hope even more that you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed putting it all together for you!

Excerpt

Taken from The Real Thing by Dale Chase

Explaining how it got down to just me is impossible. Suffice to say, it was the worst planetary fuckup of all time. Give the androids control of their own destiny, somebody said. Yeah, right.

So what we have after a very messy couple of millennia is a world full of constructed people. Make more as needed and dispose of the malfunctioning. Efficient and less costly than maintaining humans, which are subject to problems. Except they missed one thing. Like all great ideas implemented before they were thought out, nobody considered how much we liked humans. And how even androids would experience a surprising shift to that mindset.

Where am I in all this? Not a droid, that’s for damn sure. No, I’m probably the last human guy in the world, an oversight to be exact. I’ve been on the run for years because I’m a wanted man—in more ways than one. Illegal, yes, but also possessed of the last real flesh-and-blood cock. And they want it. They won’t admit it, though. They say they brought me in because I’m a renegade, a criminal, living outside society, but the truth is they want what I have. They want to get their hands on it, their mouths on it. They want to spread their cheeks and take it up the ass. I’ve been in this cell for just a week and have lost track of the number of droids I’ve fucked and who have fucked me.

They won’t let me have any clothes, and the cell has a window in the door, so more often than not there are faces peering in. Like now, a good-looking droid is watching me stroke my meat. I play with it so he can watch it get hard, squirt a load, then soften. Theirs won’t do it quite like the real thing. More of a mechanical spring-like inflation and not at all fleshy. Too hard, actually. Unreal. And they never did get the come mechanism right. A droid once confessed that it’s a gentle wave, a kind of ripple, and they greatly covet my pulsing shots and the obvious charge they bring. How on earth the creators could have made coming so mild is beyond me. Who in the hell was in charge?

My ass is also coveted, although droid asses are pretty close to human. Except, of course, theirs are only for sex. They can’t imagine our multi-purpose chute, say over and over again what a disgusting place it is, but when one of them gets near me and hits his arousal switch, he’ll invariably want to get his nose down there for a sniff and maybe even his tongue for a taste. I sometimes think the great droid creator way back when put a few glitches in on purpose, a human failing here and there to maybe soften the perfection.

When I was young, there were three of us left, locked into a controlled environment. It was a perfect life—cultivated humans, our every whim seen to—but when we discovered sex, we were separated, walled off from each other for fear we’d prefer ourselves to them. At nineteen we all escaped, went our separate ways, of necessity, and I know one of the others survived because we met up later, on the run.

Excerpt:

“Good morning, Officer Daugherty.” A young male clerk behind the desk in the fitness center called out to him.

“Mornin.” Orrin nodded and kept going. He wondered if the glow from getting some was still on his face from the night prior or if he’d really caught the man’s eye as he hoped.

Either way, he had to admit he hadn’t felt this good in days—no, make that weeks. He’d slept, had sex, and a good breakfast when he finally rolled out of bed at two p.m. With all that going on, he felt he could get through just about anything, including work. Despite this, he was grateful to have the full day off until his next shift at four a.m. tomorrow.

GIVEAWAY and GUEST POST: Rob Rosen

Confessions of a Smut Writer

By Rob Rosen

Hello. My name is Rob Rosen and I am a smut writer—and a highly successful one at that. In fact, I’m also the editor of Best Gay Erotica 2015, the largest, the oldest, and the most esteemed of all gay erotica collections on the planet, now in its twentieth year and due out on January 13th. It’s a rare privilege to be handed the reins of this anthology, especially since I didn’t start out to be a smut writer, let alone the editor of the granddaddy of all gay anthologies.

See, fifteen years ago I was writing mostly standard fiction. Sure, I wrote gay stuff, too, but all of it very PG. In fact, I’d never really read that much erotica, nor did I think I had anything to add to the genre. I mean, I assumed everything on the subject had been written about, every dick and hole configuration already stickily put to the page.

Still, there were a lot of calls for submissions for gay erotica. Turns out, sex sells. Who knew, right? So fine, I tried my hand at it. I mean, my hand knew how to work both the keyboard and the crotch below said keyboard, so why not? And guess what? My story was promptly rejected for publication in a certain print anthology. Bummer. Then again, no harm, no foul. And since I’d already written said story, the aptly named “Go Fuck Yourself,” I resubmitted it elsewhere, to an online M/M erotica site. No money, pretty nice-sized readership. And that’s where my story soon landed.

Now, here’s where fate stepped in, lubed up now that it was. Turns out, the editor of MEN Magazine also read that certain nice-sized site and enjoyed my story—my one and only gay erotica story. That same editor then emailed me and asked if I’d like to write for his magazines, plural, because he also edited Freshmen and [2]. Combined, they had a home subscription base of over a hundred thousand readers. Wait, to rephrase that: A HUNDRED THOUSAND! And that didn’t even include the newsstand sales. So, yeah, despite the fact that I hadn’t a clue how to write gay erotica, I said sure. I mean, I might have been a neophyte smut writer, but certainly not a stupid one. And I could write, right? So why not for him?

And that’s what I did. I wrote for him and all three of his magazines for just over five years, appearing in more than forty issues, until the magazines sadly folded. And by then I’d also written for just about every gay publisher on the planet. Turned out, I did have something new to add to the erotica genre: comedy. Comic romances, in fact. And with some pretty nifty dick and hole configurations, too, if I do say so myself.

Jump ahead to more than several hundred published short stories, most of them nicely smutty, not to mention eight riotously funny novels, and here I now am, the editor of the most nicely smutty of all the gay anthologies. And, yes, I am humbled by the honor, the honor to edit this collection and the honor to work with the biggest and brightest erotica writers in the business. Fate, you see, takes you to unimaginable shores, especially when it’s amply lubed up.

As for Best Gay Erotica 2015, it too is nicely smutty, it too adds something new to the genre. Every editor, you see, has their own style, their own sense of what they deem erotic, not to mention their own predilections for what they like to read. So, yes, there’s more humor in this collection, more dark fiction, more fantasy, but with the same literary acuteness that everyone has come to expect.

So, yes, like I said, I’m a smut writer. And a rather proud one at that.

Thank you fate. Feel free to lube up and step into my life anytime you damned well please. I’ll be here, waiting for you.

Cabin Boys: William Cooper talks about the trick to successful erotica as he launches his new book.

William Cooper has a new book out – Cabin Boys. Firstly let me start by saying this book is brother on brother action which is perfectly fine by me. I’m perfectly happy to read a book with a twincest or a brocest theme and have actually posted a couple of reviews for this type of book on the blog before – check them out if you’re interested!

Even if this isn’t your usual type of book, it’s interesting to read what William has to say about his special niche plus there’s an excerpt to give you a little taste. Enjoy!

The Trick to Successful Erotica

Many authors make their living writing erotica. However, making good money from erotica isn’t as easy as you’d think. You can just throw up a quick 5k vanilla sex scene on Amazon and expect to start rolling in money. Once you’ve learned the ropes though, you can be successful.

The main trick to writing successful erotica is to use kinks and niches to your advantage. Psuedo-incest, BBW, and dubcon are all very popular niches. Same with virgins, barely legal, and BDSM. Your best bet is to pick a niche or kink and stick to it.

For my, my best niche is Brother/Brother books. It’s still a pretty small genre, but there’s a good size market for it. Pseudo-incest and Incest are both popular in the M/F genres, but they’re even more popular in the M/M genre.

Just let men love watching twin women having sex in porn, women enjoy reading about two sexy twin men who don’t mind being intimate together. Some authors achieve this niche by doing M/M/M and having two brothers seduce another non-related male. Others, like myself, cut out the third party and just let the brothers get freaky together.

Some people won’t touch the genre with a ten foot pole, as either a reader or a writer, and that’s fine. There are tons of other kinks just waiting to be tapped into. If you’re looking at making a living from erotica, learn what niches are out there and find one you enjoy writing.

Thanks for hosting me!

The Blurb…

Aaron has been in love with his brother for years. Unfortunately for Aaron, those feelings haven’t been mutual. Elliot loves his brother, sure, but he’s not in love with Aaron. After a drunken night up at their parents’ cabin in the woods, could things finally be going Aaron’s way?

Cabin Boys Excerpt

Elliot sent shivers through my body as he ran his tongue along my shaft. Arching my back, hips driving up to give him better access, I wished he’d stop teasing me. God, just suck it already. He opted for mercy and worked his magic by taking my cock into his hot mouth. Heart slamming against my ribs, I thought maybe his mouth might be what heaven feels like—sexual redemption to be found sliding my cock between his full, red lips.

With each rise and fall of Elliot’s head, I got closer to coming. The weight of the impending orgasm, the pressure in my balls drove me insane. I wanted him to take my cum, wanted him to swallow every last drop. Then I wanted to push him down onto the bed and suck his cock dry. I could almost hear his moans as he fisted my hair.

Just as I was about to come, I heard my bedroom door open and it jarred me out of my fantasy. I opened my eyes and yanked my blanket over my lower half as Elliot sauntered in. Even though it was pretty obvious what I’d been doing, I still didn’t need him to see for himself. The heat rising in my cheeks assured me they were bright red as I faced him down. It didn’t help that he was the object of my fantasy.

Elliot stood in the doorway, a slight grin on his face. He wore only a pair of basketball shorts. It was obvious he’d been working out in the basement again. Droplets of sweat slid down his body, moving along the curves of his chest and abs. I loved that the only hair he had on his chest was the little trail leading from his belly button to beneath his shorts. Elliot’s grin solidified my assumption that he knew I was jerking off.

Even though I was twenty-one, I felt like a teenager again. I couldn’t wait until I was out of the house and had my own place. I had hoped for some privacy by now, but Elliot had decided to live with our parents until he finished his MBA. He claimed it was far less expensive than on-campus housing or an apartment.

My gaze roamed over his body, from the contours of his shoulder, down his pecs and abs, to the small trail of hair that lead to the prize inside his shorts. Stop that! I chastised myself. I couldn’t let Elliot notice me ogling him, much less figure out he’d just interrupted a fantasy involving him. He was my brother, after all, and I can’t imagine he’d be pleased with it.

“You got any plans for the weekend?” he asked.

I rolled my eyes. The fucker could’ve at least said hello or apologized for not knocking when he came in. He reinforced my belief that I’d gotten all the manners from our genetic pool, and they’d drifted right past him. Elliot never was one to beat around the bush. “Nope, why?”

He leaned against the doorframe with his arms crossed in front of his chest, still grinning from his embarrassing masturbatory discovery. “I was thinking we could go up to the cabin for the weekend. We haven’t been up there since last summer, and I wanna grab some beers and have some fun before school starts up again.”

“Sounds good. I could use a few days away from the house. We leave in the morning?” Elliot was right. We hadn’t gone up there since about this time last year. We were well overdue for a break away from the rest of the world.

“Yeah, if that works for you. We can stop at the liquor store down the street and stock up like we always do. How’s that sound?”

I nodded. “Yeah, that works for me. What time we leaving?”

“Be ready to go around six,” Elliot said, then winked. “Have fun taking care of that.” He turned and left, closing the door behind him.

Six? Seriously? As far as I was concerned, there were no hours between two am and eight am. No one in their right mind wants to get up that early. But then again, no one ever said Elliot was in his right mind.

So what did I think?

The excerpt, which is actually the beginning of the book, sets the tone for the whole story, as Aaron and his brother Elliot head off for a weekend at their family cabin. Aaron has fantasised about his brother for years and this trip is the weekend where all his fantasies come true. Skinny dipping and too much alcohol lower their inhibitions and Aaron finds himself the lucky recipient of the type of attention he ‘s been craving from his brother. There’s no gradual introduction to the world of gay sex as these guys get stuck straight into it! Lots and lots of brother on brother action in this short story and Aaron can’t believe his luck!

The blurb says that Aaron has been in love with Elliot for years. This may be the case but if so, the story doesn’t really show why – this is all about the physical attraction rather than giving much insight into the characters. There’s an interesting acceptance by Elliot (who is not gay and therefore can’t give Aaron everything he desires “It was a little disappointing, but any sex with Elliot would be worth it.”) and  a  rather relaxed attitude regarding their activities. This isn’t an angsty, guilt-filled story – this is short and sexy with an unexpected little turn at the end which I’m sure will lead to another story and adventure for Aaron.

What to try something a bit different and maybe outside your comfort zone?

I recently read two books that were definitely a bit out there and maybe not everyone’s cup of tea but sometimes it’s worth trying something a little different and being a bit uncomfortable doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing!

Gamble Everything (Gamble Everything, #1-7)Gamble Everything by Cari Waites

My rating: 3.5  of 5 stars

The Blurb…

Eighteen year old Danny sells himself to Peter Archer to repay his father’s gambling debts.

This 36,000 word novel includes explicit content, including: m/m, dubious consent, oral sex, anal sex, sounding, plugging, fisting, BDSM, and ass play. All characters are 18 years or over.

Note: This is a complete compilation of all 7 volumes of the Gamble Everything series.

So What did I think?

I read this book, intrigued by other reviews – some loved it, some hated it – after all, I guess daddy kink isn’t for everyone. And this is definitely daddy kink in a big way. We’re talking dinosaur pajamas, teddy bears, peanut butter sandwiches and juice boxes!

But it wasn’t what I was expecting and the story didn’t pan out the way I thought it would.

Strangely compelling, the story held me from beginning to end. I was fascinated to see the journey that Daniel was on and just how far Archer could push him. The treatment Danny received wasn’t pleasant but it was intriguing to see the changes in his response to Archer as the story progressed.

Kept in a cock cage and denied orgasm, whipped and subjected to massive amounts of ass play and sounding, Danny got more than he expected when his father ‘sold’ him to pay off his debts. Alternating between scenes with Daniel and Archer (and the others that Archer invites in) and scenes that give insight into Danny’s upbringing and relationship with his father, it is an interesting look at his psyche.

And the ending was certainly unexpected.

3.5 stars – a bit uncomfortable but entirely original!

KrakenKraken by M. Caspian

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The Blurb…

Kraken: A gothic erotic horror with tentacle non-con.

When boyfriend Parker gives him an ultimatum Will never dreams his heart is about to be ripped out: move to a remote off-shore island with him, or call it quits. But Will picks wrong, and now he’s heading into the unknown to fix his mistake. But why do the locals think they recognise him? And why can’t he seem to leave?

Reader advisory: This work of fiction contains explicit sexual activities between men that may offend some people. It also contains scenes of rape, extreme violence, tentacles, and reference to sexual abuse of children.

So what did I think?

I gave this 3 stars but really it was probably nudging on the “Just a bit too weird for me” side. Another strangely compelling story that I won’t say too much about as the blurb/reader advisory really says it all!

“You’re a fucking monster!” Cyrus laughed, and Will felt the vibration run through his stinging skin. “Why, yes I am Will. You’ve only just noticed?”

☞ Charlie, Rentboy by J.P. Barnaby

This is the first book in the Working Boys series.

Charlie, Rentboy (Working Boys, #1)Charlie, Rentboy by J.P. Barnaby

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Blurb…

Got two hundred and fifty dollars for an hour of fun? Then say hello to Charlie, a hot little rentboy working his way through an engineering degree on his back. He’s got shaggy blond hair that’s great to hang on to while you fuck him from behind, and sweet innocent blue eyes that look very enticing when he gazes up at you with your cock in his mouth. That is, until he’s hired by innocent rich boy John Middleton, head of Middleton Communication. John is so far in the closet he could find Narnia. But when John and Charlie get together for an explosive weekend of sex, everything goes to hell

So what did I think?

“Sure, sounded like an easy weekend and definitely worth my time. At least, that’s what I thought – until he f***ed up my life.”

Okay, it’s pretty obvious from the title that this book is about “Charlie” who is a rentboy. And yes, the plot does sound a little familiar as the struggling student/rentboy Charlie takes on a weekend engagement with John, corporate millionaire. But the story has a uniqueness all it’s own. This story has a lovely focus on the emotions of the two men and a surprising ending. From the first pages I thought I would know the outcome of the story but it wasn’t what I expected.

The highlight of the story was the unique insight provided into each character and the way their true nature was revealed as the story progressed. I particularly liked the wonderful portrayal of Charlie and the way he is brought to life. At the start of the book he is a focused and confident young man, not letting his circumstances put an education and career out of his reach. He is a smooth talking rentboy, out to play the ‘game’ and to secure return business. At the same time we meet the corporate rich boy, John, who even though he heads up a large company, is inexperienced, sexually shy and emotional.

However, when the ‘event’ happens, suddenly we see an almost role reversal as “Charlie” reveals his true self. We see the young student not the rentboy, and his real desires in life. He just wants a solid career and to make his mother happy. John however steps up to the plate, taking responsibility and making decisions to manage the situation.

I thoroughly enjoyed the characters, the sex, the plot and the ending!

Make sure you check out the video below for an audio excerpt from the beginning of the book and a look at some cute boys!
